The real reason behind pathetic weak Samsung signal - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

It's because it's SAMSUNG PEOPLE.
No one will admit if anyone has any experience with any Samsung device they should know compare an HTC or iphone or moto photon signal to any SPRINT SAMSUNG PHONE ITS NOT SPRINT.
It's the Samsung software or hardware that's been glitched since day one since the first epic
They all have weak signal u can compare a photon which is Motorola to this galaxy nexus
Galaxy s2, galaxy s3 any Samsung, WEAK SIGNAL PHONES, and not one person realizes this with comparing the experience of device to Device on the same network
. How can u get 5 constant bars on a photon or 2 or 3 on HTC evo or sprint I phone in the same area, but always 1 bar on Samsung phones All on the same network. ITS SAMSUNG SKIMPIN OUT ON THERE BUILD QUALITY whether hardware or software related, it pisses me off they persistently ROLL OUT brand new Devices all year and waist good phones cause they can't build a stronger signal phone.
So forget about complaining about signal issues it won't change until they figure the real reason out

Same here, I have good signal all the time (even when my country have ****ty networks, I'm always on full signal).

My signal has been rock solid everywhere I have been for the last 7 months. :good:

The writing in the OP is an absolute trainwreck.

It's Sprint. Sprint sucks. No problems here on VZW CDMA, even w/o having the JB radios.

My friend has the Sprint iPhone (the forbidden device) and it's super slow even when maxed.

I also have to disagree with this. My GSM Nexus on T-Mobile has been rock solid. GPS lock in about 3 to 5 seconds and never a drop call and data speed has been great. We all know the first T-959 Vibrants had GPS issues but I sent mine in and Samsung fixed it. I wonder if it has to do with location? Here in Chicago my friends who are still on Sprint always complain about dropped calls and loss of network. And they are all using a mix of phones from different mafs.

A lot of it also is how the phone handles the signal display. Some phones display a higher signal then others as like a placebo. 5 bars on a moto RAZR and 3 on my gnex and mine still wins in speed tests.

They don't. You could have 5 bars and 500k people on the same tower as you and you'll get better service with 1 bar and 50k people on the tower.

i have a huge issue. the nex wont hold 4g in my house. period. drops to 3g all the time. i have a thunderbolt that got constant 4g (strong enough to tether with) in a known verizon dead zone. you explain that

I figured by now that people, especially those who start threads complaining about signal would know better then to base it off of bars!!!!!!!
Thanks for your informative well constructed break down of why Samsung sucks because another phone showed more bars.

Co-worker Pantech Breakout catching 4G signals better than my Gnex?

So, an older gentlemen I work with just picked up a Pantech Breakout from VZW - FREE after mail in rebate. He had absolutely no idea how to interact with device so I decided to give him a hand. I was actually pretty impressed with this Android 2.3.3 budget buy but I knew how vastly superior my Galaxy Nexus was compared to his. When I was showing him side by side some of the differences between GB and ICS, I noticed he had 2 bars of 4G and I only had two bars of 3G. I double checked to make sure CDMA/LTE was selected and gave it reboot.....NOTHING.
What a joke. Thoughts?
Its just telling you it has a better signal. According to VZW the Nexus just more accurately displays it.

This is incorrect.
The signal strength displayed in settings for most phones don't show LTE - Nexus does, so you won't be looking at the same thing.
Also @OP, please stop comparing bars, the only thing it represents is that 1 bar is worse than 2 bars to its own kind that is also using the same skin.

You beat me to it. . Basically you must make sure you are comparing apples to apples. You should use the db measurement for signal strength and not bars. You can not currently compare the GNex 4g signal to any other phone because ICS is the on version that can show your 4g signal in db. All previous versions lie.
The issue the OP had with not being able to lock on a 4g signal is a different matter. As the previous poster has stated, the pantech may not have had a 4g signal. Speed test may shed light on this. Personally I have not experienced that yet so maybe an issue with just his phone? If not then perhaps I have not noticed it when it happened to me. I'll try to monitor it more. I sit near the edge of a 4g signal so at home I'm always on wifi. It takes way to much juice to stay locked into 4g at home but it does stay locked. I can kill the battery in about 4 hours near the rear of my house with a mostly idle phone in 4g. I have to monitor it more when I'm not at home.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
Oh yeah Anand Tech is definitely comparing apples to apples.. The Bionic is one of the worst phones in locking in and staying on a 4G signal.. There is a reason why the Bionic and GN was delayed. Crappy radios!
The GN would be the best phone out if it wasn't for its signal issues. I hate to be sound like the glass is half empty but it is a shame one must tweak the radio for a better signal. I'm still hoping that the GN is software correctable . I really like what the phone has to offer in regards to development. Only time will tell, good luck GN users!

Basically most phones with carrier/manufacturer involved skins will make it linger and display the 4G icon even when its cutting in/out. Mostly because people will freak out if their connection is changing all the time. The handoff between LTE and CDMA is really slow, so they just make it show 4G expecting it to come back to 4G soon when it drops.
The Nexus is showing your actual connection with no sugar coating.

