What sort of battery performance are people seeing?

So I've had my Defy a week and I like it, more than I thought I would to be honest.
However, one thing that's bugging me is the battery life.
In their review, Engadget actually highlighted the battery life as one of the big plus-points of the Defy.

Now, I'm not using wi-fi calling but I don't think that should excuse or explain the fact that my phone barely lasts a day when at least one other handset has such significantly better battery life.
Anyway, I was just wondering how everyone else's Defys were performing.

Im coming from a vibrant and the battery on this is the best on android so far that i've ever used(g1, mytouch, mytouch 4, vibrant, etc.

If you don't mind me asking though, how long do you go between charges?
As I said, I'm lucky if I make it much more than a day - certainly two days isn't possible.
But I'm not a particularly heavy user, a bit of internet and a few texts here and there but very little in the way of calls, so I kind of feel like I should be getting more out of the handset.
When I check the battery usage, it's quite often ~40% each for 'Mobile Standby' and 'Phone Idle'.
So the vast majority of the drain is just from the phone being on, not from anything I'm actively doing.

Is this your first smartphone? =)
I go a day and a half or so. I'm heavy on web use and playing 'slice it' all day.
for my usage, im THRILLED to have a phone that can still have 30-40% at the end of a long day.

Just try to reboot the phone after fully charged and detached from power. There is an issue with the "suspend" process in some cases (not only on Froyo 2.2) which disappears after rebooting. Mine lasts 2-3 days with average use.

I can use the web steady for 5 hours, this includes some streaming video, if I start at 100% its down to 10% by then. At work it lasts easily all day but it gets little web usage and maybe an hour of talking. I use battery booster and advanced task killer, my backlight is set at 70%.

With moderate use (some calls, lots of texts, some web browsing) I get 2 days. It needs to be charged at the end of day 2, but I'm happy with it. I don't have any ot the social networking crap on so it's not constantly syncing. I think that may have something to do with it. I keep my backlight way down too.

Battery life? i got defy just a week ago and first impressions are good. You know, in the first days you make yuor phone working a lot, testing all the features, trying new apps from the market (so internet connection always on) , watching some movies, playing 3d games!
So a really heavy use, but power lasts at least 1,5 days. So i think using the phone moderately makes the battery life easily up to 3 days.
Try some task-killer app, and then test the power duration. Some softwares stay in background and keep draining power.

And I don't see what that's got to do with anything.
My battery life seems to be noticeably poorer than what the majority of people here are quoting.
If I were to use the web for 5 hours, there's no way I'd have anywhere near 30-40% of my battery left.

Having looked at your link, it sounds as though when that's happening, people can see the Suspend process listed in the break-down of what's using the battery.
I've never seen it listed, so I'm not sure that's the problem here.

I've got Spare Parts installed and it's set to 'aggressively' monitor and kill processes.
A friend recommended it over the likes of Advanced Task Killer because it's supposed to be better at differentiating between apps that are safe to kill and parts of the core software/system that could cause issues if closed.
I get what you're saying about using the phone more than normal because it's new but in the 8 days since I got it, I've spent 7 at work, so I haven't had that much scope to mess around with it.
I've switched the screen from automatic brightness control and I've disabled the background syncing for facebook, so hopefully that'll make a difference.
If not, since it's just over a week, I'm well inside the 28 days I can have it swapped for being faulty.

My defy runs for about 40 hours on one battery charge.

i have to charge mine everyday at night after using it whole day, time to time. Not bad tbh.

A task killer is NOT necessary.
It seems like blur services are push rather than pull which uses much less battery (think blackberry). But im not 100%.
I've set up yahoo, corporate, facebook, and picasa just to test it out and it didn't make much difference in my battery life.
I consistently get a day and a half (unless i play games). Can push to 2 days if i put on airplane mode overnight.

Found this on a german forum, as you can see, he was not in flight mode. I guess my desire's battery won't last that long.

I can go about one full day with moderate/somewhat heavy usage. Won't last 2 full days though.

I mean, if I use my browser say and then finish using it and know I won't need it again for a while, why prevent me from actually closing/killing it?
It seems so ridiculously counter-intuitive.
Plus, if it's really not necessary, then why are so many of them being developed?
Even Samsung are producing task managers now for devices like the Galaxy Tab - if it really wasn't necessary, surely one of Google's top hardware partners would know that.

