[Q] Emulated game rom catalogue UI - does one exist? - Xperia Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I was wondering if any android app existed that aggregated information on game roms.
I had in mind something like the XBMC library experience whereby you can scroll through a catalogue of films which each have their poster/dvd cover, a snippet of information and their IMDB ratings (etc). There is even a plugin for XBMC that does this for games.
The reason I am interested is because I find the current method through snesoid/n64oid disappointing. My current workaround has been to use the shortcut functionality of the aforementioned and link directly to a ROM and replace its icon with that of the game box art.
On a related note - is there any way to manually add shortcuts to games into the Xperia Play app? This would go quite far to providing what I was after.
Many thanks in advance for any information.
EDIT: I should say for clarity that I am looking for something that will then launch the applications, not just list them.

I think you are looking for something that doeasn't exist. It would need advance development. From my understanding you want to implement a feature into the PS stock app that loads games to load games that are meant to load via emulators. Wouldn't that mean the Playstation app would ahve to be an emulator? lol Try describing what you really mean maybe some dev can do something for you
Hope this helps

that's not what he is saying. he wants a app which can list the roms he has and then get data for them from various online databases and scrapers and then launch it with the installed emulator
so his emulator roms and possibly games are in a sort of catalogue.
atleast that's what I think he meant.

Yes. This is what I am after. I have just found something called 'Launch Me' on the Play Store which, whilst having terrible reviews, says it does at least some of what I am after.
The problem I've had in hunting these things out is that 'Android ROM launcher' tends to turn up google results for Android roms and launchers
I shall cough up the £2 and try this app.

Managing collections with the Nexus 7

Hi,
Does anyone know of an app (or apps) that allow me to use the Nexus 7 to manage my ever growing CD/DVD/Comics collection? I know there are a few apps out there but I'd need to be able to sync the data between my Nexus and my phone (for portability).
Also, do barcode scanners work on the Nexus?
Try XBMC. It does everything you need, movies, tv shows, pictures, comics and more. Its currently in beta so there is no official build for Android but if you do a quick google search you will see that there are unofficial .apk's to try. Check out forum.xbmc.org to find all of the info you will ever need to know. Its a very friendly community.

No, when I said collection I meant physical items, I want to inventory them (and keep that inventory in sync on multiple devices) so that I quit buying duplicates
Something like Evernote? You can take pictures of your collection, label the items, and sync across all your devices/PC.
At least I think you can do that.....
The Collectorz apps are excellent, but also kind of pricy. I use the gaming app and it works great.

Something like that yes, but one that doesn't need me to install anything on Windows or Mac (linux user). I'm trying out 'My Media Catalog' atm, it looks like it comes the closest to my goals of all apps I've found so far, but it still leaves a lot to be desired...
Next app to check will be Shelves...

I have heard that you can use an emulator to load the image files which come with eclipse. Sorry I don't have more details, but it is a start. Best
Okay, an Emulator for Android... Hm... On Windows or what?
You want to emulate your own apps on the PC? Then you should take a close look into Android SDK.
You want to use other apps? Then you need "bluestacks"... Just search for it and you'll be fine
Thanks i will look at it

