[All Carriers]Touch Wiz Themeing Questions - Galaxy S III Themes and Apps (US Carriers)

Since themeing Samsung's TouchWiz UI is not quite as simple as AOSP, and sometimes even device specific, I thought it would be nice to have thread for the themers here to help each other, post tips and things like that so we can all learn and get some killer themes going on this thing.
Also, (if this gets becomes a sticky) we can keep the themeing question threads to a minimum.
For those of you that don't know me, I've been themeing Android for about a year and a half now. I started on the Epic 4G then moved over to the Nexus S 4G. I'm always willing to help others at time permits.
Happy Themeing!
Since the US carriers were combined into one forum, please note the carrier for you device when posting.
When people are helping you make sure you use the "Thanks" button to show your appreciation!

I think there will be many great themes. Hopefully a few will be from me.

Themed the E4GT....and I'll be theming the shizzzz out of the SGS3.

I havent themed in a while so I had to dust off the good ole apktools last night. Ya I'm need a refresher course lol
Dont have my phone yet but I started to poke around just to get a feel for things.

Well, with all the US variants merged to together this could get sticky in here. Hopefully we don't have any issues with soft bricks, data mishaps or anything like that like we did in the Galaxy S days from using themes for different carriers.

i have a version of systemui i modified for att
I have custom battery icons (not 1% as i used 7zip instead of a full rebuild)
i was able to change the battery icons,
loudness/slilent icon, airplane icon, wifi icons, alarm icon etc.
but for some reason the signal icon changes are not being applied.. i tried clearing cache, and dalvek cache.. still no go..
CAnnot figure out where it is getting the old icons from.. looked in framework-res as well but as far as i can tell they are not in there..
I have changed these sucessfully before in ics on my sgs ii..
anyone have any ideas?
thanks

Since Gingerbread those have been called out from the systemui. If you are running an odexed rom, there's your problem. Many of the png's are loaded in the odex file and cannot be changed just by editing the apk.

nope with the 7zip method (read up on it) you dont need that.. you just swap .png right in the .apk(s)
it is the stock rom\
and i succesfully did the same thing in the sgs ii systeui (and those icons are in there since i can see them).. however, maybe you are correct in that there are another copy in the .odex.. but it would be strange..

It's more than likely that it's loading files from the odex. Can try deleting that but you might lose status bar lol

thanks cannot delete the .odex (systemui or framework etc) on a stock rom.. the phone wont boot. (i think) although i have a cwm backup.
faithfully waiting for the first 1% battery mod for stock one.. (if it combines the .odex into the .apk) for stock then i can put my own icons in on top and then i can delete the .odex

Hey Shane, I need some help, this image will be the death of me
Ive stumbled on this image on the et4g and now I really cant find where the image is, and what the name may be. I always have a problem with the image name/location of the puldown notification background in the image below, its solid black and I need to make it transparent. Ive looked in drawable-xhdpi in systemUI, with no luck. THANKS MAN.
Oh +1 for this to be a sticky since this will help all carriers.

Wow, I had never looked at the files yet on this phone. I've been trying to work on some AOSP themes with my Nexus S. I got the framework-res and twframework-res to decompile, but can't get the systemui to decompile. If you can give me some help on getting the systemui to decompile, I'll look for it.
Edit: Nevermind, got it.
Edit 2: I have not tried this, but taking an "educated guess" I would look at this in the values/drawables.xml:
Code:

#ff000000

If you want to change that to an image can change that to:
Code:

@drawable/pulldown_bg

then make an image named pulldown_bg and put it in the drawable-xhdpi folder.
Or (This is what make's me think this is right)
Look at the drawable/status_bar_expanded.xml and find:
Code:
android:background="@drawable/notification_header_bg"
and change that to:
Code:
android:background="@drawable/pulldown_bg"
making the image as above.
If it's not this then the other possibility I found was "notification_tracking_bg" which the color is called for in the drawables.xml and is linked in the status_bar_tracking.xml
Let me know if either works.

transparent notification bar?

is there a transparent notification bar?
Do you see one?
The bonsia rom has a semi transparent one. Froyo window theme has semi one also

If you go to the supernova rom's page he has a dark glass theme with a transparent notification bar. Unfortunately it comes bundled with an unattractve battery indicator that doesn't go away. I tried to flash a different battery but it changed the entire notification bar. So... your on your on with that one unless you don't mind it.

Mystery can you enlighten us? Is there a way to pull just the look of the bar out of any of these? or will it require rebuilt framework?

