Best stylus for the Samsung Galaxy s3? - Galaxy S III Accessories

Looking to get a pretty good stylus for the SGS3. Mainly because I dont really like touching the screens on touchscreens, for extended uses of time with my fingers. Usually my fingers get hot or sore from doing it for awhile.
Which is why I feel a stylus will come in handy. Anyone here know of any good ones that I can buy for the SGS3? Something that isn't too big, and isn't too small either. Just right.
And I assume that a stylus will work fine over a screen protector, right? I just purchased the Skinomi screen protector(along with the galaxy s3) off of amazon. but haven't decided on what stylus i should get yet

I've tried a few stylus', from cheapo plastic crap (3 for $1), to overpriced aluminum Boxwaves, but finally found THE BEST, IMO: the NewTrent Retractable stylus with micro-knit tip ($10 for 2 pens). I've also bought a nice 9900mAh external battery from NewTrent 2 years ago which still holds up, so they're not some unknown company.
This pen glides over the screen like butter (as long as you don't have a rubbery screen protector like Skinomi), because unlike most pens with a rubber nip, this one has a very fine conductive mesh fabric wrapped over its tip. Being retractable is also a plus to protect the tip. This'll be one of my stocking stuffer gifts to family this year.

Anybody know of one with a fine tip? I personally don't like the fat rounded ones.

http://adonit.net/store/
I have one, and will use NOTHING else.
but, thank you for making me look up what i have, as i now see they have the "flip" with a real pen in the back! upgrade time!

I have this one: http://handstylus.com/ and it works well. I got it when it was a Kickstarter project.

I would actually prefer a fine tip one myself. but i dont think that have one.

Check out the official Samsung c pen stylus 3mm tip and is designed specifically for the s3 so it won't work on anything else. Also kinda pricey. But it suppose to bring a note like experience

Only works without a screen protector, and also kinda sporadic, look up some Youtube videos and you'll see its not worth it unless you keep your screen naked.

i have the stylus from SGP and it feels nice and its retractable. very smooth gliding, i use it for the nexus 7

leather shaped stylus is my favorite.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate all the answers

Now that I think about it, a one with a fine tip would be pretty damn good. Im gonna check some more on google(though I honestly havent had much luck finding finetips that work well for the SGS3, that would also work on say a "Skinomi screen protector") , but if anyone has any more suggestions, feel free to post your input:laugh:

the reason it is there (and why MOST are so dang big in general) is that a capacitive screen (like ours) needs a large contact patch, and then it puts the "touch" in the center of the patch. the disk is a clear, transparent patch, that puts the "touch" where the tiny ball is. you quickly don't even see the disk.
On a bare screen it is effortless. on some of the screen protectors (the "sticky" ones) it kinda drags... but so does your finger.

I've got the C-Pen, and it was a bit hit-or miss at first. I found that if you unscrew the barrel and fit a length of wire (I used a large paperclip, cut to size), it's much more conductive. I'm tempted to try fitting in a small battery to see what that does.

I too use one of Adonit's styluses (the Jot pro to be more precise...no pun intended...) and I swear by it. I had tried one of those "knobby" ones before and i just returned it.
One thing to note: DON'T use a wet-application type screen protector with this one. It will make it plainly unusable. I had a Skinomi protector and I had to throw it away...

Does the Adonis Jot ones work without the presicion disc thingy?
I'm looking for a good stylus mostly for sketching/doodling, so I want it to be responsive and with a small tip. Adonis Jot looks like my kind of thing but I'm not crazy about the disc.
I was looking a good price for a C-Pen until I saw this thread, now I'm not sure what to get

You can't have an super-tiny tip with capacitive touchscreens; it has to be roughly fingertip-sized to work. If you want really small & precise you should get a Note 2 instead, since they use a Wacom digitizer.

Stylus for Handwritten Notes

Anyone know if the Xoom supports using a stylus? If yes, which stylus and app do you recommend?
Thanks!!

OK so you take the tip and the back off a old pen so it looks like a straw.

