[Q] Returning phone to AT&T for another - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all! I love my Galaxy S 3 but I believe that the head phone jack may be damaged because it is making a hissing / popping sound when playing audio on any headphones. I have never returned a phone before so should I simply do a factory reset, take the device back to AT&T, explain the issue and ask for to exchange for a new Galaxy S 3? Or should I say complain about a different issue and request a exchange for that? I activated my phone 3 weeks ago so I am still within the first 30 day period. The reason I mention the different issue is because I do not know what will qualify me for a exchange since I have never done this before. Thanks all!

Factory reset first to see if problem persists. If so return and tell them you reset it.

Make sure you bring back everything it came with so they can just swap it out. Bring headphones to test if your new one has the same issue

Phone reboots

Hey folks
These aren't really random reboots, and they don't seem to be caused by an app. They're more like 'when I touch it the wrong way' reboots. If I set the phone down, or pick it up, sometimes it will reboot.
I checked the battery contacts so that's not it. I'm thinking its either a problem with some internal contacts, or something with the accelerometer.
Has anyone experienced something similar? I just passed my 1 year manufacturer warranty period, unfortunately.
Thanks

Hmm sounds like a hardware prob. It shouldn't be the accelerometer. Does it reboot when u are using it?
It rarely reboots when I'm using it. It will usually reboot when I pick it up or set it down. If I drop it on my bed from 2 feet up for example, it may reboot. What's weird is that its not a guarantee. In fact I've gone days without a reboot, and sometimes I'll get numerous reboots in a day.

Several people have noted there can be a problem with the battery not fitting snugly into the chassis of the phone. When you drop it, the contacts on the battery can move slightly off the contacts on the phone and it can reboot. Some people just shim the battery down a little.

I do not know how far you are out of warranty.
I was in the same situation 2 weeks ago. I was on my last day of warranty (so I thought), when I got tired of the constant reboots. I went to my local TMO store and they claimed that I was out of warranty by one day. Fortunately they put me on the phone with customer service. There it was confirmed that my warranty was out since 1 day. The person was very nice and said: "Let me see what we can do for you". She came back after one minute and offered me a waiver that would have allowed an immediate full upgrade. I told her that TMO does not really have any upgrade that I was interested in (I wanted a keyboard and stock Android), so she went back to her supervisor and came back with the offer that they would assume that my warranty would not run out on that day at 12am, but at midnight and that they would replace the phone under warranty. I have the phone now for a week AND no more reboots. TMO rocks !!
PS: I am with TMO for > 7 years
Yea tmo had some awesome customer service from my experience! I really hope they don't get bought out. Kinda inevitable though since the owners don't want it...boo!
Awesome experience! I work in Customer Service, so I know that I could theoretically get it replaced and whose arm I have to twist to get it. But I don't have the time to spend doing so. My phone hasn't rebooted in a few days now. I did a full wipe before I flashed my next nightly. I have my fingers crossed that it stays that way.

I feel silly even mentioning this, because I thought I might be the only one dumb enough to suffer from it, but I will go ahead and mention it anyhow. I was hating the reboots with my G2, and found somewhere that I needed to actually make sure the SD basket was locked in place. I had replaced my SD card, and didn't realize it slides into a locked position. Have never had a reboot since I clicked it in place. That was months ago. Hope it is something that simple for you. Yes... I know I was a dufus for not realizing how the SD basket worked.
I had the exact same problem and I could not figure it out. I finally did a complete wipe and reinstalled problem stopped. I also converted my partitions to ext4 but not sure if that would make a difference.
Could it be the radio?
I did a full wipe prior to flashing CM #231. I used titanium backup to restore my apps. Now the reboots were gone!
But my GPS problems returned. I flashed the next best radio 26.08.04.30. Last time I initially switched radios to fix my gps problem. GPS is still broke, and now I am rebooting again.

t989 no vibration

Hi Guys.
On stock, 2.3.6
have no vibration at all...
is there a way to solve this?
Thanks
Try a factory reset.if not then warranty exchange

My first phone stopped vibrating. It was only a week old so I had it swapped out with a new one. But based on my experience there is no fix. Good luck.
just factory restore it and you should be good to go!
Enjoy!
I've had no vibration for about six months now, and I think it's a hardware issue. It goes in and out, depending on if I've recently plugged headphones in. There's something shorting out in the vibration/headphone module, but I called Samsung a while back and they basically refused to acknowledge is was their fault. I'm not feeling too great about buying another Samsung device.

