Are you "The Android Guy" in your office? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

So I've sort of become the go-to android guy in my place of work, it started when I helped a colleague flash ICS on his GS2. Then other people heard about it and started coming to me for apps, ROMs, advice, etc.. So far I've upgraded 2 GS2s to ICS, a Galaxy Note, rooted a few phones and configured most the exchange clients. It's not my job by any means (even though I work in IT) but I'm always happy to lend a hand and help grow the community I've even turned a few people away from the dark side *cough*Apple*cough* and convinced them to go with Android.
So are you the android guy in your office/school/uni?

I can very much relate to this.

Forgot to add being the android guy at home as well.. Flashed CM7.1 a while back on my gf's SGS, now upgraded to CM9. Upgraded my dad's SGS to stock 2.3.6 (don't want him harassing me with nightly bugs)

I don't usually do stuff on peoples phones because I've found that as soon as I do it I automatically become their tech support for the remainder of the time they have the phone and someone to blame if it starts acting up.

This. People praise you when they can use wireless tether and other fun things, but as soon as anything goes wrong you get the blame. And you're stuck on the hook for tech support since they never bothered to learn it in the first place.
I still help friends out on occasion, but always on their computer and they always do the work. I just sit there and hold their hand. That way they'll already have the tools (adb, fastboot, ODIN, etc) and at least will have been through the procedure once so they have a loose idea of what's going on. And I avoid "one-click" and "toolkit" methods at all costs. Sure, they usually work, but you don't learn anything from it.

Same here, I'm choosy on who I root.

I go to highschool and Im known as the Android Nazi. Ill help people with phones and give then advice on which phones to buy or not buy.
When I root peoples phones and stuff Ill make them do it. I tell them exactly what to do so if something gets screwed up then I can be all like "You did it not me". Although its been smooth sailing.
They all know I hate apple with the burning passion of 1000 suns. Needless to say they all stay away from me.

lol.. yup.. the cio use to come to me for android assistance

Same here
i'm always help people with there phone in Highschool & twiter, people love me & i'm being famous in the School, They Call me mr.samsung "BTW i h8 samsung now lol" i switch to HTC because samsung never respect us in Middle East.
i like to help people & make their Phones better Such as Rooting, installing Roms & Theme...etc
Also i help them with their Bad iDevices Lol
When you help the people, they will love you & you will make them feel happy

the only office I use is my sh!tter

Same but at uni and with friends etc. They always ask me if they upgrade there phone and stuff. Fixed a few iphones as well.

I'm not that deep into it. I am the go to guy just for how Android works, I'm not sexist, this is just my personal experience, but I work with 90% women and the women on my team always come to me, just to figure out how to use their phone, forget rooting them, they just can't figure out how to silence the damn thing.

hahaha ! nice post! so i'm the "tech support" in my office too
1 restored a mediacom tablet bricked!
2 used odin for a galaxy s with google server connection problem (new rom solve all)
3 sold my old galaxy S to a collegue and setup up the phone for him (cyanogen :-D )
4 jailbreak of 1 iphone, 1 ipad, 1 ipod
5 update 2 nokia E51 / E5 to new firmware
and more

A nice, positive conversation. How did we get started with this addiction?