Just to support a fellow Gnex owner. I had a sony x10 and yeah, it definitely pulled in a signal much better than my Gnex.
you cant compare motorola radios to samsung. Moto makes the best radio on a phone with the exception of blackberry while samsung makes one of the worst. But i find that samsung has improved since the captivate. This is the only thing i really missed about my Atrix.
Combination of 3 things here.
1) The signal displayed on the Galaxy Nexus is the actual signal strength, whereas the RAZR likes to be generous with holding onto signal bars and over-display your actual strength.
2) On the Galaxy Nexus, when connected to LTE, the signal bars show your actual LTE signal strength (as reported by the phone settings). The RAZR will show your 3G signal strength in bars, even when connected to LTE. The best way to compare signals between the two is look at the Settings > About phone > Status, and compare specific dBm's.
3) The RAZR (and most Moto phones, honestly) just have better radio hardware. They blow Samsung out of the water.
do you have any connectivity issues? dropped calls? low data speeds?
if not then why do you even care how many bars you have? would you be happier if it always displayed full bars no matter what??
Different manufacturers use different algorithm to determine the graphical representation of signal strength in dbm. The actual performance is what matters.
If you do have problems then it might be your radio. What radio are you using right now?

Why does my Signal suck?

Hi,
I own a VZW Galaxy Nexus, I'm not as phone savvy as I use to be and I can't for the life of me figure out/ find and reputable sources about why this phones signal sucks so terribly bad. Presently in my house I can rarely send texts and my calls will drop due to lost signal. I live in PA a few miles from Chambersburg/ Waynesboro (for those who may know the area). When I go back to MD I have no problems pretty much. I'd like to chalk it up to just where I live but I feel like theres another reason.
I've got Android Revolution HD not the 4.1.0 one (downloading now) I have the one prior. It works great, very smooth, no random reboots unless Im playing music, using the GPS, and charging it (which is odd...). I've read a couple different things about PRL one being that it can screw up your 4G and the other being that its no big deal. I have yet to do it because honestly I still don't believe it will make a difference.
What I am looking for is some confirmation so I can stop beating my head against a wall when I'm trying to send a text. Even over wifi I can't send one (idk if you can but I figure it shouldnt hurt it). I'm sort of missing my HTC Droid Inc 1...too bad the screen got smashed.
No one has a answer for me?
Patience young padiwan... someone will reply shortly.
I did notice something though, when my modem when completely herp derp and I had it shut off down stairs I got better reception then I do upstairs in my room with my PC : /
Edit: no idea if this means much but checking signal strength and it was at -100 dBm 1asu then went to -93 dBm 2asu,
Is your baseband I515.10? If so that's probably why. I have had two Verizon gnex, one with I515.10 and one with I515.9....
After talking to many people on here it seems that people that had a phone that shipped with I515.10 (including myself) have pretty frequent signal drop. Whereas the people that have I515.9 (what my first one was), do not.
It's a shame, but there isn't really much you can do about it other than call and complain that it is a well documented problem, and hope they send you a better one.
It's frustrating for sure, but I still wouldn't trade this device for any other.
Also, forcing the PRL CAN ruin your sim card, but it's not like it's a guarantee. As far as I know though, there isn't really any benefit in taking the risk and trying since the device auto updates PRL.

just as a reference, texts rely on cell signal, so if you dont have cell service but have wifi, texts wont send/receive.
called them and it turns out i'm on the very edge of two distant Cell towers one at 5miles and another at 7miles. Biggest issue is the terrain because I like in Southern PA there are a lot of mountains and hills which interfere. The Tech rep also mentioned something about the time of year going into play because of the amount of water in the surrounding area which he got from an engineer @ VZW.
In all honesty it sounds like they were feeding you a load of crap. Not that there's no truth to what they say, but if you had a different phone that worked in your home, but your galaxy nexus is not working? Then what the verizon representative was saying would not be aplicable.

You can confirm this based on using an app called OpenSignal (free from the market). One of the tabs in the app is "Map" and will show your current location, as well as the location of the tower your phone is connected to, with a red line between the two.

I guess it's different where ever you are. I have a device on both phones and there are times my note gets better service and there are times my Verizon gets better service.
Beyond that. I don't think you would see much of a difference if you rooted the bad boy.
A lot of Verizon owners have complained about the Verizon logo on the home button but that's water under the bridge as far as I'm concerned.

Probably a typical xda answer, but 'it depends' on where you will be using your phone. Poke around the Verizon GN2 forum (I assume you posted the same question there) and see how people like it. You might also want to base your decision on how active the AT&T and Verizon GN2 forums are if you plan to root/install a custom ROM.
Have you seen much difference between at&t and verizon connection indoors (both cellular and 3g). Also how abuot voice clarity? People claim that verizon has better reception indoors (due to lower spectrum) but i'm curious what you are seeing with your phones. I'm tempted to switch to at&t (from verizon) but bit concern that voice quality will suffer as will reception when I'm indoors (I live and work in the city; and while boston is not new york; it also isn't the plains of iowa).

