Chameleon Experience Thus Far - Nexus 7 Themes and Apps

So for those of you who have pre-ordered / funded the kickstarter, what are your opinions so far?
Personally, I'm pretty torn about it right now. I really love the idea and I really want to use it all the time, but nothing works that great on it, yet. I'm not trying to sound harsh because I understand it's still in BETA, I just can't use it as a daily launcher. While load times have improved it still hogs up resources substantially more than any other launcher. They're slowly getting new widgets which is nice, but mine frequently crash. I constantly have connection problems with Facebook and sometimes they all just go blank. So, I'm curious if you all are having similar experiences. With the widget SDK being released soon I'm looking forward to 3rd party widgets.

It's ok. I'm using it as my daily and widgets crash like there's no tomorrow. It has a long way to go to be a functional launcher, imo.
I'm using it as my daily launcher right now.

Ya... I'm just using it as daily cause km bored with stock launcher right now. It's not stable enough for a real daily driver

Its not bad but also not great imo right now. First had problems with the app drawer getting jumbled when swiping and now with the latest update my weather and Facebook Widgets just sit there with circles rotating until I remove and add the widget again. Don't really use as a daily or anything. I will give it a test though everytime it updates. Still needs some work before releasing in this next month

Needs a lot more work, which is happening as per the devs release notes. Would wait for the public build + x weeks before buying it: my advice.

Not sure what problems he's having with launcherpro onEK02, it's running fine on mine but I could swear the options for themes had more than just a selection for what icons to use - which doesn't work. I can manually change them on the home screen though. Other than that everything is perfect.
I highly doubt development for launcherpro has stopped so the "just use go launcher" statement is a bit much. I've used it and love it but the general consensus is it drains the battery pretty quick. Other than that it's great but most people like to get that extra edge on battery life.
Development on LPP has been dead for almost a year. Users are pretty disappointed, and some flat out upset, judging by the hundreds of posts at the dev's last update feed (about gmail notifications being broken).
I have yet to make the jump because the paid version suits me so well, a bit better thsn GO/ADW.
With that said what problems are you experiencing with LPP and ek02? I'm running this without issues.
Launcher Pro has always worked well for me. I picked up ADW on the 10¢ sale, but haven't played with it much yet. But, my question is what problems everyone is having with Launcher Pro. I've used it for years across all my devices, including a Nook Color and it has always been great.

LAGGY

Hi, I sold my SGS2 and bought the One X thinking it would be at least a smooth as the SGS2.
But its not! I've installed the latest Leedroid without sense, but still in general the phone is laggy.
Especially when scrolling in apps and stuff.
Also Go Luancher EX, wich was the fastest on my SGS2 is so laggy, especially when scrolling in widgets like the calendar widget.
What's going on here, isn't this supposed to be a beast of a phone?!
It's not the phone it's the apps that are not optimised for ics. Had the same problem with the Nexus.
You will find that things improve over the next few months as developers update their apps and Google tweak ics.
I had the s2 too which was great but love the hox so much more.

Hmm ok.
I was actually thinking of selling it, and to go for the SGS3 when it comes out, but the problem could be the same on that phone then?
I tried it from shop and it was fast like a hellhound. Don't blame your phone if you are using custom ROM. It's new technology. Be patient. Okay I can't test it yet in long scale because it looks like my friend has signed my parcel. I gave my keys when I left the apartment. When weekend is over, I can tell my experience with this phone.
So long my gf is all I got...

I agree with the previous comments, my one x had to be reset twice to factory because it had slowed down painfully slow in the first few days of ownership.
I've now only installed the apps that have been upgraded (check reviews for ics problems).
Since I've been more careful with the apps my phone has been flying with no slow downs in the last week.
I find it weird apps that are not running can affect the phone so badly, cest la vi.
Back up your files (even though you shouldn't lose them) and reset, you will be happy with the phone again

How are you lagging on LeeDroid? It's smooth as butter for me.

I swithed over to Apex launcher today. Took most of the day to get it all setup the way I like it. Apex runs very very smooth!!! Wigets on every screen.
Stock was sooooo laggy it was driving me crazy. You do lose alot of the sense wigets which sucks but I spend the day downloading and finding some good ones.
This should work for me if or until HTC fixes the issue.

Well Leedroid is fast, but I guess the problem is ICS. I mean the scrolling lag in many apps, including the widgets in my previous favo launcher: go launcher ex.
Nova is much smoother indeed, but the icons on homescreen are misaligned.
I mean they are to high, and at the bottom there's to much open space.
Is that the same for everybody?

