Order a galaxy nexus but received a docomo. Should I keep it? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Like the title suggest I paid about 400 and I really don't know the difference between them but I'm sure this isn't one I should keep or should I? I would hate to go through the hassle of shipping and waiting but then again I want the correct version. The input is appreciated

I believe theres a DoCoMo thread in the General section, there's an unlocker app in the dev section as well originally made for GN-Docomo's

But my Sim card works I'm on att. I just want to know if there's a major difference enough so to return the phone. Every thing seems to be working fine I just don't want problems down the road because this is a domoco
Sent from my HTC One X using Tapatalk 2

I think the differences are only limited to the supported network bands. But it seems everything's working fine for you on ATT.
On a firmware level, docomo may not be yakju stock - your future Android updates won't be coming through from Google but from Samsung, at a later date.

I personally would not keep Docomo version as from searching i found that with such version you have to either satisfied with being not permanently unlocked (SIM Unlock code request will appear each time you flash a new ROM or make a factory reset) or satisfied with being permanently unlocked but with generic IMEI.
When I bought my Nexus here in Vietnam there were a lot of Docomo ones but I rather waited for European version and was willingly to pay 20-50 USD more (Docomo version here in Vietnam is sold for 20-50USD cheaper than European version). Hope helped you with decision.

I actually used the galaxy toolkit and everything seemed to work fine. So I'm on yakju now. And I actually like the nexus more than the one X if that's hard to believe

I actually flashed the factory Google rom yakju on this phone and it didn't ask for an unlock code. Sim still worked. Haven't tried a rom yet but that will be my next test, I don't think it will be any different. Thanks everyone for your replies

Not necessarily. Three UK have said that their Galaxy Nexii are locked.
i have the Nexus S, and no, it was never locked in any shape or form
you either get the GSM version of the CDMA version
that's all
just like the new GN, you either go for the GSM version, or the CDMA version
This is, I have one waiting for me to buy at the O2 store, the kind helper said he'd keep it for me until I arrive....

i spoke to 3 yesterday, spoke to a couple of their representatives to confirm if there was a SIM lock on the phone, they confirmed that there was
Vodaphone said their Nexus S are locked, but they weren't. The stupid O2 Customer Services say all O2 phones are sim locked.
Some are lock and some aren't. Same as the nexus s.
I would personal always presume network direct phones will be locked unless told otherwise.
Meh, I'll just have to put my GiffGaff in it if it is, until I get SuperCID on it.
just buy it from retailers that offers unlocked version to avoid problem then.
don't give business to 3, and let them die a painful and slow death by locking their phones

I'm not buying it from 3, I'm buying from O2......and I refuse to wait another 7 days for it.
3 will always be locked unless you get it from CPW ect. And there firmware is usually written pretty deep into the phone.
its either Phones4U or another independent now, or wait 2 weeks until CPW are allowed to sell it on all Networks. The rest are going to be Network Locked, I'm going to Jamaica January and do not want to be stuck on some waiting for Updates O2 Firmware so no way in hell am I getting it from O2 Direct.
They told me it was OK lol got my unlock code in less than 24 hours.

There is currently no 'free' way of sim unlocking your device if you hang around long enough someone may write a program to do it but you may be waiting a while. Quite a few members have stated the unlock code can be obtained over ebay within 2 hours for around £9 which is a good price. You could also contact your carrier and tell them you want to take your phone abroad and use a different sim card in it while you are away to save costs. Sometimes they will unlock it for free.

got mine unlocked from o2 for free, filled in a form on their site and they emailed me the unlock code
just bought a SIM unlock code from here for £5
instant delivery, works perfectly. awesome
a warning about sim unlock: I got my nexus today from vodafone spain and as expected it was locked. I got an unlock code from ebay and it worked like a charm.
But, I like to play with new phones first, then restore defaults and set everything up the way I want it. The thing is, the galaxy nexus doesn't remember the network unlock code between factory resets, at least mine doesn't (yakju, came with ITL41F).
The codes work, but you may need yours again, so don't throw the number away
any code for three? im waiting the three to give me the code, about 2 weeks now
Hello Mark, is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus an universal phone? Can I use the unlocked version with LTE carriers in the future? I am in US and Verizon is the only LTE carrier I was wondering about using T-Mobile (HSPS technology) or wait for Sprint (my current carrier). I live in USA but I am thinking about moving to Japan so I wonder if I should just wait and maybe I will need to get one in Japan with one of their carriers... Also I love the forums and it is all great, but is there an IRC room for this questions as well?
Thank you in advance,

