I'm thinking about upgrading from Galaxy S2 to HOX... - HTC One X

I was planning to buy a new smartphone to replace my Galaxy S2 and thought I would get the HTC One X.
I am slightly put off by the horror stories that are flying around about very poor build quality, GPS problems, WiFi problems and probably the main reason, I heard that the HOX is having problems with some high end games!
The fact that the HOX uses the Tegra chip means surely it should handle any game thrown it's way, right?
I have heard that when playing some high end Tegra 3 games it often overheats and/or freezes or lags like hell. The only way to stop is to install a patch or some sort of driver upgrade, is this true?
Would love some info on how the HOX handles high end games as I play a lot of games on my phone.
Thanks guys!

1. There are 700,000 threads with the same start as this one. You didn't even need to search. Just read the first page.
2. Your list of nightmares are pretty much the exceptions. Not common at all.
3. If you think the phone has all these flaws, why bother?

These forums will always have tons of problem related threads, that's the nature of forums.
Mine is a launch day HT23 model and is issue free.
What games do you play, and I shall let you know how they perform.
Issues with games tend to be Gameloft games, they ain't supporting Tegra chipsets that well.
But games like GTA, Max Payne, dead trigger, mass effect, pro evo 2012, sonic, shadow gun etc all run great.
Only Gameloft game I own that runs properly is Modern Combat 3, I'm not sure why they haven't fixed the others yet. (But I haven't tried them all)

People who get normal products won't came up and shout, i get a good phone..
In contrary, many who get a abnormal phone probably came up here shouting..
Though, I had to admits that HOX has higher defective rate compared to others.
Just make sure you checked the phone before leaving the shop, you may find some guide here.

I've been lucky enough to not have ANY hardware problems with my One X at all. It seems like there have just been a lot of isolated incidents of hardware faults with the earlier batches that HTC sent out. By now, you'd be quite unlucky to run into any of these issues, but if you do get a One X, check that you don't have any of the hardware issues (which have been documented here on xda) before rooting it.
As for gaming, i've mainly played Dead Trigger, Osmos and a few other 2d games. So far, i haven't had ANY issues with any of those games. Dead Trigger looks particularly amazing though with all the special tegra 3 effects and it runs smoother than it does on my friend's S2. Actually, i also played Dark Meadow (a tegra 3 optimised game) which looked REALLY good and ran very very smoothly.
A lot of my friends have the S2. The biggest differences between the two devices will be the screen resolution, the speed of the One X is much greater in general too (especially on AOSP ROMs, but ESPECIALLY jelly bean). Also, the One X will probably be a slight decline in terms of battery life from the S2. However, i seem to get pretty similar (and GREAT) battery life on my One X compared to what a lot of my friends get on their S2 phones.
I hope that helps. Give a thanks if you found this useful!

Thanks guys,
Glad to hear it's just the early batches that had faults.
And as far as gaming goes the only Gameloft game I play is MC3 so that's cool
Think I'll bite the bullet and join the HOX club, it does seem like one hell of a decent phone!

Well, mine is a launch day model and issue free
after the 2.17 update to 4.0.4, home screen smoothness is the smoothest I've seen on non-JB devices.
Only slight jerk in frame rate for me is opening the app launcher, it doesn't happen every time but its due to the animation HTC have added were it loads up from the bottom and moves up the screen.

gameloft games for some reason are anti tegra, you can even see visible clipping issues in them and so they lag
the only heavy GL game that support tegra properly so far is The Drak Knight with full effects and good performance
their upcoming wild blood game should run well, since Tegra 3 has proven to run unreal engine games pretty well such in the Dark Meadow and Horn
Tegra 3 is a hot chip due to the 40nm process but one of the most stable chipsets i have ever messed with, much more stable than all my snapdragon devices, even at the hottest temps the device never freezes
as for the temps they are actually similar to the SGS2 and not worse
finally Tegra3 and the software for it has matured pretty well matured now and all the major issues were squashed
all other non GL games runs very good, THD games are amazing
you will have to root, install faux kernel and use the renovate gaming boost app to get the most out of this device for gaming (without sacrificing HTC sense)
Tons of info about gaming in my sig links

Galaxy S can play 720p rmvb,why iphone 4 & ipad can't?