Is MIUI any good on the Galaxy Nexus?

I loved MIUI on the HTC Desire, it was fast, stable and just worked.
However i have never heard many good things about it on the Galaxy Nexus, a lot of people say its slow and laggy. from watching most YouTube videos it does appear to be. What are people experiences with it?
The reason i ask is the ViciousMIUI V4.1 Jelly Bean Edition is supposed to be pretty fast and stable. Atleast in this video, however some comments say ". But compared to the stock Jelly Bean ROM (Vicious, Bugless, etc.) it is a lot slower and less fluid than JB. I was took forever to load and seemed kind of buggy to me."
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CqraqIUenOU
Just wondering if people think its worth going from stock jellybean to MIUI, i do like that everything on my phone just works at the moment, however i do miss MIUI.
Nandroid and try it then let us know.
I actually have tried MIUI on the Gnex. ICS as well as Jellybean. It is working ok, but as you say it's pretty laggy.
So if u love miui I would just try if I were you and then draw you're own conclusions. I have never tried it for a long time, so it's perfectly possible that when the rom settles it will solve the lagging issues.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda app-developers app
I have only heard negative things from the ones who has tried MIUI. Buggy and laggy sums it up pretty much.
Heard good things used it for awhile and no problems with it. Minimal lag to me and I didn't have any bugs that bothered me.

Tried it and hated it
mainly because I don't like the UI, but it was pretty smooth and stable if that's what you're looking for.
Not recomended on the GNex...!!!
I loved MIUI on my Galaxy S i9000, in fact it was my favorite ROM on the SGS. but would not recommend it on the GNex...too laggy and you have more feature rich ROMs out there.
mmm
mmm
heard it's pretty and neat,
but kinda laggy atm in JB
OP: Why don't you just try it yourself: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31621751
I did end up giving it ago myself, the build on miui.com was pretty laggy and was not totally in English.
The ViciousMIUI V4.1 build was a lot more responsive and had been totally translated from what i could see, it did'nt appear to be as fast as the stock jelly bean is on the nexus, however it did look really nice!
The double unlock screen is annoying though, its a shame you cant just disable the lock screen on MIUI if you have a swipe to unlock pattern set.
At this moment in time i'm just going to stick with the stock Jellybean rom, MIUI just doesn't perform like it did back in the 2.3 days sadly. Although it looks even more awesome and I do miss it after using it now!

Yep I agree... I was a serious MIUI fan back in my Nexus S days but MIUI on Galaxy Nexus makes me feel really bad about it. I downloaded it every week, flashed, then went back to CM. Until the last few versions (especially 2.9.14) that I feel it's getting good enough to be my daily driver :fingers-crossed:
Its nice. The newer releases are better and better. The only complaint I have is when an app is requesting root permission I have to click the dialog box like 6 times. No joke. That alone was a deal breaker for me

I feel in a few months it could be there, it does appear a lot better now, I think stock Jellybean really has spoiled me.
I cant help but want the Mi 2 phone Xiomi are going to release, i would expect MIUI to work perfectly on it. However i dont really want to get rid of the Nexus, plus i dont really need a new phone too!
Fingers crossed it keeps improving!

That annoyed me too actually, however i could live with it as im not running apps that need root all the time. I would really like to just have the lock pattern to unlock my phone and not some fancy lock screen too, that's probably my only other deal breaker.

First Android phone that I've preferred stock launcher...

As title states...every Android I've had (and I've had a bunch), first thing I do is install Nova Launcher. I did that with my Note 2 immediately and kept it that way for a couple days without ever playing with touchwiz. However, a few days ago I figured I'd give TW a try and found that I actually prefer it to Nova! I was shocked, but pleased nonetheless. I find it (for the first time) every bit as smooth as Nova and I like the idea of Pagebuddy and the s pen utility icons that pop up in the notification tray. I have also found that the stock launcher seems to use less system resources than Nova...at least from what I can see by available ram.
Anyone else experience the above, or have I lost my mind?...haha

My exact same experience from nova prime to the default launcher. Having the S calendar widgets is a bonus too

i just hate tw icons.....and the placement of the app icon! they should allow us to at least chnage those childish looking icons!

I agree wholeheartedly. I'm still using Touchmywiz after a full two weeks now. that's amazing. Me changing themes all the time with Go Launcher or Nova got boring...every theme had at least one ICON or something I didn't like to sticking with stock launcher is kind of a nice. Especially since it's so smooth.

