[Q] GSM Galaxy Nexus charges while off, but sometimes doesn't charge when on - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

I just started to have charging issues a few days ago. I have not changed my charging equipment and don't think it's hardware. I have tried a variety of wall chargers and cables - some Samsung and some not.
Here are a few facts (as far as I can tell, from testing).
USB connection (I almost never charge this way, but it's helpful in the car.)
- Charges fine connect to USB/Wall charger when phone is power down (completely off).
- Leave it connected to wall charger and boot and then it no is no longer charging (after it was charging fine while off).
- I did get it to charge after booting it a number of times. I don't know what triggered it.
- I made sure to hold the device steady while booting to make sure I didn't change the cable contacts
Desktop Dock (This is how I usually charge - in the dock while I sleep)
- Charges fine in dock when phone is power down (completely off).
- Sometimes starts charging and engages Daydream when put in the desktop dock
- If it doesn't charge in the dock, a reboot usual starts it charging/Daydream again
This sure sounds like a software problem to me, since it charges fine in both scenarios when it is powered off. Any ideas about any software or device settings that may block charging after boot? Any other ideas on what is happening?
Device particulars:
Galaxy Nexus i9250 purchased from Google Play US
Android 4.2.2
Rooted using Nexus Root Toolkit (from Wugfresh)

Thanks. I have cleaned the port out and moved the pins toward the screen. it doesn't seem to have helped.

[Q] Samsung Galaxy S2 not charging with External Battery for Portable Devices

Hi,
I am unable to get my Galaxy S2 charged with an External Battery for Portable Devices (e.g. Just Mobile Gum Pro 4400mAh).
With the Galaxy Ace I had the same problem. After disconnecting the USB data wires, keeping the power ones intact, it worked fine, but that does not work with the S2. Anybody else having that issue? The USB cable charges with wall charger and PC.
I would hate to buy a new external battery. :-/
Thanks,
kuschel
Could you rephrase your sentences. I am not able to understand the problem clearly.
Sure. The phone does not charge when connected to the battery pack. Charges fine with the same cable using my HTC charger.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Which battery pack is this? Do you have any link to it? What mode is the phone when its connected. Is USB debugging enabled?
Same battery pack here, and same problem... Deactivate usb debug and it will charge. Too late for me... Already ordered another battery pack... Oh well...
Inviato dal mio GT-I9100 usando Tapatalk
I'm using a Pebble and it works perfectly
Charging works after reboot
I found a partial solution. I connect the battery pack to the phone as if I would charge it. The GS2 does not show any sign of charging. Then I turn the phone of, it automatically boots up again & shows that the battery is charging - guess that works for me.
PS: After a disconnect I have to do ist all over again.

This works for me also. Enabling or disabling USB Debug doesn't make a difference with the Gum Pro.
interesting i have an energizer xp8000 and about to try it on my S2 hopefully it works but thanks to this thread have some work arounds to try too :
Glad I am not the only one
Thanks for the info. Until someone finds a better solution I am glad to know it's not me or my phone.
well i can confirm my Energizer XP8000 battery works with S2 fine = 52hrs http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1115104
XP18000 and ZaggSparq here charges my SGSII fine. It charges both in regular mode and USB debug mode.
just wait a while for extended batteries then you wont need an external battery. i have posted two links in the thread have a look in the thread forum.
I've used Proporta's 3400mAh Turbocharger battery without problems. Haven't tested it fully to see how much it recharges the phone, but I've gotten at least 50% charge back from it.

advantages of a good external battery is being able to charge more than one device i.e. notebook etc
I have the exact same issue when using a mini USB charger with a Motorola Mini to Micro USB converter. When I connect my charger, a pop-up on the notification bar shows "USB host cable connected", and it won't charge until I power off the phone. When I plug the charger while the phone is powered off, instead of showing the charging animation, it will boot up instead and start charging. Charging using the stock charger or PC work just fine. And I thought I was the one that created this complication while flashing different ROMs and kernels, but it seems like an issue with s2 phones.

