Razr to Nexus? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Has anyone here owned a Razr AND a Nexus? I have a razr now, but I'm shopping around for a Nexus for something different.
Thoughts on one vs the other, or just opinions on the Nexus in general?

I had a RAZR. Loved it. Missed the ics though. I have a nexus now. Kind this phone too. But I do find myself missing that moto. Gets way better signal. I wish I had both phones. Nexus to play with. RAZR for my every day phone.

As pointed out by others, Verizon has tweaked the dbm reporting services on the Razr to indicate more signal than it actually is. The Nexus displays signal strength accurately, while the Razr bumps it up a bit.
Google around for sources, there are plenty of sources on this.

That's exactly right.
The gnex reports signal a lot more accurately.

I own the maxx and just picked up the nexus for my wife. I'm running an ics leak on the maxx and she is getting by on 402.
The nexus is a great device and as I use my maxx it is also a great device. Best thing about the nexus is there is never a moment of "oh crap if I flash that I maybe stuck!" W moto and the locked boot loader I am in that "oh crap" gray area. Being stuck on 403 isn't bad for now but it is what it is.
What exactly ate you looking to know about the difference between the 2

The Galaxy Nexus signal bar shows data signal, all other non-AOSP phones show voice signal.
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium

This is true, the bars vary from phone to phone. But the Galaxy Nexus radios were known to be worse than the 2nd gen LTE devices (RAZR, Rezound, even the Spectrum). If you'd look at the raw dBm the Nexus would routinely measure lower.
I'm in the market for a phone soon, what have the IMM76k radios done for this? Has anyone measured dBm of those radios in particular vs one of those other phones?

Should I try for a Nexus?

I am on my 2nd RAZR and it drops data connection every day just like the old one did.
Verizon is going to call me soon and I wanted to know if I should go for this phone or not for holding 4G LTE on verizon. or does Verizon just suck?
Thanks
If you want a fun and nice device: yes.
If you are going to come here and bash on it once you get it because its not perfect: no
Make a wise decision and be sure before you buy. Too many people buying blindly and not understanding the pros and cons. Then we get to hear another 50 threads on why the phone sucks.
I don't go bash things, just because of a one time thing or because it has a dead pixel. I am not buying anything, I am asking if I should go for this phone or not because the razr's I got do not work right. 100% stock by the way and no root.

The nexus drops data just as much
Sent from my Samsung GNexus <3
I understand your concerns, I had similar problems with a couple of Motorola phones. I actually first exchanged and then returned my Motorola phone from Bell (in Canada) because my data kept dropping too. To replace it I picked up the GNex and have not had any of those problems ever since. I was in the same boat though wondering if it was the carrier or the phone....I say now that it was the phone.

how much data do you use?
I am on the unlimited plan and I have avg about 60GB per 30 days. I only used 29GB and I am near the end. I think the 94GB month did it in. ( well I think that one was bad.)

Yes I know, thats why I want the best phone at holding 4g lte and I don't think the razr is it.
Honestly I think I've read topics around here saying the nexus drops data ocassionally on the Verizon nexus. So read around first. Also the Verizon version gets super poor battery life. Also people periodically bash the screen.
But my GSM nexus is plain and simple the best phone I've owned. So I say go for it.
What do you meen by "super poor". I have herd the Verizon nexus does drop data, but I can't see it being like the crap I have to put up with. I have seen the screen and it's better than the razr.
You have the RAZR maxx?

Nope just a Droid razr and a Samsung galaxy s2. I don't have a Maxx.
Offtopic: Can you point me were the GB stock roms are for the S2. ( ICS has been giving me some data issues, but not as bad as this RAZR.)

OP, I'm actually about to make the switch today (Wednesday the 11th) getting in the mail from Verizon, I'm on my 5th Razr since 2-10. I've had alright battery life, and horrible data drops with all them. If you want to wait a couple days, I can give you an idea of what to expect since I'm doing the exact same thing you're thinking of.
Don't get the nexus expecting better reception and less data drop. The nexus gets significantly worse signal than my droid charge did. I love it just the same though. It could just be verizon's network coverage in your area.