The GSM version can be purchased unlocked and used on any GSM carrier with their supplied SIM card. The GSM frequencies are listed for the Galaxy Nexus and they cover the majority of GSM international and US domestic carriers.
The LTE version, as far as we've heard, is only for Verizon in the US. Not sure what LTE technologies other carriers in other countries are using.
If you're interested in having an international capable version of the deivce, the GSM version is currently your best option.
Hope that helps!
Hi,
I would also like to purchase such a code, but how ist it with OTA updates? Still avialable?
How would it be if I later root my phone and put on a custom rom? Will it be still unlocked.
or
cant I just put on a custom rom, to sim-unlock the phone and save those costs?
Sorry for the noob questions.
Thanks

Custom Roms cannot sim unlock your phone as it isnt part of the system.
Flashing an OTA update or a custom rom will not affect your phone if you have sim unlocked it with a code.
MArk.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have contacted my carrier (A1 Austria) and complained about the simlock. To make a long story short, they finally gave me the simunlock pin.
But recently I unlocked the bootlader and the unlock was wiped so I needed to reenter the pin. After I reflashed the original rom (back to stock) the sim was locked again.
And the most strange thing happened today. I just restarted the phone today (as every day) and the sim was locked again. So reentered the pin to unlock.
My question now, can it be that the simumlock pin they have provided me is not correctly working or is this a normal behaviour or a bug?
Br, Avi

That appears to be normal behaviour.

[Q] Canadian (Koodo) One V Compatible?

Firmware : 1.66.661.3
Baseband: 20.67.30.0831U_3831.15.00.28_M
I noticed my phone has an amazing amount of bloatware on it. I was wondering since I have the Canadian version if I'm able to flash any other roms? I see a lot are Europe/Asia and I imagine are not compatible. I had the galaxy ace before this and remember losing the ability to connect to Koodo (my provider) without the Canadian version of their baseband.
Also with unlocking bootloader/rooting/flashing CWM, are there any repercussions since I have the canadian HTC phone? (t320a)
Thanks all.

Ah cool, I use dropbox, twitter etc.
Totally agree with root, TB, adfree to name a few are pretty much necessary!
I was hoping by bloatware you didn't mean at&t or verizon style bloat, in Canada most provides are not that bad with carrier bloat. Bell is the worst and their phones are stock compared to their American counterparts! Never had a Koodo phone, and I'm planning on unlocking it and using it on Telus, so I was curious about any carrier bloat (dropbox and twitter are HTC added programs).
One more thing, with the free 25gb of storage you get with the purchase of the One V, why don't you give dropbox a try? That's a sweet amount of free cloud storage to add to google drive.

Just to help you out and potentially save you some money (if you unlock it through Koodo), but a locked Koodo phone will still be able to use a Telus SIM without any issues; at least, they used to last summer. I have no clue if the reverse is true, but I'd assume it would be.
I would never use that much space on my phone, I also have 4 tb of space on my home pc's. I'm not hurting.
Also to the prior post, I believe that's correct. Koodo is a subsidiary of telus so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
Does anyone have the RUU for the Koodo/Telus version or know where to get it?
Thanks in advance
Well if it's easy to do, I'm up for helping.

No probs,
To TelusHTCHero as well, already knew telus / koodo were compatable as Koodo is a sub-brand of Telus running on the same network. The fact that it takes a full size sim unlike the rest of the One series is a cool selling point too, after unlocking ($14.99 btw) I can just drop the sim card in from my desire and away I go.
Telus wants to charge $289.99 no term / $189.99 2 year / $229.99 1 year. $175 Koodo no term plus $14.99 unlocking is a no brainer. I got my desire by pre-order August 2010, for the standard 3 year contract, so unless I wait another 8-12 months I will have to pay a penalty to cancel my current contract.
After buying a top of the line phone (Desire) and watching it become obsolete for all intents I will never again sign a three year term, technology moves too fast and I want my new toys sooner! The One V has a newer (though similar clocked) processor, better screen (I compared the two side by side), better camera, no storage issues like the desire, etc etc and cheaper than a Galaxy SIII on a 3 year term off contract? Sold, while waiting to see what the HTC "Two" series brings!
Cheers guys, hopefully I can join you soon as a One V owner.
You can't really compare it to an s3 though. It's only arm7 and the adreno 205.
I'm sure the s3 has a way better gpu and is an a9 cpu. That would explain the price difference. Realistically I only go with cost/performance phones and I only pay 30/month at koodo. The phone cost me 25 bucks for a great phone that has ICS. Surely a great replacement for my galaxy ace.
Hey quick question. If a ruu is uploaded here, do we need to use the WWE ones if we are from Canada? I noticed my software version is a little past the posted WWE versions.
I have no clue about compatibility or which ruu's to use so I'm a little scared attempting to tinker with my phone with no backup. Lol.