And samsung is so great at making stuff...? Touchwiz??
Also, samsung's task killer does not show inactive or background apps like most task killers do.
What is the harm in the browser being open? It uses no cpu+ this phone has more than enough ram that it doesn't need you to close apps to keep things running smoothly.
It also will not improve your battery if you arbitrarily close an app only to re-open it later and use more processes.
Just my 2 cents on this topic.

Something i already posted in a german forum about my battery life:
2,5h gaming (Zenonia),
3h mobile internet (ICQ, Yahoo-mail, web, market)
2h of activated WLAN and deactivated sleep to copy stuff from pc to Defy
1,5h music (radio)
and 1h (and 6 minutes lol) of phone calls
After that day, i still had 30% of battery.
The maximum i reached were 75 hours including MY normal use with some mobile internet, some texting and 1 or 2 calls...maybe an hour of gaming at most.
I did not charge it first when i got it, because the battery was at 80% already/still and i wanted to play around.
Current running time: 26 hours...i activate plane-mode at night from now on. Low 70s now.
Everything at minimum display brightness (30%?)

In my opinion, a task killer is absolutely necessary.
All the apps launched keep consuming RAM even if they're not in use. I brought back 106 mb last time i performed a task killing! In most of the cases less ram means worst performances / more work for cpu.

My biggest gripe with this phone: Battery Life

I LOVE the Galaxy Nexus, but the rate at which the battery discharges is just ridiculous. I'll use the phone for 15 minutes doing things like Twitter or Web Browsing, and it'll discharge 5% in that time. To me, that is horrible. I'm being really conservative too. Throughout a day I try not to play videos, games, or anything else intensive because I know it'll ruin my battery life. Even on standby it discharges 5% in an hour. Typically I lose about 10% an hour and my max has been 12 hours so far.
I have auto sync turned on and keep the screen low when possible. I NEED auto sync on because of the nature of my work. Compared to my iPhone 4S battery is downright pathetic.
Today my usage consisted of one phone call, a few text messages, lots of Twitter, and light web browsing. Nothing too crazy. Again I'm being really conservative with my usage whereas on my iPhone I can do whatever I want and not worry. I'm just not seeing how people are getting 15+ hours and claim heavy usage. I'd love to believe that! The battery drains so fast during normal usage it may be a deal breaker for me.

It sounds like your definition of light usage is wrong.
I wouldn't consider heaps of twitter and some web browsing light usage. I would consider it moderate usage, in which case you seem to be in line with everyone else.
I agree with you in that the battery life isn't quite what I would have liked. Ideally I wouldn't have to worry about battery at all, and I'd be able to play games and browse the web as much as I like, but for normal usage it's fine.
The next Nexus though, man, that will only have to be charged once a month. I can't wait.

Twitter hardly taxes the processors at all. Refreshing it every so often should hardly take any battery life at all. Web Browsing I can understand, but my total time browsing today probably amounts to 10 minutes total.

I wonder how much of the drain is attributed to the 4.65" screen. It's a monster.

Most of it. 720p Super AMOLED HD is killing the battery. The only way to last a long time is to not turn the screen on.

almost 3hours of screen from 10h standby!! mate give us a break and get back 4s. !!
heavy usage not low!
i can see low signal (coverage) what can also produce higher battery drain.
twiter running 24/7 in backround sync on + wifi + games...
i dont know what you want... you will never get anything similar from for example HTC sensation or even your favourite 4s.
dont take it on bad way..but if you dont know what to do - try to save your battery..
-lower your screen britness
-remove/disable apps that are producing the heavy drain (use betterbatterystats app)
-stop playing games - if you wanna long life for your battery.
-etc...

People using a G2x claim to get a day and a half... I'm lucky to get out of work. Push email for work is to blame I think. I get tons of emails (100 a day) and I think its taxing. From your pics, the screen used over 50% of it. That's a lot.
Sucks.
Also make sure your aren't turning on the screen every 5 minutes to check the status. Since your coming from an iOS, are you closing apps properly (back = close, home = minimize).
I'm not saying your crazy but just saying.

I had the same thing happen with the Nexus One. The battery wasn't that great but, got better after a few charge cycles.
I've never had a Android phone that could match the battery life of the Iphone. I can sit the iphone down at night without putting it on the charger and, if it's at 100% it will be at about 90-95% when I wake up. I did the same thing with my Mytouch 4G and, it was at 15%
To the OP, I would recommend keeping a charging cable with you when you out and about especially in your car. I've had car docks with a few of my android phones and, always keep the phone docked when I'm driving somewhere. It really helps.

