Dropped Galaxy S3. Insurance? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

Sadly, I dropped ma baby! ): er actually, a friend dropped it. from about 3 feet on concrete. My poor Galaxy that I've owned only since 7/1 that ive babied with my invisible shield all of its life broke. But no. not in the way you'd expect. the LCD broke. Upon removing my shield i notice that the digitizer is still in tact, not a scratch on it in fact. just 3 hairline cracks you can see in the lower left hand corner. Leaving only one question, does the Premium handset bundle cover this? and how much would the deductible be?
Thank you - Frustrated Owner.

Fix it yourself. $20 costs the screen. There is a video here how to do it. Not difficult at all. Otherwise u gotta pay $80 (thats what they quoted my friend) he had tmobile insurance.

Sorry for your loss
Oddly enough, a very similar event happened to me recently. GSIII took a 3 foot fall on the street and i had a full Skintomi shield on it, but that's not enough apparently. Cracked the screen, which spidered across the entire screen. But man, if my "friend" did it like yours did, i think i would be half a step shy of killing them!
Good news is, if you have insurance it should be fully covered but unfortunately it's a 130 dollar deductible. The process itself is pretty painless and Asurion is FAST. i broke my phone on a Wednesday, they had one on my doorstep Thursday morning. And it was a brand-spanking-new device. To start, go to www.phoneclaim.com
Or you can try to change the glass yourself like lazarat suggested. But personally, i know that i'm not handy enough to do that. Good luck

Tmo deductible is $130. I'm surprised by how many people sign up for the insurance without reading how much the deductible is, I guess thats how they make their money though. Are you sure the LCD broke and not just the glass?
Replace glass

The 130$ isnt bad however if you have your phone stolen. No?

That's just the glass/digitizer, not the actual LCD.

I dropped mine on concrete yesterday morning while working on my car. Luckily I have it in a case-mate tough case. I expected some damage, but when I picked it up and wiped it off there wasn't a single scratch. I don't want to keep tempting fate, so I got a better belt pouch that fits it properly.

Already Shattered My New S2!

Long story short- I was baby sitting my toddler who had just learned to walk and as I was reaching out to prevent her from falling I dropped my 21 day old S2 from approximately 4 feet onto tile. Phone fell screen first. There wasn't a sound except hearing my heart beat and couldn't believe my eyes as I turned the phone around and the LCD was shattered but still responsive.
Every sad story has a happy ending- my baby is ok and my rugrat is too. Sent the phone to Samsung to have it repaired. I didn't have insurance but my mastercard is reimbursing me since it's within a 60 day purchase protection period. Total bill from Samsung for a new LCD and touchapanel was $161. It was a 6 business day turnaround time back to my front door. The saddest part of the story is that I was just touting to my brother how awesome it is to have gorilla glass and the nexus galaxy won't. The irony is that it doesn't matter.
Wow, that looks like my friend's iPhone 4, if you got that to land on one of those corners, who cares about special glass, that iPhone was a goner!
Good to see that you don't have to pay for the repairs though. $161 is pretty expensive for only a touchscreen panel! :O
These kind of stories make me glad I have insurance on my phone.
Im wondering waht gorilla glass even does now since ive scratches on my screen...
I've learned that just because a phone has gorilla glass doesn't mean you can be careless
The screen will scratch so if I have to carry it in my pocket I make sure it's empty. Every time I drop it I send a prayer up before it even hits the ground lol.
My girlfriends Moto Defy has a shattered screen and my old Defy had scratches on the display.
Glad you got your screen replaced, I would have been heart broken lol.

This makes me want to go out and get a screen protector and a case...lol
Scared me
That does it !! no kids are touching my phone, better yet I am kicking the kids out and I am ripping the tile out also !!
Seeing that pic made my balls clench
ouch! seeing that picture makes my heart break
glad to hear it got all taken care of
wow... $170 for a screen is a bit much
i wonder if we can get it cheaper on ebay

LOL I put my wife in that bracket. She drops every single phone she touches all the time. I'm amazed that her iphone screen still hasn't cracked yet
I didn't want to deal with the hassle with getting the right type of screen and learning how to replace it. Made the decision much easier when mastercard would take care if it so I would still have a warranty also.
PS. I took those pics with my vibrant.I actually like the size of that phone better but do like everything else about this phone!