[Q] Should I switch back from the Razr to the Nexus

Originally I bought the Verizon Nexus on Launch day. The phone's signal and battery was horrible until I rooted and loaded the newest radios available but even then my signal strength was pretty bad.
I eventually exchange the Nexus for the Razr because I was told Motorola has the best radios around. The Razr is nice and all but its impossible to get a stable version of ICS on it. I hear rumors that with the release of 4.0.4 for Verizon's Nexus the signal issues have been solved. I would like some feedback on everyone's experiences so I know if I should switch back to the Nexus or stay with the Razr.
What do you guys think?
Yes.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Some people still have signal issues, but I've seen fewer with issues since the second 4.0.4 OTA that was grabbed. The Nexus will likely also see software support longer, and the radios will continue to be tweaked and improved as more and more data is received from new radio performance.
That's a hard desicion I have my nexus on sprint and I got no problems but my nexus s 4G had a lot radio issues idk if they got fix with ICS but what features are you looking on a phone ? If you don't want to carry an extra battery (I carried an extra battery stock one doesn't cut it) then I would keep the rzer Max(if you have the one) and idk how cameras compare I do know that galaxy nexus is good enough for me but it could be better

I'm a power user. I want to tweak and play. I don't have the Razr maxx so the battery life is comparible to the Nexus but I at least could run the extended battery with it. I loved my nexus when i had it. the only complains I had were signal. Other than that I loved the phone.
I keep hearing that the Nexus will be supported longer and that they will eventually work out the signal issues. Thats all well and good but its already been 6 months. will it take them another year and half to get it sorted out? So far Google has not been quick to release updates to the Nexus. I think Verizon might be the problem.
Another option for me is the Rezound which now has ICS.

Sprint doesn't have LTE anywhere yet so I don't think you can say its fixed with Sprint quite yet. You can't compare the GSM version because it isn't using the same hardware or firmware. If it was a network issue then why is it that the Nexus is the only phone to have these issues. I switched to the Razr because it didn't have the same issues. The Rezound also appears to not have the signal issues the Nexus had. It sounded to me like the Nexus's issues were radio firmware related. My question is are the issues fixed with the new firmware or should I go to the Rezound?
Do whatever you want OP. Posting here and asking that question will just get you "yes" answers. If going back the GN is something you really want to do then do it. It's what I'd do (because its on the GN forums and I own one... if you post on the RAZR forums then RAZR users would say stay with the RAZR).

the rezound has a solid radio and ICS. it actually has a really good chipset even on 3g, you can call and use data at the same time, something only it and the thunderbolt can do on CDMA. but the ICS builds are all sense based at the moment. there is no aosp, and there won't be until the RIL is cracked and released.

Thinking of moving to the G3 from Photon

I'm a total Moto fan because of the radios they have and the Photon has been an awesome phone. Thing is I went into the Sprint store today to check out the new stuff and the G3 was just so sexy. I'm eligible for a new phone at the end of August and I'm wondering if you guys think it would be a good switch or should I wait for the new Nexus around November?
Specs are meh, screen is blah.

S3 is the best phone yet.... Battery is so much better than the rest, signal comparable to photon screen awesome.

The screen is better on the s3 but not in the sun. The radios are a step down from the Photon, though. Battery life for me is pretty much equal between the two. I only moved to the s3 because my gf needed a new phone so I upgraded. The BEST things about the s3 is that there is more development and more accessories available. It's definitely a solId step up, but not revolutionary.

I dont think you will be disappointed if you get the S3.The hardware is top notch and there are some great developers working on it. We dont know what the new Nexus(es?) will be yet. Definitely.....a few steps down even. That is my only complaint. I've tried every radio and reception is horrible on this phone. My og Evo, my coworkers' evo 3d, evo lte, and even lg viper all get much better reception. I though it was defective, so I exchanged it......only to have the same reception with the new one.
samsung's notorious for terrible radios, that's a given.
I switched fro the4 Photon to the SG S III and I can tell you 1st hand they are almost equal DBM, and antenna signal wise. I still have my Photon, and the SG S III is way better in every step of the way. Antenna wise the Photon is a bit stronger but not much. They seem to always be with in a bar or1 dbm difference. In weak signal areas the Photon is better only by a hair. GPS wise all seems equal. Everything else the SG S III blows Photon away period. OG EVO then EVO 3D which was trade in for a Photon, now SG III.
Wait for photon q if radios are what ur after its tempting
But I can stand right next to the tower with my photon and still get very low data speed, so signal strength doesn't matter really.

