[Q] Car charger USB Adapter weirdness? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

On my primary car I use a USB adapter to charge the phone. Prior to the SG2 I had a HD2 which (I think) charged fine.
If the phone has a zero charge I plug it in and it will automatically boot and the charge indicator shows charging but the battery indicator does not move for a while. Charging when using the phone never seems to keep up with the charge. After about 5 minutes the top indicator (when phone is on) starts to move and the phone will charge - although it seems pretty slowly.
The weirdness - when I plug in the USB cable to a laptop when its off the battery indicator lights up on the screen (pictagram) showing the phone is charging but it doesn't boot which is correct. What is weird is below:
In the car when you attempt to turn it off the phone with the long power button press and select the right options the phone will close down - you get the TMobile logo then the screen blanks out - then IT REBOOTS on its own!
Could under voltage be doing this? or is the cig port doing something odd with the voltage or amps? Know the USB port works and charges because I can charge it off a laptop, wall charger, computer etc and it works as it should. Its not the cable because I tried it on the computers.
Also tried a different usb/cig adapter - actually three and get the same results. Car only has 1 cig port.
Anyone have an idea?

Problem of recharging TP2

Hi.
i got a unbranded Touch Pro2 in france. the battery stand 2 days before the first recharge. but seems i got a problem of recharging.
i decide to recharge it when the phone is ON, but seems it consumes more than recharge speed. there are less and less electric in the battery, even the screen is Off, and no applications running, and all connections are disabled (WIFI, Bluetooth, Data Connection) except Phone
so i have to take the phone completely OFF, with a cable USB connected to the computer, now it is more than 6 hours, but the recharing light is always "Orange".
this is my 3rd HTC phone, and i never met this problem before. as the first recharge of TP2, is it normal to me?
thanks in advance of your help

Thanks, nearly 6.5 hours with usb cable. the light turns green, so i can start it now.
but i still not understand why it consumes more quickly than recharge. i will see if it happens only in first charge.
I saw somthing somehwhere about turning on quick charge or full charge via activesync usb, dont know what its about but its worth investegating if this is a problem for you.
I have another charging or connection problem, with all my other htc phones (5) i could use any regular usb cabel, with the pro 2 they all seem to have poor connection, have to hold the cabel in a sertan angel for it to work. The supplied cabel and the org cabel for my pro 1 works fine though. Anybody else having this issue?

same here - but applies to all my htc phone. they can not connect stability with the mini-usb of my SLR camera. in fact, there are a little different with HTC ext-usb and mini USB -- the port is a Right-angle trapezoidal, while the standard mini-usb is Symmetric trapezoidal. so that's why we should use the ext-usb cable.
same here with the usb cable ...well is not the usb cables problem but the usb plug in the phone .
concerning charging from a pc laptop.....
if i leave my phone overnight charging from the laptop and the laptop goes into standby ,even if the battery is 100% it gets totally discharged with in hours!!!! this while plugged into the laptop!!!
what a hell is this , i mean, m i charging the laptop from the pda or what!?
this is a serious bug that htc needs addressing.
please note that there is laptops that do not power down usb ports while in standby, i got one that does just that.
now my eee-pc1000h doe power down the usbs ports when going into standby.

Well i know that but that is becous they also have the headset on the same port. As far as i know you should be able to use a normal usb cabel with the device.
USB ports on a computer can only supply 500Mah of current. it seems really odd that the phone would be discharging at such a rate to deplete itself even with that current available. that would seem to indicate the 1500Mah battery in the Tp2 would only last 2, maybe 3 hours before dying if left unplugged.
when connected through a Wall outlet the phone should be being charged at 1000Mah. although the maximum safe charge rate of the battery is 1.5Amps (1500Mah.)

I have noticed that my TP2 can complain with a popup warning that there is insufficient power to charge when connected to my Dell laptop. I think it just stops charging at this point. After that it is downhill all the way!
I agree that there is something strange going on with the TP2 recharging from a USB port. I got my TP2 as a replacement for my HTC Universal. I am using the TP2 on the same port with the same cable. The Universal was very straightforward - plug it in and it charged regardless of whether it or the PC was on or off. The TP2 is very different - leave this connected to a powered off PC overnight and I routinely find that the TP2 has reached critical battery low the next morning. This means that not only does it seem not to have been charging, but it must have been "on" overnight (where the power management settings should have turned it off) in order to deplete the battery to this extent, regardless of whether it was charging or not. The battery charging light (amber to the left of the ear speaker) is on throughout.
The power management information is also odd. This AM it reports last full charge at 23:12 last night and since last full charge a standby time of 6h39m, talk time of 0 and device usage of 2h55m. However, it wasnt used at all after about 20:00 last night and power management should have turned it off after 30 mins.
It charges normally from the USB port when the PC is on.
Any ideas?
This problem happens with standard USB cables and the official HTC cable. You must have an active ActiveSync connection or the phone won't charge.
Last night I plugged my phone in while my computer was still booting. The charging light came on, but this morning I was left with 10% battery.
If you plug it into a computer without ActiveSync installed the phone won't charge.
If you plug it in and the ActiveSync icon turns green the phone is happy and will charge.
If you turn off the phone and plug it in to just about any USB power source, the phone doesen't know better, and it will charge.
I got the power error in my car last weekend. Running with the splitter, with 3.5mm into car sterio and car charger plugged in. Was running slide2play and the pop up showed up. Come to find out, later on the charging light wasnt on the phone anymore. Tried the wifes tilt 2 and it wouldnt charger hers either. The car charger died.
BUT, at the time the error came up, the charging light was up and running.