Hey guys.
So I read on these threads a lot. I notice sometimes that people get really anxious and testy (almost down right nasty). So I thought I would make a nice thread =)
Some of yall have helped me out tremendously. I started my obsession with customizing and flashing my old tmobile motorola cliq which now reminds me of a tiny MP3 player. Half of me was fascinated that I could customize my phone to my liking and the other half was fascinated with the super talented people who made it possible to update my phone even after official updates stopped forever. I was able to turn a crappy phone into something useful and it made me feel like I didn't have a wasted device. I still use it to play music through wifi and save my actual phone.
I am curious to read how some of you fell into this "addiction" and what your friends and family say. All I really wanted to do was change my boot animation at first LOL. My family can't believe that I do all this stuff to my phone and sit on these threads for about 30% of my day LOL. Thanks to yall teaching me how to do stuff, it looks like a gay fairy pooped a phone out for me with all the pinks, purples, and cyans I was able to add to it and it works better than my husbands which obviously gives me an evil grin.
So thanks to all of yall. We are all testers in my opinion. Without the developers and us who adore them, I bet these device companies would just be about half way to where they are now.
So how did yall fall into this?
It started after I purchased my first ever Android phone, the HTC EVO 4G, from Sprint.com the day after it came out. I didn't start to even explore rooting until after 2.2 update came out. I had always heard about rooting but wasn't really sure what it did for me or the phone. So I ventured onto XDA and got started! Rooting was a lot more manual than it is now. I remember watching 2 separate videos and it took over a half hour to complete. I guess I lucked out on my first Android phone being the EVO, one of the most developed phones ever on XDA.
The amount of knowledge I've learned from XDA about phones/carriers/android is tremendous. I thank you all
My mod addiction took off in 2007 thanks to Palm Treo 700wx.
The lack of Led blink nonfiction for missed calls , messages , repeating reminder etc drove me nuts so I wrote mods using mort script allowing led notification , reminders etc.
The green horn days lol
http://forums.webosnation.com/windows-mobile-software/139440-led-alert-reminder-alert-one.html
From there I built mod to disable treo keyboard backlight and became hooked on changing how device served me then went mod flash happy on every device Ive ever owned

My love for Xda ...
First phone I hacked was the moto razr, I changed the outside LCD picture when the phone was opened. I used to theme sidekicks and blackberrys after that, even flashed "barebones" firmware in my blackberries from pinstack. Since I was a kid I used to take things apart and make my own mods, ax my mama. She's still not happy what I did with my boom box in the 80's.

HAHAHAHAHAHA
I have always been a techy girl. I grew up with my dad and I loved to take apart electronics. I remember one time, I thought I could recharge a AA battery if I took an old power cord, split the middle, stripped the ends, plug it in, and just touch the ends of the batteries with the wires. The light blinded me for 3 days and I was very lucky to have not gotten burned or worse.
Now I stick to my phone LOL. I don't know what it is. It is just so cool to make it do what I want. It is like I get to give the company the middle finger and say HA...now its the way I want it. ROFL

Cool thread. I first heard of rooting from the reviews i read for the evo4g before i bought the phone. My curious nature got me to look up rooting which then pointed me to xda. after reading over and over the instructions to root so i wouldn't f#ck up my phone I became fascinated with customizations and all the different options that lay before me. Never heard of roms, kernels, aosp, recoveries before this. Not gonna lie, this made me feel smarter Now I'm a flashaholic. The only annoying thing is now my friends and family always ask me to try to fix their phones when it messes up
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Mine started because I had an originial Epic 4G and wanted to get rid of CIQ when I 1st saw k0nane speaking of it in a thread on ACS's SyndicateROM Frozen. So I decided to root so I could install that ROM which had no CIQ. Never looked back after that.
Started out when I got my HTC Hero, it was really slow and laggy. Rooted it, Then installed CM7 when it came out. I barely got the Epic Touch 2 months ago, but I could've lived with the hero for a longer time lol.
[Insert witty signature here]
All my modding and hacking started way back in the late 80's with my first PC and Linux was born. Thus bringing us Android. Then the ps1 and dreamcast then ps2/Xbox. Now ps3 my laptop and naturally my phones. I have modded all my tech and always will.
definitely started with my Hero. loved it but it really slowed down after the 2.0 update. So I did some reading, watching some youtube, and lost my virginity to the fresh rom. been rooted ever since
rooted my OG epic day 1
rooted this phone day 1
ROOT THE PLANET!!!!
/\/\/\/\... do you think this is how iPhone users see us?
For me it all started back with my old Samsung Blackjack and installing an unofficial update from WinMo 5.0 to 6. Then I went to flashing new ROMs nearly every day on my HTC Touch Pro and TP2. Naturally when I went Android with the Evo this obsession continued.

