Q - ICS & Contacts Direct To Voicemail - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Do the new ICS roms restore the option to set certain contacts to always go directly to voicemail? This is a feature I have missed ever since I upgraded from my Moment running 2.2.
I know I can create a "silent" ringer, but I don't even want to see certain numbers calling... Like that damn window company that calls every week trying to get me to buy their windows!

You will need a Call Blocker app that can filter SMS and Voice calls.

How is Google voice on the Evo?

Hi,
I keep reading threads about using Google voice on the evo instead of the sprint visual voicemail. How are you guys using it (I hate to ask a really basic question)?
Do you just get an email in your inbox & check it? Is there a way to get a notification of an email? Is there an Evo app to use it?
I hate how I keep losing my voicemails when trying out roms.
Plus the new Cyan Froyo has that visual voicemail bug which keeps a perm notification. So if I cant beat them, how do I join them?
Thanks,
Rich
It integrates really well. The only thing missing is mms support.

I'm an Android AND Google Voice newb, but I use it for voicemail and love it. As you described, your voicemail is totally independent of Sprint and you can flash ROMs to your heart's content and always be able to read and listen to your messages from any PC with hiccups or issues. I also love the fact that you can have different greeting for different callers. You can send specific callers straight to VM, dial numbers from your computer, and other stuff I haven't really had the time to discover yet. Since it's free, why not give it a shot? You have nothing to lose.
Is there a specific app for it on android? Does a new voicemail pop into the notification area?
Have not set it up on my EVO, however on my Nexus I had Google Voice transcribe the voicemail and text me. Transcription was marginal, but 90% of the time I could get the gist if not I just listened to it.

Yes and yes. There's a Google Voice app in the Market which is free (Check the publisher, too) and integrates perfectly with Android. It gives you notifications for SMS, Voicemail, missed calls, the works.
The only downside, is if you're using AnyMobile AnyTime, incoming calls from cellphones show up as cellphones and are then charged as cellphones, BUT, outgoing calls go to a Google Voice access number, and are then charged as landlines. My work-around has been to use Sipgate ONE with Fring or another softphone; set Google Voice to ring your Sipgate number, then add your Sipgate account to Fring's SIP profile. Since Sipgate ONE has unlimited free incoming calls, and even Google Voice outbound calls are really billed as incoming (GVoice makes a call to you, and then makes a call to the target phone number), you get free unlimited calls over VoIP on 3G, 4G, and WiFi.
The only downside to this method, is you have to use a computer to initiate the Sipgate/GVoice calls, as the GVoice app for Android *only* manages Google Voice for the Android phone via normal calls, and not other phones, and unlike the iPhone, there's no web interface (you just get a web page telling you to download the app from the market).
I have set up Sprint to forward to Google Voice instead of my Sprint VM. I don't use it for making calls but more as a forwarding and management service. I like having a second number to give out to people other than friends and family where I can screen calls easier. The only downside is that Sprint rings like 6-8 times and then forwards to Gvoice which rings another few times. People get tired of waiting and often don't leave a message.
The Google voice app is awesome. You can also send/receive free text messages on the phone.
Google Voice is one of the best apps you can get on android. it completely replaces your text/voicemail apps. you can READ voicemail messages, have custom voicemail greetings for every caller, text from any browser, and so much more. It is a must have if you own an Android phone in my opinion

[Q] How can I re-enable visual voice mail?

After flipping between ROMS, I find my VVM is no longer working, nothing goes to my VVM. Even when I get voicemails, they do not show up in that app.
I did do something once when using CM6, I got a text message from that 9016 and called the number it said to retrieve it. Ever since my VVM has not been working. I am currently running Baked. Any suggestions?
I have the same problem on the Baked 1.5 rom. It tells me that I have a voicemail, but is unable to retrieve.
If it were me, I'd flash a stock rooted rom. See if voicemail works with that. If it doesn't, call customer service and tell them you are having problems with visual voice mail retrieval and if they would be so kind as to give your voice mail a full reset on their side.

Here's a few I googled and some possible fixes.
Oh, this is for the text from 9016 snafu. I don't know if it will help you.
Make sure under Call / Voicemail Settings that it displays your phone number. Otherwise I would wipe and reflash.

Lol. You will keep getting that txt. I'm not going to flame you but if you would of searched the forum you would of seen my post on vvm from yesterday or used the search feature I'm sure it would of popped up with vvm.
Anyways use the app private conversation from the market. Has a blacklist. Can do just SMS, phone call, and both SMS and phone call from a number. This is what I used.
Now go to settings and call setting, voicemail and make sure your phone number is in there if not change it. Mine was *86 so I had to change the number to mine. There ya go. Please do a little effort on searching. I use the xda app and the search always brings up roms and themes most of the time instead of what I'm looking for but I still try first and go to the forums and go through a big list.
Hope this helps.

You the man! This was the problem (for me at least). It had the option of using "carrier" or "google voice" for voicemail and neither one was checked. I'm assuming that's because the data wipe and installation of a new rom. I checked carrier and tested it out. It's now good to go.
Thanks!
Got it working =]
@martyzidek: I did search first, but I was probably overly specific and got no results from my search =[
@herbthehammer: I did just that, installed a plain rooted 2.2, and for good measure I then ran a Master Reset (##786#) since I already knew my code from trying to update the PRI. I double checked that my voicemail # was showing up correctly (thanks @dglowe343), then had my girlfriend call and leave a message. I then received 6 voicemails all at once: the one that my girlfriend just left and the 5 others that didn't show up. =]

Googlee Voice Notifications and calling?

Finally got around to use my Sprint number as GV number. This adds an option to send/receive text from GV. Way cool that I was able to text with just a wifi connection while in Dominican Republic w/o phone service.
Back in states now and I get sms twice, once in native app and once in gv... along with two notifications. Would like to use native sms and notifications, but can't figure out how to disable GV text notifications w/o also disabling vm notifications. Is it possible?
Options are for checkbox "notify via text msg" which I assume means a text msg will be sent to ur phone when u have gv vm/sms( which I've never gotten)? And the other option is to have status bar notifications, but I think that will disable both sms and vm status bar notifications.
Guess I could just disable notifications from native app, and uncheck send sms to this phone from gv on the pc?
Also seems the spring integration gv has removed the option to place calls using gv?

"Also seems the spring integration gv has removed the option to place calls using gv?"
the google voice app will change once u enable integration. You no longer need to use the "call using google voice" option because it will automatically use gv to make long distance calls for you. Billing for this is done through your google account NOT your sprint account and it no longer requires data (wifi or 3g) to call using gv.
It's integrated.
Regarding your notifications:
Menu -> More -> Settings -> sync and notifications
uncheck "synch inbox"
check "notify via text messages"
All text messages will now come through your native sms client only.
Of course you can still view your text in the gv app by forcing a refresh as well.

Lot's of settings from the PC and GV app, hard to understand how thew all work together? Tried lot's of combinations...
Think I'm gonna stop using native sms app and just use gv for all sms and vm. Nice that it keeps a log of all (both in and out) across all devices. And you don't have to restore sms after a fresh flash and wipe.
Does seem to be somewhat of a delay sending sms from gv. How do other's have it set up?
Can gv do mms?

For now on the PC:
Under phone.. uncheck receive text
Under vm/text..uncheck email and sms notifications to phone
Under native app...notifications off (will gv pick up inbound mms)?
Under gv app..sync inbox, uncheck notify via text msg, and check inbox notifications
Does that sound about right?

