Keyboard Discussion - Galaxy Note 10.1 Accessories

Creating this thread as a general discussion area for keyboards on the galaxy note 10.1.
I'll start:
I am looking for a keyboard case that not only is able to lay flat while my tablet is propped up, but also is able to lay flat while my tablet is laying flat as well. This setup would give me the ability to type up documents or post on forums for example, when that is the sole task at hand, with the tablet propped up much like a laptop. On the flip side, it would allow me to take great notes in the classroom setting while both apparatus are flat (I am not keen on making quick sketchs while my tablet is positioned in front of me like an easel).
Is anyone aware of a case/keyboard combo or separate keyboard and case that is capable of this versatility which will work well for the note 10.1?

This one looks to be exactly what I need. However, I've yet to find any indication that this will also fit the Note.
http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Keyboard-Folding-Leather-Samsung%C2%AE/dp/B005O74J7O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1346533541&sr=8-2&keywords=note+10.1+keyboard

Anything that fits the Tab 10.1 will be WAY too small for the Note unless it's a highly flexible "universal fit" case (e.g. stretches to fit).
I have a ZAGGFolio for the original 10.1 - it's way too small for the Note.

Here is one like that for the note 10.1: http://www.amazon.com/CrazyOnDigita...=2025&creative=165953&creativeASIN=B008L5EVVA
Not released yet but you can order it now

I've been using the Kensington K39383US Universal KeyFolio Pro Case with Removable Keyboard but the only issue with it is that it comes with 2 sets of corners, one big (for big tabs) and one small for smaller tab (like the Note 10.1) But the smaller corner holder does not hat a opneing for the S-Pen, so I had to resort to doing surgery on it and it fits fine, works well and I'm able to take out the S-Pen.
I like it since the keyboard can be detached and in doing so, the Tablet can be position in numerous viewing positions.
There is another one model K39519US that looks like it already has an opening in the corner holder, but I still think it needs to be surgically worked on. lol

Same one I was gonna suggest. I like the way the case slants the keyboard and the Note.

I don't have a keyboard / case combo, but I came from the iPad and I have the apple wireless keyboard and It works better than expected. The play, pause, volume buttons all work. There is even a button for apple's mission control on its Mac's and it actually works to bring up the task manager on to note which I thought was pretty cool. No need for me to spend another $50-$70 on a keyboard. I know it's not what the OP reauested but the thread title drew my attention here so I came to read and I wanted to give my feedback on my experience with the apple Bluetooth keyboard.
I edited the post to include a link to the keyboard. You can find it on amazon and best buy as well. I bought mines at best buy.

Thanks for sharing your findings! Could you provide a link to the said keyboard?
I created the thread in hopes of stimulating some keyboard discussion in general as there hasn't been a place to do this yet for this tablet. No intentions of hogging the thread to myself

MX5500
By the way, if anyone is interested to know, the Logitech MX5500 also works brilliantly with the Note. No problems with 2 Blue tooth devices (keyboard and mouse) connected simultaneously.

How's the included keyboard with these cases? I'm pretty critical when it comes to keyboards and would go for a better keyboard while giving up the convenience. Currently happy with Logitech Android bluetooth keyboard with only the minor quirks of browser key not launching browser (can be fixed by renaming chrome apk to browser.apk and having to disable auto capatilization otherwise first auto-capitalized letter will appear twice so you end up with "AA". May just get a small sling with two compartments and a $9 compact Amazon (Arkon) travel stand.

Kensington
You guys convinced me to get the Kensington keyboard! It looks great and having a keyboard all the time is a huge plus for me.
One question: does the stylus fit in the stylus holder of the Kensington case?

These are nice and all but isn't it a pain to take the tablet out when you want to use it as a tablet? I mean I already have a laptop and I can thumb type on this thing hella fast.