Total nonsense, I plug my phone into my computer here at home to top it off on the weekend and it does not have ActiveStink on it.
Problem with TP2 and Mini USB sync/charge cable
I have an unbranded GSM TP2. It charges normally using the HTC wall charger and the HTC supplied ExtUSB cable.
I have read that Mini USB cables should be compatible with the HTC ExtUSB port for normal operations like charge and sync so I bought a generic Mini USB sync/charge cable on e-Bay. The supplier stated it was compatible with TP2, but when I plug it in to USB port, the device charging light comes on for 1 sec then goes off and the PC shows a message saying "a USB device has malfunctioned".
The supplier sent me a replacement cable but it has exactly the same problem so I don't think the cable is faulty. I think maybe the problem is with my device.
Does anyone out there have more detailed knowledge of the compatibility of Mini USB and ExtUSB?

No, I am just using ActiveSync to sync my data and charging via USB whilst connected.
As I said, it works perfectly with the standard HTC ExtUSB cable but fails to connect properly when I try to use the Mini USB cable.

I think the odds are you just got a bum USB cable...the failure rate among the generic ones on e-bay is considerably higher as a rule. Do you or any of your friends have any other mini-USB equipped devices you can test it with?

That was my first thought but I have now tried three different cables, from two different e-bay sources, with the same effect. However, I haven't yet tried any of them with any other device - I'll try that at the weekend and see what happens.

not charging via usb?

so the option to not charge it is not ticked under power settings, and its set to charge via usb from advanced config and still no dice.
tried different usb ports and nothing
the led is orange, says its charging in power options
any thoughts?
Try a diffrent usb cable, some cables do not provide enough power to charge the phone. (guessing maybe they are old 1.1 cabels). But I know I have a few cables around that dont charge my phone and they also will not work with my portable external usb hard drive because they wont provide enough power for it. But they work just fine with my digital camera.
I´ve read somewhere that disabling USB charging is better for the battery life, so I have it disabled.
You've tried different USB ports, but were they on the different computers?
so i've tried different cables, different ports and 2 different PC's and 2 different laptops.
I know its not the cable i'm currently using because i plugged it into one of those A/C to USB adapters and charged fine.
I'm starting to think its my batter,
If you have tbattery installed, do u get values for all the boxes?
All mine except 3 or 4 are 0 :/
Well, you are not the only one having this problem. Mine is brand new. I started setting it up last night and had it hooked to the computer via usb. I installed a few .cabs such as google maps, myphone, and a few tweaks such as tether, disable sent notification, enable all camera modes, and manila start menu unlocker. While it was connected it said it was charging. When I went to bed I turned it off and connected it to another usb cable on another computer which is an a/c hub. I went to turn it on this morning and thought it was strange it was not fully charged. I continued to set it up a bit and take it for a spin. After a while I turned it off again and hooked it to the usb a/c charger again. I just tried turning it on and nothing was happening. I connected it to the usb again and it finally turned on, but I checked the battery level and it was at 0% and turned off. I have it connected to the a/c charger and giving it a little bit to see what will happen. One thing that seems strange is that the battery discharged more while it was off and attached to the usb a/c hub during the afternoon causing it to refuse to turn on at all. Any thoughts?

