HTC One X - yes or no? - HTC One X

I have a pretty hard decision to make and I would really like to hear your opinion. I have a chance to extend my contract and replace my Galaxy S i9000 with the One X, but I'm not entirely sure if that's a good idea. First I'd like to state that I love the size of both the device and the screen. Now I don't really know how the battery is gonna do for me. I usually listen to music on my earphones for about 2 - 3 hours a day and I don't use any kind of data connection, just Wifi. Do you think it will get me through about 13 hours? Now I've read about the screen flickering issues and that part concerns me a lot. I understand that HTC released some updates. Did those updates completely remove the flickering problem? And I have one more question. How hot does the device get when you push the Tegra 3 to its limits? I would really appreciate any kind of feedback from you, the One X users and please let me know if there are some other problems that I didn't mention (I don't count the rainbow effect as a problem, since I won't be trying to crush my device). Thank you

13 hours sounds like a lot, but turning off wifi when you don't use it and the carrier data connection would save battery. there's only 1 other phone to pick from for Android and it's not out until about June, so if you can't buy at full price and go month to month and you don't want to wait until June - then get this one. there are also a bunch of threads about all of this. i would hate to have to mod this section.
i'm getting mine next week, but i'm paying full price because i'm on contract from the GS II until Oct 2013. after that, i'm switching to Red Pocket or something like that.

I know, I read all about the problems but I would just like some opinions on the worth of the device and how it does on a day to day use. I really don't want to spend so much on a device and then be sorry for that decision for 2 years. I have to have my decision ready by Monday and the opinions from you guys would help me a whole lot. I read literally dozens of reviews but that's just the first look, I need some information about the daily usage.

I reach 13 hours with 2.5hrs screen time on a daily basis

1day and 14hrs with 3hrs screen on time and that is with wifi on all the time...go for the phone mate. or wait till the s3 gets released and then make your decision. both great phones and great in their own rights....build quality of my phone no issues..minor software bugs but waiting for the update to come so it should sort it

So you guys are satisfied with the phone and it's the best phone on the market now, right? I guess I'll buy it on Monday then. Thank you very much for helping me with this decision

Get one infact if u can afford them get 2

Sorry for coming in late, but I would also highly recommend this phone. Battery has been running now for 1 day and 4 hours without a charge. I haven't used the phone a great deal in the last 28 hours, however WiFi and Bluetooth have been enabled throughout.
Battery showing 60% charge.
It's a great phone!

+1 for the One X. I listen to music from the phone easily 3-4 hours a day, half of which is in the car. I noticed that if I turn the wifi off when I'm out and about, the phone can last a damn long time playing music. I haven't tested exact usage, but from memory, a forty minute drive used about 1% of battery or so.
Also, I have no hardware issues at all. Absolutely perfect phone. Only time when the battery really drops fast is if you are using it heavily with say a game, or internet with brightness set above 65% or so

Thank you guys, you have been really helpful. I just wasn't sure about the overall quality of the device and how bad those "problems" are, but you made it clear that the One X is worth the money

With constant music?
Anyhow, the Tegra 3 is supposed to have the support core which may improve battery life significantly when the screen is off (even if listening to music?)
Maybe I can try some tests!
I only just got mine.
Then there's always SetCPU (and it's profile functionality).

Here's a screen shot of mine 3G streaming a couple of hours of Rhapsody over BT today with not much display on-time. From my experience, Wi-Fi drains the battery less than 3G. The display is the big battery eater so for music with the display off you should make your 13 hour goal.

My batt is now in 51% and has been used for 13 hrs with screen on 1.40hrs

I have no issues with screen or anything else.
Can't complain about battery life but my use has been light so far.

That's why I love the XDA community, it's always ready to help Thank you once again and wish me luck in getting a problem-free One X

Had this phone for a week now and it's a perfect device. No issues at all, build quality is awesome, software could be a bit more tuned and optimized, but really, this is the best smartphone on the market at the moment. I'd give it 9/10. Sretno

[Q] How to get the most of out Gnex Battery

So I've tried various things, disabled apps I don't use such as Email, Exchange Services, News and Weather, and even disabled the Gallery app and using QuickPic instead (on GB, Gallery was known to waste battery for no reason). Also turned off data and connected via 2G only to save battery, have brightness the lowest possible, turned off auto sync, and yet, still don't have near as good battery life as on my GB running LG G2x.
So my question is, what do you guys do to get as much battery life as possible?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running AOKP+Franco

jk. what kind of battery life are you getting? Maybe run stock?
Ha it seems to not have to do with the wireless settings at all, drains either way.
And with GB on LG G2x, got 12 hours of constant, heavy use. Music, XDA, Pulse, FB, some gaming, texting all day, definitely used my phone.
Now, with AOKP+Franco, getting around 8 hours of light usage, just messaging and music. Wi-fi on for not even an hour, and didn't play with it much.
And maybe I'll give that a try, I just love all the options in AOKP.