Totally.....my friends with iPhones constantly taunt me for messing with my phone and they get green with envy when I share with them my icons, custom colors, and so on and so forth. Not to mention that this phone is just BETTER in general. They call it the "VCR" in my purse LOL.
Is this thread dead already?
I started here http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=12&c=casio_cassiopeia_e-125 way before android ever existed. I had a compact flash card modem that hooked up to my telephone line and i was surfing the net through my dialup aol connection. I was sending faxes and receiving them form my ppc back in 2000.
It started for me with the HTC HD2 I was so excited when I got it cause of the huge screen then I turned it on and windows mobile sucks so I did a search in google and found XDA which has pretty much showed me everything
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
For me... it all started with the original xbox. A friend offered to mod it for me and I agreed. When I saw what he did I started looking into more I could mod. My motorola razor... my PSP.... my wii... It started out with cosmetic modifications. Like a DVD window for my Xbox and Xbox 360. Or painting 'link' on the side of my wii. I slowly moved into phones... when I got my iphone 3g. When I dropped that I picked up the Samsung moment and started hacking away. Ive learned a ton... from how android works to how Linux works. Its my biggest hobby.
Started on the HTC HD2.....flashed wm roms and themes there, then got the dual boot thing going. Running wm and android simultaneously, pretty cool.
Then moved to the HTC mytouch 3g, then on to Samsung Galaxy I vibrant for a year, flash the **** out of that. Now here.

Wives with Androids, the Screens

As a long time Androyer myself, I'm happy to announce my wife has come over to this side of freedom from her idevice.
Having 2 Nexi together is very fun, NFCing, sharing ideas, flashing etc. I got my wife her Nexus one week after I got mine, she saw the beauty of the device, and was curious about it. Her first week was very difficult in trying to customize and get used to the system, especially after coming from simple-apple. But with a little guidance and help she saw what Android was capable of doing and customized her own screens.
I'm curious to know if your significant other also has the SGN and how has the transition been? Is his/her screens customized? Did they come from another OS?
Here is my wife's screens, I told her I was proud of her and that I would share it with you guys... she said criticism welcomed!!!! Thank guys, maybe this could be a thread for chicks to get together and share chick stuff? IDK...
Love you Cheekys!
(Mod feel free to re-direct thread if put in wrong section)

I think the screens are looking good. I, myself also focus on the wallpaper. That being said, on the 4th screen, that folder is kinda blocking the bug!
My wife went from a iPhone 3GS to a Droid X (rough) then to a Droid Incredible and I bought us both Galaxy Nexus on release date. The ONLY issue she's had is that MoonReader Pro suddenly took over for her Messaging Icon ... and even her SMS widget opened MoonReaderPro ... had to uninstall and reinstall MoonReader to get them both to work. HOW she did this .. I do not know. But for the most part she LOVES the phone and doesn't much care for iOS. And we both use MacbookPro's as our laptop of choice.

My wife had been using a mytouch 4g until I switched her over to a HTC Sensation. I upgraded to the galaxy nexus from the nexus s, and a few days later, my nexus s was missing. She swiped it and is not using it as her primary device.

How do you show it off?

Most of us have had that encounter, usually with someone holding an iPhone. They say their phone is better but of course we know it's not.
So how do you show off your phone? What is it that you do to wow people and make the hipsters cry?
My wife owned an iPhone at one point. It pretty much did the work for me by pissing her off and losing her music from her CD's she put on it after syncing with iTunes. I showed her Google Music, the cloud, the ways I could customize it, and how my maps and navigation worked flawlessly as a native app - unlike her iPhone.
I just use the iphone launcher whenever i see them using their iphone and say hey look i have an iphone too. Then i go to the yahoo and play a flash video. Then i tell them that my iphone is better then their.
After that i get their iphone and smash it on the ground

I show them how rich my screen is compared to theirs, and then I start tethering to a wifi device.