The WWE will be compatible, once you root use clockwork to do a full ROM backup and your good to go.
The only thing RUUs are good for are " warranty backups" as flashing them will lose root and s-off etc. For this, a carrier RUU is best.
If you can return it for exchange at a store, a rooted backup works, most mobile store employees wouldn't know a rooted phone If it slapped them in the face!

So I need to unlock bootloader, then cwm, backup.. and I'll still have stock with OTA updates? I guess that's all I need.
I beleive that as soon as you unlock, you loose the OTA updates. At least that's how it is with my transformer Prime. As far as getting the phone from Koodo to get on Telus network, I don't know why you would do that as they are physically the same network, just different as virtual networks. I'm on Koodo, periodically I look the other providers and still can't get a better deal for phone + data. There is always 6 gigs a month with Fido but you need to get 3 years contract with penalty, so ---
Anyway. Coming from the optimus one this is quite a good phone. I put the mocado rom + titanium kernel, excellent combination ! You just have to manually add your APN for Koodo and here you go.

Nope, unlocking or rooting does not stop ota updates. Loading a custom ROM would, but then again flashing custom ROMs would negate the need for ota updates anyways.
As far as using a koodo phone on Telus. I have a great plan with them, 6gb data, north American calling, voicemail to text, lots of other extras. Lastly, I signed a three year contract for my Desire September 2010, still some time left. That's the attraction of the koodo One V, $175 plus hst = $196 plus $14.95 to unlock and use my current Telus sim.
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk 2
AFAIK Koodo won't sell you a phone at that price of 175 unless you are currently in a plan with them, unfortunately.
Also I've read you shouldn't flash OTA if you root/unlock bootloader for the chance you can brick your phone
Seeing as we in Canada are stuck with version 1.66 and the rest of the world is on 2.08 I think maybe I will switch to custom roms lol. I hope development really sparks here though.

I hear that the service providers of India use a WCDMA network. Thus a unlocked GSM/HSPA+ version should work properly in India.THE Version version and Sprint version are not suit for people who are not in America

If a phone is unlocked, it will certainly be usable around the world. you can use 3g for sure. 4g depending on your region. the circle is expanding rapidly. you will get the over the air (OTA) updates from google as long as the phone you buy is factory unlocked or directly from google and nothing changed. since its a nexus device, there is ground breaking support for it. updating on your own is a piece of cake, should you wish to do so. any update you would want will come directly to your phone when you connect to a wifi. hence OTA. there is no download what-so-ever using kies.
hope it helps.

2. How do these seller get these phones? (The one i contacted gets it from UK but he didn't go into specifics of how they import them.)
3. If it has a genuine UK warranty, how much of use it that to me in India?
4. I'm getting it for 25K, is that a good price or should i negotiate further?
Thanks in avance guys, really looking forward to some answers.

1. Yes its safe to get it from eBay, speak to the seller before hand about exchange in case there are issues.
2. There are people who import it and give it to the sellers, the boxes seals are opened and phone are checked for any damage(that may have been caused by transport, but original screen guard isn't removed, always check for this as it cannot be put back on the screen once removed), and then they are usually re-packed with a nice plastic.
3. You can use it in India just fine, but if you have issues you'll have to send it back to the UK.
4. I got mine for 24k about 4 weeks ago, so you can get a better price now since the play store sells it for cheaper rates.
I have been using a GNex bought from the US play store in India and it works great. Had to use market enabler to download some us only apps though. 3g on airtel works great. Running 4.1 JB right now.