Might try Apex, battery lasted nicely if I remember correctly the few hours I ran stock. Apex is basically stock, with tweaks and customization.
I know for most phones, AOSP and similar based roms almost never provide as much battery life as the stock software w/wo tweaks. There are some exceptions, but maybe ICS is different. Going to flash Apex and tell you how it goes tomorrow.
I was actually just reading a thread someone posted about this. This guy has some pretty good instructions, I would read this:

try the "on deman" governor , it worked very well for me...
Yeah there's nothing you can really do man. SAMOLED just takes up so much more battery than our old G2X's IPS. That's pretty much the only difference. Probably nothing web can do. I bought 3 spare 1750mAH batteries plus an external charger all for 13 bucks to compensate. That's the only way for me to fix my battery issues.

Oled uses more energy than LCD. You fell for the marketing. They are relying too heavily that black doesn't use energy but who uses all black screen?

That's true, I keep try to keep everything dark, gonna have to invest in a extended battery I guess.

It is what it is. It could improve in the future, but oled has more visual advantages than LCD. I wouldn't get my panties in a was over it though. And just to throw it out there, bigger pled screens use more energy than a comparable LCD because of the pixels that are lit. The LCD screen is more constant because of back light.
...of the people, by the people, for the people...
Thanks for that, will definitely keep that mind when buying a new phone down the road. Hopefully not too soon.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Apex
It appears that at lower brightness values, it's not the screen that's causing power drain. Though indeed, current S-LCDs are about 3 times more efficient than OLEDs when displaying white at same brightness.
not bad for me

[Q] How many hours do you get before you charge your HOX?

I did not see a thread similar to this for HOX. People have been saying that HOX battery is not as good as SG3 but I just wanted to get an idea how much other users are getting.
MY HOX White is giving me an awsome backup for 48 hours average with 2 hours screen time and 45 minutes talk time. I think it is awesome. Post your hours here.
Not to bad almost 3 days before I had to put it on the charger 5 hours screen time. Running Charmeleon v5.0.0 with stock kernel.

Hey man;
Sure the battery life in SGS3 is better, it has lighter processor (which doesn't help in heavy gaming, very fast in normal use though), more energy efficient AMOLED screen (which has less quality, but better brightness), and also the simpler TouchWiz UI (which is a bit childish in my opinion, but does the job well)
I get about 8 hours with heavy gaming (near 1 hours continuously) and web surfing (actually downloading, almost 500MB in total) and something like 1 hour watching music videos...
I get 2 1/2 - 3 hours screen time max! In the battery drain test my battery reaches 84% by the end of the hour, which I thought was great, but then again that test requires you to put your phone in Airplane Mode. The screen is a battery-hog imo, but its beautiful even with the stuck pixel I have haha.
LEt us get some more people to answer this one before we reach any conclusion.
Results are inconsistent for sure. Few people like me are getting 2 days average and few 2 hours!
For me it depends on what is running.
Normally I get about 14 hours of moderate use with 2-3 hours screen time.
Today I'm at 10hrs with 1.25hours screen time and I'm down to 11%. But I believe it is due to having wifi and viber running.
Personally it's my wifi that is really killing the battery. But given how I use it, it is perfectly acceptable
Is it true that non-rooted HOXs have poorer battery stats as compared to those that are rooted? If so, why?
I'm not rooted and am on stock everything.
How exactly do I go about testing the battery on my HOX?
Any tips for better battery for non-rooted devices?
I get about normal usage ( 3G-1 hour, Tegra games- half our, Music- 2 hour, SMS and Calls) 10h, just SMS and Calls about 30h.
The number of hours i get varies from time to time . On normal usage including listening to music, messaging, playing games and talking on the phone i get approx 4-5 hours max.