In order to get the bar transparent your gonna have to either flash one if the suggestions our you gonna have to edit a couple xml files. Its not as sassy as just swapping the pngs

@mystery- yeah I figured it wouldn't be that easy.. know of any good tutorials that might get me started learning how to do that? I mean change the .xmls not the flashing part I've got that down.. lol. I thought I saw one you or thomas posted but I can't find it anymore.
@nova- Its a little plain.. didn't mean to offend. There are sections that make It invisible on my wallpaper. In the end I just prefer a little color.. lol. I kind of feel the same way about the 4g, wifi, and I think silent buttons in the pull down tab. Not a lot of difference between on and off. Besides that I love the v2 theme.

As long as people help themselves more, such as you are doing, then I am more than happy to stick around and point people in the right direction. It would be completely different if you made a thread that said "I want a transparent notification bar. Make me one now." So as long as people start doing things like this more often, I'll be back in no time.
Which .xml have to be edited? Just curious

Ok, here's what I have found with making a transparent noticication bar for the Epic. Making the png semi-transparent will work, but only for the lock screen. Another png or image will hide the transparent bar with a black background. I have tried to find which image does this, but no luck so far.
statusbar_background.9.png is the status bar image.
Here is the one I use. You can get away with just editing this without worrying about draw9patch because it just stretches.

It in the framework-res.apk\res\drawable-hdpi\
The reason you can only see it on the lockscreen or on a live wallpaper is because of the launcher you are using has the background image set for 16bit, showing black under the status bar b/c the image doesn't fit. This shouldn't be the case for new newest LauncherPro as I'm told, the stock TWlauncher, or the 2.2 Launcher (Launcher2). If needed, just pull the TWlauncher from my rom, or you can run a live wallpaper.
Hope this helps.
ecooce, I know its about transparent notification bar, but you don't need to edit an xml to get it, there for I didn't understand.

[Q] transparent statusbar... any ideas ?

So I've been trying something, but with no success at all... maybe someone who knows his way around xmls better can help me...
I'm using CheckROM RevoHD v4 , and Vert's ICS Domination theme over it. What i would really like is to have a transparent statusbar...
What I tried so far :
- extracted SystemUI.apk and framework-res.apk from CheckROM zip and then
used zdune's patcher to get flashable zips.
This obviously didn't work because the apks currently in my rom are modified by
Vert's theming
- So i used rootBrowser to get those two files from the system folder on my
phone since obviously they are the updated ones, so i tried to patch those two
but to no avail , it didn't work
In both cases when i flash it i completely lose the status bar and the notifications , i.e. no way to open them.
Zdune's patcher may only work with CM7 based roms , I'm not sure if it even works with TW Roms at all.
So if anyone knows what I may be missing , or knows another way I can get it transparent , please tell me. I'm really not quitting until i get it the way i want.
Edit : Opened a thread because no-one replied on my post in Vert's theme thread

I tried redirecting the status bar xml inside systemui to point to a png instead of a hex colour and it worked, but constantly force closed on me so I must have missed something.
The man to ask is criskelo as his roms support custom status bars.

You can edit the statusbar.XML to point to a PNG. That's the easy part and offcourse the smali edit to make it transparent.
You can then use adw launcher and remove the wallpaper hack to make the statusbar transparent. But it does not work as expected, atleast for me. There is also the problem of notifications overlapping over the date.
In miui when you drop down the notification bar, the status bar does not stay transparent anymore. It points to another png.

[All Carriers]Touch Wiz Themeing Questions

Since themeing Samsung's TouchWiz UI is not quite as simple as AOSP, and sometimes even device specific, I thought it would be nice to have thread for the themers here to help each other, post tips and things like that so we can all learn and get some killer themes going on this thing.
Also, (if this gets becomes a sticky) we can keep the themeing question threads to a minimum.
For those of you that don't know me, I've been themeing Android for about a year and a half now. I started on the Epic 4G then moved over to the Nexus S 4G. I'm always willing to help others as time permits.
Happy Themeing!

Code:

@drawable/pulldown_bg

then make an image named pulldown_bg and put it in the drawable-xhdpi folder.

[All Carriers]Touch Wiz Themeing Questions

Since the carriers were split up and the most posts in the original thread came from the AT&T themers, I think we should make that the main thread.
[All Carriers]Touch Wiz Themeing Questions
Please post in the thread linked above so we can keep all the info in one thread.
Thanks,
Shane
Since themeing Samsung's TouchWiz UI is not quite as simple as AOSP, and sometimes even device specific, I thought it would be nice to have thread for the themers here to help each other, post tips and things like that so we can all learn and get some killer themes going on this thing.
Also, (if this gets becomes a sticky) we can keep the themeing question threads to a minimum.
For those of you that don't know me, I've been themeing Android for about a year and a half now. I started on the Epic 4G then moved over to the Nexus S 4G. I'm always willing to help others at time permits.
Happy Themeing!
