32gb S3, is all space available for apps? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Is all 32 gb of space available for apps? I'm so disappointed about not being able to move apps to an SD card. Nova 3 is almost 2 gigs! With Shadowgun and Dead Trigger installed, I'm out of space on my 16gb S3. I would have bought the 32gb model if I would have known ahead of time.

i got stuck with a 16gb model because sprint stores don't carry 32gb
16gb you really only have like 12gb usable
there are work arounds but you have to be rooted, etc to move apps to SD card. i hope google brings back ability to install to SD card when you download a game..

Yeah, the 16gb is a horrible option if you like gaming. Thanks for the link. Still would prefer a larger internal though. I'll be going for the 64gb Note 2 when it releases.

So does anyone know if the 32gb S3 lets the additional 16 gb be used for app storage?

I have the 32gb model and if I recall it was about 26gb usable, more than enough imo

[Q] Is 16gig Enough

I see the SGN2 on ATT only has 16g of memory. Should I wait to see if they get devices with more memory? I understand that you cannot really run apps from the SD card. Could some one please shed some light on this for me?

I can't imagine someone having 16G of apps? Matter of faxt 8 gig of apps would be crazy. I have 30 apps on my SGSIII and that is only .7G. Most Apps are only like 10M so it would take 100 apps for 1 G. Id say 16G is plenty. Buy a 64G SD card for all your media files and you should be fine.
16 GB is fine on a phone that allows an external microSD card. Put all your music, photos, videos, etc on the microSD and you'll have 16GB dedicated only for apps.
16 GB on a device that doesn't have an SD slot is okay for people who either don't have much stuff or that store that stuff on a "cloud" service (dropbox, google music/drive, etc) Personally, I don't like the "cloud" idea as it uses up my data allotment.
For the sake of comparison, I have 4 Gigs of music and many apps on my Inspire 4G with 8 GB micro SD Card. 16 GB internal with a 32 GB card will be more space than most people will use.
i actually had to clear out internal space for tomtom maps on my 16gb atrix (no option to use sd card for the maps) ....and i only use internal for apps.
yeah i know there are ways to force apps to sd...but it was causing freezing issues on the atrix...
so yeah, a little disappointed that there isn't a 32gb at launch...cuz in two years apps can just get bigger and bigger....

Seen the size of some the newer games yet? 1 or 2gb games will become common soon, especially for FPS and racing games now that the hardware is there.

Can't you install the APPS on the SD card, just like you can do today?
Was just curious on difference in file size between my ios apps and soon to be android apps. I will compare a couple of other apps later today but if this is the trend I don't think I will have an issue with only 10gb of usable space.
I just compared the original angry birds 2.3.0 and my ios app is 112mb and the play store shows the android version is only 24mb.
Netflix ios 30.3mb and playstore shows the android version at 10mb.

wow. That concerns me greatly.
For me 16GB is not enough for main memory. I have a 32GB SD card but unfortunately on the S3 and presumably the Note 2 App2SD won't work. So all you are left with is 16gb to install all your apps, which is really like 11GB useable. Well if you want to play games on your phone (I have been) a lot of these bigger games are each 1GB or larger!! I just Bards tale and that had an option to install 3.5GB!! So for me I have to say my next phone needs to have at least 32GB or larger especially if App2SD can't get working right. I was really hoping the Att GN2 would come in 32 and 64GB flavors.
1 guy posted in the thread I pasted that Titanium backup moves Apps to the SD without issue. I get mine Tuesday I'll be trying it first thing. If it doesn't work I'll have to return it, 10Gb is not enough for Apps now and future.

My main concern regarding the memory configuration is that I thought I read somewhere in the forums that internal memory has faster access than the SD card expansion memory. My current Galaxy Note is using a 16g internal memory configuration with a 32g Class 10 SD card. I was hoping to go for the 32g option for internal memory if it was going to be made available but maybe the speed benefit isn't that great.
When looking at the pre-order options, I only see the 16g model and it doesn't offer the white version that is listed on Samsung's site! I'm not sure if I should wait a little longer or just dive in now!

When are they going to release the 64 GB Galaxy Note 2 ?

When are they going to release the 64 GB Galaxy Note 2 ? At least when Apple say that there is a 64 GB version, we actually see it in real life.
If Samsung is not going to release it, why even announce that there is a 64 GB version. Samsung may as well say that there is a 16/32/64/128/256 GB version of the Galaxy Note 2 during its event to make it look good.
Gn2 forums state Samsung isn't going to bother with the 64, and likely focus on the 16 only.

Wait toss doesn't have 64? Kidding, but maybe the onboard chip coukd be removed and replaced with a 64gb model. Couple of guys I work with could do it and they have the tools. Probably safer to put a 64gb class 10 microsd in it. Maybe in a year, after warranty is out, I'll have them take a stab at it.

I would imagine that a class 10 64GB card would not be a good idea as a replacement to the built-in 16GB flash; I think the onboard flash is higher speed than any SD card we would install, even if you could get the Note II's storage controller and such to recognize the new chip properly, and do the connections properly.
Sounds like a cool project nonetheless
Try this, it will switch your external sd card to your internal sd card. So if you have a 64gb card you can essentially have a 64gb samsung note 2.