Then you take ESD foam or conductive foam and wrap wire around it.
Put the wire into the pen and pull it all the way till you get a nice tip of foam sticking out.
Then jsut wrap the wire so you figres will touch it and bam a working Stylus.
Its not the best looking but with time it can be better.
Im sure a metal pen would work the best. Ill have to find one around here and try.
That's a pretty sweet home made stylus
But i've been looking for a fine tipped stylus to use with drawing apps. With my finger, I can never tell exactly where my lines will go and I'm assuming it would be the same with your solution and all of the rubber tipped stylus I've seen.
Can't someone make like a silicon tip or something so its like pen or a sharpened pencil?

The way these touch screens work you cant have a "fine" tip, tried it. I was sad to, cause i was hoping i could use this on the go then send it to my desktop and use my Wacom.
I Bought One That Works Well
This is the one I purchased on Friday. It works very well. Now I just need to find a great note taking (hand written notes and possibly text input) app and I’m all set.
http://www.amazon.com/Targus-Stylus-iPhone-Tablet-AMM01US/dp/B003ZSHKIY
Targus sells them in different colors besides black.
An app I found the other day was "MaplePaint" https://market.android.com/details?id=com.mapleworks&feature=search_result
I am wanting to get a stylus to try out with it. Not sure though, as it seems to not be quite sensitive enough for real handwriting. And, when putting my hand down on the screen like on a piece of paper it messes with it a bit.
I'd be curious to know how it goes when used with a stylus.
-Loc
I picked up a stylus this afternoon. The Targus one.
http://www.targus.com/us/productdet...el1=products&cp=&bannertxt=Stylus For Tablets
The stylus is great, and does a great job doing what it does. Feedback is good. But, I worry about the sensitivity of the digitizer on the XOOM. The lettering is not very accurate in any drawing app I try and things like dots (periods, the dots on 'i' or 'j') do not show up at all.
I check out videos on youtube for iPad apps that do drawing or note taking functions and these do not seem to have any issues. I wonder if it is the digitizer or just the apps not being optimized....
Anyway, stylus gets a thumbs up.
-Loc
I have noticed that if you are using any sort of screen protector it reduces the sensitivity of the stylus.
Not using a screen protector. No need with Gorilla Glass.

I just ordered an O-stylus ... http://ostylus.com/ ... I gather there is a bit of a "knack" to it ... but seems to be the best for "seeing what you are doing" in a drawing/note taking scenario. I'll let you know what I think
You could also go with this one http://www.dealextreme.com/p/aluminum-alloy-touchpad-stylus-pen-for-apple-ipad-ipad-2-black-57797 . I just ordered one and it looks well built. The last one I had didn't have the taper like this one has which is ideal for not risking scratching the screen. Also it's a great price!

Looking for a high quality stylus

I'm looking at styluses on Amazon. The prices vary greatly, but they all pretty much look the same. I want one with a small tip, pen combo, and a bit weighty. I'm trying to avoid ending up with a cheap feeling one without spending 25 bucks, if I can avoid it. If I need to spend that for quality, then I will. Just wondering if there are any favorites out there.
I was under the impression that its difficult to have a small tip styles for a capacitive touch screen which is why you haven't found any yet. They pretty much all need some sort of broad face to work.
i bought the boxwave capacitive styra
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OXRA5S
and the acase stylus
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003ULE6GU
i am very happy with both stylus
Thanks! Is acase as well built and heavy as the boxwave? I just tried the boxwave my friend has and I like it a lot. Amazon has the acase for half the price of the boxwave. If it's just as good, I'd rather get 2 or 3 of the acase. (Wife has an ipad.)
Thanks for your input.

Yeah, the problem with the thin tip is the resolution of capacitive touchscreens, they just can't detect very small objects pressing against them like a resistive screen.
I will actually probably get rid of my Xoom for the new HTC tablet and a scribe digital pen.
I find I am handwriting way too many things on a legal pad instead of the xoom. Defeats a lot of the purpose for a tablet for me.