$130 is cheap compared to the $500 it would cost to buy a new one..even if you added in the $8/mo for however many months
Hope you get a nice screen replacement. The reason why the screen is so expensive is because it's one-piece. AMOLED are printed on the glass so once that shatters, the glass (digitizer) and the AMOLED assembly has to be replaced. This also goes for the iphone 4. The glass is inseparable from the LCD.
Even on other phones, the glass+assembly is $80 dollars and the rest is the cost of labour. Better luck next time. I broke my iphone digitizer 3x and they were only $10 to replace because i could replace it individually.
So for everyone else, take care of that piece of glass

Wow that sucks... good move on your part to claim it through master card. Does the new screen look any different or better with less lines and clearer whites?
I have the same case on the phone as you, has the same drop but all OK. The only difference is I have the zagg protector on the front. It did screw up the protector but they're sending a new one for the cost of shipping. I'm wondering if that protector has a tiny bit of shock absorbance in it.

when I dropped the phone it didn't have a case on it since I was actually drying it from water that said toddler also spilled on the poor S2. I'm pretty sure the D30 case you see in the picture would have prevented it from breaking.
The screen is the same great quality but I didn't have an issue with the old one to complain about.
I still wouldn't get insurance.never had a major issue with previous 2 smart phones and consider this a freak accident. I can almost guarantee their profit margin is high on selling insurance which means its a bad bet for the consumer.

This is off topic, and it may be a first timers mistake, but you don't 'babysit' your own kids. That would be considered 'spending time' with them. You babysit other peoples kids.

[Q] Captivate Glide Case?

In the absence of a Captivate Glide Accessories/Q&A subforum, I'm posting here. Just wondering if anyone has been able to locate a case for the Captivate Glide. I understand that there would be extra complexities because of the keyboard, but surely something should be out by now...?
I've only seen one. Its a two piece. Plastic. But the only color I've seen it in is a god awful blue. I had it. When I took it off to add e screen protector I realised that the bezel around my screen was scratched. The scratches were caused by the idiot case itself. Who ever makes the case engraved a serial number on the inside of the top piece. Poorly designed IMHO

I too have the captivate glide. I am finding out that I don't use the slide out keyboard very much. I have gotten so used to the swipe keyboard, I could do with out it. I'd like to see an otter box that fits this device, or at least something that would protect the device well from impacts and the brittle glass screen. we just purchased two of them for my wife and I and well... my wife's screen just got cracked. $200 deductible on insurance or $130 in parts off ebay and to have someone to install the parts!
P.S. anyone know of a good smart phone accident insurance that still only charges $50 for a deductible! were still within the first 30 days of service!
I just got a captivate glide from Best Buy and got their Geek Squad insurance instead. It's 9.99/mo and doesn't actually cover loss... but the nice thing is NO DEDUCTIBLE. I am still looking for a good case, though, so if anyone has one, let me know!
Lots of options on Ebay for pretty cheap. Sometimes you just have to experiment a little bit. http://www.ebay.com/sch/Cases-Covers-Skins-/20349/i.html?rt=nc&LH_PrefLoc=1&_nkw=Captivate%20Glide%20hard%20Case&_dmpt=PDA_Accessories&_fln=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m283

How did you crack it? Wow, I dropped mines a bunch of times and it even got sat on multiple times but the screen is scratch less. I only use the hardware keyboard for blocks of text and swype for quick things. I love the 4" screen because it's the perfect size for my hand and pockets. I don't see the point of paying for insurance since most things are covered under the 1 year warranty, correct me if I'm wrong.