I found that a lot of cell/mobile phones will not charge useless the two data lines on the usb adaptor are connected together , I have modified a number of usb adaptors myself to get them to work, some phones need certain resistances on the data lines before they will charge.
I use to have a Samsung galaxy tab 7" and it was super fussy about the chargers it would work with, I found this thread and this guy had found an usb to usb adaptor that has all the need fixes so you can easy make any usb charger work.
All my usb adaptors seem to work with my SGS2 without any adaptor so i dont know if this would work for you.
EDIT : unless you know what you are doing, dont do it.

I bought this and guess what:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/TeckNet-Dua...dible-Blackberry/dp/B000NDQ92W/ref=pd_cp_ce_1
the phone is discharging rather than charging while the battery icon shows that it charges.
more specific: I connect the phone to USB 1A port, I hear the beep tone and I see the battery icon turns to thunder icon , just the normal situation which shows that the phone is in charging mode. OK?
IF I use the phone (i.e. browsing with WiFi) the phone's battery level is dropping down instead of getting up. I use a battery app and I can check realtime the percentage. I must have the phone in standby on order to get charged!
Unbelievable but true! The external battery cannot hold the consumption while in use, even when connected to 1A port!!!
solution - how to charge SG2 with Gum Pro
Hello kuschel,
For me the following solution helped:
Just plug in your cable to the battery, switch it on. Then plug your cable into the phone but veeeeryy slow until the "MTP application" pops up. After that you can move the plug to its final position normally - your phone is loading.
For me it looks like to be a software issue - since I updated my phone to the current KIES version and rooted it (German KF3 Samsung original) I've had that issue no more...
Cheers

Well look at that. Worked first time and now my mobile gum battery pack is charging the phone just fine.
Which is a real shame as I have now ordered a replacement battery pack and the gum pro was actually really small and compact for a 4400mah device.

Did you try any other wall charger? It could be the charger itself, not the USB cable. Also, try a different outlet.
Device: Galaxy Nexus
OS / Browser / build number: 4.0.2 build ITL41F.I9250XXKK6
Kernel: 3.0.8-gaaa2611
AC adaptor output: 5v 1A
I have the same lack of charging issue.
I have tried 4 different micro usb cables, oem that came with the device, a HTC, a kindle, and a blackberry.
None of them charge the phone while its in the o/s.
While the device is powered off they all charge the device albeit very slowly when the device is powered off. I get the white charging icon of the battery with the bolt icon inside. Then it flicks to the animated charging icon for 3 or 4 cycles, then back to the bolt icon. -> loop that while it "charges"
Also in the o/s when i have the usb cable plugged in to the same laptop that used to charge it a few days ago (tested on all usb ports, and rebooted laptop + tested on other laptops). The device (in settings -> tethering) says i am not connected at all by usb to a computer.
Anyone else got this / solutions ?
I have this exact problem as well. Started yesterday!
Also having this issue, any solutions?
I think its a bug in Android my self..... but i did go to verizion and they gave me a different wall charger not made by samsung and I havnt had the problem yet... not saying it fixed it tho, because the problem wasnt always there, it only happened randomly.
It wasnt a problem with the battery its self, i had bought an extended battery trying to fix the problem and it did not.
I have the same problem now too.
Plug you phone in and go into battery settings. Does it say Charging(USB)? Both my Nexi had a faulty cable and both were replaced in 2 days for free from Verizon and the other from Samsung.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
No, it doesn't say charging. My cables are fine...
This problem is sporadic. Sometimes it will charge and sometimes it won't.
I contacted amazon about mine doing this and they offered to RMA it. Couldn't charge it even running a custom 4.0.3 rom so had it replaced.
I managed to fix it, I suspect it was due to me updating my software to version 4.0.2...
I booted it into fast boot and wiped the cache then restored to factory defaults in fast boot...
My friend who I work with also has a Galaxy Nexus to but his O/S is running 4.0.1 mine was fine before I updated since I wiped it is seems to be ok since my first post.
I only noticed this when I used a different charger that used a cheap two wire mini USB and a lower amperage. To fix it I rebooted. OEM and off a computer have worked fine for me.
I've also had the same problem. It happened to me a couple days ago. I've tried multiple different cables and outlets with no success.
Does anyone know if a factory reset will fix the problem?
If not, I'll have to go get it replaced at Verizon.
Just a follow up. I tried everything, experienced the same issues as the OP and finally traded it in for new one at my Bell provider. The issue does not seem to stem from the battery as USB is also non-functional (which would not be affected by the battery not charging). If you experience this issue I would highly recommend taking it back to your reseller (if possible) or contacting samsung for repair.
I had the sane issues. Powering down the phone using quick boot app while plugged in worked for me. Seems like a sw prob. GSM nexus 4.03

