System edits - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So, I was planning on editing my system files to remap home to camera and turn off the capacitive buttons. I just wanted to know if a full wipe or format system will reset the keys back to normal. If not, do I have to manually edit the keys back to rest them

Back up the file you have to edit on the sd card. Put it back to undo your changes. Could always reflash Ur rom or restore a nandroid as well

What file do I chose when doing a nandroid restore?

When I boot into recovery, chose restore, hit nandroid restore it will give me one option to select with the file Hxxxxxxxxx. When I select it it gives me 2 options to chose from, BSxxxxxxxxx and another folder starting with a date (2011xxxxx). Do I flash them both or one of them?
Well you can choose either other, the first says like data, recovery, ect, the things that were backed up. The other seems like a folder you renamed, or a clockwork recovery, which you should not backup.

Here are the SS, I would imagine the I need to chose the last one. I put them in order but you can see the file name on top of the SS.
I do not have a clockwork recovery, this is all out of Amon.
I think one of them might just be the wimax keys now that I think about it based on the size of the file but I was wanting to be sure...
Restore the one with the letters in it. The other one is just your RSA keys. That's odd... did you choose to back them up separately or did it put them in separate folders?

Yes I backed them up seperatly. That's what I was told to do by someone...Should I have done it all in one shot? I could always delete my last back up and do a new one with the wimax in it.

No, you are fine, I have a seperate backup of my RSA keys. If you ever lose your Keys due to a bad flash, you wont need to reload the entire ROM. If you are ever unsure of which to restore, just restore the one that has a file called Data in it, and was backed up around the time you remember making the backup.

You should make a separate backup of the rsa keys 1 time, then copy it to your computer, forbidding you lose your keys, then you can copy it back. Everything else, you can backup in one shot.
Got it, thank you both.

Another question,
When you do a nandroid backup, do you select the wimax option with it? I have backed it up to my computer already but I was going to delete my last backup and do a fresh one with the way my set up is now.
When do a back up, wimax, by default, is not checked.

Well if you have a backup, you don't have to create another one. If you had to restore it, you would just need to put it on the sdcard from the computer.
One more question, I think, when doing a backup, do you just backup the default settings or.do you chose any other, like SD partition, android_secure, etc...
Thanks again.

just open your comp.
1. copy everything on the sd.
2. then inssert the new sd on your device and format it
3. **formaatting on comps will not guarantee the stability so do it on your phone
4. then just copy everything from the old to the new one.
**EVEN if you had apps on the SD card, it will still be transferred.
most apps installed on the sd are located @ mount/sdcard/data/<here> or mount/sdcard/Android/data/<here>
Tnx to all of you.

How to create nandroid back up?
Sent from my GT-S5360
download the link which i hav posted earlier then it to copy to sd not in any folder
power off your phone
1. reboot in recovery by powering down, then
power back on holding vol up, vol down, and
power at the same time. This will boot you into
stock recovery.
2. using volume down, highlight 'apply
sdcard:update.zip' and select by using the menu
button (or where it would be).
3. you should now be in cwm recovery. Depending
on which one you are using, the text will either be
red or cyan in color. highlight 'backup/restore'
using volume keys and select with POWER button.
4. select backup
The back up will start, and will take around 5-10
minutes to complete (depending on how much
stuff you have in /data)
5. Once it is done, it will go back to the main cwm
menu. Select 'reboot phone now' with power
button.
now your backup is copied to clockworkmod folder in sd
take care about minimum space free is 500mb either it shouldnt complete
do same in restore at last highlight restore then it should take time
hey press thanks

nice. last question.. do the data of apps installed in sd card must be on sd card or it is included in recovery?, and any1 found any bug of doin' this?
please answer. then this will be closed
Ok. Here's my question.
I've already created back up on skin 1980. Soon. I will change my rom. If i don't like the rom, i will restore the nandroid backup. Should the data of the apps installed in my sd card and backed up on my nandroid backup must be on sd card?

factory reset question

If I do a factory reset from the menu in settings will that replace my build.prop file or will it remain the same In case your wondering I was editing what I thought was my build.prop but it was my backup.
Maybe we should start a library of stock files for occasions like this. I'm sure a generic build.prop will work fine to get it back to A100.

All that does is delete /data, /system remains the same, so no, it won't touch your build.prop. A nandroid restore or flash over will replace it.
Edit: wrong wording, it doesn't delete /data, just what's in it, the partition remains there. Not sure if it formats or just deletes the files there.
Tapatalked from my A100 - Flex Reaper RF1.
Okay thanks. I did find an old.build prop and it did not help. Thanks again

I think CWM screwed me

I should be able to flash a backup I made with CWM recovery in CWM recovery, correct? Or would I have to adb push it?
I moved to 4.2.1 but not a fan of it at this point and want to go back using a backup (4.1.2) I made with CWM, but it won't flash. So at this point I'm trying to save my photos, notes, texts, and my titanium backup of apps and do a complete wipe using wugs (unroot/relock then reroot/unlock). Or should I be able to get away with just doing a format on my sdcard/system/cache/data and data/media (options in CWM)? Since going to 4.2.1 I have also lost a significant amount of free space.
BTW I have tried TWRP before and went back because I didn't like the layout but damn if your recovery can't even handle its own backups what the hell is it good for? TWRP here I come again.
you know it moves everything to a folder called 0 on the internal memory, right...?
A lot of the following is probably overkill but what I'd do is...
1. Backup everything I wanted to keep when in Android 4.2.1 onto my PC (Nandroid backups, photos, music, etc.)
2. Flash the factory 4.1.2 image
3. Boot up to make sure it's working
4. Restore nandroid in CWM
Chances are there are easier ways of doing this but I'd be happy knowing that is 100% right then have the potential for it going wrong