I see it as this you have at least another month before the new nexus devices are announced you can hold out since your upgrade isn't till the end of August any way. See what google has to offer and hope motorola is making the new nexus device which would make sense since they pretty much made the new photon and the atrix HD look kinda crappy in comparison to their OG models.
I've been considering about getting the next nexus and dropping skinned phones all together but it always seems to me the nexus line is always inferior in some hardware specs. Not saying they suck but some of the specs don't make me at least say hey I'm gonna drop my 4.8 sexy for a 4.6 with .03 or so space for nav buttons and no external and possibly no removable battery.
Weigh your options in tech you'll always be disappointed in some aspect or another

I have a Photon, and a GS III and I am not getting what you are getting reception wise. The signal even in my house which is a bad reception area is acceptable. The signal and -dbm are usually with in 1 point and most times on par.... or the same. I can say based on my unit Don't look back. I still am always checking reception with both side by side!
Hardware wise I don't think there is much of a comparison between the two phones. I do agree that Samsung's radios suck though, and Sprint's network doesn't make it much better. On my E4GT I used to get data roaming ALLLL the time. Not on my S3 but I still get 1X in places that should easily be 3G. For example, I go to the local Applebees a lot and when I'm sitting at the bar I get 1X even though every other carrier gets 3G in that same area smh.

Do like I did.....buy, and try it. But, hold on to the Photon and check how they both receive signal side by side in areas that you know signal reception is weak. I ditched my photon after the 2 day test. I am still holding on to it also....the Photon that is...The GS III blows the Photon away, and this is coming from someone that has a high tech review, built a 750 rwhp Supra, and high speed computer rigs to trade \securities and game.

That's a tower issue I bet....for me this phone is very close to the Photon. This is not a touchy euphoric feeling either. I still have my Photon to tesrt signal reception side by side. Robert from S4GRU did a comparison test and said that the SGIII is very strong signal wise. He is a one of the administrator signal tech's on the forum also. I didn't need him to tell me this since I have a Photon to test reception against. He took various phones including the Photon and did a signal and -dbm test in strong and weak reception areas with 4-5 phones from Sprint side by side that was donated by members for the test.
I believe those having issues with reception may be having network vision upgrades that are affecting signal like I have from time to time here in NY. I have received 1.9 mbs downloads from time to time.....it's only a matter of time that LTE goes live here in NYC. Even when LTE goes live all towers are not going to be completely functional until 2014.
Thanks everyone for the input :good:. Guess I'll be getting the SGSIII at the end of this month or the beginning of next. Woot!

I'm looking into getting this phone with VERIZON and just wanted to read some inputs of what you guys & girls think of your Galaxy Nexus 4G?
I'm currently rocking a HTC Evo 4G with Sprint but no 4G due to location (Miami) and I have 4 more days to decide if I should stay with Sprint or go to Verizon due to lack of Internet Services.

But I'm really digging Jelly Bean!

That's why I said "Sensor" 5MP Sensor could perform better then other 8MP Sensor.
It can all depends on the (Aperture) of the "Glass"
So if the Sensor kicks low performance, the GLASS can make it pop. But not the other way around.
Thanks
The GNex camera is fine, everyone complains about it but unless you're trying to be a camera pro, its just fine.