I can't say which one has an edge. I'd almost always chose at&t here cause you can browse and be on the phone at the same time where as Verizon if you aren't on 4g you can't do it without a htc.
I definitely use Verizon more for the phone calls and I think their 4g is more accessible.
It's an even split for me.
If it helps. I believe I've had more dropped calls with at&t but that's common with them.
As far as Indoors.. I don't see Verizon being better or worse in that department. That too depends on where you are I believe.

Verizon note 2 doesn't have wireless charging functionality. Also b home button has Verizon logo. From what I read from Verizon forum boot loader is also locked and latest update will brick your phone if you have custom software.
I'd go with ATT note 2 if I were you. That's my 2 cents

To check your best coverage at home, work, relatives, got to the market and download the 4g,cdma,lte,gsm,wifi coverage maps app from Sensorly. You enter the address and you can see the coverage of the carriers you want.
Verizon also puts more bloatware on your phones than AT&T. Having had their Droids in the past, the locked bootloaders on Verizon are a huge pain. You have to put off updating until the exploit is found.

If I were you I'd get the AT&T version simply for the fact that of you have coverage your data will not be slow. With Verizon that's not always guaranteed. In many instances I've seen my HSPA+ pull faster speeds than Verizon's LTE. Photo is case and point. Then there's also the matter of root accessibility and that hideous logo on the home button.

Pisspoor radios on S3

Apparently, now "everyone knows" that the hardware radios on the S3 are crap.
This information was not readily available when I originally was comparing it to the other options out there when looking to move on from my Evo. I would have never bought what is essentially a wifi-only mini-tablet (when at home) if I had known how bad it was. And I know I could have returned it but I didn't realize how crappy the radios were until I needed to use my cell frequently from my home for both calls and internet.
Anyhoo... really disappointed with this phone. The Evo radio kicks this things a**. Never had the inability to call out of my home...
Maybe dump it on ebay... looks like they go there for more than I paid...

Call sprint and complain. I did and now have a free airave. Not the ideal solution but my coverage is fine everywhere but my house :-|
The S3 radios are really good for me. I also had the Epic Touch and Evo LTE and their radios suck especially the Epic Touch.
I have the best reception I have ever had with any android phone. Might be they are upgrading your area with new LTE network. I had 2 to 3 weeks of terrible service when they upgraded here.
I had an og epic, an og Evo, a Galaxy Nexus and by far the S3 is the best.

Guess someone didnt get the memo that they are doing a nationwide network upgrade and backhaul
I like to break stuff!
Cool post, please do sell your phone and give all glory to HTC. Goodbye! :crying:
It's usually ROM-based. I used CM10 on my S3 and whenever it got LTE it would just switch to 1x for some reason.
But then I flashed a TW ROM and I got constant LTE
Haha I've also had the best reception and reliability with the gs3

They have been doing network vision improvements in my area. My service has gotten a lot better from when I bought my phone.
I went from have 2-3 bars to full signal inside my house.

Apparently most people disagree with you. Either you got a bad phone or somethings going on in your area. Most of us (including me) are really happy with the phone, and there haven't been any mass uprising of angry SIII owners complaining about reception. In my case I live in a really low signal area for Sprint. I've gotten 0 to 2 bars on my last 2 phones, (HTC Touch Pro 2, Samsung Epic Slider). I get 0 to 2 bars on my SIII. Virtually no dropped calls even with 0 bars.
In the other hand, you clearly came here to dis on Samsung. Mission accomplished.

He must be using the terms "everyone" and "knows" extremely loosely - it is as impossible to speak for everyone without talking to them first as it is to know something that isn't true

I have found the Qualcomm radios and GPS in the SG3 to be vastly superior to all my previous android phones. Started out with a Samsung Moment, then had a HTC EVO 4G, and finally a Samsung Epic Touch. This phones radios are the best - not your typical Sammy GPS and Radios.

Doing a side by side comparison, the S3 has a much more reliable radio than the LTEvo. Sitting next to each other, I had 4G all day, while she was lucky to get 4G for 10 minutes the entire day.

The fact that the OP has not returned to this thread and other posts he has made since November leads one to believe he is just Trolling. He doesn't seem to care what others have to say or respond to his post. He has a similar post about radio and signal from back in November and has yet to acknowledge the reply in that one.

My S3 gets way better reception than my Epic 4G did. I do not even need the Airave in my house any more. Not sure who your ":everybody" is but as suggested maybe your phone is bad. You should try reflashing the modem or something.
So does HOW the rom report the signal value affect performance? I'm just curious because I've used stock TW, unofficial AOKP, and CM10.1 roms and Open Signal reports good voice reception and poor data while I'm at work and I wouldnt be able to access anything involving the internet (pandora, basic web surfing, etc). This weekend I flashed the latest pacman rom and Open Signal is reporting OK/Good mobile data reception and I've been running pandora for the last 3 hours with no problems. I dont think sprint is doing any work in the area that would suddenly cause things to change like this and my signal status being reported by the phone is still hovering around the -100dBm mark as usual. Any thoughts?
I can also agree that the s3 has great reception, I got hit by the nemo blizzard and everyone that was at my house for the two days of no power my phone was the only one with service.

I actually agree with op, I believe the radio sucks for phone calls anyway
