I really would like to now if it is possible, in any way, to run Kindle Fire Utility on Windows XP. I've tried several times but it still says: ADB status; Offline. And yes I installed the drivers but I don't think they worked correctly. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Yes, I did KFU with Windows XP on a comptuer that's about 8years old. The drivers should still work, but I found you can't do the auto-install fo the drivers,
Download and Install KFU, extract and move to the directory in the directions (I think it's c:\KFU)
Plug in your kindle and point it to the drivers in the KFU folder.
(NOTE: I can't remember the name off the top fo my head as I'm not at my PC, but it did require me to download a file when I pointed it to the drivers when it was in fastboot. to get it to work once in Fastboot, they were easily found and downloaded)
Note2: I had to use the command line to get it out of fastboot as It was stuck in a boot-loop for a few min while I found the thread.

You have to manually install the drivers.
Search Youtube for nat3mil - he has a vid showing how to manually install the drivers.

I know how to install the drivers. The problem is KFU saying my KF is offline.

I successfully accomplished it yesterday. After reading how easy it was I figured I would give it a try.
Three hours later I had it successfully completed.
My problem was, you guessed it, DRIVERS! My Laptop is running XP Pro SP3 and I have had multiple android devices attached to it. I removed and installed drivers several time never with any luck.
So I borrowed my daughters netbook and started with that. I installed the drivers and opened KFU. It recognized my kindle right off so I chose menu option 2 It blew through it until it got to installing FFF (best I could tell ) and froze rebooting at the KINDLEFire logo. I left it alone for about 45 minutes hoping it would continue on it own...but no luck.
After waiting I shut down KFU and unplugged my kindle. I held the power button for about 30 seconds to shut it down and waited 5 minutes before restarting it. No luck, it booted to the logo and hung. I repeated this process about a dozen time with no luck.
Getting concerned at this point but not panicking yet, I plugged it into the netbook again, started KFU and rebooted the kindle. The whole time it booted I kept pressing the power button repeatedly while telling KFU to recheck the connection. After about 5 minute of this it recognized it, I reran option 2 and it completed.
So, yes it worked.

Too bad i can't edit the post title. Please bare with me.
My fiancee gave me her Kindle Fire yesterday. She got it as a Christmas gift last year and has only started it once since. When i first took a look in the Device information in Settings it said it was running 6.2.2 Stock. So i went to sleep last night with the sound opinion that i would root it and install CM7 Barebones or something likewise and make it functional.
Waking up this morning, i read the beginners guide and i took a look at the rooting guide for the 6.2.2. I install the Java SDK, Android SDK, Google USB Drivers and i do EVERYTHING step by step as directed by the guide. Finally, at the last step, when i try to get the device recognized using cmd "android devices", it fails to recognize. The installation worked like a charm, exactly like in the guide, besides this last step. So i reboot both the KF and the PC, still not working, and surprise, my Device Settings now shows Stock version 6.3 installed, overnight. Take note, i did not approve something like this.
The KF is only recognized as a Disk Device in the Device Manager in Control Panel. I cannot get it to be recognized as an Android Phone. I tried uninstalling the KF through Device Manager, Devices & Printers, but it always reinstalls the driver from the directories. I edited the .ini files as per the guide, so i have no idea what might be wrong. I even uninstalled the Google USB Drivers from the Android SDK Manager and reinstalled them, and the same result is happening. As a last resort, i did a Factory Reset, deleted the drivers from Device Manager and SDK Manager and reinstalled them, to no avail.
How on earth can i get a CLEAN install of ADB and the recognition of my KF for rooting WITHOUT formatting my entire Windows PC? If i take it to another computer and plug it in and follow the Kindle Fire Utility instructions, do i still need to install the Google USB Driver through the SDK Manager, or just the other stuff?
On a side note, if i ever ever achieve this, what custom ROM runs Google Play Store perfectly?

Just use kfu 0.9.5. If I were u I would do latest update before rooting it. You can get it from amazon and manually update it. That's what I did.

This is normal on Stock, OTA updates without your consent unless you have disabled the setting.

The drivers included with KFU are all you need. If you are to plug it into a different computer, it's suggested that you run the drivers installation on KFU first before plugging in the Kindle Fire.

All I have tried have worked flawlessly, with some exceptions where I just had to flash gapps to fix it.
MAJOR EDIT:
I may have been stupid but something happened. Now i have the Kindle as a Disk Drive and i also have it as a SAMSUNG Android Phone. They both are installed correctly but i STILL CANNOT see the device through cmd "adb devices". It's just a blank line.
Any ideas?
Sorry for the double post but this is worth mentioning separately. I saw in a different post that someone who has Samsung Galaxy SII phones and relative drivers get the Kidnle recognized under Samsung Android Phone. How do i uninstall JUST the Samsung Galaxy SII drivers from my PC? I have a Galaxy SII phone so, figures. Also have Kies installed and Droid Explorer as it runs CM9.
plug in your s2 go to device manager in control panel and you will see the drivers
Read the drivers post I linked you to earlier.
Delete incorrect drivers from the Device Manager and take note of what it should read as.
It may sound a bit too simple, but really, most of the issues come from bad drivers.