Yes ... There is an Android Emulator. But what type of an emulator do you want ? ... That's a question you have to answer.
If You want an emulator to test android apps that you make:
Then you should use the Android Virtual Device emulator that comes with the Android SDK.
It allows you to test your app in different Android OS versions and screen sizes.
To know more on how to use it, CLICK HERE
If you want an emulator to simply run android apps and games on your Computer:
Then BlueStacks is the one for you. BlueStacks App Player lets you run apps from your phone fast and fullscreen on Windows and Mac.
It runs on Android 2.3 (i think). You can download it from the company website here - www.bluestacks.com
I would not recommend anyone use Bluestacks for an Emulator. It is sh!t.
Try Jar of Beans. It is an XDA developer build based on the SDK emulator and has great things like GL rendering, root access and is more functional and close to real device than currently what is offered as part of the SDK. You can at least test full rendered wallpapers without force closes and or total device failure i.e. shut down of your emulator.
The developer has it updated to 4.1.2 Android, but I am currently working on Updating it to 4.2.2. So far I have managed to port across a fair chunk of the Ouya gaming console as an emulator, however it doesn't run properly.
I have done some hacking in Windows and developed an application/ "add-on" that allows users a one click method for run the Android emulator in a RAM Disk (although it is very alpha, untested and not something I am going to upload just yet).
RAM disk performance is said to be approximately 50-100x faster than solid state drive, so the potential looks to be very promising! :victory:
Although my code is something else. Umm let me just say this, at execution or runtime there are no error checks in any steps of my code lol. Essentially my app in its current state assumes no errors. I am definitely not an idealist, and more so a pragmatist by nature, however due to lack size of code I had to make, lack of of time and surely extreme eagerness (to see its potential) on my behalf to view its potential managed to get it working.
All I can say is that it is fairly complex to set up and probably the reason why we have not seen or heard of it yet, so for me I wanted to build something that wouldn't mind boggle people at the thought.
I may write essay length posts, but I am not all about essay length tutorials. I would rather make something that puts the essay into code and actions that is simple for people to use.
My goal is to have fully working interface for people who want to run Android on Windows that has all of its functions. I also want to have a testbed of an emulated console to allow people to run accelerated Android game play with full rendering support on Windows. This requires full bluetooth emulation to allow for game controllers to connect to the virtual android device. Something not yet working. It is available on some developer X86 builds but is that is a lucky dip and will require you a sh!t tin of work to configure.
You can try the VirtualBox builds of GENYMOTION (previously known as AndroVM) that i can get to boot maybe 1 out of every 10 attempts. If you change any setting inside the VM via their claimed app forget about it, delete the VM and start again.

ye i would do a google search for emulators as bluestacks is not a very good one, in my game i wont render some thing correctly or at all leaving ether nothing there or a black.
Now Bluestacks released new version. It is work perfectly
If you're primarily interested in gaming, I'd suggest considering LeapDroid. There is no subscription or monthly fee, and the emulator has been optimized for gaming
http://leapdroid.com/
Key features include:
- key mapping
- multiple instances, (two emulators side by side)
- very, very fast start up speed
- you can use your google play account
- painless installation
my favorite is Genymotion
there is clearly a need for such product hope one day somebody will create it
Thanks for all the answers.

[Q] Best working Emulator Frontend?

Hey guys,
I've been trying to find the best way to put my games collection on my fire TV and so far all of them dont work well.
I even tried to use XBMC with the config information here: http://forum.xbmc.org/showthread.php?tid=183527
No need to make any changes to the Rom Collection Browser since its been updated recently.
Rom Collection Browser(XBMC): Works but doesn't resolve misnamed files well at all. Gameboy Advance and PSX games collection buttons do nothing. Cant use because all images and videos are stored onto local drive maxing out the box space. I even made a Advancedsettings.xml file to move the cached items from xbmc to the usb drive and it doesnt allow my xbmc to run.
Advanced Launcher(XBMC): Requires much more configuration than Rom Browser. I keep getting a launcher.xml error when it tries to write to the plugin folder so it doesnt save any roms or changes.
Gamesome: Works, fantastic file identification but you have to input 100 games at a time or it will crash on new file scans. Also no way to remove previously scanned items that have moved or been deleted.
Any Input or ideas anyone?
If you have the choice to delete games through the Gamesome app,do so to properly remove them from the list.
If you have lingering game names, you will have to clear the data of the app in order to remove them, but will have to customize all of your settings again if you do clear the data.