I have a Kensington branded one, same as the boxwave, work quite good, most good one have the same tip, cheaper one use conductive foam used for IC protection...
The kensington is a bit heavy but feel right, and since there's a pen I have a good reason to carry it..
The secret is the tip
Whatever brand you purchase, if you want durability make sure the tip is rubber and not foam. I have used both and although the foam tip seems to work better, the rubber tip has held up MUCH better to daily abuse and being thrown in and out of my bag.
I had a Rocketfish version from BB as well as a Targus version. Both were good and double as a pen (use parker refills). The Targus was smaller and lighter which was nice as a stylus but sucked as a pen. Rocketfish brand feels nice in my hand but has no cap storage.
Both work well with the Xoom even with the rubber tips and were sub $20 at the store.

Well, like I said I had ordered this pen.
http://us.kensington.com/html/17864.html
She arrived a few days ago, has good accuracy, even touching the tip a little while.
Tested in several softwares and has a very interesting performance. It is much easier to perform some tasks.
I just thought it a bit heavy, nothing dramatic, probably because it is an ink pen together.
If this is equal to another in build quality and precision. Probably this is lighter:

Seriously faqking cool man... I just discovered sketchpad and am getting one of these... I suck at drawing but i love it. The ostylus seems awesome since u can see what you are drawing
I purchased this stylus from eBay and it's working good. It has a rubber tip. It's aluminum and has a heavy feel to it. I purchased Sketchbook and will be playing around with it a little more.
I also purchased another stylus from eBay which is like a 3 in 1 (Pen,Capacitive, and Resistive tip). I will come back in here and compare the two. I will also sketch the same drawings and compare them side by side with the different stylus.
Here's a pic.

I'd say the diameter is 1/2 in. I purchased another stylus that I'm waiting for and also purchased the oStylus (the price dropped) just Google it to purchase it. I'm pretty sure that I'm going to be very impressed with the oStylus.
Sketchbook isn't polished enough yet but I don't know if it's because hardware acceleration isn't built in yet.
Here's a picture of a rough sketch I did today really quick. You can look at the lines where I had to go over them many times to get it right. I used the stylus above to draw this out. The pen is kind of heavy so it's a pain to really get in there and make curves. The pen is good for straighter lines and drawing jets, building, etc. I have a little difficulty with curves because it doesn't feel right. I usually end up holding the stylus with my index and thumb to sketch since Sketchbook sometimes doesn't pick up the strokes when I'm holding it like a pencil. I'm going to keep it for shading and stuff but I can't wait until I get the oStylus I ordered.

I know what you mean, my friend has a stylus with the same problem, the lines "fail" sometimes...
Try this, I recommend:

[]'s
My big problem with drawing on my xoom is that the way I've grown up drawing has me resting my hand on the page as kind of an anchor to help stop the normal hand shakes that I get sometimes. Which of course on the Xoom just triggers a multitouch and cancels any input from the stylus. I have to relearn how to draw because of it :/

Just Got This Case.

EDIT; I am placing all of the pics I've posted in this thread below and removing them from later posts. This needed cleaned up plus it should make it easier for people to get a better idea of how they look when you get more than one and trade out the parts. More colors and pictures in the next few days...
I just got one of these and so far I have to say that I am impressed. The plugs that fit the earphone jack and the hdmi/micro usb ports fit remarkably well. I think that I would like it more if the colored plastic piece were a little less slippery. But it is the 'rubberized' plastic so it isn't that bad.
Another EDIT; After owning this for a few months I have to say that the plastic hasn't turned out to be that slippery at all. Just about right for staying on the dash (ish) and getting it in and out of my pocket. And I've decided it is more of a 9/10 to me. And for 10 to 12 bucks shipped, what's not to like.
Thanks garrett_tx for this Amazon link.

Awesome, thanks for the review. I was just looking at this case maybe like 2 days ago.
Could you answer a couple of questions? -
- how good is it in protecting the phone if i drop it for example?
- how much thicker does it make the phone look?
- is it possible that the part of the case which "clips on" on the front of the phone can leave scratches?
- does it come with a screen protector?
THANKS!

Edit; Pics moved to original post.
- how good is it in protecting the phone if i drop it for example?
Not sure. Haven't dropped it yet. But as you can see it is a two piece case.
The corners are doubled up with both the plastic and silicone. So I expect the case to take the hit, and not the phone.
- how much thicker does it make the phone look?
Not much.
- is it possible that the part of the case which "clips on" on the front of the phone can leave scratches?
The silicone is between the outer case and the phone, so not a problem.
- does it come with a screen protector?
Nope.
On a side note. I am ordering another one, maybe two. I like the fact that the pieces can be mixed and matched.
Also, It is a little more difficult to use with the docks because of the flap, but not impossible.
Hope that helps.
looks like a good case and there are many cool colors combinations...
i might take one of these.

I removed the hard part and messed with it a little. I guess it feels ok. Without the molded plastic the silicon part is pretty loose. The sides are extra loose. The ends seem ok at best. I don't think that it would just fall off or anything while holding it. But going in and out of a pocket might be a drag.
thanks I think I will buy one on amazon, price seems more interesting

Yeah, the price looks good there too. I don't have Amazon Prime so the shipping would add 3 bucks to the total. Makes it around a dollar more than the ebay price for me. Another example of why I really need to kick Netflix and get Prime...
only certain items get "prime" status, on the case i would have to pay the 3 dollars even though i have prime
just depends on the seller on amazon
I've got this case since 4days.
Good quality/price, the silicone alone feet not so good but with the hard part it's ok.
I have this case as well--white under with black gray outside--and love it. I've had it bout 2 weeks now and it's holding up quite nicely. =)

You'll like it unless you are docking the phone constantly. It will dock, just not very well. I don't dock mine much so it isn't an issue. I ended up getting the black/red and the red/black cases. Now I can mix and match, and have a totally red or black case or leave them as they are. I really dig it all red or all black tho.
so this case can be use with the HD dock too?

Well sort of... You have to hold the rubber thingy that covers the mini usb and hdmi sockets. And once you get it in the dock the fit isn't that great. Loose and wobbly, but functional. Other than that it's a great case.
I do love this case alot i have the all black one
I got an outterbox... was actually disappointed in it. I dropped my phone from about 5 feet, bobbled it till it dropped, and it ended up landing on the top side. I picked it up and saw no physical damage, but the digitizer was not responding toward the top. The notification still works, but just underneath it to about a half inch below all the way across doesn't work. Screw you outterbox!

Moshi iVisor...innovation or ineffective?

I just seen this protector on CPN and the design is unique, piqued my interest. I haven't seen another like it. Anybody have it and if so, how is the fit and clarity? Does the colored areas match the phone nicely and blend it as it should does it stand out like a sore thumb?

I had one on my atrix 2, and while i liked it, I dont know how well it would fair against the bevelled edges of the screen, being that it is completely flat.... Anyone else who has one some input on this would be greatly appreciated! thanks in advance....

I've seen a lot of these before an installed many of them for people and everytime i did it fit very very well and highly recommend over any other screen protector on the basis that you can remove it wash it and dry it and use it again. Zagg sucks

I bought this from my local ATT store a few days ago...
I am Mixed on if I like it or not. The fit and finish is very nice... it feels nice and doesn't have a problem with the beveled edge.
The Clarity of the screen is good... but it is not as good as a naked screen I have the iVisor AG and the AG stands for anti glare. it does cut down on glare but it does muddy the image some.
As far as the visor part matching.. it does not match perfectly. You can see the cutouts on the bottom of the phone for the 2 soft keys. It's not terrible but it's not perfect either.
one thing I do love about it is 0 fingerprints and the quality of the screen is very good. I feel very confident that my screen is protected. 0 bubbles, application is a breeze and you can pull it off and clean it. Although I haven't had to yet.
I paid 25 bucks and that is a bit steep if you ask me, I was really feeling vulnerable having my phone naked so i went ahead and bought it.
anyways.. my .02

Thanks for the link. On the white phone there is some led bleeding around the capacitive buttons, I'd imagine this would significantly decrease that. Hmm.....might have to stop by AT&T tomorrow

I usually can't stand most screen protectors especially anti-glare, but this new moshi ivisor ag on my galaxy 3 is incredible. Inside screen looks great and fool proof to put on take off and back on again!