What you also need to remember is this is the first release of ICS and is still in development so battery life my be improved in the next update. Like you mention iPhone4S there was massive battery leakage in the first release of IOS 5 which Apple apparently fixed in the newest update.. So maybe in the next update we can expect some bugs ironed out.

Used to only have ONLY 2-3 hours screen ON on my Vibrant so I know how SAmoled looks like.
I know iphone battery is good, but you need to consider the screen size too..
Get a spare battery with your "light usage", but I am thinking how much would it cost becoz of the NPC antenna.

Too good thing is, unlike iPhone, you can buy a spare battery and carry it with you.

3 hours of screen use is what the problem is. That is a long time. I wouldn't complain about that at all.

I already said I didn't play any games today and my screen brightness is low. For some reason Shadowgun stays in the battery info screen. I played the game two days ago and manually closed it out. Even after rebooting the phone its still there.
I'm being 100% real, stop trying to make excuses or act like I'm an iPhone fanboy. The Galaxy Nexus combined with ICS is the best phone I've ever used! I'm just terribly disappointed with the battery life.

Twittering all day is sucking up battery because of all the data use. Dude, youre not a light user with 3 hours screen time moderate, possibly heavy depending on background stuff sycing automatically. You have some tweaking to do, not whining.

3 hours is not that much. Seriously. It shouldn't be damn near dead after 10 hours. Imagine if I decided to play a game for 15 minutes or watch 2 YouTube videos.
I bet if people were getting an hour and half with this phone, all the fanboys here would say the same thing. "Man, an hour and a half is a long time! You should be happy with that!".

I've tested out the battery difference by turning off auto sync. Doesn't make a difference at all. Fact of the matter is that the battery drains like crazy when the screen is on.
I'll just turn my phone on because actually using it is frowned upon here.

I love the battery life of this thing! Its unbelieveable...

The battery life is Godly on the Galaxy Nexus (Mine's a GSM model...I have no clue about the CDMA version)
With around 10 calls made, my brightness using the power control widget at "half" (I think its something like 40%), wifi on all day, data on, bluetooth&GPS off, NFC off, and almost 2 hours of onscreen time spent texting, surfing the web and gaming I got almost 22 hours on battery with 46% remaining! Pics for proof:

For those interested in getting this type of performance, I have sync OFF and manually sync whenever I want to check something (mail, weather widget, etc)
I have not had a phone with this great of battery since the Xperia Ray. This is unbelieveable though.
Also for those interested this is what I am running for ROM:

On another note, could you tell me if games are able to push background data with auto sync off? I've always wondered that.

For what it's worth, Samsung said this phone should have a six day standby time and twelve hour usage time...
Maybe turning all the features of the phone off will help, but then why have a phone like this if you limit it so much?

Its not really limiting it though.
If I want to see the weather, I touch the widget to sync. If I want to see if I got any mail, I go into the app and it will sync...I get my data when I choose to.
I don't own anything to hook up via blue tooth, and I will just turn GPS on when I check google maps, takes an extra 3 seconds.
I am not missing out on anything, I am literally getting 2 days between charges. But I charge every night anyways, so I can basically surf the web or do whatever on the device all day and still have a ton of juice at the end of the day.

you should update your kernel to 1.10, reports have said that it brings back battery of 1.7.4 but also ups the overall speed/smoothness of the phone

Yeah I mostly just call, text, websurf, and game. So it works for me.
In comparison, using my Xperia x10, Samsung Captivate, Desire Z, Desire S, Xperia Arc, Nexus S, and Xperia Ray I never got battery life like this. The Ray was close, but this is even better...considering the size of the screen this is really great in my opinion.
I just love this device so much, I am thinking I will just always stick to the Nexus line of devices for now on.

Would that give me even more battery?
I think I am just impressed with this so much because next to what I was running at stock (4.0.1) this blows it away.

Having the screen on for ~2hours is not a clear representation of it's battery life.

You disable auto sync.. that means you have no life.. you can't call your phone as "smartphone"

I too think this phone has best battery life ive had particularly idle time. Screen on is a tad high, but all averaged together gives this phone excellent battery life.

Look, Samsung has NO way to give standby times when everyone uses their phone differently. I sync differently from you. This phone WILL get six days standby. My old Vibrant is rated at 16 days standby, and you know, it just about will get that. "Standby" times aren't "my screen is off". Standby times are no data/wifi/sync and my screen is off. My mother has my unlocked Vibrant on AT&T. She doesn't have a data plan. Data/Sync is off. It's used as a PHONE. After her normal use, which is about 10 minutes of talking a day, it'll be at around 40% after 6 days. At that point, she usually charges it... and that's with evil, battery draining TouchWiz! There is no way for a manufacturer to adequately predict standby times with a device connected to a data network.
Honestly, for the life of me I can't figure out why this is an amazingly hard concept for people to grasp. Just because it's a "smart phone" doesn't mean that manufacturer's test battery life with data/wifi on. Probably because unlike the majority of people in every random battery thread on the internet, manufacturer's realize that once a data network comes into play, usage/sync WILL be different. Even power consumption can vary from tower to tower.