How are things running? The internal storage on the note 2 is about triple the speed of an extreme sd card running at 95mb/s. Note 2 internal read write is just over 220 mb/s. If you use a class 10 sd card, those are only 25-30mb/s. If your playing games with huge loads like Nova 3 or move huge amounts of video/photos, it's likely going to take a huge hit to speed if you use the SD card as internal storage.
It's like desktop PCs - many people use smaller ssds for the OS and the bigger but often slower drives for heavy storage. In this case then internal is like an ssd and the SD card is like a data drive.
Can you compare the transfer rate while moving a big video to and from the internal memory compared to moving the same video to the SD card mounted as the internal drive? Curious as to your results.

My point is not that iphone has better storage or not. What I want to say is Samsung stated that there is a 64 GB version of the Galaxy Note 2 and they don't release it at the same time as the release of the 16 GB. Apple actually release the 16/32/64 GB at the same time.
The funny thing is, Samsung actually can make its own flash memory. It does not have to depend on another company.

To be honest i cant tell of any difference in speed in day to day use. Apps load fine and just as fast as the internal sd. The core apps and Stock Rom are installed on the ram, so there wouldnt be any difference really with using the device. As for transferring videos back and forth i haven't really done and tests, but than again i would always store larger media files on the 64gb sd anyway. I do highly recommend this mod especially for someone looking for more capacity. i had this mod on my gs3 and no problems then, and i have no problems now. If anyone is holding out for the 64gb note 2 just look at the gs3 situation. You have to remember you arent removing the internal sd they are just swapped for each other in the OS. So the internal is now the external. Both are accessible just like normal.
I'm running a 64GB microSDXC and it's just fine and dandy. I agree they shouldn't announce it and then not have it available though.

You should never be worried about the internal memory size - even 8GB should be enough, AS LONG AS the phone comes with EXTERNAL SD CARD SLOT WHICH ACCEPTS LARGE SD CARDS. Having the external SD card is NOT necessarily about expanding your storing capacity (although a 64GB does that generously) but rather about having your information safe, significantly less prone to accidental formatting/erasing. Most of the time when you do a factory reset your internal storage is also formatted - do you want that to happen when you stored tons of important information? Of course not!! Worried about read/write speed? Buy a high quality, class 10 external SD card and I promise you won't see any drop in speed. Only use the internal storage for files that the system really looks for and requires to be placed inhere - otherwise, EVERYTHING else, especially large media files, backups and personal files should be kept onto the EXTERNAL SD Card. There are tons of advantages doing so and all those messages companies like Apple, HTC (newly adopted this stupid model), or others alike who try to influence and convince you that external SD cards are obsolete & cloud storage is better, all that is simply marketing BS. Buy Samsung because they didn't aligned themselves to the BS, because you can have a super generous 16GB internal storage and up to 64GB external storage. Do you need more than 80GB on the go? Then reconsider...really! Maybe you shouldn't download all the internet today, leave some for tomorrow when they'll make you pay for all that "free" cloud storage that you kept cramming onto today. Be open minded, understand how things work and do what's good for YOU not for the big corporations!
Several game loft games and the internal storage is gone... some people do that ya know
And most people dont know about all the hacks to get around this limitation.

The issue is the amount of internal (NAND) flash memory installed in the phone. When Samsung announced the Galaxy S4 they said it would be available with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of internal flash. This is comparable to the Galaxy S3, which was available with 16GB or 32GB (and later 64GB) internal flash.
This has become an important issue because the SGH-M919 (T-Mobile's version) comes with almost half of the 16GB internal flash used by pre-installed applications. This leaves the user with less than 8GB for their own use.
Samsung's attitude is just use the external SD card, which can hold up to 64GB. However, the most recent versions of Android do not support running applications from the external SD card. So this not a valid alternative.
Though 8 GB sounds like quite a lot of storage, on my Galaxy S3 (with 32GB internal flash and 64GB external flash) I am using approximately 10GB of the internal flash memory. And this is with all photos/music/video stored on the external card.
I would have already more then filled the internal flash on the 16GB Galaxy S4.
In addition, no matter how much better/faster the Galaxy S4 is, I will not go from 32GB Internal flash to 16GB Internal flash while paying $650 for the "upgrade".
Both the Galaxy S3 and Galaxy S4 come with 2GB of internal RAM.
I hope this answers your question.

It has nothing to do with cleaning. It has to do with having over 700 apps installed, some of them using large amounts of data that could not be moved to the SD card. When I clean the dead and unused file I may recover 10 or 20 MB. Not gigabytes.
I backup daily with Titanium and weekly with Nandroid Manager.

Some of them are because I'm anal. I have something like 30 camera apps because I just can't decide which one I like best. I am a professional photographer and none of them work like my Nikon D-700 .

I use Go Launcher Ex. I have the most commonly used apps on my home page, 2nd most commonly used apps on a second home page.
Everything else is organized into 36 folders in the app tray.