Depends. If you have a relative or friend in the US, you can have them buy and ship to you, which was what I did. Or, get it from ebay or if you're in Delhi, gaffar. Street price is around 24k,ebay has it for more. Couple of my friends just got it for 24k.
My battery is good to be true, and the negative posts I read about it don't seem to fit. I average 1.5 days to 2 days, with texting, wifi, browsing here and there, music and all. Pretty darn good and satisfactory if you ask me.
Get the phone! It'll blow your mind!

Go ahead get it!!
The Galaxy Nexus sold on google play or whichever variant claims to be the unlocked GSM edition is good to go with any Indian carrier. The upside about the unlocked International edition is that it is supported by google directly which means it is elligible for all relevant upgdates from google and not from samsung as may be the case with some country specific editions of the device. i have heard that Indian users of the international edition of the phone have already recieved the JB upgrade. i think with shipping , the device should be for around 399$ in the US. if u have an inexpensive source in the US who would be peddle it for you, please go ahead. it is an awesome device . I have been on the galaxy R for the last 6 months, which is a very capable device itself , but running TouchWiz over GB , the galaxy nexus is a refreshing new experience. the stock android is exciting. A great device over all.

Dude, shipping cost depends on where you want it to ship. For me it was New York, took $390 including tax. So yeah, it's not always $400, depends on your area. Some even got it for like $370.
And yeah, I got stock JB running on mine. Gotta agree with you on the experience. The hardware may not be the best, but when you use it with the software, it's blazing fast. The smoothness is just amazing. You won't go back once you get it!
Bad battery posts are from people who got lte/ 4g I assume. Or ones who game all the time. What's important is on screen time I on average get 3.5 hrs daily. Regardless of battery time that could vary on my use of that day.

One more thing, have u got Jellybean update on it?
if so, did u get update notification when using it in India only or have u installed it manually?
I am concerned about one thing, if i'll be getting jellybean update directly from google via OTA or not.
coz i am using Xperia X10 (bought from Singapore) and didn't get any gingerbread on it so i had to install it manually.

All depends on the build. I got mine from the play store.
It's like this: Takju = gsm version from the US play store
Yakju = gsm version from Play Store, but not US, basically internationally
Both these builds get updates from Google, so you'll have no worry.
But, if you have Yakju**, which is the Yakju variant, then your updates will be controlled from Samsung, although this version of the phone is gsm too.
Hope I helped!
And yes I got JB right after a few minutes after my first boot up!

Asked for an AT&T HTC One, got a Verizon one, should I ask for a return?

Well the phone works on Indian GSM network, but this is a Verizon HTC One. Can I still flash WWE HTC One ROMs or am I screwed in that department?
EDIT: To clarify, I met a seller selling imported unlocked US HTC Ones, and said he would send me an AT&T One, but I got a VZW One instead.
Really?

well the vzw one definitely works fine on the indian gsm networks. if you want more options in terms of custom roms, yeah ask him for a return. it might be worth more hassle than it's worth though.
If you asked for an att phone then get what you want. Why settle for something you didn't ask for

You can run ViperOne on any HTC One, so i wouldn't worry about it. Plus Philz CWM Touch is available for m7vzw, and some great custom kernels.
Of course, you did ask for something and got something else, so in all rights you could ask for the correct one you ordered. I love my m7vzw though.
Edit - btw, "unlocked" htc ones are not exactly hard to come by. You can unlock any HTC One with Rumrunner as long as you do it before updating firmware. Takes a couple minutes, and you do not need to really know anything except how to install correct drivers on your pc and read.

Thanks, I'm thinking of keeping it since sending it back and forth would probably take a couple of weeks. Currently running a debloated stock Verizon KitKat with ElementalX kernel and it's working really well (of course, s-off'd and unlocked). This wasn't hard to come by on eBay, but it was the cheapest from a reputed seller, so I bought it as an upgrade from my N4.
PS: I really need to remove the stupid "x attempts remain before your data is deleted" security feature, this will be a gold mine for my friends if they see this. Any ideas on how I can do this without changing ROMs?

Just so you know, the Verizon One doesn't support 3G UMTS/HSPA+, as far as we know anyway, and is limited to a few 2G GSM bands. It's designed specifically for Verizon's CDMA + LTE network with a couple international bands thrown in for roaming purposes - not the best model to use all the time in another country. You really want the AT&T model for proper band support, unless you don't mind poor coverage in areas where your carrier uses other frequencies.
Yeah the one is capable of making global calls but not handling global data.