@Skywalker, I am all stock. How do I go about making the tweaks in the Rom?
Very frankly after receiving OTA 1.28 my battery lasts 2 days after every charge . some tips.
1. While you are listening to music keep the screen off as screen sucks up most of the charge.
2. I do not let my battery go below 15 %, I have read that letting them go below a particular level reduces the actual life.
3.Try these small steps, it resolved the issue of low battery life for me as I had read it somewhere:
> Turn Wifi and then 3G off
> Turn either Wifi or 3G on again
> Do not keep both "On" at the same time.
4. Kill the Maps process by going to the task manager ( If not using it all the time).

I think turning off the screen while on a call or when listening to music will also aid in less battery drain. No?

Aokp and lean kernel battery life

I've gotten some awesome battery life with AOKP mr1 build 6 and Lean kernel 6.3.1 lately. Just thought I would share incase anyone else is looking for awesome screen on time. This is with stock GSM gnex battery.
Also, anyone know why Google services is so high on the list. It never used to be a month ago and I don't do anything different. Anyone else's Google apps draining more lately?

These kind of threads are discouraged. There are at least a couple dozen different combinations achievable and there is no reason for a thread for each. Just enjoy what you have.
Battery stats is always a relative statistic. You're just using less power from other areas.

OP not trying to change the subject or take away from your battery pride, but.. This is a joke. The phone stayed on for three hours and this guy is so happy about it he started a new thread. Android has a BIG problem, or maybe the more accurate statement is the companies who manufacture Android devices do. Am I the only one who feels this way!? Definitely one of my biggest gripes about Android is the battery life. I would really like to not charge my phone everyday. I don't like the bulk of extended battery and there seems to be no end in sight.

I for one appreciate you reporting your battery life - probably didn't need its own thread (sharing the AOKP development thread would have been fine) but its good to give other users an idea of the kind of performance you're getting from your ROM/Kernel combo.
In regards to Android and battery life... Granted, its not like my Blackberry devices of 5 years ago, BUT, the devices are capable of much more. I charge my phone every night and sometimes even need a bump charge to make it through the day. Between my car charger and my office, I'm never in a pinch for some extra juice.
The way I look at it, if you want a car that puts out 500 horsepower, can't expect it to give you 40 MPG too.
Just my two cents.

Sticking with the analogy.. The problem is most of the cars being manufactured, and all of the cars worth having, are 500 horsepower now. But very few offer a larger gas tank, which would not be hard to do.
We need batteries like that of galaxy note 2, which is 3100 mah in a slim form.
Cool story OP.
This mind of threads appear almost once a week. We all know battery life is not that good for GNex. To gain 30min more battery life by trying so hard simply is not worth it.
Get an extended battery, 6 hours screen on time, problem solved.

OP since you live only 15 minutes or so away from me, and I am on Verizon, have you done any overclocking/underclocking? Undervolting? What apps are you using? Getting great screen on time can only get you so far depending on the apps you use.

[Review] HTC Desire Eye

I'm going to talk about a few things in this review:
Battery Life
The Sense UI
The Screen
BoomSound
Camera's
Round-up/overall impression
Battery Life
The battery life is actually pretty good for the 2400mAh it has, I can easily play games all day and it'll have 20-10% when I'm going to bed (wake up at 6:30am and go to bed at 10:00pm) So it's pretty good for me. Sometimes it'll even last up to 28 hours.