Powering down with "quick boot" is no different than powering down manually. I have tried both methods and they do not work for me upon powering back up. I've also reset battery stats in recovery mode but to no avail.
The only sure method is to charge the phone while it's powered off. What's interesting is that I don't seem to have this issue with my other Galaxy Nexus phone.
agreed it should be the same, yet I got different results, and this was after changing chargers, usb cords, computers, wiping data, wiping battery, etc etc (note that charging worked while powered off, albeit slowly, throughout this. perhaps it was simply a coincidence, but that was the only variable I changed at that point, and it charging has worked since then.
I suspect that it's due to me using a (motorola) oem two wire (power only) ac cable, though I am not sure (while trying to get the phone to charge while powered on, I used three different samsung oem cables, and two batteries, so I'm somewhat convinced this is a weird s/w error, whether it's a driver or android itself). has been working since then, and to be safe, I'm staying away from said cable.
Cool. Have you unlocked and rooted your phone? I have, but did the same with my other Galaxy Nexus which doesn't have this problem.
Has this problem been officially reported to Google?

Stop using the Motorola charger, once it happens it sticks until a reboot. If it happens with the stock one after a boot you have a problem. My guess is the Motorola chargers don't play nice with other phones as I've seen oddities before with other devices and their charger.

I have no Moto chargers but I am using multiple chargers. My OEM Samsung charger hasn't been working for me and my phone almost died. Just powered off, connected my Rocketfish charger, turned it on and it appears to be charging normally now. The only other charger I use is a plain USB cable connected to my work computer. Hmmm.
Again, has this been reported to Google? Is it an issue related to root or no?

[Q] Car charger USB Adapter weirdness?

On my primary car I use a USB adapter to charge the phone. Prior to the SG2 I had a HD2 which (I think) charged fine.
If the phone has a zero charge I plug it in and it will automatically boot and the charge indicator shows charging but the battery indicator does not move for a while. Charging when using the phone never seems to keep up with the charge. After about 5 minutes the top indicator (when phone is on) starts to move and the phone will charge - although it seems pretty slowly.
The weirdness - when I plug in the USB cable to a laptop when its off the battery indicator lights up on the screen (pictagram) showing the phone is charging but it doesn't boot which is correct. What is weird is below:
In the car when you attempt to turn it off the phone with the long power button press and select the right options the phone will close down - you get the TMobile logo then the screen blanks out - then IT REBOOTS on its own!
Could under voltage be doing this? or is the cig port doing something odd with the voltage or amps? Know the USB port works and charges because I can charge it off a laptop, wall charger, computer etc and it works as it should. Its not the cable because I tried it on the computers.
Also tried a different usb/cig adapter - actually three and get the same results. Car only has 1 cig port.
Anyone have an idea?