Seems like some people managed to play 720p RMVB on Galaxy s.
IPAD/IPHONE4 has almost the same CPU with better GPU and option for overclock.
What is the reason that is preventing us from playing 480P???? Not good enough app or something else?

You've got something wrong here. The CPU is indeed virtually identical, however, the Galaxy S has the more powerful GPU (SGX540) whereas the iPad and iPhone 4 have to make due with the less powerful SGX 535 which delivers only about one third of the performance of the SGX540 (28m triangles/second on SGX535(iPad/iPhone4) vs. 90m triangles/second on SGX540 (Samsung Galaxy S))

If this isn't a troll, which I'm thinking it is, I'll answer properly.
The iPad/iPhone can't play anything (without jailbreaking) that apple doesn't allow....and there's not a lot that apple does allow!
Also the GPU on the iPad/iPhone4 is worse than on the Galaxy S. It's the model below the Galaxy's
Who doesn't Jailbreak a iphone lol and its not illegal to JB now as its been legalised in the USA, i sold my Galaxy S for the I4 and I wouldn't go back personally, by the time Android catches up on gaming there will be newer phones out.

It has never been illegal to jailbreak the iphone, so it can't possibly have been "legalised". The only thing that happened was that it was confirmed to be legal by federal regulators.
Besides, contrary to what you seem to believe, whatever they say in the US courts does not apply to the rest of the world. It may still be illegal in Whateveristan (or some other random country, like the UK for example)...
Yugh those iphone trolls on XDA are really annoying especially on on the android section. I mean i compared the iphone 4 vs galaxy and chose android because of the freedom of choice instead of buying something that is been defined and controlled.
Second just like the Galaxy S supporters say (including me) the iphone 4 has lower specs so if you want to f**k spec and sheet go find an accountant to do it with but keep those comments in this section to yourself regarding iphone 4.
Wtf iphone, jobs can't even say in correct english that he makes a phone with wich you can call.
Like Ipod, imac or Ipad.
No it is called mp3 player, personal Computer and Tablet english lesson from a dutch guy world doesn't get much weirder grrrrr.................

Mate, are you dumb or what?
I just posted a question. If it doesn't concern you, you don't have to read the thread. How the f*ck you decided my thread is trolling? If you're not interested in what your device is capable of, I don't understand what are you doing in this forum.
What does it matter what the device is capable of?
Capability and what is currently useable are completely different things, both the iphone 4 and the galaxy s are 'capable' of playing 1080p, its just that through hacking the iphone can now play 1080p video, whereas we are not there yet on the galaxy.
Can the iphone play half the file formats that we can? no, and that is far more important then 1080p video
The iphone could stream 2000p for all the difference it makes, what you are seeing on the screen is still the same
If you want to play 1080p on the galaxy s then feel free and make a video player that supports it...

Oh I see now, you really are dumb. You are thinking I'm saying that iPhone 4 is better than SGS in something.
Well, NO.
I used iPhone 4 as an example ONLY because it has the SAME CPU and slower GPU. If EVO or DROID X had the same hardware, I'd be using them as an example.
You say that there are no matter what are the capabilities and only matters what we can do at the moment? LOL. If Desire's owners were thinking like you they'd never get 720p recording with Froyo.
sigh................................................
The iphone and the galaxy have the SAME HARDWARE
that means the capabilities are the SAME
Capability = Potential
If the iphone 4 can play 9,000p videos and cook you breakfast with its cpu then so can the galaxy s, just a matter of time till it gets supported/hacked

All I'm worried about is that the next gen games won't work well with the Galaxy Nexus. These games look great, but with Apple and other companies (e.g Samsung) pushing mobile gaming, and the new mobile GPU's that are coming out, ours is already obsoleted and probably won't be good enough to play a lot of games in the future

From what I've seen, gaming on the "higher end" phones simply just add useless eye candy and don't effect overall game play at all. I love eye candy, don't get me wrong, but I don't fear that we'll be left out in the cold.
With Quad-Core not even out yet, I don't think we'll be seeing anything that requires a "Quad-Core or higher" for a long time.
I also just noticed how the software buttons rotate depending on orientation. Life's simple joy!
Forgive me for not being so knowledgeable on technology, but I would be mistaken in thinking that even if Quad-Core is released, most phones won't even be able to utilise it properly for a good year or two? And by the time they are put to good use, all our Galaxy Nexus contracts will be up and we'll be eligible for an upgrade and we'll be hopping on the newest Nexus?
So quad-core doesn't even matter for a while even if they are being released next year?
Back on topic the phone looks insanely smooth, even when you had all them games open it was silky! I'm loving it a lot, getting it tomorrow
could you test the kairosoft games? like game dev story and the others?
on honeycomb if you used mulittouch zooming all their apps crashed. kinda worried it may be the same with the GNex.
The screen is good but until the games are updated 'proper' we will not know how good performance can really be.