Just use Kindle Fire Utility 0.9.5 (the latest version).
-> Just keep unplugging, plugging, uninstalling, reinstalling drivers -- and restartting the KFU utility until you can see "Online" as status in KFU.
-> Choose install permanent root with superuser
-> Reboot (power off and on the kindle fire if necessary)
this will automatically install TWRP and superuser and root your kindle fire.
then you can keep using stock ROM by going to extras -> install google framework (where you can use google play with go launcher) or use twrp to backup, restore and flash roms.

I tried the process on another laptop and it worked. I installed only the basic SDK Tools from the SDK Pack, leaving the development stuff and drivers out of it. Then, i downloaded KFU and used the drivers there as the only installed drivers on the separate PC, and it worked like a charm. I was able to root, install a custom ROM and do every other thing i wanted.
Thing is, on this computer, i can't really get rid of all the drivers and utilities because they keep getting installed back. Should i use something like DriverSweeper or anything of the sorts?

Okay this is what u do. If your kindle is not showing up in device and printers unplug your kindle and power it off. Install drivers from the kfu folder again. After this is completed turn on your device and then plug in your kindle. The kindle should show up as a device on device and printers menu. If your device is showing up click on kindle and then click on hardware. Then click on properties and change setting. There should be a option for update drivers. After clicking on update drivers its going to give you a option to search for drivers. Click browse. Since you have already downloaded the sdk and installed it on your computer install adb composite drivers. It should install the drivers. Now go back to kindle on devices and printers menu and click on kindle. Go back to hardware and check drivers. Under device functions: it should have amazon kindle USB 2. Android composite adb interface 3. E:\ 4. USB composite device 5. USB mass storage device. Now exit all of that stuff. Go back to kfu folder and click run. Make sure the adb status is online and the boot status is 4000. If boot status isn't 4000 then it will not work properly. So what I did was download kfu 0.9.4 and when I clicked on run adb status was online and boot status was 4000. If you do see that, click install permanent root and su (option 2). When this is completed go back to kfu 0.9.5 and adb status should be online and boot status should say 4000. If this is the case go ahead and click 2 again and it should install permanent root and su and twrp. This is what worked for me.

Tried installing Kindle drivers on two separate XP systems and could not get them to install (driver signing issue and troubleshooting steps, including manual installation, did not work). Borrowed my daughter's Win7 laptop and everything went without a hitch.
Curious...is this common with XP? BTW, used 0.9.5

FWIW I also was unable to get KFU connected to my KF on XP. Like you, installing on my Windows 7 computer was painless and works perfectly.

Don't have enough posts to insert a link, but I downloaded and extracted the KFU, and double clicked the install drivers batch file. Got numerous errors and drivers never installed. Did it on Win7 box and everything installed fine.
You may need to refresh (Choice '0' in KFU) to get it online. I think I had a similar problem and rebooted Win7 box then plugged in powered off Kindle for it to be recognized.

Not sure what 000 is. I thought that:
normal (4000), fastboot (4002), and recovery (5001)
were the only options. Maybe someone with more experience than I can comment.

I got it to work on XP but had to install drivers manually.

I think this is where the beginning of my troubles lay. Wife's KF is version 6.3.1 and fully charged. Laptop is running Windows XP home edition service pack 3.
After I extracted KFU 9.6 to a folder called kfu in C drive, I tried to run the install drivers batch file. The WinUSB AndroidUsbDeviceClass failed. Unsigned driver. In system properties I changed the default driver signing option default to Ignore. Problem remained. Then I deleted the kfu folder and downloaded android.zip and extracted that into C:\Documents and Settings\USER\.android.
After doing that re-extracting KFU and connecting my wife's KF, KFU said that ADB status was online and boot status was normal. Device manager also recognized Android Phone and Android ADB Interface, no yellow exclamation points.
Encouraged by this I ran KFU and selected option 2. Where things hung up was the attempt to install FFF. The message was that KFU was waiting for response from device. The Kindle had the Kindle Fire logo and things just stayed that way for twenty minutes or so until I turned off wife's Kindle.
I tried to use the Kindle Unbrick Utility 1.1, every option, but the problem remains. When I plug in the KF, device manager still sees Android Phone and Android ADB Interface. Also, now KFU says ADB status is offline.
Any advice?

What exactly are you asking? Are you trying to boot the Kindle, or are you trying to run ADB?
If the Kindle's not starting, first verify whether FireFireFire installed or not. You'll either have the Kindle Fire logo with an android bot on top or a blue white Kindle Fire logo. If FFF is installed, you can enter recovery by holding power right after the device boots. If FFF is not installed, you shouldn't really be having trouble with the boot, but try holding the power button and rebooting multiple times.
If it's ADB, you could always reinstall the drivers. The drivers are unsigned, so I think everyone had to click past that too. Besides the drivers, some USB cables are problematic with ADB (I'm looking at you, Samsung). You could try unplugging and replugging, using a different USB cable, using different USB ports, restarting the computer, restarting the Kindle, etc.