A missed call on your tablet??!! NIce keyboard, looks different in your screenies in comparison to Amazon's pictures

Could anyone comment on whether this kensington keyboard has a flat configuration in addition to the propped up tablet configuration? Definitely interested in it.

Takes me 10 seconds max to remove the note from the case. And just as quick putting it back in the case. The soft rubber corners peel back easily, alowing for quick removal of the tablet.

Stylus for Handwritten Notes

Anyone know if the Xoom supports using a stylus? If yes, which stylus and app do you recommend?
Thanks!!
i made one at my house. ill write up a how to.
OK so you take the tip and the back off a old pen so it looks like a straw.

Then you take ESD foam or conductive foam and wrap wire around it.
Put the wire into the pen and pull it all the way till you get a nice tip of foam sticking out.
Then jsut wrap the wire so you figres will touch it and bam a working Stylus.
Its not the best looking but with time it can be better.
Im sure a metal pen would work the best. Ill have to find one around here and try.
That's a pretty sweet home made stylus
But i've been looking for a fine tipped stylus to use with drawing apps. With my finger, I can never tell exactly where my lines will go and I'm assuming it would be the same with your solution and all of the rubber tipped stylus I've seen.
Can't someone make like a silicon tip or something so its like pen or a sharpened pencil?

The way these touch screens work you cant have a "fine" tip, tried it. I was sad to, cause i was hoping i could use this on the go then send it to my desktop and use my Wacom.
I Bought One That Works Well
This is the one I purchased on Friday. It works very well. Now I just need to find a great note taking (hand written notes and possibly text input) app and I’m all set.
http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Stylus-iPhone-Tablet-AMM01US/dp/B003ZSHKIY
Targus sells them in different colors besides black.
An app I found the other day was "MaplePaint" https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mapleworks&feature=search_result
I am wanting to get a stylus to try out with it. Not sure though, as it seems to not be quite sensitive enough for real handwriting. And, when putting my hand down on the screen like on a piece of paper it messes with it a bit.
I'd be curious to know how it goes when used with a stylus.
-Loc
I picked up a stylus this afternoon. The Targus one.
http://www.targus.com/us/productdet...el1=products&cp=&bannertxt=Stylus For Tablets
The stylus is great, and does a great job doing what it does. Feedback is good. But, I worry about the sensitivity of the digitizer on the XOOM. The lettering is not very accurate in any drawing app I try and things like dots (periods, the dots on 'i' or 'j') do not show up at all.
I check out videos on youtube for iPad apps that do drawing or note taking functions and these do not seem to have any issues. I wonder if it is the digitizer or just the apps not being optimized....
Anyway, stylus gets a thumbs up.
-Loc
I have noticed that if you are using any sort of screen protector it reduces the sensitivity of the stylus.
Not using a screen protector. No need with Gorilla Glass.

where is the best stylus?
just ordered this:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16858995181
hope it works for taking notes in class..
I just ordered an O-stylus ... http://ostylus.com/ ... I gather there is a bit of a "knack" to it ... but seems to be the best for "seeing what you are doing" in a drawing/note taking scenario. I'll let you know what I think
You could also go with this one http://www.dealextreme.com/p/aluminum-alloy-touchpad-stylus-pen-for-apple-ipad-ipad-2-black-57797 . I just ordered one and it looks well built. The last one I had didn't have the taper like this one has which is ideal for not risking scratching the screen. Also it's a great price!

I wouldn't discount BT keyboards. I have the Zagg Flex and it's still running on the original charge after 7 weeks. It's rated to run 2.5 to 3 months per charge. There are many affordable BT keyboards that have decent battery life. Here's a picture of mine.

Its rare and might be too expensive for your tastes since they stopped all production of them.
Only bet is to get it from here, but you'll have to wait.

