Let's talk about the S Pen on the Tab S4 - Samsung Galaxy Tab S4 Guides, News, & Discussion

What is going on with it? I bought the Tab S3 last week and the Tab S4 this week, was going to return the S3 and keep the S4, but I like the S3 a lot and it really is great for reading textbooks and PDFs on, where if you try that on the S4 it would actually be smaller due to how much would have to be cut off to display the PDF. Anyways, back on topic, the new version of the SPen. To me it's worse in every way imaginable from last years.
Pros:
-fatter
Cons:
Everything else:
-The tip is rounder
-The materials feel cheaper
-The button is harder to find on it
-It looks a lot cheaper.
Luckily it functions the same, but I don't know why they went this route. Like their type cover this year, it just gives off a rushed vibe. Thankfully they're both EMR and as such can be used interchangeably. Though I wished both would include an eraser option. I have a really old Samsung alternative SPen for the Note Pro that does have the eraser on it and it still works as it should with all the apps that support it.

Personally I love this stylus. While I haven't used a S3 stylus for much (just testing in stores) I really do like this one.
Pros
- Roundness to it gives it a better feel to a real pen.
- Still EMR
- Light Weight (im sure the other ones are similar)
Cons
- Yes button is a little hard to find. Would of been nicer a little closer to the tip I'd think
- It looks cheap and a little rough around the mid section silver band

which one looks worse/cheaper: the white or black s-pen?

Must it be charged, and if so how? If not how does it work?

To be honest, I'll be a lot happier if Samsung provides the Bluetooth S-Pen here as well, and they'll charge when you attach it to the tablet side (placement like surface pens)...
Well, I can dream, right?
Dreaming aside, if I remember correctly, the first time that we were able to grab Bluetooth S-pen capability is by checking Tab S4 system dump?
So, does that mean that somehow, we can get Bluetooth S-pen capability in the future on this device?

If I remember the samsung press event, supposedly that bluetooth feature should work with ANY android device, not just Samsung. I think it was at the tail end of the S Pen features section. So, yes it should work, but the charging would be the only hurdle. Which you could be on to something. A lot of people would use this tablet in portrait mode and if it only requires 30seconds to charge the supercapacitor, then using the magnets near the pogo pin pads should do the trick.

If you want a clip on the pen, take a look at the Space Pen clip on Amazon. Fits perfectly.

I lost my pen New ones are £50. I feel this is a bit of a ripoff but may be down to no stock anywhere! Anyway does anyone know if the Notes s9 s pen works on the Tab S4. Can't find any details anywhere. Cheers

I am using my old Note 4 pen and seems all functions work fine, so would guess the Note 9 will also work

The Note 5 S pen works as well.

https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B072N31S7C/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 have gone as low as $27 here in the US. Maybe you can find something locally but it is a good substitute for the S Pen until you can afford a new one.

I'm using my spare spen from my Note 7 in a 3D printed "case", no problems with it so far

That is correct the S-Pen is powered by the electromagnetic grid beneath the display. However the SGTS4's S-Pen doesn't have bluetooth features like the Note 9.

The best I use so far, better than the iPad one

Stylus?

I saw the C-Pen and thought it was pretty cool but I don't want to pay $30 for something I won't use very often. Does anyone (who has a stylus) have any recommendations for this particular device? I notice the touch area needs to be much smaller than it did on my previous devices. Pretty awesome!

That one seems to want to be a pen first and a stylus second. Not only is the stylus tip HUGE, it's stuck on the same end as the clip, which means it won't be very nice to hold.

Between this and the samsung one, I'd rather spend the extra $12 on the samsung.
Yea, I have the MediaDevil MagicWand and it works great for my Tablet, and decently enough for the GS3, but I'm looking for something with a smaller tip. That Samsung one looks perfect!

I too am looking for one with a smaller tip, but I'm also looking for one that doesn't cost $30. It's useful, but for me, it's more of a minor convenience to have.

I've always been wary of the Jot Pen just because it looks like it might be more prone to causing scratching than the other nub capacitive pens. How's your experience with it in that regard?
I just ordered a universal stylus for 6$ and it comes with a free skin from amazon.
Don't spend too much on one, u can make your own with some electricaly conductive styrafoam (used to ship computer chips). Just hollow out a pen and stuff it in there.