Nothing. I just give them my device and tell them to have a look. Most people just like to look at the widgets.
I just pull it out my pocket, unlock the screen and let the live wallpapers + customizations do the talking. Once they all into my phone saying I wish my phone could do live wallpapers I start doing other things they can't with their iPhone. I used the dlna feature on a family members tv and she was showing it off to her man (both have iPhones) and then hooked it up by mhl to mirror the whole phone to really impress. Few days later her man came home with my phone the att variant n gave her his 4s. She really wanted this phone and went as far as saying I should've never showed him lol

If your on a custom rom that's is able to use theme Chooser like paranoid android then just switch themes endlessly with out a reboot and stuff. Use screencast to record your screen. If they smoke weed like me use roll a joint, that's an app iPhone will never see lol. Adjust your dpi using rom toolbox. All that iPhone users have that I want and continue to hate on is their library of games they got almost all the good ones, rage, CALL OF DUTY ZOMBIES! Need I say more I hate them for the games! If we get those games also android will be the shiit lol

It's just a phone, who cares. I didn't buy this phone to upstage iPhone fans, and I didn't buy it because I have a dislike of Apple products. I bought it because it is the best device for me. If someone asks me about it, I'll tell them what they want to know and why I like it better. 99% of my friends have some variation of the iPhone, and they are very happy with it. In fact, 2 of them still bought the iPhone after playing with my phone. And no amount of widgets or live wallpapers, or face unlock, or whatever else Android has that iOS doesn't will change their outlook. If you want to know why, the answer is simple: not a single android device manufacturer puts out a product that is as polished as the iPhone, and even android 4.0 is not as polished as iOS. That's why my phone is not winning any converts, despite the fact that's it can do much more. I'm no iPhone fan, but that's the truth.

Polished I think not!!! You got one because "99% of my friend has some variations of the iphone" ??? Wtf and you have been the 1% that has a better phone just drop the same amount of cash as you would for an iPhone and get a High-end android phone and get the real android experience when root that High-end Android phone! They are late to everything dual core, 4g(some) and real multitasking features not to mention a home button, menu, and ITS OWN BACK BUTTON!!! Need I say more lol:beer:

Perhaps you should lay off the weed, because it is clearly clouding your judgement and reading comprehension skills. I have the E4GT and had the Evo 4G before that. Nowhere in my post did I state or imply that I have an iphone. I never had an iPhone and don't want an iPhone. Why do you think I'm in this forum? My post was making the point that the vast majority of people with iphones love their device, and 2 of my friends who played with my E4GT still went with the iphone. And my phone is rooted with a custom kernel, so it actually performs better than the E4GT out of the box. As to my belief regarding why, you can re-read my post. And yes, every time I use an iPhone or iPad, I am always impressed by the smoothness of the UI and the speed of the device, so it is in fact more polished. I also have the quad-core Asus Transformer Prime, which I wish I never bought as it is an underperforming, buggy piece of crap, and you can read all about it in it's section on this board. Want to know why people dump Android for iOS, go out and buy the Prime, try to use it, and you'll have your answer in 5 mins. And I don't blame Android, I blame lazy manufacturers who slap an unoptimized kernel and OS onto cutting edge hardware, fill it with bloat, and then release the product without apparently doing something as simple as trying to access the internet with it, just to do a basic quality control. If I sound angry, it's because I am. With Android, it always seems to be a crap shoot. You can get lucky and stumble on a good device such as the E4GT, or you can spend money on the most bleeding-edge device, and be left with a device that has trouble displaying a powerpoint presentation. Now put yourself in my position; do you really think that I would be more unhappy with the iPad than I am with the Prime? If the iPad at the very least works without the browser crashing randomly and often, then the iPad is already better. Yes, IMO the E4GT is better than an iPhone, but the iPad is much better than the Prime, and it has half the hardware. Don't be a fanboy.
Agreed. Brand loyalty only hinders progress. User experience is a subjective thing, there is no definitely better answer. I know plenty of people who've "converted" to and from both "sides".

Do you think AT&T will do the same as S2?

I am due for an upgrade but think I am going to wait to see if AT&T does the same thing with the S3 that they did with the S2. Do you think they will release an updated version like the skyrocket was but for the S3?
Just thought I would get some opinions.
I don't see why not, if you wait long enough you might as well wait for the S4. It will be at least 6-7 months before you see another version of this phone if not longer.
There is an enterprise version coming in July with no hardware changes.

I don't think they would release another version, otherwise if you wait till october Iam sure the new Nexus will be out.