[Q] I broke my GSM Galaxy Nexus screen already

I have had vertical banding issues since day 1 with the LCD, and I contemplated returning the phone (to China) because of it. Instead, the seller notified me he'd pay to have the LCD replaced, either in the US at my choice of phone repair stores, or send it back to China and he'd send to a shop to do it. I'd do it myself if I could find a supplier for the LCD/glass digitizer (I have done it on multiple Nokia phones, including a 5800XM). Alas, while finding a suitable repair shop, I cracked the glass.
Am I the first one to drop the Galaxy Nexus? It fell about a foot onto bricks, and now I have a crack in the glass extending from the earpiece to the power button. I called around and I am the first in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area to break their Galaxy Nexus.. great. My case and screen protector haven't even come yet.
Does anybody have any advice on where to go from here? Do I ship the phone back to China (expensive, and I'll be without a phone for 3-4 weeks)? I can't believe I had my Nexus One for two years, dropping it all over the place, and it's still in beautiful shape, while this one has LCD issues from day one, and now cracked glass after a single small fall (that the Nexus has taken many times.. I need to stop driving with the phone in my lap).
done it many times (phone on lap when driving) then forget when i get out and it gets thrown out of the car onto the ground.
many places dont have nexus accessories yet ... ghost armour needs 10 days to even get a screen protector in (they put on a htc sensation cover for now - doesnt even cover the screen itself, let alone the entire from !)
I took a look at the Galaxy Nexus teardown on ifixit. Link HERE.
If you look at steps 6-8 you'll see that popping the screen/digitizer out really isn't too bad at all. The real issue will be finding the screen/digitizer in one piece for a decent price. I looked around on Amazon and EBay and failed at finding any for sale.
However, if you can find a screen/digitizer for under $200 somewhere I would follow the ifixit instructions and change it yourself.
I browsed through the teardown and it doesn't seem like that'd be an issue at all. I have done a fair amount of phone repairs previously, including lcd replacement and smt soldering on the phone's main PCB. The problem is that I can't find anywhere that sells the digitizer/LCD. Looks like it's back to china for this guy.
Yeah I've thrown the N1 out of my lap probably twenty times in the past two years. It's always taken it like a champ. I wish they had used gorilla glass on this phone.
I've dropped my GN twice already, once onto a concrete floor. So far, I've been lucky. Can't find any damage. It's not too reassuring to hear that it will crack so easily, though.
FYI, even Gorilla Glass isn't shatter-proof. Highly scratch resistant, but not shatter-proof. Give it the right point-load, and it will also shatter.
I know that Gorilla Glass isn't shatterproof, but I have seen unspeakable things done to my N1 and nothing has ever come of it. I'm still putting off sending this back to China.. I have a feeling it'll be gone for a month or more.
Ouch Sorry To Here Better Send Back 2 Repair

Maybe it’s the new fortified glass design that’s flawed?
Maybe it’s weather related, from indoor to cold outdoors?
Maybe it’s just a bad design overall?
I just want to warn others of it’s extreme fragility.
Maybe it's you, bumping into something hard and pointy?
I've dropped mine twice on ceramic tile from waist height and had no damage other than a couple of scratches on the screen. Maybe it was just a particularly unlucky drop?
lol yeah phone on lap while driving is death for phones.... done that many many many times with too many phones.

I've had my phone for about 2 months or so. Found out the hard way how fragile the glass was when my keys left a few minor scratches on it the second day of use. Well yesterday the hairline crack appeared between the power button and the volume rocker. Samsung says its physical damage caused by dropping the phone or having it in my pocket. What... I can't put my phone in my pocket anymore. Well the long and short of it is I have to send the phone back to the country of origin England in this case and I have to pay for the repair. I'm trying to find the glass assembly so I can replace it my self. So far no luck on Google. I agree with all the comments about the glass being too weak on this phone. Long live the Nexus one which I've switched back to till I figure out how to get this galaxy broken glass fixed.
I've got a broken line on Glass of my Gnex, I hate, very hate, this at only 4 month of usage.
Can i send my Gnex to Samsung and use a Warranty to change it?
This is a genuine question so I'm not trying to get anyone's back up, but is mobile insurance not that popular outside the UK? You can barely leave the stores here without being sold it!

I assumed so, but tend to see a lot of similar posts of damaged or defective phones and no mention of insurance. Always seems to focus on returns or DIY repairs. Just wondered if insurance was particularly costly overseas. Seems not.

In the UK you get either a cash value or a replacement nexus. You would only get a substitute if the goods are no longer on general sale. Usually electronic goods I have claimed on have been cash (minus the excess) to the phones purchase price. Make sure you have advised them and can prove the cost or you may end up with a settlement below the phones true value.
For example, my laptop was worth £500 when new, but I have only insured it for £300 as I know I can get a decent replacement and keep my premiums down. I have my nexus insured for £400 as I know this will buy most new phones outright should I lose it

Shattered Screen - TEP or DIY?