I respect all of your opinions here. I hear what you guys are saying and understand it at a logical level. But, no. Just, no. Every skinned version of Android should be nuked and destroyed. Every carrier or OEM that tries to add to the Android experience should be forced to spend time for crimes against humanity.
As soon as mine gets here on Tuesday: Root and flash to the closest thing to AOSP.

I certainly have. I just don't own one yet. Had a day on the Verizon one yesterday. Used the T-Mobile for a few hours the day before. My personal AT&T one is coming in the mail. And my original Note is running CM10.
I have to agree, the TW launcher and Note 2 software are spot on. I love CM/AOSP but the stock rom is going to give CM/AOSP a run for the money. Now, if CM/AOSP can integrate the S-Pen features (note, memo, calendar and gestures) then will definitely be moving over, but for now stock (with root) is staying put. Well done Samsung!
Keeping in mind we are all sharing opinions and everyone is very velcome to voice there own. Mine is a torn one. Im very aware of the sweetness custom launchers and roms offer. My conflict is the TW launcher has so much proprietary and necessary fuction in direct relation to the phones core features I feel I woild be missing out on some potential with anything else loaded. I have been useing a modified TW launcher since day one and feel its the best experience. Considering all I have done is removed all bloat and added all the features everyone else has. Then wave around the middle finger to whomever is responsible for ATT borking it in the first place.
As its been mentioned before. If a CM or other shows up with all the TW apps and SPen compatible I would dive right in. Considering Samsung had a good lockdown on anything document related to the chipset I dont see that hapening anytime soon. The CM team has already stated they are not happy about samsungs lockdown and have suggested they might drop it all together to focus on other phones. :banghead:

Stock was great and all, but this is the first phone i actually ran a different launcher on it instead of stock. I was just way too annoyed about the icon size and the space between them. Got nova launcher to fix that.

Says the brainwashed "AOSP OR NOTHING IT PWNZ0RZ" Nazi. Seriously of you're gonna load CM and ultimately kill one of the 3 main selling points (spen) why the hell would you even consider the note 2? Seems like the Droid DNA, where running CM/AOSP wouldn't cost you a single feature, would be a MUCH better choice for you.
As for CM: drop the Note 2. I don't care as ill never use it. All CM does to the note 2 is remove features. Want a "stock" look? Get apex or Nova launcher. Looks like CM and still gives you full spen support.
The note 2 is *****ing fast. It has killer battery life. Those were two main selling points of flashing cm/aosp. What do you gain by flashing cm/aosp? You lose features and can almost exactly replicate the look via a launcher. Its simply not needed on the note 2.

Totally agree, bone stock here. Not even rooted. Haven't found a need to. The device is aces. Samsung nailed it.

The main reason I flashed a ROM was multi-view. Once the AT&T version gets the multi-view I will probably jump to a rooted stock ROM. The other thing I would miss on stock is the ability to choose the notification toggles.
I am running Nova just because I like a tighter icon layout. Right now I'm on 5x8 (including the dock). Samsung loves adding in little features, I wonder why choosing more layouts wasn't one of the things they added to such a large phone.
I loved AOKP on the S II. Sorely missed a stable build with decent battery life on the One X. But, the Note is a wholly different stock experience.
I chose the Note for the TouchWiz stuff and S-Pen. It really isn't that much bigger than the S III (my coworkers S III + case is bigger than my naked Note). I knew I wanted stuff like smart stay and smart alert. All the stuff I would lose on AOSP bases. Even multi view is coming to TouchWiz JB update to the S II. Samsung has this software down, really brought their A-Game. If I stretch I can only think of two things I would have wanted stock: more freedom in row/column in the launcher, and ability to select and order the notification toggles. Nothing like the laundry list I can come up with about Sense 4+.

second thought: after a couple of days using this launcher and paying close attention to the battery usage, I have to say that it does not drain as much as i thought. I guess it depends on what homepack you download/use.
This launcher really makes my phone a lot better looking, with very little time and energy. And the customization freedom is huge!

Its alot closer to SSL Launcher but in a clean more user friendly interface. Can't wait for it to be stable now. I put the Chrome theme on it that was shared earlier and its sick! Trying to replicate the Chrome theme on other launchers like Apex and Nova using Multi-Live Wallpaper and its becoming even more tedious. This makes things alot easier when creating a theme for mycolorscreen.
Corrupt colors and textures.. I was seeing alpha channel instead with some textures.
Beautiful and innovative home screen, high battery+ram usage, boring app drawner