BEWARE: Qi Wireless Power Pad Charger For Smart Phones

http://www.ebay.es/itm/271346218746...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
I bought this item and IT WONT WORK properly with Nexus 5 Phones.
To sumarize:
- It's behaviour is erratic. Sometimes it charges the phone, sometimes it doesn't. Sometimes it charges for a few minutes then it stops with no apparent reason. Sometimes the green light (means the device is charging) is still lit but the device is not charging anymore...
- if you try to charge the phone overnight you can wake up with a bad surprise (as I did) and the phone powered off because it stoped charging.
- During night, I use gentle alarm and it keeps my screen on (dark, just showing the time). It seems this QI charger is not even able to deal with it because it stops charguing the phone after a few minutes. If you pick the phone ant put it in the QI charger surface it will start charging again but, once again, it will stop somewhere later. USELESS!
- It is not able to hold the phone. Not at all. I thougt my phone would stick to the charger but it wont (maybe this charger can hold lighter phones, but not the N5). The only way I could make it tho hold my phone was keeping the protection plastic film that came with the charger (and is suposed to be removed and thrown away) as it seems to increase the adherence between the charger and the phone.
In short: I'm disappointed and have to advice you all not to buy it.

What are you using to power your Qi charger? From the sounds of it turning on and off and having sporadic performance, it seems like it is not being given enough juice. Are you just plugging the Qi charger/included cable into a PC USB port or something?
The best way to make sure a Qi charger works properly is to plug it into a wall outlet using an AC adapter/cable that provides equal, or more current than the required input. Your Qi charger says Input DC 5V 1.5A. So you should have an AC adapter that provides that, as well as a USB cable that supports high speed charging (like the stock Nexus 5 cable).
Have you tried using the stock Nexus 5 AC adapter and stock Nexus 5 USB cable? Most included USB cables that ship with Qi chargers are quite crap. I know that the stock Nexus 5 AC adapter is 1.2A, but it is still a good block and should power your Qi charger well enough until you get a higher output AC adapter. If you haven't, try testing your Qi charger using that block and cable and see if there is an improvement.
Yes, I tried all that. I used several ac adapters, including N5 charger and 2 Samsung adapters

I guess if that's the case then try contacting the seller and asking for a refund or replacement. You probably got a lemon.
Tell them it doesn't perform properly or show them with pictures and/or video of the slow charging/disconnects.

[SOLVED] SM-P605 (kitkat) battery charging problem

It is solved! Some 3rd-party usb chargers have same issue.
Samsung standard charger works very well.
I have a Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition (Hongkong, TGY).
Yesterday I updated my device to 4.4.2 (P605ZSUCNE3_P605OZSCNE3_TGY) with Odin.
Upgrading was OK, everything works fine except a battery charging problem.
When device connects to a usb charger, the battery stops charging after 1-2 minutes although not 100%.
I tried something but nothing helps.
- Changing charger/cable to another
- Factory reset (Recovery mode)
- Flashing P605XXUCNE2_P605OXACNE2_NEE (Nordic) Firmware
- Power off mode charging -> It works. This is the only way to make device 100% that I found.

I've got the same issue following the 4.4.2 update, all my third party charges that worked fine before the update no longer work. Battery management software show the device getting the same mA of current to the battery but the device is not charging (it says that it is!).
Original charger does work but is not a valid solution for me, why are the non-oem chargers not working all of a sudden and how do I get them to work again?

I'm having the same problem, trying to fix with some charger mods (shorting data pins of USB) or fast charge kernel. The kernel hack did not work yet, but shorting the d+ and d+ pins of usb cable on device end works. (although I could achive max 1.5mah)
According to this
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...t-on-the-note-3-but-there-is-a-root-solution/
Samsung denies any intentional blocking and a connection between KitKat and third party accessories.
I tried my third party chargers and they too didn't work. Charging stopped when the screen turned off. However, my Motorola and HTC chargers do work. Maybe the third party tings have inconsisten voltage output or something like that.
I had the new Tab s 10.5 and some of my usb chargers would not work. I found a deal way to good to pass up so I returned the Tab s and THOUGHT I was getting a Note 10.1 2014 wifi. Yet lol I didnt I got a 605 which is AWESOME ..I just always wanted the SnapDragon chip. It was a tad over $400 32gb NEW.
Anyway so I turn it on set it up and it was downloading 4.4 already I wanted to stay with 4.3 after reading around here. Yet so far it works flawless. All my usb chargers work. I can be doing ANYTHING and it keeps charging. Like I said the Tab s I could ONLY use Samsungs.
In my case Android 4.4 for P605 is way better than 4.3. Great battery live, great performance, no or very small lags. But I had initial release of 4.3 ROM which was never updated.
I have a third party charger and it goes well. It is Chinese no marks.
If it is just shorting the data pins, then it will charge. But you will be limited to 1500mah.
I think it needs an Apple compatible charger. Only the Apple standard supports charging over Usb 2 at 2A, for the Ipad.
The Anker 5 port 8A charger is fantastic.