Lol yes
Here is an awesome place I once forgot the name of,but eventually found once again.
It has unlicensed and pirated nes game dumps for nes.
I wish that the large compilation pack was still available so you would only have to download one file.
cah4e3.shedevr.org.ru/
There's things like Zelda SNES port for NES,Toy Story partially ported from Genesis, and Pokemon Diamond 2 on NES.
It says FAMI Dumping Project, but they are in .nes format for easy playback.
Just use retroarch's FCEUmm core to play them all,as some are using difficult mappers.
Surprisingly,it is still ongoing with new dumps since the last one was June 21st this year.

Nexus 5x. From noob to Master. [Seeking answers to advanced questions]

Since I am new I just wanted to introduce myself and ask that if anybody is capable of answering some intermediate to advanced device specific Nexus 5x questions including but not limited to hardware/software, as well as related questions to the community and the technology Market, I would greatly appreciate it. My goal is to go from apprentice to Master of my android device. More importantly, I hope to gain a better understanding of the technology behind the scenes and how specific functions are compiled and executed so that I can satisfy my curiosity as it pertains to my Nexus and also the community.

Ok. So maybe I will start with the question thats been nagging at me a lot lately. I've searched and found very little information pertaining to the topic of my interest.
Main question: What is a game Emulator, and how does it differ from something like Game Guardian or Game Gem??
My ballpark guess based off what Ive read is that an emulator is something that allows you to for instance play gameboy games on your phone, or old school nintendo on your phone. And on the other hand Game Guardian allows you to edit values in the game.
But the bigger question is how Game Guardian works on a broad scale. I would assume that simple games are pretty easy to change values. However, how would it work on more complex games such as games that involve servers and multiplayer and games that developers have taken action to try to prevent such applications from working? And what about detectability. I am a big gamer in my spare time so naturally I am curious about these things and how they work, what they work on, and what they may not work on.
I guess I should also mention that any of the info listed above may be wrong or slightly misleading. My main question is the question I've been scouring the internet in order to find adequate answers.
Thank you for responding to my post.
Respectfully,
CT
Like you guessed, an emulator is a program that emulates the hardware of a different machine, for example GameBoy or NES so that you can play games from those machines.
Game Guardian is an app that modifies the running processes (game in this instance) register values. There are similar apps for Windows. They work by you looking for the value you want to change in the register and then inputting a new value. For example you want to change your HP. Your HP is 100 so you look for that value in Game Guardian, if there's only one you've found the value you wanted. If there are several, you change your HP and then look which one of those values that matched the first time changed and you continue until you've found the right one. This method might not work at all with more complex games and multiplayer games that store/check the values on the server.

Understood. On the subject of compatibility, are more complex games, for arguments sake lets go with a well known game developer EA.... do their softwares and services embed methods detect and then terminate sessions when you attempt to access with a rooted device? I've heard about android pay, but are there other major apps that can do the same thing? And furthermore, are there any specific countermeasures one can take to bypass this.
Hi guys, quick update.
Happy to say I accomplished I have successfully made a custom recovery using twrp. I should note that I took my sweet time and read and watched so many videos so I was familiarized with the ins and outs.
Just gunna post the links I used cause if you are a Mac user, you will definitely want to take a look since the process is slightly different...
I used this how-to geek for my guide: https://www.howtogeek.com/240047/how-to-flash-twrp-recovery-on-your-android-phone/
want to thank SlimSnoopOS for this post which is Vital for people using mac: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68758793&postcount=3
and I used this catalog to get the twrp.img that corresponds to my device: https://twrp.me/Devices/
Pretty happy I was able to do this right. Now I suppose I should evaluate my next move....

Doubt with compatible apps and AndroidTV

Hi,
Is there a way to tell if a play store app is native to Android TV?
In addition to the great list posted in the forum.
Otherwise you can confirm if the emulator MD.EMU (payment) and My Oldboy! (payment).
Or Is File Explorer Manager PRO (paid) supported? The free is but I have read that it is not the case of the payment.
Thank you!
Android TV devices are certified devices that come with a special version of play store, that only work in android tv devices.
If the apps you mention are found there it means they are compatible.
There are apps that work and support both handheld and tv modes, but there are others that only have leanback code in them and the rest are handheld only which dont have the leanback interface.
If you cant find those apps in official play store for Android TV you can sideload them or install a 3rth party market app to download them, but the apps may or may not work properly due to the lack of some permissions in Android TV OS, and also if the apps are not properly updated to work in nougat in first place.
You also have another alternative to Android TV , check my signature.