I think the odds are pretty good it's your battery. The orange light means power is going through the charging circuit, so you obviously have your settings correct.
I'm guessing you're in Austin or near? If you want to try popping my battery in it for a few minutes and see if it charges fine then, PM me and we can set something up.
the same thing is happening with mine. Sometimes it will charge, sometimes it wont. weird thing is that it only started doing this a few days ago... i know nothing has changed ROM wise, so only things i can think now is maybe the actual USB connector on the phone or the battery, but since I am getting a charge via wall chargers im not sure what to think lol
Just an update.
If i have the USB cable plugged in (and car charger to which doesn't charge as well ) after 15 min or so a warning appears saying that the current is too low to charge the device. Either closed unused apps or switch to a/c power.
I've ordered a 1800mah Mugen Power Battery. Gonna see if it resolves the issue, if it does then i'm gonna call at&t and see if they'll swap my battery for me.
I have found as have others here after reading some posts that if the phone is almost dead or battery is very low then it will not charge via the USB anymore. The orange light goes on and it says that its charging but the charging circuit seems to be protecting the phone and not letting the battery charge.
The only solution I have found, and it has only happened twice so far is to plug it into a wall charger and fully charge the battery. It will then charge via USB again and all is good. I normally only charge my phone with usb while connected to Activesync but once in a while you seem to need to top it up with a wall charger.
It is also highly recomended not to run Lithium Ion batteries right out.
How do you know it is not charging?
There is a difference in the wiring from a wall charger and a USB charger. There is a signal line in the wall charger telling it to charge at near 1000ma. In the USB cable that line tells it to limit the charge current to 500ma. That is the limit for current that you should pull from a USB port. If you are using the unit heavily, you may actually need more then the 500ma., those running the battery down possibly.
If the unit is idle, it will still take much longer to charger from USB then off of a wall charger.

If you are asking me, I know it was not charging because I also had the "not enough power to charge message" and the phone went from about 15% when I plugged it in to stone cold dead by the morning. The whole time it was pluged into a computer I have used repeatedly to charge it with. I then put it on a AC charger and it went to full charger in about an hour and a half or so.

[Q] Anyone else notice USB charging takes over 6 hours?

I've had my phone on the charger since 8am (plugged into USB port) and it's still only at 87%...
I did take it off occasionally for a call, but other than that it's been plugged in...
Is this just a matter of USB vs. AC?
-RR
I think its a matter of shorting the data wires.
The OG Evo did this. The AC adapter would short the data wires essentially telling the phone its connected to the wall. The phone knew then it could draw power at a much higher amperage. (if you had the right charger you could pull over 1amp iirc) USB is only rated at 500mah, which is barely more than what it takes to keep these phones running with the screen on and doing things. I have a USB charging cable (came with some random car chager) where the data wires are shorter or something; when I plug this cable into the computer and my phone, the phone charges like its on AC. Granted the PC can't communicate with the phone.
6 hours is normal for USB charging.

The USB port is not for charging the phone it's for data transfers. The fact that it'll trickle charge your phone at the same time is a bonus.

[Q] Not sure how charger works on this phone?

Anyone know what needs plugging in to get this phone to charge please? I have always used it with both cables plugged in. Suddenly I am trying not to bother using the USB cable and it only charges in the cradle for a minute or so before the orange light goes off. With the phone plugged in OR with the battery plugged into the slot on the cradle. (therefore this doesnt seem to be to do with the charging circuits in the phone itself). I dont think it has always done this.
So I tried plugging the USB cable back in and hey presto, my brand new battery starts to charge properly.
Does anyone know if this means that the ac adapter connected to the cradle is malfunctioning and not putting out enough power? Or enough power constantly enough to continue putting out the necessary 5v? Or is it only supposed to work with both cables plugged in? When I unplug the ac adapter, the battery stops charging so I cant figure out where the cradle is getting its 5v to charge! Other have reported, worryingly, that the unit should charge with the USB cable alone.
I did look at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=282983 but they all talk about after market chargers not working, whereas I am pretty sure mine is the original Siemens sx66 charger. Does anyone think that the adapter is failing and eventually BOTH the power cable AND the USB cable wont put out enough power to charge the unit?

[Q] GSM Galaxy Nexus charges while off, but sometimes doesn't charge when on

I just started to have charging issues a few days ago. I have not changed my charging equipment and don't think it's hardware. I have tried a variety of wall chargers and cables - some Samsung and some not.
Here are a few facts (as far as I can tell, from testing).
USB connection (I almost never charge this way, but it's helpful in the car.)
- Charges fine connect to USB/Wall charger when phone is power down (completely off).
- Leave it connected to wall charger and boot and then it no is no longer charging (after it was charging fine while off).
- I did get it to charge after booting it a number of times. I don't know what triggered it.
- I made sure to hold the device steady while booting to make sure I didn't change the cable contacts
Desktop Dock (This is how I usually charge - in the dock while I sleep)
- Charges fine in dock when phone is power down (completely off).
- Sometimes starts charging and engages Daydream when put in the desktop dock
- If it doesn't charge in the dock, a reboot usual starts it charging/Daydream again
This sure sounds like a software problem to me, since it charges fine in both scenarios when it is powered off. Any ideas about any software or device settings that may block charging after boot? Any other ideas on what is happening?
Device particulars:
Galaxy Nexus i9250 purchased from Google Play US
Android 4.2.2
Rooted using Nexus Root Toolkit (from Wugfresh)

Thanks. I have cleaned the port out and moved the pins toward the screen. it doesn't seem to have helped.