I am leaning towards the JB+ camera app as it seems to be the easiest. However, there are several apps that allow much more control for when I am too lazy to drag out the Nikon.
I use NeoCal in RPN mode for my main calculator but it doesn't handle Hex or Time Value of Money very well.
I sent you a private email about learning Java/Android and an app I would like to write.
thanks in advance...
I'm still waiting for the 64GB version of the SGH-M919.

Any news about the 32 gb ?
Just got my tab 8.4 16GB last week. I couldn't find any info on it, ended up getting the 16GB and slapping on a 64GB sd.

I'll wait a few weeks... If there is no 32gb then i'll forget it.

Why not just use micro SD? Cheaper and more space

I read that some applications have trouble being stored on external micro SD cards. Someone here mentioned their comic reader app has to be on the device as do their comics for it to work properly. The extra 16 would help there.
I'd personally prefer a 32GB device over 16GB as well. I would have bought that if it were available. I use a 128GB micro SD card but having on device storage is handy as well.

There's an app in the play store called SD fix or something like that which can fix this in seconds if you have root.

Although some apps may use the sd cards, like camera/video and tom tom, somes do not! Furthermore, only a portion got to go on the Sd Card.
My S4 is already limited to 16GB. I will also add a 64 GB sd Card if ever there is a 32 GB model here in Canada.

16 vs. 32 GB and ROMs

Is anyone having trouble deciding on 16 vs 32GB configurations? Mainly because of the difference in RAM, with 16/2GB and 32/3GB.
Is there a difference in ROM building based on these versions? Or will all ROMs work the same on both versions? Do any other phones have the same thing, having different amounts of RAM? Not sure if I need the extra GB, but I'll have to see what ROMs support first...
This is all hardware. How in any way would it affect software? It just lets people who need more space for music (like me) to have more internal storage and 1 gb more of RAM which is also really good for people who want speed. For those who just use their phone once in a while, they can buy the 16 GB 2 GB RAM one. It all depends on preference.
32gb
I would recommend 32 gb as all the media files will be bigger due to the resolution. With LG's software there will only be 10~11gb of space left for the user

I agree with you about the 32GB model but not for media files. They can go on external SD card right? 128GB on top of 16 will still do for media files.

Oh right, the g3 will have an sd slot. I'd still go for the 32gb for apps (making the files install on the ext sd is a hassle and the apps won't run when you take the sd out)
Wanting to push this thread because i have the same question... I want to see some roms on the g3. But there is still no answer if there is a difference between 2gb and 3gb in building roms.
No problem here...32gb all the way.
Why would anyone choose 16/2 when you have the option of more storage and ram...makes zero sense.
Always buy the better option!

3gb version all the way!
What is the model number for the 3gb version and where can one buy it.....?
I'm okay with 16 GB of RAM. It wasn't an issue on my Nexus 4 and it isn't an issue on my Nexus 5 and 7. Besides, with an SD card slot, storage isn't an issue.
However, given the option between 2 GB of RAM and 3 GB, I'd go with 3. Always go with more RAM when you have the option.
Problem is that I am in the UK, so only 16gb coming as far as we know. That means I need to compromise on my storage. It will be a hassle to often move my camera pic and videos to SD card, and Whatsapp doesnt allow it.
I dont know which other data intensive apps will also have issues if i try to move to SD card....bit of a minefield.
Any tips would help ?
Shall I just forget about the 16gb version and get a different phone (I do like the look of this one however) ?
Hi all just want to know how much space left available can be used if i take LG G3 16GB ? Thanks

I would guess 10 to 11 gb of space for the apps and data that cannot be moved to the SD card. For me, this will consist of a few apps (metro newspaper eats loads of space !) , and lots of camera pics and videos (high resolution) and loads of whatsapp pics and videos (whatsapp stuff cannot be moved to sd either)
......that is why i am avoiding getting the 16gb version - LG are such s**theads for not selling the 32gb in the UK...makes me so angry !
I sent an email to LG UK support and as expected, they could only tell me that at present the 32gb is not announced for the UK, nor do they know if it will be or when, blah blah blah !!
I already preordered the 32GB version because
- apps getting bigger like GTA
- Offline Navigation like Navigon need alot of space
- Taking pictures and Videos
at least LG sells the 32GB here. HTC won't sell the 32gb M8 and S5 also not available as 32 GB
perfect would be a G3 with 64 GB internal memory

Thanks wyase9 for your info , i really agree with your reason about avoiding geeting the 16gb, but guess i have the same problem like you in my country (indonesia) only get the 16gb version and still don;t know when the 32 Gb will come. My friend in office also said the same like your reason they suggest i wait for the 32gb version ( Hopefully July 2014 will come )

Do they send to US?
i guess so. Amazon.com will ship to Germany, so i guess Amazon.de will ship to USA. The only question would be, if the european model has the needed frequencies for the US and all the carriers
what about ROMs?
Is it that same custom ROM can work on both variants? Only difference i see is an extra gig of RAM. But needed a confirmation if anyone knows