I left sprint for Verizon just a couple of months ago. Left because of the same reason, my part of Ohio won't have 4g for an unforeseen amount if time. Couldn't be happier now though. the difference between my service is amazing. 3g and 4g is like night and day. Bottom line is I get better data speeds on 3g with Verizon then I ever did on sprints 3g. Unlimited data is great if you can use it, but I couldn't use Pandora, play music, or even watch a 3 min. That's good to know about the service & camera! Thanks...Any good or bad issues with the Galaxy Nexus?
May want to research battery life and screen issues.
Although battery life is very subjective, overall it seems as though people are having issues with it. There are extended batteries that can help with this issue so I would look into that as well.
There are problems with the Nexus screen ranging from banding to yellowish tints. Some people have exchanged phones multiple times and still have had screen issues, so this is one aspect I would definitely research thoroughly before buying.
I just ordered the phone so I can't comment on that, but as for service it seems anything is better than Sprint for data speed. I'm running far away from Sprint (and contracts in general). If I were to sign a contract I'd prob get the GS3... not sure if VZW has it.

Had pretty much the same scenario. 2 Evo 4G and ridiculous coverage. We both switched over to Verizon and a GNex. I wouldn't hesitate to call it an upgrade in every way. The camera has a lower mega pixel, but it takes better pictures, especially in low light conditions. The battery life is better in the overall, but that may be related to better signal strength. Nicer display on the Nexus and it's definitely snappier. Verizon LTE is leaps and bounds beyond Sprint's 3G coverage. I would definitely give the Nexus a shot.

How much snappier can it be from the EVO. This Evo is pretty bad azz when it comes to performance and picture quality.
I would love to see the difference in photo quality & performance!
HTC Evo 4G has a lens aperture of 2.2.
I wonder what the Galaxy Nexus has?
They both run 1.2 dual-core processors with 1gb of ram?

something about the camera since you asked how it compared to the iphone 4/s camera.
at dave n busters i could take pictures with the flash off and they were fine, and with the flash they weren't washed out or blurry.
the iphone needed the flash otherwise it was all dark, and almost all the photos were blurry or washed in flash.
and then that fast shutter speed on the nexus, i can snap a quick shot faster than the iphone (multiple shots in a row, and a few other things are when this is most useful)
I used an iPhone 4 before I moved to a Gnex. And, I still kind of prefer the image quality from my iPhone 4.
To me, it just seems as though the Gnex isn't quite able to capture all of the detail; its just slightly a bit more blurry. This is when you zoom in in your picture (i.e. after I've taken the picture).
The camera lens was changed with the iPhone 4S so I would think there's an improvement even over the iPhone 4.
That said, the picture quality from a Gnex isn't terrible but it could be a lot better. Hopefully, it's something that's changed with the next gen.

Thanks for the replies! The reason I asked compared to the iPhones is because in fact I came from the iPhone family and know the quality of both the iPhone 4 and 4S. My girl currently owns the 4S. I have done the comparison between my current phone HTC EVO 4G LTE. There is no dought that the EVO 4G LTE takes the leap over the iPhone's.
I wanted the input of the Galaxy Nexus 4G cause I don't know how it stacked up next to the iPhones. I had a feeling one of you was going to say that the details on the iPhone 4 pictures is just peppier more then the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE .
And knowing this makes me assure that it will not be as crispy as the iPhone 4S.
But yea thanks for the input on the camera of the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE.
If the question is specifically about comparing cameras, the 4S has a better camera than my GNex, but my GNex takes pretty good pics. It may not be stellar but it's good enough for my purposes.

If the question is specifically about comparing cameras, the 4S has a better camera than my GNex, but my GNex takes pretty good pics. It may not be stellar but it's good enough for my purposes.

Cool, Thanks! The moral of my question is how does the Galaxy Nexus 4G LTE stacks up to the Evo 4G LTE in general? Would it be worth to "downgrade" sorta say?

Nexus OR Razr M?