I read on another thread that Gameloft games will not work on the Nexus, is that true?

Exactly my thoughts. For example on mine Plants v. Zombies looks great and works great for a few minutes, then freezes when under heavy load (i.e. "Final Wave" pushes). It can't be the GPU or memory issues because other (just as graphically heavy- if not more so) games (like Tiki Golf 2) are perfect.
I just want to clarify how good that first game is?

[Q] T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 Gaming Performance???

Hey guys I'm a loyal T-Mobile USA user and decided to purchase the international version of the GS3 instead of our very own S4 edition due to the powerful Mali GPU. Since gaming is very important to me, I was wondering how the Adreno 225 performed when running games like Nova 3, Real Soccer 2012, Modern Combat 3, Mass Effect, etc.... Can anyone tell me if they notice any lag at all? What about 1080p flash content in the browser, YouTube? Let me know guys thanks!!!

I might also add that I tried the above games:
On Stock ROM PRE-Root
On Stock ROM Rooted
On Stock ROM Rooted with Bloat removed
All give the same results, I thought it was possibly due to either the root or bloat, but doesnt appear to be the case
Also, noticed that when I restored my nandroid, while the checksum matched, and the restore completed
A LOT of my settings were lost and some apps refused to run at all...so not sure what happened there....even tried clearing cache / dalvik and fixing perms

You know, for someone whose been a member since 2010 you're kinda acting like an ass right now. I figure after 168 post you would have learned to not disrespect people in their own threads and to not be a ****. Not everyone buys their "Top of the line" "High End" "Smartphone" to just make phone calls and send text messages. Why even own a "Smartphone" if that's all you do?
While it seems that he is indeed phishing, he asks a good question. Gaming is a big concern to a lot of the people(especially the younger members)on these boards. It's a legitimate question and if you don't think he's asking it in good faith(i.e. asking just to gloat) prove him wrong. Post videos of the US SGS III running these games with no lag. Post replies with your take on how the device handles games from your own experience. Don't just come in and start talking **** on someone.
These games and applications are out for our "High End" mobile devices to be played lag free while pushing the devices GPU to the limit. If our 600$+ High End Smartphone can't keep up with what's currently available now, what's it going to be like 6 months to a year from now?
It's unacceptable that people always push that same old mantra of "Buy a gaming PC, or a PS Vita, Or a Nintendo DS, or an Xbox 360, or a PS3 if you want to play games". That's total and utter BS. I'm sorry if some of the other members on these boards expect more out of their 600$+ Smartphone (Or just any Expensive High End device in general) than you do.
Awesome, good talk. I feel like we made a lot of progress there, and I'm very proud of you!
P.S. And remember to always have fun!
P.P.S Sorry for calling you a ****, it was mean and I feel bad now.

The reason why I was curious about the T-Mobile version of the galaxy S3 was because I was thinking of selling my international version since I'm stuck on Edge.......... Would rather just get TMobile a version with Hspa+ if the performance is largely the same.
yo! progressive vid plays great on the phone. plus the wife has been throwing hella games at it and it runs like buttah. Edge sucks. both the data speed and the shaving cream. get the TMOUS variant of the SGSIII... UHHHHHHHMERICAAAAAAAAAA F*** YEAH!

Please don't talk about warez on XDA!
which part is warez? stop getting trigger happy, op asked a legitimate question. op does the tilt work in other games? if yes might be an early bug. I read reviews and they not good tho.

Yeah, the tilting works on other games,i think it's a bug, hoping that the guys at gameloft will repair this, maybe get out a patch soon.In the meanwhille,i've allready finished 6 championships and the game is great, the graphics are good, the thing that bugs me about the game are the "post score" or different commercials that are always shown, but overall it's a great game .
Posted some screenshots bellow
Thanks mates..
Downloading.. 1.3 gB. It must be a good game.
P.s. Can I play it with a bt keyboard?
Don't know honestly,but i don't see why it would't work.