New phones come out weekly seems like, so yes there will always something new coming ... but as fast as gs2 and skyrocket I doubt it ... Samsung seems to be pushing this phone alot harder than those others if u think about it, releasing all us models on basically the same day, not changing the look from international version, a red one coming to at&t .... I think next new thing will be another Google built phone with jelly bean on it within 3 months ...and new iPhone within same time frame .. but Samsung going to collect some serious money on this one before release new one
my opinion...
Of course new phones come out every few weeks and the new nexus should be out in the fourth quarter, will it come to AT&T would be the next question. But to stay on topic, I wanted to know if only a month would be between the release, but they have done a much better job releasing it this time, not the 6 month difference like the S2. So it seems that Samsung will keep this as the highest-end for awhile.
So at least it will be a little more than a month before the phone is outdated.
Highly doubt that att will carry the new nexus at its launch.

The only reason the skyrocket was released was because of the new LTE network, they needed more phones to support it, so no, I doubt there is going to be a skyrocket S3.
The Note 2 may be the next big Samsung phone on AT&T.
I never considered a skyrocket a upgrade other than the fact it was lte. I liked my s2 more than my rocket. I'm in love wit my s3 tho

This is the first smartphone to do what crApple did with the iPhone...
Release the same version, same design, same name, on all carriers.
And...this is the first time it has happened on all 4 carriers at relatively the same time (thanks Verizon).
This is a historic moment for Android and Samsung - and the beginning of a new chapter for both companies.
[WayOffTopicRant]Dare I say another step towards the end of Apple (I hate that company!). I know that is a LONG way off, but I want so badly to see them go. Such a bad company in general, so anti-American, and a hipocritical message. I would swear that Steve Jobs made a deal with the devil if I believed in that sort of thing.[/WayOffTopicRant]
But does everyone think samsung will continue to make the flagship android phone now that google owns Motorola Mobility? Why acquire a fair sized mobile phone maker and not use it. Unless of course the move was just one more step in the no way beneficial to the end user patent war between google and apple.

The Skyrocket wasn't really an updated version. It was just another version of it with LTE. It had a larger screen (not always a good thing) and a worse processor.
So in other words....no. This phone is running on AT&T's LTE network, and LTE was why they released the Skyrocket.
I think you hit the nail on the head in thinking that it was for patents. Especially since a judge just dismissed some of Apples claims over Motorola. Google will now have a platform to work on phone OS and HW now.
Personally, I feel Motorola always made the ugliest of the phones, but if the flagship for them someday becomes the Nexus manufacturer and everyone else does their own things like Galaxy S series and HTC One series it will be good.
We shall see, but from what it looks like to me is Android is here to stay, Samsung and others will continue to support it as long as we buy it, and Moto will be Google's chance to bring out stock only phones in the future.
Skyrocket was announced a week after I got my sgs2. I opted to stay with it. Skyrocket was one of the first lte phones. There is nothing that can be added to the sgs3 that it doesn't already have. Except maybe the 32gig version.
Note 2 will be out in October.

There's a lot of apple haters out there and after ggetting this amazing s3, I have to say I know why. But at the end of the day apple's products are by no way bad, and they are an American company while Samsung is Korean and I want to root for my own country.

Apple makes products in China. Apple the company is rooted in America but it has given nothing back to the US. No charitable donations, no give back programs, no student help, etc.
Samsung Telecommunications of America is a US based company too. They have numerous charities they give to. Sponsor many US based programs and like Microsoft give back a huge portion to the US citizens in donations.
If you want to root for the US buy Samsung. I know it sounds funny but Samsung Electronics of America is a US company. STA is a US company. Only the parent company is Korean.
I will always support the US company that gives back when it can. I am all for making a profit, but what a company does with that profit is what truly matters. Apple swallows it, Samsung gives it back.