Guys I'm coming from the OG Dinc and I have LOVED the phone. It just won't quit and its still supported by devs to this day running Jellybean. But the time has come to retire the Dinc and now I'm torn. I've been looking at the Nexus and the Razr M, both of which I can get for $50 upgrading via Amazon. I love flashing ROMs so I can have the latest and greatest so that's a little important but not imperative. What I want to know is, are the signal issues as widespread and horrible as some say or has it been fixed with 4.1. This is a BIG concern for me. Also how is the battery life? I don't mind charging my phone once daily (I'm charging my dinc twice a day now) or here and there but I've seen most people saying 4hrs screen on time with stock battery and I'd probably put the 2100 mAh batt in immediately. Is that a fair representation? All the Verizon reps act like I'm a lunatic for wanting a nexus over a razr maxx or sIII but I can't tell if their just trying to upsell me or not. Any help here would be VERY much appreciated. I'm just afraid that the Razr M will be locked down forever (not buying dev edition) and I'm also not a huge fan of the qHD display. :good::good::good:
Edit: As far as 4G, I probably wouldn't use it unless I wanted to watch a youtube video so I'd most likely leave it off during the day and use Wifi at home.
If you want to flash don't go with the razr. And done expect any updates for the razr either.

Signal now is ok... battery is the same... but materials... RAZR is better! (Very muchhhhhhhh)
It's the nexus forum and you're posting "Nexus or this phone" you're going to get biased post that says Nexus. If you went to the RAZR M section, people would say get the RAZR M.
I understand but sometimes you're hoping for an unbiased opinion. Just trying to get a feel for the signal problems mostly. Battery isn't a HUGH issue for me.
Either way, I went for the Nexus so fingers crossed that signal won't be a problem. I just couldn't bring myself to buy a locked down phone. Got the M for my wife.
I have a Nexus. Battery life is average, but since in the nexus it can be removed, you can replace that by buying an increased one (2000 mA, and has the same dimensions as the original)

The chances of getting a unbiased post is pretty close to slim. Rather than asking "phone A or phone B" maybe you should express general questions rather than asking users to make the decision for you and do the same on phone B's forum and determine what's the best phone for you.
Just being honest with you as I do see many threads similar to this one.
Battery life for me has been great (using Galaxy Nexus GSM). Cm10 + Franco Kernel + Extended 2000 mAh battery [genuine] from shimshop on ebay.
Performance = Razr M
Screen = Galaxy Nexus
Build Quality = Razr M
Always have the latest Android version = Galaxy Nexus
Battery = Razr M
4.1.2 came out yesterday nexus has it that's the main advantage everything else is just about the except battery life RAZR is much better my friend pulls 16hrs

RAZR M isn't even worth it.
1) RAZR M launches with 4.0.4 (ICS). Motorola isn't very good when it comes to updating their devices, 4.2 is around the corner. By the time RAZR M gets JB (or maybe Motorola will say, its coming and it doesn't and then ends up being canceled), we'll have 4.2.
2) Battery on RAZR M is 2000 mAh, GSM Galaxy Nexus can get 2000 mAh by getting a extended battery (genuine with NFC ~$34)
3) Higher pixel density on Galaxy Nexus
4) Bigger screen on Galaxy Nexus

Sure camera is better on RAZR M but in the end Galaxy Nexus still beats RAZR M overall just because of firmware updates.
Either that or wait for the next announcement of the Nexus (which you should do anyways) so in this case I would choose neither. Just wait for the Nexus announcement and proceed from there.
Razr Maxx is my work phone and if the Razr M has battery life better or equal to that, then you can run it without a charge for a very long time. Nexus is miles smoother though and it's easy to swap batteries, so I would still side to the Nexus. Going back and forth between the Nexus and One X running ViperX ROM and lately been straying to the One X more often as my daily phone.

M has the same battery as the regular RAZR and not the Maxx. Honestly the biggest thing the M has going for it in my opinion is the size, that intrigues me. But I'm not willing to give up Dev support and the ability to basically whatever I want with it.
Motorola is not the way to go. Avoid at all costs. I previously owned the Atrix and disliked having to wait so long for an upgrade, for a device that isn't that old and has decent specs. Besides, the motto is "Nexus Is A Developers Device". Guaranteed great development.

Thanks guys. The fact that the M is locked down pushed me to the nexus. Got the M for my wife who could care less about ROMs and rooting. Still worried about the non-removable battery on the M as she has had 2 batteries fail on her in her Incredible. Not really intrigued by the new nexus much at this point as its not a huge jump from the current one IMO. And for $50 you can't beat that. I appreciate all the opinions. Looking forward to moving over to the nexus forums from the Dinc.:good:
