Bought a Galaxy S III off Craigslist - Stuck in Demo Mode - Fixed it. - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So, some n00b tried to pull a fast one on me and sell me a S3 that was stuck in demo mode. Didn't notice when I first got it because I was in a rush. Phone is absolutely in MINT condition, looks like it's been in a box forever. I'm thinking it was owned by a store to display in a transparent cube box thing? I don't know. I know it isn't stolen, though. It has all the paperwork and whatnot.
Anyway, it kept booting into demo mode, and it wasn't just an app, it was a bunch, it didn't allow USB Debugging or mounting, etc.
So, I tried to ODIN, same thing.. it formatted everything, but demo mode was still there.
I researched, seems no one has had this problem.
So, me not trying to panic, I thought logically. I thought it may be written in the NAND.
Therefore, a simple tick with ODIN 'NAND Erase All' did the trick.
Just wanted to share my story with you guys. This S3 will be my mom's phone as I have a white one.
Happy flashing!

how much did you bought it
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app

$350. I think it was a decent deal.

$350 on a non-subsidized is a great deal.

Just odin flash phone and problem solved ....

If it was stolen from a store then yes logically It would have been blocked by now.
Sent from my SGH-T999

It really sounds stolen, I can't think of why a device intended for purchase would ever have demo mode on, and paperwork is easy enough to fake. Although hopefully for your sake it's not! It's possible an employee stole it, so it's possible it won't ever be reported as stolen.

craigslist bs
Just recently had issues with few people on craigslist, in the past month two issue. Never once have I had an issue before with any trade or purchase before.
Issue one: traded my galaxy s2 for a galaxy nexus, everything looked to be in working order. Well it has never crossed my mine to check the "usb port" to ensure it charges properly. Ended up sending it in to samsung for repair, that was a nightmare its been nearly a month and I've had no updates on my phone plus it was suppose to be shipped out twice already yet it wasn't. Total debacle! Complaint has been issued and working to resolve it.
Issue 2: Purchased a galaxy note for $260 box and everything with it. I had planned to purchase and trade it for a galaxy s3, set up times to meet both people. Purchased the note that morning at 8:00am and then met up with the seller of the galaxy s3 by about 9am. We exchange phones and check them out the, note excellent condition and gs3 was as well. Seller was unable to test it on t-mobile since he didn't have sim coming from the gs3. Galaxy s3 was unlocked which I need since I'm on local carrier. Few days go buy and I am contacted by the person who I traded the note to. Well it has been blocked by t-mobile, (fraud).
I never worried about this since I'm on a local carrier and once the phone is unlocked I'm good to go. First time ever for this to happen, I have always been honest and open about my transactions I do on ebay & craigslist. Its buyer beware as usual,

I'd have to call T-Mobile, eh?

It was most likely stolen by an associate from the store. Demo phones come with all the paperwork it just states demo on the box somewhere (usually but not always). So definitely stolen, there isn't any other way to get a demo.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

Most likely a store demo that was stolen. 50/50 shot of it being blacklisted or not. Depends on if the store it was stolen from was lazy and just deactivated the sim that was in it and called it good or took it further and sent in the imei to get blocked.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2

I don't know how long it would take for them to block the imei if it had been reported but I'm guessing that it wouldn't take more than a couple days and with that said op (hopefully) is in the clear

How much are they going for redhooka?
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk

Just for your info, it can take 30 to 45 days before it gets locked. Conceivably, you may not be out of the locking woods yet. I hope for the op sake, it doesn't get locked, but......

Has anyone returned their t-mobile gs3?

Has anyone returned their t-mobile galaxy s3? Was there a restocking fee and how much? Cause I talked to t-mobile about the buy one get one free deal and asked if I could still get it even though I already bought the phone a week ago and they said no. I don't get why they said no when I could just return it and buy the galaxy s3 and get the deal..
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I thought it doesn't apply to the s3?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Usually it's a $50 restocking fee.
You'll have to purchase both phones and then you'll get a rebate for the other one, so just a heads up if you do it like this.
Also, I think it takes a min for your upgrade to appear again. Not sure when the sale ends, but this might give you problems.

I don't get why you're mad about this? Why should they send you a free GS2 when you already completed your order? Makes no sense. You buy a phone before you even know about the bogo deal, then you find out about the deal and call them and tell them to send you a free GS2? How stupid is that? Common sense buddy. Sorry for flaming you.

Did I get lucky?

So, I saw a girl write on Facebook that she is selling a T Mobile Galaxy S3. So I inboxed her and ask how much she wanted. She told me to make an offer, so I said I wouldn't pay any more than $300. Then she asked me would I pay $220? I told her yes!!!! Says its brand new used since June comes with box booklets etc and flawless condition! Did I just hit jackpot? Is the phone worth it? Anything I should "lookout" for? I'm a galaxy nexus owner by the way guys!!!

Hopefully she isnt scamming you by selling her phone, reporting it stolen, having TMo blackball your phone rendering it useless, using insurance to replace her 'stolen' phone and pocketing the leftover cash.
Other than that you did good!

Since you told her they are going for 300(which is really cheap to start with for a s3) and she offered you 220 for it, seems too good to be true.
But if everything checks out OK with the imei then yes you scored big time.
But make sure you get pictures over the device. I've ran into so many scams on Craigslist that it wouldn't surprise me if they migrated to Facebook.
My advice, proceed with caution

[Q] Buying Used GS3, What to look out for?

So I'm thinking of buying a Used GS3 or Nexus 4. Since the GS3 has expandable memory that's what I'm leaning towards.
Anyway, what kind of things should I ask/look for when getting a used GS3 other than scratches and cracks?
The best and safest thing you can do is meet the seller at a Tmobile retail store. Have an employee check the status of the phone. They can even make a note that the phone has been sold and the original owner cannot report it stolen or lost.

I bought and returned 3 Nexus 7s early on because of problems like the screen lift so it's why I ask.
I also saw that some Nexus 4s had some back glass lift problems and the HTC One has some separation/cracking issues.
I don't think I've read anything about the Samsung phones though other than the plasticky feel.

The guy who sold me the Note 3 was into custom ROMs. When I mentioned Knox efuse and trade in with Jump he said no one there would even know what to look for at trade in and that flashing should be fine. He said the same thing about warranty returns. The insurance company would just take back the device.
But...he did mention that trade ins with Jump would end up as refurb devices. So its possible that there might be someone along the repair service chain knows whats what.
I traded my note 2 in today, running tweaked rom and custom recovery. Still got $275 for it. A lot of the phones get wiped and reflashed without even being checked to see if they were tampered with

I don't think the eFuse matters unless you're getting it warranty repaired by Samsung and even then, they may not bother to check if there's no custom ROM running. Most people don't know about it or even care. I sent a Droid4 to Moto for warranty repair and there is something similar (it may or may not be the same) that gets flipped when it's rooted. They didn't care and repaired the defect.
Just found this thread Googling for the same thing. I was told by the guy at the T-Mobile I went to that they don't care at the store when trading it in, but he's not sure what would happen when it got to wherever they send it and see it tripped.
Basically what happens is if it is tripped your rights to the extended warranty are revoked going forward. You won't be able to add the extended warranty or jump for 12 months plus you pay out of warranty fee.

Don't know yet, I can go in t-community tomorrow and see if I can contact a Samsung tech and see what they say. I asked our Samsung rep and he had no clue there was such a thing as Knox. I'll get back tomorrow with an answer.
