[Q] Safe OC rate ? - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I like the Doomkernel but overclocking the GPU scares me somewhat (since you can't change the GPU clock rate)
If the GPU/CPU is broken I don't think I can afford a new one...
So like the title, what OC rate is safe to use ?

All phones behave differently so some phones will oc to 2 GHz with no side effects while some won't go past 1.4 GHz
So u should try it yourself

Oc above 1.4GHz without undervolt is dangerous
If you can undervolt 1.6GHz to 1250mV, 1.6GHz are safe, too
So just use 1.4GHz if you can't get a new phone in case you brick it

Just like a Computer CPU...you should only overclock in small increments..then check for stability.
Personally, i would advice against overvolting the phone..
I keep my phone @ 1.2GHZ..I don't find the need to go beyond this. Then again, i dont play too many games on it

I have "DooMKernel v4" and "Extreme Voltage Control" in the Arc S but did not appear the options to change the voltages. Why?

[Q] increase max cpu clock?

is it possible to overclock above 768mhz? my phone never gets warm and battery lasts 2+ days, completely stable at this speed, i want to learn how i can edit a kernel and increase the cpu voltage ever so slightly and increase max cpu clock and see whats stable, could you help me?
i think you will just start to get kernel panics if you try to go much higher .
i have another phone (lg 500) also with the same arm6 cpu that comes clocked at 600 from factory. i have the option to oc to 825 with custom kernel but it always panics at 806 and is stable at 787.
So i think if you want a faster phone go buy one

Nope.
P500 has an ARM11 MS7227 processor
Wildfire has an ARM11 MS7225 processor.

lol the chipset for the wildfire is MSM7225 but the cpu is arm6/11? on half of the sites is arm6 the other arm11..
Hi I have mine set to 710 and any higher starts getting random reboots.
But overclocking any higher than 768, your risking a chip melt or definitely shorting its life.

So I thought about overclocking. I never overclocked any CPU by now. No PC cpus, no mobile cpus
I just always read: Do not overclock! More heat production, more energy costing and of course: probably decrease device life-time and may damage the phone.
On the opposite there is: more cpu-power. WFS seems to be able to get OC'd to 800 MHz (which is 200 above standard and only 200 below Desire)
So, what can you tell me about the above conclusions?
Next question: Do I need overclocking, or is it just to win a p.... length comparing ?
I'm on stock European rom 2.3.5. I know I need custom kernel. which one I could use, how to flash? Which apps do I need furthermore?

No it's not just for a pissing contest.
Jikantaru's new kernel will allow you to set your clock to vary between 120 Mhz and 806 Mhz although 787 Mhz tends to work for those unlucky enough to have phones that freeze up at 806 Mhz.
The CPU doesn't run balls out all the time. It speedsteps as needed to save battery power.
You flash the kernel that you download to your SD card through CWM Recovery's Install zip from SD card feature.
Reboot and you now have Ext4 support for Link2SD, etc, and overclocking capabilities as well as a host of other kernel tweaks to handle memory management, etc.
As far as programs to set the clock with? SetCPU, Rom Toolbox, Nofrills CPU, Antutu CPU, etc.
I would choose "Smartass" as your governor and 120 and 806 as your min and max CPU settings and choose to set it at boot.
That's just my preference.
I personally bought Rom Toolbox Pro and manage the CPU settings through it.
It's got a host of other cool features all in one place and jrummy updates it very often with new fixes, features, etc.

The governor is the method by which the phone plans it's stepping up and down of frequencies. Smartass is a tried and true good combination of power savings and stepping to the plate with high clock frequencies when needed.
No you won't need anything extra. It's one of the settings in any of those programs.

Overclocking comes with no promises man. Mine's been overclocked since August so that's all I have to go on.
There is always a danger or risk when overclocking. The manufacturers determine the safe frequencies, temperatures, voltage, etc. based on scientific experiments in different environments. However, with that said, obviously, they are not infallable either. The best way to determine your risk is to think about what conditions you'll be using it in the most and what kind of stress it'll put on your phone's internals. Do some research and see what other people have problems with and under what kind of stress was the phone. Use common sense. Things like raising voltage and frequencies raise the temperature of the phone's internals, also. So, in turn, do you also have a case on the device that retains heat? Do you live in an humid/dry or warm/cold area? Do you do a lot of multitasking? Are you constantly on it? Hope this helps.