What do you feel is a clear representation?
I've a feeling every person has a different opinion on this.

I'm impressed
I get up at 4.30am for work
get home about 6pm
I have about 60% left
then I destroy that as its unlimited data plan inc tether is my broadband at home.

Perhaps you're giving Samsung too much credit. Apple lists the details of their battery tests on their site, and when they say "10 hours of use", it's not piddling around with sync off, location off, etc. it's actual use (calls, web browsing, video, music).
Look at gsmarenas battery tests http://blog.gsmarena.com/samsung-galaxy-nexus-battery-life-fully-tested-results-come-out-disappointing-test/.. Galaxy Nexus is tied for second worst and all phones were tested the same way. Maybe "real world" use will affect a single device from day to day, but when a phone is compared to close to twenty other phones under the same conditions, it makes you realize how poor the battery life is. Maybe 4.0.5 will make things better... I hope so.

Battery percentage setting issues

Hi again,
Just about to give up on this tablet when I noticed that it seems to be the battery percentage setting that is causing my charging and discharging issues.
With the setting turned on and the percentage visible, the battery seems to discharge and charge oddly, and also the percentage shown does not reflect the amount shown on the battery icon, or at least it rarely does, but it varies.
With the percentage setting off, the discharge seems much slower and predictable.
If you have a p600, could you possibly try this for me with and without and see if it matches with my findings?

There's a good guide on here for optimising, it has helped a lot, definitely worth a look :good:

With it on I have noticed............ If I remove charger at 96% next thing I notice battery is at 100% and my battery app charts that jump.
I'm using Battery HD, are you using a battery app also?

Thanks for the reply. I'm not using any battery app, just the one that comes with the stock tablet.
I think I did encounter the same thing as you, and also unplugging at 100%, then taking it upstairs and looking and it was 96% or so, and then after a restart, it was 100% again. Very odd, but it doesn't do it for me unless the percentage setting is enabled.

No i suspect my device might have some deeper issue. I can drain the battery from 100% to 0 in an hour of playing games but if i turn off the note and turn it back on, it'll be back at 60% or whatever it's actual battery level is. I can rinse and repeat and slowly get it down to 0. Either way the battery drains much quicker than it should. It could probably only last 6 hours of screen on time with very light usage. I might need to get motherboard or battery replaced.
I am still hoping that its a software glitch and something like this could fix it.

Yeah, mine wasn't that bad, although bad enough. Hopefully you can find a fix without having to send it back.

I wonder if the tablet needs a little time to calibrate the battery usage, maybe there is an internal process that has to happen over time?

I've had it since it was released in october or november and the battery life used to be good and last 10+ hours and probably 5-6 hours while playing games. Not sure what happened in between. It has taken a few very light drops with no visible damage and i did break (bend) a charge with it in the tablet but the charging port seems normal and still works fine.

Just checked with battery % off for 30 mins and battery dropped 4% which is normal.

I still had crazy battery drops with the percentage turned off. so didn't seem to make any difference for me.

Is your unit still rooted????? If so have you tried removing root and installing the most current factory rom.
Have you seen this post "Longer Battery Life (or How You're Being Robbed!)"
It may help some that are having issue with battery drainage but after seeing your post #36 in the BATTERY posting .... I'm leaning towards a cracked or damaged board from the few drops you talked about.

I've tried unrooting and odined back to a factory rom, also cleared my SD cards, nothing helped so i'm back to being rooted for now. I've done a lot of the tweaks to improve battery life but whenever I play games, it just drains like crazy even with minimum brightness. The drops were very very minor, like from 1 foot onto carpet and with a case so I doubt that it was the cause but I guess theres always a chance.
I'm still wondering if I should just live with terrible battery life and stay tethered to a charger or risk sending it back to samsung and having them find out it was rooted and overcharging me for repair. And I love the device so much, I don't know if I'd want to give it up for a week or two.

What games do you play that drain the battery the fastest, maybe I have one and can see how it acts on my SM-P600 32gb.