BT keyboards aren't bad either, but I got the Wedge Keyboard. On Amazon, it ranges at $40 and if you go to BB, you can price match it. It works very well and makes writing on the go easier and safer rather than lagging around an expensive notebook. Don't even have to get a stand as the cover becomes the stand itself. Like you, I wanted the keyboard dock , but it was out of my price range and was too exorbitant. Don't buy the Wedge from Staples as their prices are lame.
I still don't regret it one bit though.
Used it while carpooling in the passenger's seat [community college for now for prereqs.} and despite the road and turns, it held stable onto the top of the dashboard. The only time the tablet began to slide off [since I use the Bobjgear case made of similar material.} was when the car hit a bump on another day. Very stable. Keyboard has excellent build quality.
If you want to charge it, have it upside down.

what i like : many shortcut key like copy /paste . brightness, search , music control (compatible with poweramp )! etc, key is nice to type
what i dislike : doesn't make me feel it's very sturdy, cant use it with a case

Review of Logitech Android BT keyboard with case-stand - w/pics!!!

This is a review of Logitech Tablet bluetooth keyboard intended for use with Android phones and tablets, as well as Windows 8/RT: http://www.logitech.com/en-us/product/tablet-keyboard-android-win8-rt?crid=1242
It probably shouldn't come as a surprise that a company such as Logitech, which is known for some of the best keyboards, is offering a wireless keyboard specific for Android devices. But I was still very pleasantly surprised when I opened a package from Logitech with their Tablet keyboard. They really put a lot of thought into this design, and offered a number of unique features.
Let me get one thing off my chest. Yes, the first thing you notice when taking this keyboard out of the box is the weight. This is not a rechargeable keyboard, it runs on 4x AAA batteries (which btw were included!). So you should expect an additional weight. Along with it's case I weighted it to be about 21.6 oz (610g), where without a case it was down to 13.8 oz (390g). The dimensions of this keyboard are 29mm x 13mm and thickness of 9mm with an exception of 15mm around the thicker edge with batteries. Yes, it's not light weight - but it's a VERY solid built chiclet style keyboard with full size keys. Even so it has a small footprint, it felt no different than typing on my laptop or regular computer keyboard. Every key has a decent travel with a very good feedback, and spaced very comfortable for a long time typing without hand fatigue. The shape of the design makes it naturally angled. Also, I was very pleased with a generous size of backspace, enter, shift and space bar keys. Even smaller arrow keys felt comfortable.
Of course, the main intent of my review was to see how it's going to work with Note 2 or any other Android device. I tested it with both Note 2 and my Nexus 7 tablet. The pair up was super fast, click on "connect" button to see bluetooth light blinking, scan your phone or tablet, and enter the uniquely generated code. Within seconds it was paired up and communicating with either of the devices. Typing any key on the keyboard brought up Google search right away. Three basic Android OS function keys - home, return, menu are accessible with a dedicated keys on the keyboard with instantaneous response. I was able to control volume up/down (Function key combination with top row keys), play/pause and next/previous, bring up default music app, schedule app, and web browser. One thing I would have wish for was "mute" button. Basically, I found this keyboard to be functioning as both input device and multimedia controller.
Typically, my review would be complete, but there is another bonus piece of this keyboard that took it to the next level - the case. Obviously it serves a purpose as a protective case when keyboard is not in use where you slide it right in. It offers a hard plastic material with a nice soft finish outside for a better grip when you carrying it, and a soft felted lining inside to protect the keyboard. The case itself flips open, held by two magnetic locks, to turn into a stand that can accommodate any smart phone or tablet in portrait or landscape position. It's actually makes a very solid and sturdy stand. Very impressive design! Once you done, flip it back into a case and store the keyboard inside.
Overall, I think it's one of the best and most comfortable portable keyboard I tested so far. With a bonus of clever case design that turns into a very solid stand, full integration with Android OS and capability to use it with Windows 8/RT (if you have those tablets), and a reasonable price (on Amazon you can get it for $55) - I would definitely recommend it to anybody who does a lot of typing on your phone or a tablet and don't want any compromises.