The framerate makes it unplayable for me at stock, it's just too much of a distraction.
I'm waiting on a gameloft update. (sigh)
However, with faux and game booster app it plays pretty good with a decent framerate , but still annoys me that it's still not the framerate it should be & not what iOS users get.
Stock users - I'd say not to bother yet, as the framerate is choppy hell.

For me tilting works in driving. But I don't like the way, difficult to play.
Actually the game looks far better on my new ipad (graphics)

Sorry, (in the nicest way possible) .... you must be blind if you think the framerate is ok .
Go have a look at the trailer on the play store, that's how it's supposed to run.
Everyone I've spoken to has mentioned the very poor framerate, even android police the other day mentioned it to be 'definitely choppy' in the pre-review.
It's not Tegra 3 compatible, not really.
It runs at terrible framerates on both my Nexus 7 & HOX.
It may work, but we have to wait on Gameloft for the fix.
This game doesn't even run completely smooth at all on base 2.05, faux kernel and game booster app - stock 1.29 has no chance.
......
Unless your using a U.S snapdragon S4 version, not sure how it runs on that HOX.

Probably man,i don't realy know what to say,i will compare it tomorow with my Ipad to see how it runs, but for me it's ok,i mean,i've noticed that all consumers lately want everything to be perfect, not realising that we are running on our phones games that are larger than NFS:Underground or NFS:Underground 2 which we played a few years back on the PC or PS and we were totaly satisfied about them, even if they weren't perfect.Probably that it isn't optimized for the Tegra 3,lately Gameloft didn't perfect theyr games and haven't worked as much as they did in the past on the games. But,in theyr defence,we did pay 1$ for it,i mean, lets be serious,we can't expect great things for a buck man.

Lol, that may be true for NFS, but the size of gameloft games are wayyyyy too big in size.
To think Torchlight is under 600mb for the PC, makes you wonder how a racing game for a phone could be 1.3gb. - ouch.
i don't think the price of an app is an excuse for poor coding - the game shouldn't have been released yet, not in its current state.
I've heard the SGS3 also has framerate issues with this game (just not and severe as most of GL games for Tegra3 devices) and that's operating on a year old GPU, so it shouldn't have optimisation issues - but even here, it does.
But, HOPEFULLY - they will release a fix soon, and not wait a month like they did for batman on Tegra 3.
Sadly, gameloft ain't like madfinger who will respond to you quickly and issue a fix quickly if it's their problem.

Yeah, unfortunaly i've sent an email to them regarding the accelerometer problems, sayd they will investigate the problem, but so far,nothing...i am not an expert programmer,i understand some codes, but i mean, how hard can an accelerometer problem be to solve it?
Luckly that i've got used with the touchscreen "virtual buttons",otherwise i wouldn't played this game.
As for the size of them,i maybe saying something stupid....but...aren't the guys at gameloft using Unity to make the graphics like the guys who made Dead Trigger?I tried like 1 or 2 years ago Unity and the graphics made with that program always use to much space.
Reached championship 9 so far .
Yeah, I think android police agreed with most of us.
Hopefully, gameloft will take note with some bad publicity & make a quick fix.
It definitely seems to be affecting all android devices.
Gameloft should definitely come with a disclaimer warning that it is optimized for iOS only.

