best class of SdCard to get - Galaxy S III Accessories

Hey everyone,
I'm thinking of getting a 32 microsd. Card for my S3. I was wondering if a class 10 is necessary or would a class 4 or 6 be sufficient?
Thanks.

Class 6 is sufficent I read somewhere that class 10 is good for taking pictures or something but for this phone class 6 is enough.

It depends on what you'll be doing. Personally, I'd go for a UHS-1 class card. They're just above class 10. Sandisk has a 32GB one for about $40 on Newegg.com. That's what I'm using right now. It has been awesome thus far.

uhs are useless for this phone, no phone on the market supports this feature.
just get the best you can afford, anything above class 4 is enough, but prices aren't much different, so a class 6 or 10 can be in reach.

That might be the case on the international version, but when I'm taking pictures my UHS card it certainly seems to record them faster on my US - AT&T version. I wonder if anyone has done any any read/ write benchmarks to see for sure.
But I do agree, unless you have a need for speed, anything over class 4 should be good for everyday use.

i standby what i said, no phone supports uhs, unless you can prove otherwise.

What about if you use it as USB mass storage? Or making backups
of it? Or it's still limited even though that?

i personally have about 10 class 10 16gbs, and around 12 class 10 32gb, and 4 class 6 64gbs. granted i use only 3 or 4 of them i just have a alot extra. i sued to work at best buy mobile and came up on a lot. couple months ago best buy sold a class 6 64gb online for $45. keep an eye out and look for deals. i do see a big difference in the class of cards. i usually have music and various roms and what not.

What about playing roms saved on sd cards would you notice a difference between class 6 and 10

it's not the card, it's the phone thats preventing the card to reach the limit.
a class 4-10 will work on the s3, you won't notice much of a differences.
---------- Post added at 02:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 02:06 PM ----------
if you want the fastest card on the market, but not for the S3, you only choice is the sandisk microsdhc extreme pro with upto 95mb/s transfer speed and only available so far 8GB and 16Gb.
or you can consider the adata microsdhc premier pro read 45mb/s and write 40mb/s available in 8gb, 16gb and 32gb.
as with both cards you need a uhs reader to reach the stated speed, otherwise you will only get max read 25mb/s and write 23mb/s which is the standard speed set for sdhc.

Class 6 is the sweet spot

Class 4 should be sufficient enough for normal phone use tho?
unless you are using DSLR perhaps?

Yea class 4 is fine
Class 4 - Good
Class 6 Excellent
Class 10 Overboard

Interesting post: UHS-1 cards may actually perform slower than class 10 in the S3.

I bought a SanDisk 32gb class 4 for $16.xx shipped on eBay. I only use it for music on on my phone. The ~16gb internal is more than sufficient for pictures and etc.

You should look at this thread:

Its not exactly a common brand like sandisk though..

class 4 has faster ram, class 10 has faster sequential write speeds
class 4 is better for every day, random use
class 10 is better for downloads and recording/playback of large files and HD movies

What is the best "class" of SDHC card for the Atrix?
I am sure Class 10 would be best, but if there is no performance benefit I would get a Class 4.
So, does anyone have performance benchmarks of different class cards in the Atrix?
Thanks!
My class 4 works with no issues
What is the recommended Micro SDHC Class for Atrix?
Even though it may support class 10, it might not be able to take complete advantage of it. Does anyone know if it results in significant performance gain over a class 6 or even a class 4 SDHC ? Links to articles from respected blogs/websites would be highly appreciated. Thanks!

+1 Don't waste too money on getting a class 10. Hardly any noticeable difference u'd find. Class 4 should work pretty good.
it may not make a huge difference while it is in the phone but if you take it out to load and unload data it will make a difference there....

Exactly! It is for this reason I prefer faster write speeds. Cheers.
provantage had lexar 32gb c10 on sale for 75 (82 shipped) a week ago, picked it up since it was 90+ everywhere else. no big difference from that and the old c6 i had that i have really noticed while in the phone. not a big fan of the adapter that came with it.

Great deal on www.1saleaday.com ....$29.99 + $5 for shipping ~= $35
its only a class 4 so not the best but for anyone who needs a lot of storage on their phone/tablet, its a great deal! Get it while you can ....its only good for 1 day.
Yeah I'm getting one of these.

Actually that's incorrect I found out the other day. Sandisk has released a 64gb microsdxc card that has apparently been found to be compatible with the sgs2.
Copy pasta:
Class 4 or Class 10? Depend upon what you want it for
Class 2 and 4 cards have better random access speed and random read/write than class 6 or 10 cards in general. To get higher sequential write speeds, manufacturers sacrifice the random access speeds. That's just how it is.

So if you want to use the microSDHC card for photos, music, or video, then you may be better off with a class 10 card. If you want it for Readyboost, smart phone, Nook Color running Android OS, or other device that requires fast, ramdom access, then you should buy a Class 2 or 4 Sandisk flash card.

I picked up 3 sanDisk 32gb class 4 cards on amazon the other night for $16.40 a piece. I thought I would never see them and would end up getting a refund, but they showed up two days later. They were sold out from that seller (he had 20) within minutes. Right time at the right place i guess.