I know they advertise it for Android/Win8, and I can't personally verify it with my laptop because I have a problem with built-in bluetooth and just disabled it in there. Thanks for that,,, the keyboard is a little hard to come by in the UK.. but looks like it might be worth a shot, as i'm looking for 1 keyboard to carry about and work with multiple devices (including my note2)
Is it comfortable to type on Note II, given it's smaller screen size?
I'm looking into buying Note II to use as a diary/notebook for studies. How do you think it will fare with such tasks with this keyboard?
wife just got one of these about a week ago for her Samsung series 7 slate, and she is loving it.

People usually get Note 2 as a compromise between smarphone and tablet, thus a name "phablet". If you are getting N2 with a main purpose of diary/notebook, I would go with a tablet like Nexus 7 or Note 8 to keep it portable. But if you want more real estate than a typical <5" smartphone and don't want to carry both phone and a tablet - Note 2 is your weapon of choice.
Do you experience errors when typing too quickly or when pressing Caps Lock?

I have this keyboard and love it very much with any and all of my android tablets and phones. I've used it with all of them and haven't had a single issue. The build quality is terrific, and I would buy another one if this one broke tomorrow.
Agree, what sets this keyboard ahead of everything else I reviewed us a solid built quality. Having rechargeable battery would have been nice and I hope it will be implemented in their next gen sometime down the road.

For me that's not a big issue as I use rechargeable aaa 's in it. Two hours on the charger and I'm good to go. Don't know what the battery life is compared to alkaline, as I've not had to recharge the batts since I got it.

New keyboard from logitech for the new tab 4, will it work?

Guys it seems logitech has a new keyboard for the Tab 4 on pre order. The size differences between this and the 10.1 2014 is very similar according to phonearena. What do you think?

looks awesome but seems like it covers spen hole
cant understand why logitech hates note 10.1 2014
I don't mind the spen being covered as long as the rest functions. I can use the pen outside of the device as long as the rest all fits and works.. I will get it as soon as it's available through Amazon. So I can return it incase it doesn't fit

Looks good... Give us a review if you don't mind!
Looks awesome! Just now purchased the note 10.1 but cannot seem to find sny good keyboard case for it. Oddly enough.

I'm also extremely interested in knowing if it's a good fit. I'm not too worried about the s pen.

That is sexy. Maybe even a little modification will help with the SPen.
It would also cover up the camera flash.
Ok, I purchased the Logitech tab 4 keyboard from BB yesterday. It does cover the SPen, therefore I put the SPen in the elastic attachment. Camera is covered, doesn't really bother me, I'm not going to take pictures with my 2014 Note. It doesn't fit perfectly (off ~0.5cm), but it works. I'm going to try a modification to the case (w/o damaging it), to see if I can get a tighter fit. Keyboard works well, however, I am still evaluating this purchase, I will try to keep you posted, once I have implemented mods.
Peace and blessings,
Azeke
Hey, would you be willing to show some pics of it inside the case so we can see whats off?
Perhaps some small pieces of foam will help to wedge the tablet in better....
Thank you!

If SPen and Camera is covered -this case can not be called suitable for our Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. Too bad !
Unfortunately, the Logitech Tab 4 keyboard didn't work well for me. Besides the prior information that previous posters provided (i.e. camera covered, etc.) The USB was covered, the 2014 Note also didn't fit well, even with a mod it wouldn't fit on the top clips like the Tab 4, therefore I returned the item. If you have a Tab 4 and require a keyboard this is the one, I saw someone at BB purchasing the Tab 4 and placing it into the Logitech keyboard and it looked really nice, of course YMMV.

Azeke

Samsung really screwed us all in the rear with the 2014 note....damn
There is a new Beilkin QODE Universal Keyboard Case F5L170 which is supposed to fit the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition.