Well, I got stuck in a hailstorm in GA yesterday. I ended up Sprinting (ha get it?) to my car and the phone fell out of my pocket. I actually didn't realize it until moments later. I found it in a river flowing through the parking lot. Fortunately, the glass was the only thing damaged. LCD still works perfectly. No water damage either! Not sure if it was the fall or a hailstone that did the damage to the glass. I have Sprint TEP (just signed up through open enrollment this month thankfully). However, I am confident that I can do the repair myself. My question is this...
Is the image quality noticeably diminished by replacing the screen with a non-OEM screen? I know it wont be Gorilla Glass 2 and it won't have the proper LOCA adhesive between the glass and the digitizer. I am happy to pay the $150 deductible if the image quality and gorilla glass are worth it. Has anyone replaced their own screen who can attest to the display quality before and after? Thoughts on whether I should replace it myself or file a claim with Asurion?

If you found it in a river, I'd be a bit more concerned about water damage. It still turns on/runs fine and the screen is just cracked? Or is it not turning on?
I know that the screen used to run for about $100. For me, I'd probably prefer to have a refurbished phone than try to do the repair myself. For me, the $50 more is worth the saving of trouble/time/risk of screwing up the install.
But I know of some people on XDA who have installed it themselves and have loved it, so it might be worth it.

It looks like I can get all the equipment needed to do the replacement myself for around $50. I am confident I can do the replacement. I am just worried about the image quality since I wont be using an autoclave + LOCA. Also, the lack of Gorilla Glass 2 would be somewhat of a deterrent. Not sure if these are valid concerns and worth the $150 deductible though. Hoping others who have done the replacement will chime in as well.

I have done all of this so far. Definitely think I can do the replacement myself, but I'm more concerned with image quality afterwards. The new screen isn't GG2 and it wont be bonded to the underlying digitizer. From what I understand, this diminishes image quality slightly. Anyone notice if that's true? If so, to what extent?
Also, does anyone know what this will do to my TEP? Would it invalidate any future repairs?

Update: I spoke with a representative at a Sprint store that I used to visit when I had an Evo 4g. They put my name on a list to replace the screen (free of charge since I have TEP) when someone comes in with a working screen. This is unlike any other Sprint store I've called. I'm not sure it's typical service, but hopefully it pans out! It's a third party official service center, so I guess they aren't bound by the same rules Sprint stores go by?

Broken Screen Replacement Options!! Please help! :(

Hi,
I dropped my S2X today and broke the screen.
The picture is okay in the back.. but the glass on the front is broken. So, is it called digitizer or LCD? and how much should I pay to repair it? People are asking from $100 to $175!! And seriously, the price for the new phone when I bought outright was $150!!
I found something on eBay for around $15..
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/New-Black-Di...cement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3f1b029e5d&_uhb=1
So, is this what I am looking for? or something else?
I live in GTA, so I was thinking there might be more options to repair the thing in some store or something but no luck on Kijiji! Asking for 3 digits is insane!!
Let me know what should I do!
Thanks,

Well, the cost of a smartphone can easily be $500-$800, so paying only $100 to get it fixed can be a deal. I see people complain all the time that Apple charges $149 for Out-of-warranty work, when they "only" paid $199 for the phone. An iPhone can cost $649-$849, the "$199" paid is the on-contract, subsidized price.
And, if the design of Samsung's phones are similar to the iPhone, you may need more than just the digitizer. The iPhone 4 and newer have the Digitizer (the outside part that you touch) and the LCD (the inside part the displays the picture) fused together, as one piece. You cannot replace "just" the digitizer or "just" the LCD. You must purchase a "display assembly" - both pieces together, as a single unit.
When I check eBay for "T989 Display Assembly", I see many going for around $250.
Again, if people are only asking for $100 - $175 to fix it, I'd go for it. Consider it a lesson learned and try to be more careful with the device.
Another 100 and you can buy a new N4.
Sent from my cellular telephone
The glass is separate from the digitizer. If it is anything like the s3/s4/note2, the glass is attached with a layer of adhesive to the front of the entire lcd. You can order just the glass for $10 USD. It is possible to change. It just takes patience. You must heat up the front of the glass using either a heat gun or hair dryer in order to soften the glue that holds it all together.
Yes its a pain, but very doable. Look at the YouTube guides carefully. Heres a link for the white and the black glass both under 10 bucks on ebay.

If you aren't careful, you can and will crack your LCD, in which case you are SOL. Always keep the glass heated ( roughly 185 degrees ) and work slow prying upwards, not downwards.