I think you're confusing yourself a bit...and me as well. What is it EXACTLY that u want to happen?
Do u want to receive text using the gv app or the native messaging app?
I receive all notifications through my native app only. I do this because you can only receive mms messages through the native app (GV does NOT work with mms).
I also receive vm notifications through my native app. However, in open the gv app to listen to them. This is the only reason I use the gv app.
If this sounds like what u want then do the following:
PHONE:
Synch inbox - unchecked
Text Msg - checked (btw..this option is the same as checking "receive texts messages on this phone" from the pc).
PC (voice.google.com) :
under voicemail - "Send a text (SMS) message to Cell" - checked
under phone - "Receive text messages on this phone" - checked (AGAIN...this is the same as checking "Text Messages" on the GV app on your phone)
Hope this helps.
Thanks! It helps a lot understanding that some of the gv app settings on the phone are the same as google.com/voice.
Yeah... way confusing. Started out as a cool way to get sms while overseas. When I came back it was weird to get double notifications and seeing some sms show up in the native app and some in GV. I think it would be a lot easier if GV had a way to differentiate between sms and vm notifications, but it appears its all or nothing. Options, to summarize:
1. Your way: all sms/mms and associated notifications come through native app. VM notifications also come to you as a text message, and you then open up GV to view/listen to vm. Question: Does GV keep a log of all your incoming/outgoing text messages?
2. My proposed way: all sms and vm and their notifications are handled by GV. MMS bypasses gv and I get the mms and notification in the native app (I turned native notifications back on). All incoming/outgoing sms messages are logged in GV (even text sent from native app) AND available across all my devices (Nook Color and google.com/voice)... which is kind of cool because I can pick up the conversation w/o my Epic. It's just weird how GV app breaks down the conversations... I've got like four different threads each containing several sms to/from Missy. Don't understand why they're not all combined as conversation with Missy.
So clear as mud... still interested in how others have it set up?
Yeah, I really hate how gv does message threading too...that's y I use the native app. Hopefully they upgrade the app soon. When they do I'll switch over completely.
All incoming text messages are recorded in gv whether u receive it in the native app or not. I'm not sure about outgoing though. I believe they are recorded too but the only way to know for sure is to test it yourself.

[Q] Skype as default dialer

Hi,
I have an evo with DeckRom on it (gingerbread). I'm trying to get skype to be my default dialer, or even better to have it prompt me for what I'd like to use as a dialer (phone or skype).
I can't for the life of me figure this out. Phone doesn't show up under settings-applications-manage-all. I've cleared defaults from gocontacts.
I've tried uninstalling skype, then rebooting the phone and redownloading the app.
Still nothing.
Other thing I might like is the ability to choose google voice to make outgoing calls if that is available.
Thanks in advance.
Bump for this. I'm having the exact same issue on my thunderbolt running stock/rooted debloat. Any help would be great as I'm retiring the thunderbolt and basically turning it intoca glorified pda/voip phone.
Google voice can be set as a default dialer/SMS/voicemail app but Skype I don't believe will set as a default however on decks gb rom in settings under calls you can set up a SIP account for voip calling with no added apps it will use the default dialer to call over ip
When I first installed skype, android gave me the option to choose how to complete the call. I no longer receive that option.

My goal is to either:
1. have the option of using skype, google voice or T mobile when initiating a call from my contacts list
or
2. be able to access and successfully choose a contact from my list when I'm on skype
At some point (I don't know why) my phone stopped giving the choice of using Skype, google voice or TMobile for an outgoing call. I would love to get that back since Skype doesn't allow me to use my phone contact list to make calls. Any ideas on how to achieve my goal?
Please tell me how to have a notification on my email when someone responds to my question.
Thanks

Same problem here since upgrading to latest Android. Did you find a solution yet?
bzzz
Did you manage to find the solution to this?

Google voice and Sprint.

So after rooting and flashing ICS I installed the gv app and accidentally chose to let it combine my numbers, it whatever the deal is with sprint. Now I can't send texts or make calls from my actual cell number.
How can I fix this? I used the Odin oc format all to update from fc whatever to the latest fe whatever. And the problem persists.

If what kbizzle said doesn't work then you can got to google.com/voice and in the settings there you can disable that, it happened to me once lol

omg... thank you so much. I was pressing "1" to answer calls for almost 3 weeks.. I had disabled/enabled/uninstalled/reinstalled/disabled internet calling/deleted phone and re-installed and all the while on my voice app said that it was not enabled and I thought I just had a kooky phone.
No more pressing 1 for me. awww, freedom.
2 Quick Tips:
1.) The Google Voice homescreen widget has clickable text toggles to switch
between: Do Not Use, Use For All Calls, and Use For International Calls, and Ask
Every Time.
2.) As long as Google Voice call forwarding IS SET to "forward" and "Enable
Google Voice on your Sprint Phone" IS NOT ENABLED, you can save the inbound
GV number as a contact (also select custom ring) so you know when someone is
calling on that line. Additionally, GV can be set to screen incoming calls.
I generally toggle between "Do Not Use" and "Ask Every Time" when I want to dial out using my GV #.
Lol, never forget to go to google.com/voice after installed voice, it will take over your phone, every time I got a phone call it would send me texts and emails and all kinds of crap, receiver a text I'd get a text gv text, email, a letter in the mail, crap, change those settings lol!!!