Bud I have tried to flash it out of every folder I have access to in CWM Recovery
The folder's I have tried, after choosing install zip from sdcard:
sdcard/0/clockworkmod/backup/ - 4 backups in here but wont flash any of them - says no files found when I try to flash one
sdcard/clockworkmod/backup/ - can actually see 2 backups in here (ones I don't want, just wanted to see where they were placed in 4.2)
sdcard/legacy/ - no files found
But stupid me did just realize the CWM backups I have been creating aren't zips? So I need to figure out how to get to sdcard/clockworkmod/backup and place my backup folders here. So I will be able to see them when I choose Backup and Restore - Restore
CWM can't see the backups in the '0' folder, it stores them on /data/media (or is it /media/data??) so unless you have a file manager with root access you won't get them back

My my my you are the man. It looks like it is data/media/clockworkmod/backups.
I am going to try to Restore my latest 4.1.2 nandroid tonight, after I had a chance to back every thing up, but I'm guessing it's going to keep the current file structure though.
The best way to upgrade to 4.2.1 from 4.1.2 is
1.Flash all factory images from fastboot apart from recovery,@ recovery step flash twrp 2.3.3.0 and you are all set to no '/0' bug,
2. Downgrade to 4.1.2 ? Flash factory images of 4.1.2 , just keep the recovery as twrp 2.3.3.0, at present it is the best possible recovery for maguro for handling the '/0' bug , it doesnot delete the layout file.
And restoring nandroids in between the versions can make every file very clumsy, take some time and flash stock images to get rid of that.

After downgrading you will still have the /0/ folder with all data. So many apps wont recognize that the backups are there available to be restored. You can just point to the "new" backup location that now exists in the /0/ directory.
Example: Titanium backup will tell you there is no restore data unless you go into preference and point it to the right folder in /0/.
Example 2: Nova launcher will not see the backups. Manually move them via Root explorer or similar from the /0/data/ to the /data/
..and so on.
I guess I will be flashing the factory image then.
1. Backup everything I need/want (photos, notes, sms, and grab latest copy of titanium backup folder)
2. Format system/cache/sdcard just because
3. fastboot - factory image (4.1.2)
4. Phone should still be unlocked/rooted (on current bootloader/radios correct?)
5. fastboot - twrp
5. Restore everything else
Or use Wugs to take back to stock, then fastboot unlock, root, add CWM recovery might be the easier way at this point. Restore nandroid and everything else. Then add TWRP and remove CWM.
Sorry trying to talk this out with you guys and wrap my head around what I am in for. I know it's not hard, just frustrating to think I could possibly lose some things.

Not to be bossy but the latest version of TWRP seems to do a better job handling user folder /0. Its also touchscreen and [email protected]$$ so there is really no comparison....:highfive:
Yea I tried it, thought I was more comfortable with CWM and this bit me in the ass, so TWRP it is when I get everything straightened out

Not able to restore nandroid back up

Hi there,
I was running a RR rom and got a msg about an update for my ROM. So i thought i would try it out. I made a full nandroid back up and after that updated my ROM. After the update my homebutton didnt work anymore. So i thought, lets just restore my back up again. I did a fully factory wipe, i flashed TWRP again on my OP3 because for some reason after the factory wipe i got the Cynogen recovery mode. So i put back TWRP, put my back up on my phone from my laptop, but when i went to "restore" nothing was there. I tried to move my back up from the "sdcard" directory to the root directory but i got an error which didnt specify what the problem was.
Can any1 help me restore my OP3 again?
so when u went to TWRP -> Restore, there was not backup found to restore? but when u check ur phone through file manager its there?

Thats correct. When i go in the file manager, i see the backup in the sdcard directory along side the TWRP directory. I tried to move it with the file manager, but it gave me an error which was not specefied.

ok now i extracted all the files from the tar files, but what is the next step? I tried putting them on my OP3, but that does nothing. My OP3 still doesnt see a back up.
Another thing is something i saw is that in TWRP, when i shut down my OP3, TWRP says that there is no OS installed. Is that normal?
No that is not normal, the extraction is there so u can reinstall things, I will have to take a look at it again, do u know what all partitions u had backed up and did u move the backup location?
Lately backup in twrp recovery sucks.
Yesterday, i want to test another rom. So i wipe cache/dalvik & backup in twrp. I select all except rom img (3gb) and cache (zero). Try the new rom. Does not work for me. So wipe all except sd card & restore my backup.
Error..
I use only twrp 3.0.4.1, so it can not be a conflict in different twrp's versions. It's not the first time....
If you wipe youre phone, including sd card, go to recovery, backup and choose the smallest size file to backup. Recovery creates youre backup folder in TWRP directory. After that you can erase the that backup.
I flashed back oxygen (OMG I forgot how ugly oxygen was) last version, so I got a working phone again but ofc without all my media. I just find it weird that I make a full backup (I had everything checked) and I can't do anything with it.
I did full factory reset, so maybe that's the reason my OS got deleted aswell. What partition has the OS installed?
When I reboot my OP3, I get a msg saying that dm-verity has not started in enforcingmode and may not work properly. What does that mean?