Not so sure about the Oldboy App, as I have not heard of it. But, there are plenty of pay for Emus, including MD.EMU if that's your thing. The only pay for Emu I personally went for was the Real3DOPlayer, and that was only 'Cause I couldn't get it to work under RetroArch. Which is really, the only Emulator you'd ever need.
Besides, ouYabuse (Saturn), or Dolphin (GameCube, Wii), alas that Emu still needs some Work though.
But, on the whole of it as far as Emulation goes, as long as you keep it realistic. (e.g. pre-PS2 epoch), the sky is pretty much have the limit. Granted RetoArch is great for about 90-ish% of your needs. Otherwise there are plenty of bespoke paid apps to cover the last 10%, or so.
As someone who has ES File Explorer Pro. It's a funny case. It seems that the TV App Store has a major hardon for the Malware version of this, and not the Pro. So its very hard to get it to find it. I generally tend to just sideload the off an SD Card. Which isn't a problem as it's licenced to my account, and it works just fine with the Remote.

Thanks for the reply.
My OldBoy It is an emulator for GB / GBC that at least normal Android is going great.
I was wondering if anyone had been able to look at it, since I do not have a Shield by hand, I would arrive in a week.
And regarding the File Explorer PRO I found it curious to read in the forum Geforce that only supported the version with malware and instead the payment was not.

Yeah I kinda gathered that Oldboy, might have had something to do with the Gameboy etc... Alas pretty much anything pre-NDS-3D, is so well covered under RetroArch. I never saw much use in it. It's the stuff that should work under RetroArch... e.g. 3DO, and Saturn emulation, which don't under the Shield TV. That has driven me to support the pay for options.
I think the difference between the free, and the Pro version of ES-FE Pro. Is that the Pro version does not automatically pop into the AndroidTV PlayStore. In fact before you even go any further. Let us be very clear on this one point.
AndroidTV (PlayStore), ≠ Android (PlayStore). Blame Google! Because of that it's like >90% emptier than ye old Phablet Edition. This is due to those Apps being built with Phablets (i.e Touch), in mind. AndroidTV has made all touchy-feelly Apps VERBOTEN on the AndroidTV platform. Such as they no longer show up.
So I suspect that's kinda what's going on with ES-FE where the Developer never flagged it as compatible with AndroidTV. Leaving the ever Ad spewing (and perpetually Money maker) on the PlayStore. 'Cause they've already had my Money for Pro, for nearly Two Years now, and I'm not about to fund 'em some more. Probably answers why Google aren't including it in the ATV-PS.
It's like most of the Amazon Underground stuff. You can sideload that as well, and install a few Games. But, outside of the Goat Sims, Alto, and Riptide GT. A lot of those Games don't work correctly with the Shield Controller either. Best example, would be Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.
So if you have that One app you just have to test it out by sideloading it first.
P.s. I'm starting to suspect that your "My Old Boy" App might be one of these Apps. As it is not showing up inside the ATV-PS. It seems to prefer Robert Broglia's Emulators instead. Now that may be 'cause he went back and compiled a specific ATV version of them. You might want to contact the Dev of My Old Boy, and request an AndroidTV version, which you can install off the PlayStore. Or, you can copy the *.apk off of your Phablet, and transfer it to the Shield TV. In which case you will also need to install something called Sideload Launcher. As most Sideloaded Apps do NOT tend to be displayed under Leanback Launcher.
I also have ex file explorer pro, but I found "xplorer" are easier to use with remote on Android TV, give it a try.
