there is one that will work: the OEM one, and then the others are a crapshoot.
spend the bucks, or take your chances.

anything that is compatible with anything OTHER than the s3, is not compatible with the s3... without an adapter.

I bought the official samsung 5-to-11 pin adapter, and wish I didn't: IT'S TOO FAT to fit most cases. Just a FYI.

Sure. Then it looks like crap. (and there's no telling how far you can cut into the mhl adapter; they would've made it thinner if they could've)

Buy the real deal, unless you have an old MHL cable then I would just buy the 5-11 adapter.

I've bought this one. Works ok with the adapter.

The adapter
http://www.ebay.com/itm/15087773755...eName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
The problem is that the adapter is too large to connect it with a case. It's a pain to remove the case every time i connect it to the TV. They made the adapter very large (it's the original adapter from samsung tough).
I'm thinking to cut the case and someane in this post said that it's possible to cut a little of the adapter. Anyone as experience with it?

Cheap hdmi cable on amazon

Hey guys since the new kernels coming out with full hdmi, I think I might finally bite the bullet and buy a cable. Anyone know of a.good cheap one on amazon? Or anyone have any suggestions for some? I know mono price normally has good cheap cables. Any help is appreciated.
I was going to suggest mono price.. they have mini hdmi to hdmi for about 3 bucks...
I also would suggest just getting the mini hdmi adaptor piece... http://www.google.com/products/cata...=X&ei=iIKDTcqmMoGqsAPepvX_AQ&ved=0CEoQ8gIwAg#

Why get the mini adapter when monoprice has the Full Size HDMI to Mini HDMI in stock?
If this is for the HTC Evo 4g, then the correct plug is Micro Hdmi and not mini.

Pick your size. Got mine 2 days later. Works great.

This is correct, I wasn't paying attention when I quoted above. Either way it's still dirt cheap at Monoprice.com and a waste of money to buy an adapter.
I just ordered mine. Hope they dont break too easily

Monoprice cables are great quality, plus they have a lifetime warranty.
do you need to get the high speed cable, or will the standard speed work ok?
my couch is 10 feet from my tv, so I need a longer cable, which only comes in standard speed..
thanks
This one works for me:

Motorola Atrix Lapdock

I just purchased a Motorola Atrix Laptop dock and it should be here in a little over a week. I am curious though, I use an Otterbox Commuter series case... will i be able to use the lapdock without the removal of my case?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
I don't have any case with my atrix+lapdock but I know that there is a piece in the lapdock connector that you can remove to allow the connection with a case.

Thank you very much.

Short answer, NO, even with removing the insert, the commuter will not fit. I had to physically modify (read hack) the case to pull the connectors further through the mounting location. The USB connector needs to come out further primarily.
Another option is to try a 5 wire micro usb extender, and a micro hdmi extension.
afaik the only cases which fit into lapdock-holder are mesh-cases (maybe, see other thread) and the incipio feather (which - I can confirm - fits in any other original-motorola dock).
The Motorola ruggedized battery cover also fits nicely.

I would also like to know the outcome of this. I use the commuter case as well.
The Incipio silicrylic case does not fit into the lapdock either. Only the HDMI connection is made, not the power, so the lapdock thinks only entertainment center is an option. I may just go for the rugged battery cover.

This is a better price if you are living overseas! The previous cable was $15 USD with a $35 delivery charge to Australia. This set is now $40 + $5 delivery fee for both cables to Australia!

I can confirm that these cables work fine with my Rooted Stock Atrix - make sure you take out the extra plastic plate and fits together comfortably. It will be interesting to see if the other Moto phones with the reversed ports (Bionic, Razr, Atrix II etc) will work as well on it as well.. Hopefully they do if I decide to get an upgrade sometime soon.
It is expensive - but at least it works.

So best place to buy the MHL adapter?

I'm willing to bite for the full price of the Samsung MHL adapter just because I know the S3 has some problems without the official one. Anyone know of the best place to buy it? Amazon shows one but it ships from the UK and the one on Samsung's site is not compatible. Is it not out yet?
Anyone else picking it up?
I don't think it is out yet but yes, I might be getting one. It will be a whole lot easier surfing the web on my tv via the phone than using the clunky tv remote control.
I remember reading some post of a user buying one from ebay for about 9 bucks and it worked brilliantly.
i may take a chance on monoprice

I have gotten lots of good things from them including a 75ft HDMI CL2 cable for $30 shipped and a universal GPS mount that works great for any phone for like $5 shipped....and it's never been junk really, always decent quality, very happy with them over the years for any type of audio/video/cable/adapter
only thing is no way to know if it is compatible yet until someone bites, so I may do it one day soon
Well my only thing about some of the non Samsung ones is I read they don't output 1080p if that matters to you.