No, I did that mistake and bought a dual port 4a charger. Samsung somehow detects Apple charger and stops charging when screen turns off. I had to make an adapter for shorting data pins, like this, I can at least charge with 1.5a
while i was on vacation my p605 starts having the same problem. It is just loading while the screen is on. After getting black/off it takes a few more seconds till charging stops. This problem is accompanied by the symptom that the tablet won't be recognized by the pc anymore. It is just loading ('til the screen gets black). i have no idea what to do. i am not sure, if the different voltage on vacation could be a reason. based on the fact that i can't get it back to stock, i guess i can not get it repaired by warranty (or is there any way to get it stock? unfortunately mobile odin is not supported). i would be glad about some good hints and thank you in advance
Your cable or charger might have a problem or you may be using a different charger than original one.
Hi everyone,
I've found a bit different issue - my P605 (LTE) does not want to be charged when plugged into USB port (so, no charger is being used).
I tried both using laptop and stationary PC
//ok, nevermind. I've just found somewhere else, that it has been always like that (not noticed that before)
Exact same problem here - charging stops as soon as the screen lock kicks in, even with the original Samsung charger. Brought the tablet back to the tmobile store and had them connect to another Samsung charger - still happens.
Has anyone found a fix for this short of shorting the harger pins?
I don't follow my own advice, and never had this problem. But charge with the original cable where the two GND pins are connected. In most cables one of them is open.
My old Garmin Street Pilot with mini usb used the second GND pin to determine whether to remain operational and charge, or go into pc connectivity mode and do nothing else.
I have the same problem . After upgrading to Kit kat just a few days ago it would stop charging moments after the screen turns off. No matter what cable or charger
This happens to me only when I'm not using original 5.3v charger and original cable. Check your cable and charger. (although I think it works with 5v Samsung charger of my note 3 as well)
My last charger had 4.9v with no load, and certainly lower with a 2A load. No Problems. But if a charger is badly stabilized, it may drop too much, and the Note is very demanding, with twice the current of a typical phone.
I had a DIY adapter to charge my old Nokia stuff via USB. The Nokia chargers have a 5v spec, but one provided 6v, another 7v. And USB voltage seemed too low, there was sort of sporadic charge, with the connection dropping after a short time. But all connections were fine, must have been a voltage thang.
So i still have to keep a Nokia charger ready, only to charge my Nokia BT headset.
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition Charging Fail
Has anyone discovered a fix for this:
When I plug in my tablet...Samsung Galaxy Note 2014 Edition...Using any plug (I have tried factory charger, and multiple alternatives including Ipad Charging adapters) when the screen is on the charging occurs, but When the screen closes about 2 seconds later the screen turns back on the way it does when charge is complete, only its still at same battery level as before! I have tried closing all apps and still the same, Used Task Manager to close all apps and clear the RAM and still nothing, Gone into app manager and closed running processes and still the same results! I am operating KitKat (OS since purchase) and the only actual way to charge it is to leave a plug in all day with the screen On, or shut off the Tablet!
Is there a fix for this or what?
Its bad enough that I cant find a good bluetooth keyboard that is compatible with this tablet! Im on the verge of trading it in and going Apple! Someone please help...Keep me from turning to Apple!
Is there a fix for this even if it requires manually adjusting chargers or the tablet itself (the internal components)?
thank you all for your help!