This image might not be totally representative because I didn't charge my phone last night and the night before, but you get the idea.
The Sense UI
I have never been using HTC before, but I like their Sense UI, it's very smooth and it just "works". I'm actually used to the Sony UI or even the Samsung UI on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 but I like HTC's UI a lot more than both Sony's and Samsung's. The Blinkfeed was something I was afraid of being too "present" but I've actually just got used to it and now I actually use it, it's not some trashy gimmick you wont use and hogs RAM, I'm really impressed.
The Screen
HTC Has put a 5.2 inch, Full HD 1080p screen in this device, and it's lovely. It's bright, I'm watching all kinds of TV shows on them (while relaxing the hottub ofcourse, because it's waterproof!) The looking angles are good aswell, friends can easily watch a youtube video with me without having to struggle. I also have no trouble reading content from my screen in the bright sun.
BoomSound Speakers
The BoomSound Speakers and waterproofing were what originally pushed me over the edge to get it, and it delivered, I'm loving these nice clear tunes they deliver, I'm preferring them over my regular laptop's audio (HP Elitebook with SRS Audio Pro). The bass meight be a bit underdelivering (when outside) but that's not something I really am worried about.
Camera's
The Camera's are lovely, and especially the camera app. They even got Instagram to somehow integrate the frontfacing flash in their app, so if you take a photo from within instagram you can use your flash on both sides! It really makes your photo's better. I'm a bit dissapointed in the night performance of the back camera, but when you turn on HDR and adjust white balance it's all good.
Here's a sample photo I took outside a few days ago:
Round-up/overall impression
So I´ve been using this device since release date because I´ve pre-orderd it, I have the blue non-AT&T version and it rocks, I'm using it in water daily and when it gets dirty, I just put it under the tap and dry it off. Overall, I'm quite impressed by how quick it is, It's Snapdragon 801 is lovely and even on playing heavy games it delivers what you expect from a high-end device. I'm not someone who used to take selfie's but somehow, I started taking selfie's more often because of the lovely camera I got now (well, I come from a 0.3 mp frontcam so that's not really hard to beat). Compared to a S5 I would take this over it any day. Feel free to ask me any questions you have, I'll answer them honestly.

On pace for over 8 hours SOT. This phone is a beast!
I had a much better one two days ago, but I didn't get a screen shot.
I average well over a full work day with more than 7+ hours of SOT.
I don't use a dark theme, but it's not a bright theme either. No power save use ever. I use bluetooth and headphones to listen to music throughout the day. Plenty of web surfing and media related tasks. I don't play games.
I believe I get better battery performance following charging via wireless instead of the Rapid Charger. It's just been my overall experience so far.

Not happy with my battery life at all. Even used Package Disabler with little success.
Don't know why it says 6 hours of screen time, I get about 3 1/2 and do intermittent quick charges as it drops into the 60-70% range quick.

There is something different or wrong, mines won't drop to 60% tell well the end of the day.
Rebooted after a few changes and waiting to see how it behaves, might need to factory reset. So far not impressed and over my return period (exchange for another note 5)

Crazy battery life haven't charged yet
Over 2 days lol sot over 3 hours never got this on my previously Note 4 , just imagine if i was a hard user would get sot probably over 6hrs and instead of 2 days , 1 day for having more sot.
Running On Samsung Galaxy Note 5 N920A
This version of the Note has me the most disappointed. I got less than 12 hours of use out of the phone, with it in ultra power saving mode for more that 50% of that time, just texting. I had my Note 4 with me as well, using that to listen to music, watch Netflix, and read on the Nook app, with wi-fi turned on but no cellular, bluetooth, or gps turned on, but I had over 50% battery left when the Note 5 died.
Battery life is great on this thing.

My battery has been good but not great and I think I know why. For some reason my Android System always seems to be whats eating up the most battery so I took a look at the running apps and found the following. Doing a little research before I disable them. The one that stands out to me is the IQ Service Agent.. I hope that's not carrier IQ.. See Screenshot:

AT&T never actually stopped using Carrier IQ. They were just doing a better job hiding it (or getting the phone manufacturer to bury it so deep that it's nearly impossible to remove.)
FML and I can't root my phone and get rid of it.. IT's causing my Android System to go nuts and always consume the most battery... This is disappointing.

AT&T has a 14 day return policy. If you are still within it, why not return the phone and get something else?
Yeah I'm within the 14 day return policy but nothing on the market is better than the Note 5 in terms of overall package. Guess I'll just ride it out. I like the Note 5 a lot and I guess if I can get a full day of use that's good enough.. Plus Marshmallow should fix a lot of issues that plague Lollipop. Here's to hoping we actually see M before the Note 6 is released..

Samsung isn't terrible when it comes to updating. Especially when you consider the amount of work involved in getting TW ported, and the high number of devices they have.
AT&T, on the other hand, might not accept that update from Samsung until 2017 or later.
I'm very serious when I say that if you keep this phone, accept it how it is today. Assume no bug fixes, no updates and no root. This way, you're prepared for one possible outcome and can only be pleasantly surprised.
(Yes, I'm having to do the same math. You can't imagine how hard it is for me to accept a phone with no root... but it's a good device...)