I had one and I didnt like it. Install was easy and bubble free.
It was far to easy to get dust between the screen and the protector it self. Also had a hard time getting any case to work with it. Maybe it was just my bad luck? Then again maybe not.
Try it out! You may like it. I on the other hand didn't find it all that great. Way to pricey and the screen protector seemed to have collected dust and lint like crazy.
I bought one for the pebble blue, and really liked it. Did a great job of preventing fingerprints. Overall, it blended in very nice. Most people didnt even realize a SP was on it.
I ended up returning it and just getting a basic SP because I couldn't use it along with the TPU case I got. Because the iVisor goes all the way to the edges, when I put the case (Diztronic Matte Black) on, it would push the iVisor up. The case was more important to me, so I opted for the regular SP that doesn't go all the way to the edge. This will work until I get an Otterbox Defender.
If you don't use a case...the iVisor works very well.

Good to hear. Does the part covering the screen lay flat against the screen or is there a bit of room between them? The way I imagine you'd be able to tell is when you press on the screen to type or swipe, you'd see some movement in the protector possibly causing a slight degredation of the display.

That goes with any protector, as far as getting dust trapped. That's more of an issue with your environment and your prep work than the protector itself. What case were you trying to use with it? Yeah, it's very pricey but worth it if it can be reused, as user friendly as claimed and doesn't degrade the display much like most AG protectors do. I like that it covers the whole screen but doesn't present the danger of installing a wet application protector....nor the downtime that goes along with those.

Yeah, those TPU's fit very tight so I could see how that would be a problem with this protector. I use a Incipio Silicrylic so hopefully I'll be fine cause I stopped by the AT&T store today and picked one up! Gonna install it later on and see how I like it, will post a review as well.
I love mine I got the white one eventhough I have the pebble blue phone. I think the contrast looks nice even where the menu buttons appear. It was hard to find a case that fits right with this protector but this speck case goes great with it. Please ignore the bad photos can't find my nexus or camera so found a thundebolt laying around to take pics. For a 35 dollar case it scratches easily but still looks and feels great and provides reliable protection

Recommend a stylus for the s3?

I've been using that popular cheap $5 stylus with the round rubber tip, it finally broke and the tip is loose.
I mainly use the stylus for swype text input, and general navigation, no drawing. What would be the ideal stylus for the galaxy s3? I'd like to be able to use it on the soft menu and back buttons too. I like a soft tip, not hard like the C pen (which i saw in the review does not work on the soft menu buttons).
Has anyone used the iFaraday stylus ( http://www.ifaraday.com/ )? That seems like my first choice right now, it would be nice to know if it works on the soft menu buttons.

I just bought a cheap three pack of stylus' off Amazon for ~$1 w/ free shipping. Being plastic, they're much lighter than my old aluminum Boxwave pen, but they're functionally equivalent and nice enough in quality (especially for only ONE DOLLAR )
Not worth overpaying for these things, IMO.

Yep that's the one i have. It does work great for being so cheap, slides on the screen pretty easily. You really need to tap hard on the soft buttons for it to work which was kind of a hassle. Also my tip became loose after a month.
The iFaraday has a cloth tip and requires very little pressure (according to the website). So it should slide on the screen a little better, and since it operates with light pressure, i'm guessing it should work on the soft menu buttons. It's $12 + shipping and theres a 30 day money back guarantee which isn't too bad.

From what I heard, Samsung is supposed to be releasing a variant of the S-Pen for the GSIII like the one on the note? I could be wrong but I remember hearing this in a Tech conference video a little while back.

That'd be impossible, since the S3 doesn't have a Wacom digitizer built into the display like the Galaxy Note's do. Maybe the S4 will have it.

Yes I know it doesnt have the digitizer but they said they will be releasing a variant that uses the capacitive Technology. I don't know if it was just a marketing fluke. But I will try to find the video when I get home.

How old was this video? Mabey it was the samsung C pen they were referring to? From the video reviews i've seen of the C pen it looks like an overpriced piece of junk.

Apparently the C-pen only works on the SIII so I assume there is something special about it that makes it better for the SIII.

The C pen works partially on other devices with highly sensitivity screens like the galaxy s3. It works on the note if you press hard. Which shows theres no special screen technology unlike the note and its stylus.