[Q] Random Shutdowns

I've had my phone for about a week or so and since that time I've had it randomly shutdown during phonecalls while plugged into my charger in the truck. I think it did this while playing music through Google Play as well as talking to my wife, but it keeps happening. The phone is NOT rooted and I suppose it could be an app I have installed, but it's frustrating trying to figure out which one if that's the case.
I haven't confirmed it, but it *appears* to be only happening while either A) connected to BT or B) plugged into my charger in the truck (which I used previously for my Atrix) or C) maybe it's while both are connected? I haven't noticed it happening other than when it's plugged in and using BT. Also, forgot to mention it shows me a picture of the battery when it drops (whether it's full or half full or whatnot) and I can hold in the power button and it comes back up.
I scoured Google and saw several posts about this issue, but none of them provided too much information. Anyone else have this happen yet? Should I contact ATT and get it exchanged? Any help is appreciated.
If you've only had it for a week, I'd take it back to an AT&T store for an exchange. My first GS3 was stock and had issues out of the box with random shutdowns and reboots. Took it back and asked for a new sim card also just to be sure. The replacement has been rock solid, so the first one was just a dud. The AT&T store I took the first one back to was very helpful and made the swap with no hassle.

So some of them are just random duds? Well that's good to know I guess. Hopefully they'll be willing to exchange it at their store. Is there any other possibility anyone can think of or should I just swap it?
Thanks for your help btw.

My first one was shipped from AT&T wireless. Took it to an official AT&T wireless store (not just one of the authorized dealers) and it was swapped quickly with few questions asked. Lots of these were made in a short period of time to meet demand, so some made it through half baked. New one has zero issues.

Mine was also shipped via ATT Wireless.. Okay.. I'll print out this thread and just show it to them.. lol..
Thanks again for the help.
My first one did that and i found that it always did it to me and i tried to replicate it and found that if left in heat it random reboots everytime.
Ive always left ever phone ive owned in my truck while playing bball and this is the only one that does this.

Mine reboot on its own several times a week. Usually while in my belt case. Planning on getting ATT to swap it at some point, but am lazy and not super motivated yet. They were good about similar issues with my old Captivate at the real ATT store.

WiFi and Bluetooth stuck at turning on.

For the past two days I have been having issues where my wifi and Bluetooth wont turn on. The problem started after rooting. I unrooted and returned the device to normal status and no binary downloads but eh problem persists. right now both will turn on and off fine but every once in a while they get stuck at turning on. after a few resets and simply waiting everything goes back to normal but this has happened at least 5 times since yesterday. On my s2 I had a similar issues with GPS. the only solution was to do a factory exchange. I am already set up and the replacement will be sent once the phone is back in stock. I was just curious if anyone had a similar problem and resolved it without having to exchange the phone.

I haven't had any problems today but I know as soon as I loaf all my apps back it will happen again. To be on the safe side I am just going to return it before it gets worse.
I'm having the same problem. Did you go through T-Mobile or Samsung for your replacement?
Went through tmobile. It's been good for more than 24 hours but I don't trust that it won't come back. Then phone is back ordered original would have had the new one by now.
Yeah, it actually started working for about a day, but stopped working when I left the house. Just went to T-Mobile to process the exchange, but they're telling me they can't do it due to the IMEI stating it not being "sold" through a T-Mobile store. Which is odd, because I bought it at a T-Mobile store at full upgrade price while my roommate was working. I have the invoice somewhere here...
Time to jump through hoops to get this replacement.

I noticed it usually gets stuck when I leave the house as well. Do you use airplane mode a lot? when I am home I usually keep my phone in airplane mode with Bt and wifi on. the first time this happened I also noticed the wifi looked as if it was connected when i was a mile from home and i had to power down to get a cellular signal. I have had the phone since day one and this just started last week after I rooted. Since many people have rooted and this isn't a known issue I guess its best for us to return the phone and see what happens with the next. Find your invoice and they have no choice to replace it. If you paid by credit card that should work as well. Just show them your statement.