So I ordered the Galasy S III C-Pen and unfortunately it isn't working out that well. I have a Zagg InvisibleSHIELD installed and I guess the semi tackiness of the protector doesn't let the pen move around as smoothly as it should. It works great for normal pointing & whatnot, but if you're drawing or something, it isn't too precise. If you don't have a screen protector then you probably don't have to worry about it.
Also another big negative (my fault for not doing some research first I guess) is that it doesn't work with any other of my devices. Tried it on my Acer Iconia a500 tablet & Galaxy Nexus and it doesn't work at all. I figured "Replacement for using fingers on your tablet or smartphone touchscreen" meant I could use it on other devices as well. Think I'm just going to get my money back on it. :/
With the glass on this phone I don't think it should be a problem at all.

I have the Samsung c-pen and it works great since I don't have a screen protector. It also costs 20.00 on Amazon.

I have been using the C-pen. I got it off Amazon for $22. I don't use a screen protector, my phone is "naked", and to be honest, I really like it, but it's hit and miss. And what I don't think people realize is that it depends on the software using the stylus. This was something I didn't expect. I thought it would perform roughly the same on all apps. Using Adobe Reader to make freehand notes, I would find dead spots, where the pen just wouldn't work. But then if I touched the screen, then went back to that spot, it would work again.
The two best apps I have found, and the two use the most, (both work quite well with the C-pen) are SketchBook Mobile, and Genial 2. SBM is for drawing, and Genial is for note taking. The C-pen had bad reviews, but I have been happy with it. This is where I bought mine. http://www.amazon.com/Samsung-ETC-S10CSEGSTA-Galaxy-III-Pen/dp/B0089VO7HY. I have had buyers remorse at times, but not enough to send it back.
It looks really nice, and I love the way it feels. I think the only other 2 options I would consider are HandStylus, and Jot. Anything else is really just another variation of the same thing. But, even with any stylus, your really magical experience will come in the app you are using it on. The nice part about the other two is if you ever change phones, or have a tablet, you can use your stylus on it. The C-pen only works with your GS3.

Recommend a stylus for the s3?

I've been using that popular cheap $5 stylus with the round rubber tip, it finally broke and the tip is loose.
I mainly use the stylus for swype text input, and general navigation, no drawing. What would be the ideal stylus for the galaxy s3? I'd like to be able to use it on the soft menu and back buttons too. I like a soft tip, not hard like the C pen (which i saw in the review does not work on the soft menu buttons).
Has anyone used the iFaraday stylus ( http://www.ifaraday.com/ )? That seems like my first choice right now, it would be nice to know if it works on the soft menu buttons.

I just bought a cheap three pack of stylus' off Amazon for ~$1 w/ free shipping. Being plastic, they're much lighter than my old aluminum Boxwave pen, but they're functionally equivalent and nice enough in quality (especially for only ONE DOLLAR )
Not worth overpaying for these things, IMO.

Yep that's the one i have. It does work great for being so cheap, slides on the screen pretty easily. You really need to tap hard on the soft buttons for it to work which was kind of a hassle. Also my tip became loose after a month.
The iFaraday has a cloth tip and requires very little pressure (according to the website). So it should slide on the screen a little better, and since it operates with light pressure, i'm guessing it should work on the soft menu buttons. It's $12 + shipping and theres a 30 day money back guarantee which isn't too bad.

That'd be impossible, since the S3 doesn't have a Wacom digitizer built into the display like the Galaxy Note's do. Maybe the S4 will have it.

Yes I know it doesnt have the digitizer but they said they will be releasing a variant that uses the capacitive Technology. I don't know if it was just a marketing fluke. But I will try to find the video when I get home.

The C pen works partially on other devices with highly sensitivity screens like the galaxy s3. It works on the note if you press hard. Which shows theres no special screen technology unlike the note and its stylus.

Keyboard Discussion

Creating this thread as a general discussion area for keyboards on the galaxy note 10.1.
I'll start:
I am looking for a keyboard case that not only is able to lay flat while my tablet is propped up, but also is able to lay flat while my tablet is laying flat as well. This setup would give me the ability to type up documents or post on forums for example, when that is the sole task at hand, with the tablet propped up much like a laptop. On the flip side, it would allow me to take great notes in the classroom setting while both apparatus are flat (I am not keen on making quick sketchs while my tablet is positioned in front of me like an easel).
Is anyone aware of a case/keyboard combo or separate keyboard and case that is capable of this versatility which will work well for the note 10.1?
This one looks to be exactly what I need. However, I've yet to find any indication that this will also fit the Note.
http://www.amazon.com/Bluetooth-Keyboard-Folding-Leather-Samsung%C2%AE/dp/B005O74J7O/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1346533541&sr=8-2&keywords=note+10.1+keyboard
Anything that fits the Tab 10.1 will be WAY too small for the Note unless it's a highly flexible "universal fit" case (e.g. stretches to fit).
I have a ZAGGFolio for the original 10.1 - it's way too small for the Note.