Installed the JokaWild v3 ROM on my Play and flashed the DooMKerneL v14 ,now i wanna know how to do a safe OC.

I dont generally OC my phone beyond 1.2 but you can use this app to run a sereies of tests to determine which OC speed is best for your phone as all phones are different.

I don't overclock mine past 1.4. My play actually reboots if I go 1.6 or more.
I Overclocked my phone to 1.5 and it worked fine. Then tried overclock to 1.6 ,and it's really working good! no bugs ,very fast and the battery stays cool.
I'll stay with my 1.6Ghz overclock ,I think it's enough
What governor / IO scheduler are you guys using? i'm in the same position (jokawild / doomkernel v14 and just installed nofrills cpu) and have read the FAQ, but the version i have seems to have considerably more governors than what has been listed

I'm on SmartassV2.
I once asked this same question ot DoomLord, maker of DoomKernel about which governor and IO to use for best gaming and all around performance.
His recommendation (whihc I have been using since and saw a noticable difference) was to use
Governor: Performance
I/O: BFQ
and I overclock mine to 1.2ghz. My first android phone i oc'd too much, heard a popping noise and BAM.....bu-bye. So I dont go too far..
I generally step up the speed one step at a time until I hit errors that cannot be explained or I get force quits because the phone is running too fast. I suggest going slowly and testing things out but using the governor Performance while the phone is changing. Right now I'm doing okay with smartass v2 at .60/ 1.5 ghz. I might try bumping it up to 1.6 ghz and see how that works tomorrow.

Epic It is like the phone has no battery cuz on this governor, the phone runs at max frequency.

I know I'm mad late, but I was wondering why my phone kept rebooting. I uninstalled all overclocking apps so I thought my profiles would return to normal. Turns out I must have accidentally set the profile to 2ghz max and 2ghz min somehow. My phone was super lagging and thank God it didn't burn out, smh...

I currently have my Play overclocked to 1.6 using the interactive governor. Battery life is great and it runs steady at 60fps in FPSE. Also Mupen64 runs much better. I haven't had any issues with it so far!

What scheduler are you using??
Mine is running fine on 1.4Ghz with SIO scheduler and InteractiveX governor, the bbatery life seems fine as well...
SmartAss always causing lag on me, dunno why...

Hey guys ive already overclocked my phone using the lubus gb kernelv12 and i gota say having the extra internal memory (EXTRA 400MB!!!) and the ability to overclock to 1.6ghz is nice, however there are some things i wana ask. Im running at a min 249 and a max of 1613 mhz using no frills cpu with smartassv2 as my governer and noob as be scheduler, it runs miracles in speed, everything i can run at high resolutions and play and top speeds. However i leave my phone like this all the time ( 249mhz 1613 mhz). The smartassv2 governer is ment to only use high cpus when needed, so that in theory means that i wont always be at 1.6ghz. Ive read on other forums keeping your phone overclocked all the time is bad and dangerous but is it really if the max cpu is only being used when needed? In otherwords should i leave it how it is or is it dangerous? My device is an xperia plat btw. :victory:

AFAIK only the Performance gov keeps the phone at the max allowed clock speed (1.6GHz in your case), so it's just fine as it is. You could, however, use an app (the only one I know that does this is SetCPU, there might be others) to make profiles so it'll only be overclocked when playing games/running benchmarks et cetera. This might save you some battery life.
CPU master by antutu allows you to set profiles but you need to buy the pro to do it

only faux kernel betas allow OC
big warning OC is bad for the HOX given the thermal envelope
you are risking both you battery and processor if you OC
i know you are used to OC from other devices but those had headroom, it is not the case this time, T3 is operating at its max thermal capabilities on the HOX