I don't use airplane mode at all. T-Mobile gave me the run around so I decided to go through Samsung for my replacement. They originally wanted me to send my phone in for repair, but no way am I going to be without the Note for more than a day.
A Samsung Experience Shop popped up in Best Buy just outside of Chicago. The woman running it wasn't a Best Buy employee, but a Samsung Specialist. She troubleshooted my phone (Factory reset it, even though I told her I already did) and Wifi and Bluetooth didn't work at all. She called her contact at Samsung and they're having a replacement sent to the store that I'll pick up when it comes in and exchange. Good news is that I don't have to send in my Note and have to wait on it!
I haven't had a problem in two days but my replacement is on the way so I will just wait and see if it happens on my new one
OP, I had the exact same issue as you. Wifi and Bluetooth just stopped turning on, intermittently at first. After trying to figure it out for a month or so I decided it must be a hardware issue. Wifi and Bluetooth are controlled by the same integrated Broadcom chip, which might be a common failure point.
I sent it in to Samsung, and they have had it for 2 weeks now... I just got word that it's fixed and shipping back to me. They replaced the PBA (main board).
I have a question. How did you get service through T-Mobile? I bought mine at a T-Mobile store and I was outside of the 30 day return policy. I was under the impression I had to go through Samsung for a defect, or T-Mobile for an insurance claim (pay deductible).

I just called tmobile and they sent me a new one. I had a problem with my black berry a few weeks ago and thought i had to send it in for repair but tmboile sent me a new BB as well. usually most phones have a year factory warranty and tmobile is the one that handles that. My phone hasn't acted up in a few days but i am going to keep the replacement and send my old one back just to be on the safe side.
Anybody with a solution for this? Mine started acting up 2 days ago and I'm now a grumpy man.
Are you on custom Rom, and which Rom is it if you are
Possible fix: Odin to stock(sure way to check, or redownload Rom and wipe three times and reflash Rom

I'm now in Malaysia for another 3 months and a half. Won't be able to find any T-Mobile here. Any suggestion?
if you are on stock already, then it possibly is hardware
My problem started after I rooted using toolkit. I unrooted and rooted using stock injected but the problem persisted. I had to return the phone so I unrooted and used triangle away to get my phone back to normal. I did a hard reset and had the problem one more time. for the 5 days it took my new phone to arrive i didn't have the problem more than once. I also remember having a problem with my printer saying it was connected but i couldn't print from it until i reset the router. I think the time my phone started working find again was when I reset my router but i didn't put all this together until recently. I noticed that the only time I had the problem was when I had wifi and BT connected and went into airplane mode. then when I came out it didn't always connect back like it use to. I also noticed it when i had wifi connected and left my house. the wifi looked like it was still connected even though i was more than a mile form home. So maybe it had to do with my router connection and a bug where the phone thought it was still connected. if anyone is having this problem try resetting your router and see if the issues persists.

I used the toolkit in the original development thread, could it be the method you used for rooting caused that?
Is the problem there if you connect to Wi-Fi on a different router, like someone else's

I never tried connecting to another router. My problem seemed to be that it never properly disconnected from my router so when I came out of airplane mode of couldn't connect. Also bluetooth was stuck.

[Q] No sound from earpiece speaker

Hi guys,
My girlfriend bought a One M8 about 2 months ago and has had problems with it from about 2 weeks in.
Basically after buying the phone new, after about a week of use, the Earpiece speaker completely stopped producing sound - during calls and in general, for example when playing music, YouTube, etc. To check whether it was a hardware fault, I performed a factory reset which cured the problem.
A few days later the problem reoccurred. This time we took the phone back to the point of purchase, explained all this. I pushed for a full replacement explaining that a factory reset solves the problem but it reoccurs, but obviously the just gave me back the same phone.
Phone worked for about 2 weeks, then same thing. Tried another factory reset this time not restoring in any way (just to try as I know the Notification light not working could be due to this), same thing after a week.
Does anyone have any ideas? This is totally infuriating and I can't make any sense of it. Obviously its not the hardware, but can't understand what is going on hear. If anyone can shed some light it would be much appreciated.
Any ideas anyone?
I have purchased a HTC One M8 Dual Sim a week ago and have just experienced the same problem (I think as I have not tried to do a factory reset at the moment.
Did you get any further with this issue?
Mine is not the same as I did a factory reset and the problem still persists.
Guess I will have to look at replacing the speaker. ?

Did anyone find a way to resolve this?
I had this problem once and took it back to HTC...I think they just resetted it and the earpiece speaker works again.
Now after two months the issue is back again.
This is a software issue for certain, though after resetting the problem persists....I have unlocked my phone and it shows modified...so might not be under warranty anymore.
Anyone know where the sound drivers are for the phone? or anything I can try to flash or change to fix this issue?
Its not just the ear piece speaker, but also the back mic...
I couldn't solve the problem. In the end I returned it to where I had bought it and insisted on a refund (demonstrating that after having the phone fixes the problem persisted), it took a while but I got it. Then bought another M8 from elsewhere which worked perfectly.
I'm afraid that probably isn't much help