I personally prefer OEM items. They usually sell for around $11.
eBay, Amazon.
I already checked with Monoprice and they said that their adapter is not compatable with the S3. The Monoprice adapter is a 5 pin adapter and Samsung changed the S3 to an 11 pin adapter. There is a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter available. Most of the mhl adapters out are 5 pin and will not work with the S3. That is what I have been told. The Samsung mhl adapter is $40. You could get the Monoprice 5 pin mhl for $11 and a 5 pin - 11 pin adapter for another $10. That would work but I would personally wait for a cheaper 11 pin mhl adapter to come out than hook up multiple adapters.
constant power needed?
I was really interested in getting one of these but it looks like you will need to have an HDMI cable AND a micro USB connected to a wall socket for the MHL adapter to work... is this true, and if so, is it worth all the cable hassle?

" Regarding our MHL adapter and the upcoming release of the Galaxy S3 in the U.S. We have tested and confirmed that the S3 uses a different pinout in regards to MHL, so our current MHL device will not work for it. We have already put in a suggestion for a device that will fully support the new S3, and we are actively working on cases and other accessories for the S3 as well. "

cheap mhl - 3rd party thread

hi there ,
I want to use the MHL feature but 2 things stop me.
1) I don't want to spend that much on the original one (it's about USD $40)
2) I want to use it at the gym so I don't have a way to connect it to the wall outlet ...
I wanted to know if you know of any cheap MHL adapter that does the work? ( I prefer ebay...)

just found this one , so I'm assuming these will soon pop on ebay for a low price...

I just checked EBay and there's still no 3rd-party MHL to HDMI adapter available for the S3, almost 2 months later, so we still have only two options:
Buy the official $40 Samsung MHL to HDMI adapter
Buy an old S2 MHL adapter ($15) AND the adapter FOR the adapter ($10) == $25.
Monoprice.com has said they're coming out with their own S3 MHL cable, but that was a few weeks ago.

Is there any advantage to buying the official adapter? The way I see it if we go with the second option we can still use the mhl adapter on other phones that have the standard layout, but we couldn't with the official cable.
Do we lose any functionality going with the second choice?

Under my point of view if you are not going to use the MHL 5 pins cable (the old one) for S2 or Note, I would get the new one suitable only for S3 with 11 pins. I expect Samsung to solve the problem with MHL+USB OTG one day, and if it does, I think it would not be possible using the old MHL cable, but I must say this is just a possibility and NOT sure, maybe they will be selling a new MHL cable (if it happens I would cry and I will not buy any other Samsung product...)

Well, going forward, I expect the newer 11-pin cable to be the new standard, at least on samsung phones, so if you have no old phones around (or friends wanting to use it), just get the new cable.
Also, by the time I can upgrade again (~January 1st, 2014), I expect wireless display mirroring will be the more popular option anyway, so either cable may be obsolete.

But a 5 pin won't work with GS3 unless you purchase another adapter.

Yeah, I knew that, I comparing the price to the generic 5pin MHL adaptor which we could use if samsung didn't decide to change to 11pin.
I guess it will never be as cheap since its a niche product for the S3.
This might sound silly but my TV doesn't have a HDMI port (it's pretty old but still slim)
Is there any other type of converters like scart to micro usb (sounds unlikely)

Same here. After doing some research it looks like an unbranded Samsung MHL adapter for the S3. The picture isn't clear enough to get the model number for comparison, but I'm pretty sure after looking at the FCC markings and other things that don't line up with the new S2 MHL adapter. :good:
Ordered it a few mins ago
This one's $20 shipped.

Looking forward to hearing feedback from someone who gets one of these generic adapters.
I spoke with Monoprice's customer service last week and they said they plan on having their own compatible S3 MHL cable before October. I'll probably wait until then as I know theirs will work and should be fairly cheap.
Down to $22 eh? Last I checked the knock-offs were $30, and the samsung official was $40 (now $35).
I'm going to get one of these 11pin mhl-hdmi cables when they finally drop down to $10 like the S2's is, mainly because the 5-to-11 adapter I'm using on my 5pin S2 cable is TOO WIDE for my incipio silicrylic case (and most others) so I have to bend the silicone down. So, fair warning about the adapter for the adapter
Has anybody received one of these from eBay yet? If so, how well does it work?
I've seen a few too many discussions regarding plugging in subpar adapters into these phones that have caused problems. So I may be a bit paranoid but I think I'll stick with official Samsung adapters. Good price though if it works.