HTC Droid Incredible 2 Ice Cream Sandwich – It Seems It’s Still In The Works (Android

Hmm? Posted 2 days ago
http://www.gforgames.com/gadgets/ht...ice-cream-sandwich-works-android-4-ics-28378/
The story behind the HTC Droid Incredible 2 and its Ice Cream Sandwich update that never came is quite long and full of pushbacks and angry letters. In case you’ve followed us during the past few months, you should already be aware of how things unfolded thus far. In a nutshell, the Incredible 2 was supposed to receive the Android 4.0 update, alongside the HTC Thunderbolt, by the end of August. That obviously didn’t happen and the roll-out has been pushed back indefinitely.
Better Link (Not sure how I missed this on the DL)
http://www.droid-life.com/2012/11/2...ible-2-owners-waiting-for-ice-cream-sandwich/
So you could say our ice cream is still being "churned"? Or is it still being agitated?
I like how the article says they are having connectivity problems with the update. Don't they read this forum? We had the same issue with the leak...but all of the other ROMS work. Why can't they figure out what the Devs did here and incorporate it...?
I do hate to be a Negative-Nancy, but I call B.S.
It's like the cheating BF/GF. Lies don't stop. It is a habit of misleading. Key word is habit.
This subject is a very sore one for me. I think ALL Android should be open source. I thought that was the point, and what made Android better than the rest.
What it comes down to is, I will believe it when I see it.
Though this did rile me up again enough that I will be writing to HTC again. Probably at least, but not only on their Facebook page.
As always, I encourage you to do the same. Squeeky wheel gets the grease, y'know.
I do think it's worth it to prod HTC - not in a malicious way, but nicely so they know we're waiting.
I also think it's worth waiting for them to finish the job.

Nice? Really? Nice should have been out the window the moment they passed their already ridiculously late deadline. ICS came out over a year ago and those clowns are still "working on it"? HTC clearly doesn't care about their customers so I don't see how politely asking them to do something is going to amount to anything I am glad they're experiencing record losses I'll never buy another one of their products. It's easier to pass the buck than it is to actually care about your customers and put in some work this update will never be released because neither party really cares.
ICS
I think that as soon as the "connectivity issues" (WiFi Tether Lockdown) are finally coded in we will see ICS for the DInc II.
That's what we got with the Spectrum.
It's more for the grandfathered unlimited customers, motivation to switch to the "Gimi What You Got", VomitRizen shakedown.
Ever since the "Paid Off" FCC allowed these cheeswads to fleece the public with tiered data plans they are chocking us on it...
It is probably a better deal for those who yak for hours and text up the **s.
But for me, the $60.00 a month increase for my 5 family members to have emergency communication, is just plain cruel.
As much as it hurts, I will have to kick out the lines one at a time.
Thanks Big Reda.
"We don't have any timing specifics right now, Chris. We'll let you know once we learn more!", was the response I got from an inquiry on their FB page.
Same thing they've been saying since the end of August.
And if phone companies (HTC, Samsung, lg, etc) would stop releasing a new phone every 3 months when most people are on 2 year contracts and update the phones that people still use we wouldn't be hear. The galaxy note 2 is already out and it feels like the note 1 JUST came out. That's a bit ridiculous in my opinion lol. My friend had his og droid only 2 years ago..and think of all the android phones since then.

That's how profit is made tho. Releasing a newer phone to get people to jump to the latest and greatest so that's why they tue them down to a 2 year because slot of people just wanna be on the greatest I know a lot switching from the s3 to dna or note 2 its all based on making money

Sounds good in theory to only release a new phone every 2 years but not everyone's contracts begin and end at the same time. Also like the post above me mentioned some people are willing to shell out for the latest and greatest, and others might just have monthly plans.
ETF and grandfathered unlimited is enough for me to stick with my phone for a while though

apple manages to do it. they might not wait 2 years for every phone but they literally only have the One line of phones and keep them all updated, and still make a ton of money. >.> albeit i'm not an apple fan at all. just stating the obvious here.
This is why I'm not going for an HTC phone ever again. This is obviously a publicity stunt pulled off only by HTC.

Waiting for an official ICS (and JB) upgrade is even more necessary in India. We are all using grey imports. Furthermore, for AlphaRevX or Revolutionary based roots (as most of us have), going back to Froyo and unrooting before doing a bootloader unlock, and then climbing back up to the CMs is not at all attractive.