Tested again last night and this does seem to be the problem on my unit. Just over 2 hours and the battery icon had barely moved, and looking in the settings, it showed that I had 84% left. Hopefully it wasn't a one off.

Knaa mate, the battery icon is bad on mine aswell, I think its just bad design by samsung. Have a look at the pic...

So, I wonder which is correct, the icon or the percentage? If the percentage is right, my tablet is faulty. If the icon is right, it would seem to be ok.
And all these reviews and people that get 10-12 hours, I guess they went by the icon?

The percentage gives a more accurate time I guess.
But people and myself use the "Screen on time" as the usage data.

Was doing ok last night and then came here and the battery took a dive. Went and grabbed adblock for firefox and ghostery and ghostery was reporting 65 trackers on this site. Also the malware popups were becoming ridiculous and they only happened here. Going to do a factory reset and not come come here tonight, see if that helps anything.
I did do a bit of a search regarding the malware here, and it was being reported as early as last june it seems.

another battery life issue

I'm sure this question has been asked before. But I'm coming from an iPhone so Neff help with this.
As soon as I start using the phone in the morning when it's connected to WiFi. Within a second of using it or 2 minutes if we're being realistic. The phone loses 2%. Is this normal ? Coming from an iPhone where 100% would last at least 20-30 mjnutes. I can't seem to find anything draining my phone either !

I think a longer observation period (a full day / through the night) will give a better idea of how your battery performs. Use the default power settings or other batter monitoring application like GSam Battery Monitor and compare it against other users here.

If did that across the whole day yesterday let me show you the result. I usually charge when the phone gets to around 35-40%

I just got my phone & I'm having the same issue, I read online that after a few charging cycles we should have alot better battery life

Had about 3-4 days worth this end will keep an update here. So far not bad been intense usage for about 2-3 hours lost about 25 percent. Could be worse

Well that's 3.5 hours of screen on time and you're at 45%. That doesn't look bad to me.

Okay just making sure I'm getting the full potential of the phone Lolz reviews kept saying 6 hours but that's assuming they let it get to zero

Any update?

Got nearly 20 hours off charge with moderate usage throughout the day with a mixture of WiFi and 4G. Turning power saver at 50. Phone had 33 per cent left by end of day.

Urban myths and old wives tales. Cycling the battery doesn't "improve" battery life on a Li ion battery. What you are possibly doing is making the battery meter more accurate (placement of the "high" and "low" flags that correlate voltage with "full" and "empty"). But its just a means of measurement, and this doesn't affect the battery life itself. Meaning, it doesn't "improve" battery life any more than messing with the fuel gauge in your car would increase or decrease the amount of gas in the tank.

This doesn't mean anything. The battery % is just an estimation based on battery voltage remaining versus how the phone "thinks" you are going to use it. Comparing 98% on Android versus 100% on iOS is apples to oranges. There is no standard for this, or reason to believe they are in anyway comparable.
As previously noted, 3.5 hours screen-on time with 55% drain (45% remaining) is very normal, even good. A lot of things affect battery life, not least of which is how you use your phone, and cell reception in your area. You will see a wide array of variance in the battery life people get. And since yours seems actually pretty good, I wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks [emoji3] it was actually &37 percent but that's still pretty good with the battery save g options available I should be able to exceed a full day in the event of an unplanned night out !

To be fair, I feel like Apple designs their phone where their first 20% will take forever to drop but as soon as it passed that point it falls to 0. And yes I've seen it shut down at 10, turned it back on it's at 2. Where as this phone's last 15% seems to take forever to drop.

id say thats pretty good life outta the battery. the more you use it the more its gonna drain. and those getting like 6 hours of screen on time are strictly on wifi at an office or something. if your out roaming with LTE and the such your probably not going to get 6 hours...

Intense usage on 4g with lots of camera usage and uploads music and a few phone calls. So far so good! Had more than enough when I got home to leave without changing I case I needed it

I feel the M8, and my past Android phones take a disproportionate amount of time to drop the first few % as well. Maybe not as much as what you are mentioning for the iPhone (couldn't personally comment). May have to do with the saturation charge that occurs when the battery nears full (in fact, you should actually leave your phone on charge for some time after it says full).
Also, the battery meter on any phone is far from accurate. It often can't really be trusted with be within 5 or even 10%. So that would explain why you saw it "jump" down 8%.

Yeah my point was that all these phones' measure battery differently and not exactly accurate so you shouldn't compare Apple to oranges. Oh and the jump in percentages was referring to the iPhones. If anything Android tends to jump up when turned back on lol.