I've had this happen before. In my case, using KFU instead of fastboot, I just shutdown the Kindle as you did, and then turned it back on while still plugged and waiting. It caught up right away and installed fine.
Apparently, it had gotten stuck when trying to switch to fastboot, so shutting it off and back on while still plugged made fastboot work correctly... for whatever reason.
Alternatively, you can go the "manual" route, rather than using KFU, as it can be a bit problematic sometimes: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747804&postcount=3 (may want to read the first two posts as well)

Look like you have ADB driver installed correctly not Fast boot. Try to install driver again *without* KF plugged in. Then power off the KF and finally connect to the USB cable.

It's rooted now. Eventually what I ended up doing was simply downloading different versions of KFU and running them after wiping the caches in TWRP in between each try. Eventually got root, but I'm sure glad that the manual driver install worked and that I had the recovery program in place. Good luck everyone.

I've spent most of today trying to root my Kindle Fire, which I just got in the mail today. I installed Android SKD and have followed multiple instruction guides to the letter, but when I go to root it in KFU, it says it can't find my Kindle. I've scoured the internet looking for a solution to this, but so far nothing seems to work, and every time I try to change the device software in device manager, it says the software is up to date and won't let me change no matter what I do. I'm kind of at a loss and my brain is fried, help would be much appreciated.

FIRST OFF STOP USING KFU UNLESS YOU ARE SURE IT'S A KF1 WHICH YOU PROBABLY WOULDN'T HAVE RECIEVED TODAY.
1) was the box black or brown
(black)=kf2
(brown)=kf1
uninstall the drivers from device manager, unplug kindle, install drivers from kfu, plug in kindle, profit

I installed ABD drivers and uninstalled all pre-existing Kindle Fire drivers, but I don't know how to install the Kindle specifically with those drivers? When I plug it in it just installs itself with no prompting from me so I don't know what I'm supposed to do.
I'm on WIndows 8, by the way.
Not trying to be difficult but I suggest you keep reading until it becomes more clear.
ESPECIALLY if you are "new to all this".. just try to read as much as you can in all of the KF2 threads.
PS. It sounds like the drivers are installed.. either check device manager or test with "adb devices"

I don't have windows 8, but you may have to turn off driver signature verification.
I've already turned off signed drivers. And ADB is enabled on my Kindle, if that matters.

I tried to update the driver software, clicked "browse my computer for driver software," clicked "browse," found the folder containing the .inf file. It said my software is up to date. I tried again, hit "have drive" instead, found the .inf file, it said the folder I specified doesn't contain a compatible file (even though I selected a file, not a folder??)
I ran KFU, tried to root it, it said fastboot uses a different device than ADB.
I don't know where to go from here, this is where I've been stuck for like an entire day. I've looked for ways to change the driver and I can't find anything that works.

What software version do you have?
I'm thinking you will have 10.2.6, which would make it a Kindle Fire 2.
If it is a KF2, I think you would be best following this guide.

You are welcome. Could I suggest that you now run a backup of your current partitions. They would come in useful in case of the device becoming soft bricked.

So as the title suggests I have a bit of problem.
Problem: Kindle fire (gen1 6.3.2) won't show up on adb or as a connected device (Windows 7, previously worked fine)
How I got there.....
So I ran KFU 9.8+ so I could root and install JellyBean
It was

trying to install fff
and it was taking a long time so I closed the window to try again.
This left my kindle in fastboot.
After trying KFU again it wouldn't recognize the device.
So I used fastboot and booted into twrp off of my computer.
From there I got to the regular twrp screen, and decided it would be a good idea to root my device from twrp.
So it booted up and I got a notification to finish the root process, which it prompted me to download SuperSu.
It booted up and tried to install the update.zip which failed and booted up normally.
So now I can't connect over adb, and windows 7 doesn't recognize it at all.
I'm trying to find a way to get firefirefire on it so it won't fail when it tries to root itself.
I did a system restore on my kindle, notification still pops up.
I tried booting it into fastboot with KFU, without luck.
As of now the kindle boots pretty much normally and works fine except for connecting over usb.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
What i would do of i were you is uninstall everything on your computer that is related to the kindle. Do you have another computer you can this Kindle on to make sure that it isn't a driver instead of your computer.

Oddly enough my kindle shows up just fine on my mac, and a win7 desktop.
Although on the windows machine there was a problem installing drivers, but it still popped up as a removable drive.
Do you think i'd be able to run KFU on it again without any hiccups?
Also along with that, how long should I let it run?
Is this a 5 minute procedure or like 30min?

You can check to see if ADB sees the device. If it does then you should be able to use KFU. It's been a while since i used the KFU as i have been rooted for a few months and have forgotten what it has inside it.
I will recommend to always check your adb and make sure it works because from ADB you can tell the device to do a variety of different things. This came extremely helpful when i was working on my gf's Insprie 4G and i by accident froze the device.
Also, this procedure is really fast. I've rooted a bunch of devices and they all take no more then 10 mins. Unless you have an HTC device and have to get the bootloader unlock from HTC (as in the Inspire).