Need a recommendation on SD card

Hey everyone, I've never purchased one of these for a phone as they've always came with one. Anyway I'm looking for a solid recommendation for a fast 32GB SD card. I have a Tiger Direct local to me so I'll probably try to go their today once I have something to reference.
Thanks

Don't do this. Look here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15269669#post15269669
I use a class 4 32gb sandisk and the speed is fine. Lower class cards are more realiable and the average user cant tell the difference unless you're transferring large files or large quantities of files at once. My class 4 acts like a class 6 but is super reliable.
Id highly recommend a class 4 over a class 10. There's a thread around here if you search that will tell you the benefits of a class 4 and lower class against higher class cards.

isn't the only thing the class does is gauge the speed of transferring files to and from the sd card, not the actual performance?

Higher class, like another poster said, will give you higher speeds for large file transfers. However, this comes (from testing) at a sacrifice in everyday use of read speeds on everyday smaller files (think gallery, music player, etc). That's basically a short summary of what other XDA members have found from testing. Personally, I picked up a 32GB card from SanDisk off of Amazon and am completely satisfied. You may have a slightly slower time adding all of your files initially, but you most likely won't notice the difference when accessing all those files later on the phone. Look up the card on Amazon and the corresponding reviews and decide for yourself. Hope this helps.

personally, i find those Class 10 to perform better for me.
the time it takes to write/read small files is negligent compared to the amount of time it takes to write/read large files like MP3, MKV, etc
those word documents/excel spreadsheets, pdf, notepad texts, loads up instantly on my Adata 32GB Class 10. and i got 3 of them
1 for music
1 for videos
1 for apps/games/docs/work
so again, that is yet another one of those where the benchmark says one thing, but real life usage shows otherwise
I use a PNY 16GB Class 10.

[Q] 16GB class 2 vs. 32 GB class 4

I currently have 16 GB class 2, and i am about to but 32GB class 4.
what is the diffrences beetween them ?
The games will work smother with class 4?
I have a 32 GB class 10 micro sd card, bit I didn't really notice any difference in speed compared to the 8 GB class 2 micro sd that came with the phone...
Sent from my R800i using XDA
The class rating of an Sd card is based of off its Write speed. So a 16gb class 2 would write at 2mb per second, the 32 gb class 4 will be able to write at 4mb per second, There is a slight "catch" however when using larger storage Sd cards, its been explained to me in the past that when you go up in storage it takes the device (phone, pc, camera ect.) longer periods of time to initially read the card itself because its now reading through more storage space then before (even if that space is empty in places).
With that in mind, the 32gb class 4 will Write files to it self at a faster speed then the 16gb class 2, but it will take your phone longer periods of time to access the information on the larger Gb card, so will games play smoother off your Sd card, technically no, they wont. But what you will achieve are faster data transfer rates when moving files to and from.
Also take into account that the class rating system isnt exactly perfect. For instance my 32gb class 4 is rated to write at 4mb per second, but its achieved 6mb per second depending on the files, and Im currently using a 32gb class 10 which most of the time writes data at 12mb per second.
I hope this helps

There was some other thread around where people found that class10 cards had higher latency and slower access times than the class4 ones. So they're not really suited for mobile phones where quick data access is more important than high transfer rates.

I still believe storage size has a greater effect on access time then the class rating, classes are read/write speeds but more space takes longer time to read. The class itself being suitable, depends more upon the manufacturer of the sd card, and the manufacturer of the device and the device its being used in. A 4gb class10 is going to give you great performance in your device where as a 32gb class10 will indeed function a little slower but depends if you need all that space or not. I'm no expert but that has been my experience.

It will decrease its "lifespan" but probably won't kill it, I think the apps2sd script bumps things up drastically and I didn't have any troubles for the while I was using it, but the SD card manufacturer and its class might have some effects on the bumped up lifespan .. probably good to at least make sure you have a spare!

Class 4 or 10?

Hey guys,
I was originally going to get a class 10 64GB micro sd card for my note 2, as I filled it within 10 minutes of using it, and I have less than half of my music on it.
But I've decided that's too expensive. Would a class 4 be alright for just music and videos up to 720p?
If so, why does anyone bother with class 10?
Thanks.

The UHS means it has content transfer speed of minimum 30mbps to maximum of 104mbpswhen you transfer the content from MicroSD to System(PC)....but the data write speed on the MicroSD depends on the CLASS mentioned on it i.e.....

I told you that class 10 is pretty uselles in smarphones so you dont have to look there.
And i told you also that a class 6 is the best solution.
If class4 is good enought?Yes, but the manufacture is more important.
So, a good class 4 (better class 6) is good enought for any smartphone.
Like Elia said, there is ABSOLUTELY no point in putting a class 10 card in a phone. Frankly speaking, even class 6 is kinda faster than needed. If you're going to use it for music and videos, even up to 1080p, a class 4 is more than enough in terms of speed. Unless you need to copy things there from your PC really fast.
Better to spend your money on more space - or better brand, than speed class you won't really use.

Upgraded to a class 10 because price wise i figured why not. I spent $32 for a 32gb class 10. Not too bad when a class 4 32gb cost almost the same lol
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
it really depends on what youre using it for. if its playback of files and videos, class 4 is fine.
however, if you want to record videos at 1080p (bitrate of 18mbps ~ 2.25mb/s) and still snap 6mp snaps (~2-3mb each), then you would want a hgiher speed. with a class 4 card, it would limit you to ~1 photo per second while filming, with a class 10 card, you can bump that up to ~4 photos per second while filming.
it also comes into play with burst shot, the faster the speed of the card, the more photos you can save directly to the card instead of onto your internal memory.
class 10 is also useful for those who use apps to sd.
