Easiest thing to do is to broadcast the SSID, connect your HOX and then hide it again. AFter that, it should automatically connect even when the SSID is hidden.
Though hiding a SSID doesn't do anything for security.....

XDA 2s Wifi Guide anyone?

Hi guys, I recently destroyed my XDA2 and got a 2s on the insurance
Bluetooth on WM2003 SE if fair poor, but I managed to upgrade the stack thinger to 3900..... so I'm not completely XDA illiterate.
However, the wifi baffles me! I have access to an unsecured wireless network with internet access, and my 2s will connect to it. When I go on the the internet on my XDA, even with wifi connected it still tries to connect GPRS to use the internet. If I keep clicking cancel, it will load the page (presumably through the wireless network's internet access).
It has become clear that I have no idea what I'm doing with regards to networking. Could someone post a quick guide as to how to set up the wifi (from scratch) so that when it finds an unsecured network it will automatically use it for the internet.
Sorry if there's already a thread on this but I really can't find it. Cheers guys
-Mike
just what i need as well, i have just bought a wifi router so i can use the internet on my xda2s.
using the wireless manger -> wireless LAN manager i get:
STATUS: connected to network
SSID: NETGEAR
TX RATE: AUTO
MODE:INFRASTRUCTURE
CHANNEL 11
BSSID: 00-09-5B-D7-DC-2A
MAC: 00-09-2D-0B-C0-A6
but even when i pull the Ethnet cable (forgot how its spelt) out of the back of the router it still stays connected. so im thinking its more my PC than the xda. the thing is the router came with no software so i have no idea if its connected properly. when i pull this Ethnet cable out of the wifi router o get network cable unplugged. The network card is Broadcom 440x 10/100 Integrated Controller. Which I have never used.
if anyone has a any ideas it would stop me pulling my hair out.
Sorry to hijack this thread

Mike, I dont think the wifi first and GPRS next works. It doesnt work properly on mine either. If I try a internet access via gprs and a local wifi is readily available, the system does not automatically switch to local wifi.....I think this could be a microsoft issue than a xda issue.

when u pull out the ethernet cable from the back of the router, can you still surf the net from you xda or PC?? that seems odd. So either you are not connecting to "your" own router, or someone else has a same router with unsecured setup and you were locked onto their service....if you follow what I mean. what happens if you kill the power to your router? you should definitely notice that the wifi service disappear in your xda and PC.
Dont expect a router to disappear by simply unplugging the ethernet cable, if the router is powered up, it will show up on your xda and the PC although obviously there will be no internet access.....
sorry if i wasn't clear. i meant i was still receiving a signal from the wifi router. i could never use the internet on the pda
update:
i can browse my pc files wirelessly using resco explorer, using the standard file explorer i can view the pc files using \\network/c and i have finally been able to connect to activesync.
however i still can not connect to the internet.
Any ideas, from looking on this forum it seems lots of peeps are having problems with this but nobody seems to have the answer
XDA Wi-Fi Solution....It Works!!!!
Hi,
I'm new to the forum and new to XDA2i (presumably XDA2s is same!) ....
I too had many frustrations connecting the wi-fi...but now I've cracked it, here's how.......
On first very first use (or following a hard re-set) device users are prompted to choose “What do you want WLAN to connect to?” The option bullets are ‘Internet’ or ‘Work’….’Work’ should be selected, this will connect them to the nearest WLAN (if this network is WEP encrypted it should be switched to ‘Open’ rather than ‘shared’ as is often the case).
Next prompt asks for any WEP Encryption ‘Pass Key’ to be input, when doing so omit any ‘-‘ between character pairs. Normal start-up should then be completed. Once device is up and running…..
From ‘Start’ pull-down on the ‘Today Screen’ select…. ‘settings’>’connections tab’>’connections icon’>’advanced tab’>’Select Networks’> pull-down ‘My Work Network’ > ‘OK’ out of selections to save and exit.
Go to ‘Wireless Manager’ in programs, select WLAN icon from main screen (which should turn green to show active), then select mini ‘WLAN’ icon from lower toolbar to see the status of the connection, quality of signal etc.
That did it for me......
Cheers

Adhoc Wifi internet sharing, HELP

I've been looking endlessly to find out how to share my internet connection with my mobile device over an adhoc wifi connection. I know most will say get router as they are very cheap but there must be a way to do this without a router.
I have enabled ICS on my internet connection in vista but the IP's that are assigned to both the pc and mobile connection when the devices are connected are temporary in the range of 169.x.x.x
The bright side of things is that I can share files seamlessly between the pc and the mobile device, which means all is good except for the internet. There must be a way to bind the device's ip to enable it to share the internet of the PC.
I have searched and searched and I have found nothing. Your comments and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, in other words HEEELLLPPP
You need to bridge the Wi-Fi and internet connection. You do this in Control Panel, Network & Sharing Center then 'Manage Network Connections' on the left hand side.
A new page will open showing your internet connection and your wireless connection. Hold down shift and left click on each of them. Next right click on one of the icons and select 'Bridge Connections'
Thanks MaskedMarauder, sadly though my broadband internet connection is through a dialup and hence I cannot bridge the dialup and the wireless connection. If that only can be done somehow, the problem would most definitely be solved.
Thanks for your help.
the way ya doin it with ICS will work. you need to goto properties/advanced...Internet connection sharing and hit the settings button..then tick the DHCP boxes, that will broadcast the IP so ya winmobile will get a DHCP IP address. thats for XP but it should be pretty similiar. I was having heaps of probs getting ics to work adhoc...
you may need to re setup ICS thou, because it wont work unless it uses the IP given when ya first set it up, eg. you cant have manually setup IP addresses in the wifi card.
Thanks Speedn, it looks like you've been through what I'm going through now. Unfortunately again on vista there's no way to adjust the DHCP for ics. I remember having similiar problems on xp but I've resorted to setting the ip's manually and all worked fine, downside was that I had to manually undo everything to connect to a regular access point. On vista that doesn't work though.
Vista is certainly doing something weird here with assigning the ip's.
Thanks anyway for your input.