It's not stupid and I'm dying to overclock my HOX also. Unfortunately Faux's kernels won't let me overclock on my phone, I'm going to name my first kid for whoever is the first to let us overclock this beast .
As already said it gets already hot enough, overclocking will kill it.
And I used to love overclocking on my Xperia Arc, overclocked it 60%
But I think the HOX isn't made for it

the snapdragon 2 on the Arc had a lot of headroom
the chipset is rated @ 1.5ghz stable!
not the case with T3 its milking the very maximum of the 40nm process
in other words Nvidia is OCing its T3 out of box because their chips are designed to survive massive amount of heat (sadly it doesnt mean the battery or other components would survive)
it is already Overclocked lol
sometimes you have to listen to the "science" of it and surrender

I understand why people want to overclock. Why does someone tune a brand new sports car after all it is fast enough to reach the limit in no time.
What gets me is people posting "just leave it" "its fast enough". It's not your device and I'm sure they know its fast enough. Please those kinds of post really arnt needed.
As for the OC in faux's early (001bX) kernels overclocking was available although it was found there are 3 variants of the Tegra 3 SoC. And Asian variant, European and Australian variants. Each reacted differently to OC.
Taken from faux kerenel thread. Everything about OC'ing is from page 10~ to 45~ for anyone interested.

If you're wondering id love to have the capability of overclocking doesn't mean ill be overclocked 24/7
EDIT: @Kris underclocking is available on every kernel something like setcpu or sys tuner will be all you need. Although if your looking to keep heat down there's a thread on XDA about an app called corecontrol (not the one on play store) that can limit the Tegra 3 to 2 cores. Another thing too look at for reducing heat is undervolting. Sys tuner is also capable of this. Currently I believe faux's kernel is the only kernel with true UV control

I use Faux's kernels and even though I have the Asian one that supposedly can be overclocked to 1,700, mine maxes out at 1,500 just like all of the other ones. Still the Faux kernel upped my quadrant speed from 4,700 to 5,000 and seems quicker so I still use it daily. I'm still waiting for the first kernel that can be overclocked .
Only the early kernels had OC it was removed to avoid bootloops in the euro and aus tegra3's the 003bx kernels don't have oc ability

OK, so I currently have my PLAY set to 1.2ghz. My first android phone I OCd from 600mhz to 1ghz and one day while playing a game I heard a loud pop noise, then my phone shut off and that was that... toast. So I have been extremely leary of overclocking now. I am aware there are users who have OCd their phone to 1.4+
My question is how safe is when I use No frills to OC is it ramping up the volts to get that extra power. Also according to the Snapdragon layout it lists the S2 in our phones as capable of 1-1.5ghz... does this mean I could technically go up to 1.5 and be OK? I have a large 3600mha mugen battery, so thats not an issue, but what I am afraid of is popping my phones brains out...

We're on the MSM8655 instead of the 8225. iirc, the difference is that it's cdma oriented as opposed to gsm
Each chip is different in what it can handle, so your best bet is to test it out, slowly. When your system starts to act funky, step down the voltage/speed levels.

Just thought I would open this to everyone on R800x, interested if people could point there OC status below.
Mine is still on 1.2ghz. with Performance and BFQ
Highest I can go is 1.6, but I keep it around stock or slightly underclocked, with SetCPU profiles that increase to 1.2 for games and internet apps. smartassv2 and sio for governor and scheduler.
I heard that underclocking can end up reducing battery life over time. Is there truth to this or is it just a myth?
1.6Ghz and Performance when the screen is on.
Stock when the screen is off.
Battery last all day, but I don't use heavily.

There's a large number of things that can adversely affect battery life, but by the time it becomes a problem, you'd most likely be on a new phone, anyway.

I tried my r800x at 1.6ghz (running Cyanogenmod 9 with stock kernal), and I was stuck in a boot loop that I had to fix through CWM Recovery. I am now running stable at 1.4ghz.
Yeah I'm on my 2nd xplay after I tried to oc to 1.6. My phone got extremely hot so I pulled the battery to let it cool. Upon booting my touch screen was non responsive. I don't ever go past 1.4 now.

Custom kernel such as LuPuS or DooMKerneL
1.6 min and max. SIO, with performance governor, then I switch it after 30% and lower to powersave sio, 804-416 Max or whatever those numbers are.