Solved the problem. I returned my 10.1 Note and upgraded to the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (on sale @ Costco, BB price match) and bought the Logitech 12.2 Keyboard (also on sale) . I thought it would be too heavy and large, au contraire.
Happy Father's Day...thanks Honey for the BB gift card.
Peace and blessings,
Azeke
Three months of use this keyboard (aliexpress.com/item/Ultra-Slim-Black-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Case-Dock-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10-1-2014-Edition/1578657151.html). Very satisfied. During this time it took to charge the battery keyboard only 2 times. Here's my post with the Russian-speaking forum 4pda.ru (4pda.ru/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=521485&view=findpost&p=30253614)

In the less than 1 year time span, Samsung released 3 new tablet lines..how will companies know which to produce cases for that will make them profits? But yes I agree..Samsung screwed over everyone that bought this device.nothing but problems

I got one of these off eBay. It's a great idea but the quality just isn't there. A few of the keys are already falling off. I would love to pay $50+ for something like this but a bit better built.

Let's talk about the S Pen on the Tab S4

What is going on with it? I bought the Tab S3 last week and the Tab S4 this week, was going to return the S3 and keep the S4, but I like the S3 a lot and it really is great for reading textbooks and PDFs on, where if you try that on the S4 it would actually be smaller due to how much would have to be cut off to display the PDF. Anyways, back on topic, the new version of the SPen. To me it's worse in every way imaginable from last years.
Pros:
-fatter
Cons:
Everything else:
-The tip is rounder
-The materials feel cheaper
-The button is harder to find on it
-It looks a lot cheaper.
Luckily it functions the same, but I don't know why they went this route. Like their type cover this year, it just gives off a rushed vibe. Thankfully they're both EMR and as such can be used interchangeably. Though I wished both would include an eraser option. I have a really old Samsung alternative SPen for the Note Pro that does have the eraser on it and it still works as it should with all the apps that support it.
Personally I love this stylus. While I haven't used a S3 stylus for much (just testing in stores) I really do like this one.
Pros
- Roundness to it gives it a better feel to a real pen.
- Still EMR
- Light Weight (im sure the other ones are similar)
Cons
- Yes button is a little hard to find. Would of been nicer a little closer to the tip I'd think
- It looks cheap and a little rough around the mid section silver band
which one looks worse/cheaper: the white or black s-pen?
Must it be charged, and if so how? If not how does it work?

No charging required.
It's tech is the same to that of the past notes and the S3.

To be honest, I'll be a lot happier if Samsung provides the Bluetooth S-Pen here as well, and they'll charge when you attach it to the tablet side (placement like surface pens)...
Well, I can dream, right?
Dreaming aside, if I remember correctly, the first time that we were able to grab Bluetooth S-pen capability is by checking Tab S4 system dump?
So, does that mean that somehow, we can get Bluetooth S-pen capability in the future on this device?

If I remember the samsung press event, supposedly that bluetooth feature should work with ANY android device, not just Samsung. I think it was at the tail end of the S Pen features section. So, yes it should work, but the charging would be the only hurdle. Which you could be on to something. A lot of people would use this tablet in portrait mode and if it only requires 30seconds to charge the supercapacitor, then using the magnets near the pogo pin pads should do the trick.
If you want a clip on the pen, take a look at the Space Pen clip on Amazon. Fits perfectly.
I lost my pen New ones are £50. I feel this is a bit of a ripoff but may be down to no stock anywhere! Anyway does anyone know if the Notes s9 s pen works on the Tab S4. Can't find any details anywhere. Cheers

I am using my old Note 4 pen and seems all functions work fine, so would guess the Note 9 will also work
The Note 5 S pen works as well.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072N31S7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 have gone as low as $27 here in the US. Maybe you can find something locally but it is a good substitute for the S Pen until you can afford a new one.
I'm using my spare spen from my Note 7 in a 3D printed "case", no problems with it so far

That is correct the S-Pen is powered by the electromagnetic grid beneath the display. However the SGTS4's S-Pen doesn't have bluetooth features like the Note 9.
The best I use so far, better than the iPad one