Graphics And Performance
Even with the above foibles, Asphalt 7 could be a good game. The deal breaker for me is the overwhelming mediocrity of the graphics. Judging from the screenshots on the Play Store page, this should be a gorgeous game. Instead, it's just average. Even then, only on some devices. On the Nexus 7 the texture resolution is absolutely terrible. Everything in the environment looks muddy. The cars aren't bad, but there is noticeable aliasing along the edges.
I also looked at things on the Galaxy Nexus, and the textures were a little better. I was still not impressed with the overall fuzziness of the roads and buildings, though. The jaggies are not as prevalent here, possibly because the screen is smaller, and I can't see them as well. For whatever reason, performance is questionable on both devices. Both will get a spot of lag from time to time, and the Nexus 7 seems to have a lower frame rate The brightness also looks too high, making the game oddly washed-out. There are a few places that I could barely see where I was going because the gentle blue track markers blended in too well with the background. Turning my device's brightness down did nothing to fix this. I could also see distant objects drawing as I rocketed along. That should not happen on any modern device.
For 1.4GB of game data, I expected stunning graphics. I really feel like some of the smaller Need For Speed games look better than this. Asphalt 7 is not ugly, but it's just not pretty like the screenshots would lead you to believe.
Conclusion
On the surface, Asphalt 7 is a fine game. The controls are solid, and there are plenty of tracks and race types. I can even deal with the in-app purchases because they don't seem exploitative. This is essentially a $7 game that you can have for $0.99, so dropping a few dollars on better cars seems alright. The learning curve is steep, but not to a fault However, the requirement that you have internet access is beyond ridiculous. Things fall apart for me when it comes to visuals and performance. I'm just disappointed in how this game runs on the Nexus 7, and it's not terribly good on the Galaxy Nexus. Lag, low frame rates, and blurry graphics are not what I expect out of 1.4GB of game data. If this game was free, I'd definitely suggest you pick it up to try. As it stands, you could spend $0.99 if you like Asphalt racing games, but there's just nothing that special here.

Apart from it being one of the fastest devices on the face of the Earth, what are the advantages of having a THD phone like the One X? Well, free THD Games of course! And Beach Buggy Blitz by Vector Unit is just that!
The game got released on 7th September, and is developed by Vector Unit, the minds behind two of the most popular THD Games, Riptide GP, and Shine Runner.
Race you vehicle in an endless game, completing objectives, and earning coins along the way, which you can then spend on items like Cars, Characters, Items, and Gadgets.
Here are some screenshots of it I took:
The catch? Well there isn't one. Sure, you can make in app purchases and buy extra coins, but this isn't freemium or of the likes, you can fairly easily play the game through without any IAP.
And Lastly, what you've been waiting for.
The link, get Beach Buggy Blitz for FREE on the Play Store here:

The Beach Buggy Blitz game by Vector Unit is very nice. It is more a pick up and play like game, small, enjoyable and fun. It is a checkpoint based game, where you ride until you reach a checkpoint. This means it has a very old-school like gameplay, which is very nice in my opinion. The graphics is good, like all tegra optimized games and is running pretty smooth. You buy power-ups as you do more races, because you need coins to do so.
Edit: Also this game is a lot like the style of temple run brave, now that I think of it. Also did I mention that this is fun...

This game worries me.
Ok, not in the same way that the impending collapse of the international financial system worries me, nor in a similar manner to the worry one is encouraged to have in the face of global terrorism but it does still worry me.
Sure, its pretty but then that's to be expected. We already know what the Vector Unit engine is capable of because well, we've seen all this before. This isn't what worries me by the way.
What worries me is that I drive for about 90 secs, racing to beat an impossible timer, collecting coins that are worth almost nothing, to buy powerups that make little difference, to fulfill objectives with no rewards. I'm doing it all just for the sake of doing it. Again and again I drive around 3 or 4 versions of the same tracks to end up 90 odd seconds later with an extra 40 or 50 coins to save towards a powerup costing 400 that does nothing to help me and then costs a further 2000 to upgrade.
Is that fun? Maybe for about an hour but then as I get into it I realise the horrible truth and any fun I have had is tainted by a uncomfortable sensation of feeling cold and a bit ripped off. True, I never paid for the game but that's a bloody hour of my life. An hour I've given them. An hour I'll never get back.
I'm going outside now. I may be sometime.....

Camera tilt works perfect here too. But this game makes me want to set my phone on fire...
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
I've been playing this in shortish bursts off and on for a few days, at first it was quite frustrating getting used to the tilt controls which is weird, as I got the hang of Riptide GP immediately.
The other thing which was a pain was the jerkiness, especially compared to Riptide GP
I saved up some coins and the power ups didn't feel as though they were making much of a difference. I'd upgraded each of them by at least one...
But then I upgraded the buggy and it changed my perception of the game. Yes it is still a bit jerky, but now it is not as frustrating.
I think that i'll carry on playing this for a little while longer
Oh yeah, I'm running this on my Vodafone uk branded 1.29 still, so I imagine for those on 2.17 or CM10 mode or ARHD mode, it would be like a blur to me!!
Venom with stock kernel runs this game with NO issues!