Can't Connect to Wifi

Hey all,
I searched but couldnt find the same issue for the touch pro 2/ tilt 2, not sure if anyone has any ideas.
So every time I try to connect to ANY wifi, my phone goes through the attempting connect phase and drops the connection then says the connection is unavailable, refreshs the networks and shows the same connection is available.
Does anyone on have any ideas?
Thanks,
JC

WiFi help

Hy. I bought my defy one week ago and I have noticed some inconsistencies with the WiFi function. I got it tot work on a public network in a restaurant on the first try. At home however everything seems so random : I got it to connect to WiFi 5-6 times eventhough I don't have a router but most of the times I get the : "connection detected" notification but no internet access ( when i select the network in the wifi settings it says the signal is excellent ).
My modem is a Huawei EchoLife HG520s, I am running windows 7 x32, my phone was not rooted and i didn't make a blur account.. that doesn't work either.
I would really appreciate your help.

You are getting wifi signal at home but do not have a router? You mean a wifi router? If that's the case maybe you are picking up wifi signals from someone else's router and you cannot connect because you need to sign on? If you are having trouble getting on your own router, could you tell us what it is etc.?
You didn't set up a Blur account? Or you did and it doesn't work? Where are you located? If you tried to set it up and couldn't it may be because some markets (I hear) do not support Blur. For instance, there are some models of Defy that do not have Blur and that's probably why.
Sorry i should have made it clearer: i have not bought any kind of router but the modem i use could have a wifi router incorporate(i don't know if it does i lost its documentation).
I live in a house with no nearby sources of wifi and both networks (the one i use to connect to the internet from my pc and the wifi i find if i scan wth my phone have the same name)
I live in Romania and everytime i try to set up a Blur account and click the start button it cancels.

Is there any way you can temporarily disable your modem's wifi security just so you can get on to see if that works? Make sure to turn it back on after, this is just to see if that's the cause of the trouble.
Also about setting up a Blur account - did you try that at home, or at an open Wifi area (eg. the restaurant)? If it doesn't work at home then I guess it's worth trying it at the restaurant or any other place where you can get the connection to work.
Well the network i get here at home is 'open' and i get a connection everytime.. just no internet access on my phone and the computer doesn't seem to recognise the connection (happen exactly he same even on the times i had internet access)

exactly what happened to me. is not a router's problem but a DNSes problem.
you must enter the router and disable the "automatic DHCP". enter in the settings of the phone, wifi, advanced DNS settings automatically if not found. and it work.
P.S. after this if you have problems with your computer, right click the connection, and then do "problem solving". good luck ...

the only problem is that I can't seem to find a router in my devices.. i have a internet modem that might have a wi-fi router incorporated
How does the computer connect to the modem if it uses USB i'm not too sure what you can do but if it uses ethernet what I recommend you do is click on start, and type in "cmd" when this loads type "ipconfig /all" this will then bring up all the details of your connection. What you are looking for is the default gateway, this will be the address of your router. With this add "http" and the default gateway number into a browser, you should then be able to get into the routers config and then you can follows powertony84's guide.
Well i'm pretty sure the network I connect to with my phone is mine because i just changed its security level to WEP using bobdigby advice. But I got lost afterward.
I have attached a prinscr of the DHCP setting i can fiddle with and i really appreciate your help so far
Any idea what channel i should use? i got a tip to chage the channel but i don't know into which one
I don't use any router but I turn my laptop, which supports wifi, into a wifi hotspot so that my defy can use wifi within my apartment. It's wonderful!

WiFi with a Repeater.

HI guys, i have set a WiFi repeater in my house but every time i go to the 1st floor o have to turn WiFi off and on to make it connect to the repeater, is that normal?
Thanks in advance.
What kind of repeater is it? Netgear? Belkin?
Have you made the SSID the same as your main network? I found that when I did that, my repeater worked flawlessly with my wireless stuff in the house... didn't believe that that stuff actually worked but it was really good to see.
Works fine on my Nexus devices. It doesn't sound normal that you're having that issue - maybe try a reset on the repeater and your main router just to be sure.
It's a Tp-Link, but the thing is i have to turn Wifi off and on on my GNex to make it connect to the repeater, if i don't, it stays connected to the router downstairs, even with a strong signal from the repeater on the 1st floor.
Is this supposed to happen?
Same Issue
I have the same problem with a Nexus 7 / Android 4.2 and a TP-Link repeater.
Android wont switch from Router to repeater even if signal strength is Router: ~50% / Repeater: ~100%.
Switching Wifi off and on works. But there has to be an other solution.
"Best Wifi" is an app that should do this if I understood right, but it did not work for me.
Has anyone a great idea?
Thx a lot!
//edit Repeater and Router have got the same SSID. This is necessary for me.

You could try checking "avoid poor connections" in wifi advanced settings. That might help in auto switching between the two. I gave up on having the same ssid on my router and repeater. My problem was I was auto switching between the two and during the switch there was no data. So now I use 2 ssids; connect to the router when upstairs, and the repeater downstairs.

Thanks for your help. Android 4.2 does not seem to have that option. In the advanced options I set up static IP adress. There was no checkbox like that to be found.
I'm digging up this old thread because it was found easiest in google search and because I have the same question. It seems more and more we have to switch off wifi and then turn it back on to connect to the repeater. I have the same security and same SSID on both. There has to be a solution to this issue by now. Maybe someone can chime in? An S3, S4, S4 Straight Talk and F7 are all doing it.
