[Q] Cannot connect to ATT software update server - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hi all,
I have not been able to get an update since I bought my S3. I keep getting that error: Communication failed. Server is currently unavailable..blah blah..see screenie.
I have seen people post that they got a replacement phone because of this, one person said ATT gave them new sim card and that fixed it. My question is, I am rooted. Should I unroot before visiting ATT? If so how exactly do I do that. How will they know I am rooted? Superuser icon they will see...but is there anything else?
Thanks

It's best to unroot. They will log that data on your phone. I hope your phone didn't trigger the triangle counter.

I guess part of my question was, how do I unroot?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app

Restore with Kies or stock unrooted ROMusing Odin?!. Use triangle away app on Market Place if you have triggered the counter and set it to zero again.

Thank you

How do I find out if I have triggered the counter? Whatever that means

I've gotten the same error from AT&T since Ive had the first Samsung Galaxy more than 2 years back. Now I have an HTC One, moved to this from and iPhone 5, and wanted to check for an update, surprise surprise, server unavaiable. With the Samsung I remember I had to go to Samsung site, don't remember the exact site, but that is what I had to do to get the Froyo update. Yea, that long ago. Still the same.

hi gents,

I'd be surprised if there is a way to get rid of it. You may just have to use a third party contact manager if you want to stick with this ROM.

Mine has a camera issue. Once I move around the camera will freeze up, give me a "camera has failed" error, and sometimes cause my phone to reboot. Im getting a white one this time too.

Hey first post, I am about to exchange mine as well but I do not know how to do the MDL official thing you speak of, I did this to get back onto stock http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2258628 but my phone status still says custom, any idea how to fix that? Also is there any way to change the download mode to say stock instead of custom?
Use Kies to restore it back to original. I did mine a few hours ago sucessfully. Under tool setting in Kies.

Were you rooted? I have the same issue and wonder if it's because of flashing. I'm getting my replacement Friday.

Yes, I was rooted and running wicked and the camera never crashed once on the stock rom. However, that does not mean that rooting or the wicked rom itself caused the camera problems. After flashing back to original firmware my camera problem remains. I chalk it up as a hardware issue. My new on got here today and im unsure if I will root it just yet.

Weirdest thing ever..

So I convince my sister to let me root her phone after showing her my awesome phone. I get all the files and prepare for the Odin flash but when I go into download mode on her phone everything says custom and she has a flash count of 7. Weird thing is that her phone isn't pre owned and I can guarantee that her phone has never been rooted or had anything flashed on it. Anybody see this before?
Sent from my SGH-T999
Not I. The only way to trip the counter is to flash anything but official firmware via odin.
You sure it wasn't a refurb, or used and repackaged? Unless she got it direct from T-Mobile or a Wal-Mart type store, this is very possible.
Sent from my SGH-T999L using xda premium
That's the weird thing, she bought it straight from tmobile. My sister has no idea how to do any of this stuff so I know she didn't root it before.
Sent from my SGH-T999
Maybe it was used for batch testing? I kinda doubt there's any way to get to the bottom of this one...

Yeah but it kind of makes me curious what would have happened if she ever needed a warranty replacement...

TriangleAway?
Yeah I used triangle away after I rooted it

What will T-Mobile do if they find out if I'm rooted?

I need to take my phone up there because the phone is having problems with the battery and I've done everything I can. I have insurance on the phone and also have Android JB 4.1.2 and I'm rooted. Is there anyway to hide it or should I even care?

TriangleAway then Odin stock and factory reset if you can.
Do as said above by Aerowinder if possible, if not just play stupid.

What will happen if I show up without doing that? I really just need input on what's wrong and what I can do to fix it unless they'll give a new one since my phone looks completely brand new.

Do you guys think they'll give me a new phone or anything because my phone is in mint condition. There's not a speck of damage on it.

I wouldn't know what happens if you're going through T-Mobile but I assume you'll be fine if you're polite and explain you don't know what's going on, insist you've been with T-Mobile because of their excellent support if they make a big deal about it. Asurion the insurance company working with T-Mobile will take it anyways because they just fix it and that's it and resell it. And because you pay a monthly bill they're making money off of you regardless and you still have to pay a deductible.
But you SHOULD really return to stock.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 4
If they see that the phone is rooted, they'll just simply do nothing for you. That's why people say "your warranty is now void".
Do what is mentioned above or take your chances and hope the T-Mobile rep that is assisting you doesn't check to see if the phone is rooted or check the flash counter.

I most likely just try to extract some info from them so maybe I could fix it myself. I really don't want to pay them money for something not my fault.

I was hoping not to do that being that I just had to do factory reset like 2 weeks ago and I hate reinstalling everything but I guess I have to do it. I get the stock version from DocHolidays thread, right?

That should do the trick. And if you're on a stock build now, you may not have to factory reset, backup anyway.

I'm on the root66 version
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
Oh, simple enough then! Just go to SuperSU and unroot.
You could even try to temp unroot if you think that's all you'd need to do to hide it.
Befire you unroot though, do you have a custom recovery or kernel installed? If not, then run triangle away, then unroot. If you do, reflash root66, then use TA and unroot.

What's the problem with the battery?
I like the features I get with my stock build, but I'm considering a root for better control over my apps, (Greenify, permission control) so this thread seems like a relevant question.
Is Triangle Away and unrooting all it takes to make it appear that I haven't done anything?
The warranty issue is the only thing stopping me, it's saved me a bunch in the past...

If done in the correct order with no custom recovery or custom kernel, yes that should be all you have to do.

I rooted my phone once, but I will never do it again after what happened. Last year I rooted my GS3 and about a week later, my local T-Mobile store called my phone unexpectedly. The guy on the other end told me I was due for a price drop, but I would have to come into the T-Mobile store to sign the paperwork before it would take effect. 2 days later I stopped in to get the discount on my monthly payment. The T-Mobile employee said he would have to look at my phone just to verify that it was the correct serial number. He went into the back room and said he would be back in a few minutes. 10 minutes later, a police officer walks in the store and asks my name. I'm totally freaked out wondering what the deal is. He asks me to turn around a puts hand cuffs on me. The officer told me I was under arrested and being charged with "rooting a mobile device". I was booked and released, but I would watch what you do to your phone. Good luck.

Rooting a device isn't illegal. They can kiss my ring. Think about it, if it was illegal why are root apps allowed on Google Play? And also, why is XDA not been shut down?
Methinks something else happened there. Maybe you voided their warranty and tried getting a discount which may be against the rules. Or something. But I know for a fact this is legal. Unlocking is a different story however.
So my advice, root on my brothers it's the only damn freedom we have left here in America.

I would walk into the phone store and not leave until they give you a new device...warranty or not...
We have a staggering number of users that are reporting damaged devices after the update...and many that are getting tripped KNOX counters while taking a stock update on a completely stock device...
This update is a mess...and is the worst thing anyone could take right now...as it locks us down and voids our warranty if we even blink to many times...
Seriously...if the update broke it...take it back.....g
It is over a year old...so I doubt att would take it back...