Not released yet but you can order it now
I've been using the Kensington K39383US Universal KeyFolio Pro Case with Removable Keyboard but the only issue with it is that it comes with 2 sets of corners, one big (for big tabs) and one small for smaller tab (like the Note 10.1) But the smaller corner holder does not hat a opneing for the S-Pen, so I had to resort to doing surgery on it and it fits fine, works well and I'm able to take out the S-Pen.
I like it since the keyboard can be detached and in doing so, the Tablet can be position in numerous viewing positions.
There is another one model K39519US that looks like it already has an opening in the corner holder, but I still think it needs to be surgically worked on. lol

I don't have a keyboard / case combo, but I came from the iPad and I have the apple wireless keyboard and It works better than expected. The play, pause, volume buttons all work. There is even a button for apple's mission control on its Mac's and it actually works to bring up the task manager on to note which I thought was pretty cool. No need for me to spend another $50-$70 on a keyboard. I know it's not what the OP reauested but the thread title drew my attention here so I came to read and I wanted to give my feedback on my experience with the apple Bluetooth keyboard.
I edited the post to include a link to the keyboard. You can find it on amazon and best buy as well. I bought mines at best buy.

How's the included keyboard with these cases? I'm pretty critical when it comes to keyboards and would go for a better keyboard while giving up the convenience. Currently happy with Logitech Android bluetooth keyboard with only the minor quirks of browser key not launching browser (can be fixed by renaming chrome apk to browser.apk and having to disable auto capatilization otherwise first auto-capitalized letter will appear twice so you end up with "AA". May just get a small sling with two compartments and a $9 compact Amazon (Arkon) travel stand.

You guys convinced me to get the Kensington keyboard! It looks great and having a keyboard all the time is a huge plus for me.
One question: does the stylus fit in the stylus holder of the Kensington case?
These are nice and all but isn't it a pain to take the tablet out when you want to use it as a tablet? I mean I already have a laptop and I can thumb type on this thing hella fast.

Takes me 10 seconds max to remove the note from the case. And just as quick putting it back in the case. The soft rubber corners peel back easily, alowing for quick removal of the tablet.

What's the difference between these two models of S-pen with Eraser?

Amazon has two different S-pen with Eraser models listed...

ET-S200EBEG: http://www.amazon.com/Original-Samsung-Galaxy-Genuine-ET-S200EBEG/dp/B009PJN1U8

The first one said it was for the note II. probably no difference but I would get the one for your model.

The note 2 uses a (slightly) different digitizer technology. The ET-S200EBEG *WILL* still work on the Note 2, but it will be noticeably offset (definitely enough to be annoying) - same thing happens if you use the Note 10 s-pen on the Note 2.
The ET-S200EBEGSTA however does work perfectly on the Note 2 *and* the Original Note/Note 10 (and I assume the Note 8). I own one and that's been my experience anyways.
So if you don't own a Note 2 and don't plan on getting one, it really doesn't matter which one you get.
Just thought I would update this thread for anyone curious:
I ended up purchasing the ET-S200EBEG model. Interestingly, the pen I received looks identical to the ET-S200EBEGSTA model. The box it came in shows the former model number.
As for the pen itself: I find it's not all that it's cracked up to be. First of all, the button is annoying. I am constantly pressing it accidentally when writing and I find it much harder to avoid than any other s-pen I've used. Second, the pen makes my handwriting sloppier. I can't explain it. I experimented with different nibs and even rewriting the same sentence using the new s-pen and the stock. For some reason, the stock is more accurate. Third, after about a week of use, I noticed just the slightest of offsets. Not as bad as on the Wacom FEEL, but still there. If I had to compare, I would say the FEEL is off by about 5-7 pixels, the S-pen eraser by about 1-2 pixels. Fourth, the eraser is not as useful as you would think; the eraser is hard plastic and you feel as if you are scratching the screen every time you use it. Also, it isn't as precise as the pen tip. I find I prefer erasing with the tip instead of using the eraser.
All of the above, combined with the lightness of the pen (some added weight would have been nice), convince me not to recommend this s-pen. It's possible I just have a bad unit (or a fake?), but I'm pretty disappointed with its performance. This is especially surprising considering how universally praised this S-pen is.

That doesn't sound good at all.
If you got it from Amazon, it should be real. I just ordered mine from ebay korea, and I can only hope it's as good as the original s pen: I just want it to be bigger. Easer function is secondary.
If you're rooted, try this (see the vid):
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.whitedavidp.reset.spen&hl=en
If you're not, get it rooted with CF-root.

One detail I thought I should add is that I changed from stock ROM to Android Revolution HD 9.0 before receiving the S-pen with Erase. I suppose it's possible that the ROM is the true culprit, but the stock S-pen seems to be okay, so it's hard to say.
I will go back to stock ROM and try the S-pen with Erase one last time before trying to get a refund.

New keyboard from logitech for the new tab 4, will it work?

Guys it seems logitech has a new keyboard for the Tab 4 on pre order. The size differences between this and the 10.1 2014 is very similar according to phonearena. What do you think?

looks awesome but seems like it covers spen hole
cant understand why logitech hates note 10.1 2014
I don't mind the spen being covered as long as the rest functions. I can use the pen outside of the device as long as the rest all fits and works.. I will get it as soon as it's available through Amazon. So I can return it incase it doesn't fit

Looks good... Give us a review if you don't mind!
Looks awesome! Just now purchased the note 10.1 but cannot seem to find sny good keyboard case for it. Oddly enough.

I'm also extremely interested in knowing if it's a good fit. I'm not too worried about the s pen.

That is sexy. Maybe even a little modification will help with the SPen.
It would also cover up the camera flash.
Ok, I purchased the Logitech tab 4 keyboard from BB yesterday. It does cover the SPen, therefore I put the SPen in the elastic attachment. Camera is covered, doesn't really bother me, I'm not going to take pictures with my 2014 Note. It doesn't fit perfectly (off ~0.5cm), but it works. I'm going to try a modification to the case (w/o damaging it), to see if I can get a tighter fit. Keyboard works well, however, I am still evaluating this purchase, I will try to keep you posted, once I have implemented mods.
Peace and blessings,
Azeke
Hey, would you be willing to show some pics of it inside the case so we can see whats off?
Perhaps some small pieces of foam will help to wedge the tablet in better....
Thank you!

If SPen and Camera is covered -this case can not be called suitable for our Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. Too bad !
Unfortunately, the Logitech Tab 4 keyboard didn't work well for me. Besides the prior information that previous posters provided (i.e. camera covered, etc.) The USB was covered, the 2014 Note also didn't fit well, even with a mod it wouldn't fit on the top clips like the Tab 4, therefore I returned the item. If you have a Tab 4 and require a keyboard this is the one, I saw someone at BB purchasing the Tab 4 and placing it into the Logitech keyboard and it looked really nice, of course YMMV.

Azeke

Samsung really screwed us all in the rear with the 2014 note....damn
There is a new Beilkin QODE Universal Keyboard Case F5L170 which is supposed to fit the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 edition.

Solved the problem. I returned my 10.1 Note and upgraded to the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (on sale @ Costco, BB price match) and bought the Logitech 12.2 Keyboard (also on sale) . I thought it would be too heavy and large, au contraire.
Happy Father's Day...thanks Honey for the BB gift card.
Peace and blessings,

Three months of use this keyboard (aliexpress.com/item/Ultra-Slim-Black-Wireless-Bluetooth-Keyboard-Case-Dock-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-10-1-2014-Edition/1578657151.html). Very satisfied. During this time it took to charge the battery keyboard only 2 times. Here's my post with the Russian-speaking forum 4pda.ru (4pda.ru/forum/index.php?s=&showtopic=521485&view=findpost&p=30253614)

In the less than 1 year time span, Samsung released 3 new tablet lines..how will companies know which to produce cases for that will make them profits? But yes I agree..Samsung screwed over everyone that bought this device.nothing but problems

I got one of these off eBay. It's a great idea but the quality just isn't there. A few of the keys are already falling off. I would love to pay $50+ for something like this but a bit better built.
