Right, so this is probably a long and tired question, but I can't seem to find it, please link me if I've done that.
So I have been running this version of CM10 and the latest tripndroid kernel
I decided to try out Bricked's Kernel
So I made a Nandroid backup using CMW, and thought eh if I break it I'll just restore it.. how wrong I was.
So I broke it, after I installed the Modules for the new kernel, it would just bootloop, so okay I give up I need sleep.. run CWM and restore the backup I just made.
Backup loads, phone boots up.. wait a sec no WIFI or Network... check settings... that kernel I tried to use?!
I guess I have to start again from scratch.. joy.
But seriously, I was led to believe that a nandroid backup would restore EVERYTHING the way it WAS Including the kernel? I guess I was wrong.
You need to also restore the boot.img from the backup folder

Just a little confused about restoring after wiping and flashing ROM. I will have Nandroid and Titanium backups. What do I restore. I'm assuming the Nandroid is for reverting back and the Titanium apps+data is what I want to use with the new ROM. Sorry if this is dumb but I don't want to screw this process up!
I've also posted about running UnrevokedForever first or not. I just don't like that it can't be undone. I understand that I can still upgrade the radio to 2.05 and flash a custom 2.2 ROM but is this not a good idea? Am I much better off applying s-off and going that route and using the newer radio?

You use Titanium to get all your user apps back on your phone without having to go to the market and reloading them one at a time. Nandroid is what you use when things go crash, boom, bang, and you have to go backward to fix things. Hope that's understandable.

Might be a pretty basic qtn but heres the deal.
I took a nandriod backup of dk28 (no root) and then flashed it with nebula rom. Now since the rom was new, all my data/contacts/apps etc are gone obviously.. I am wondering if I did a restore of the nandroid restore, will it restore all that (ie sms/email/contacts/data/apps) or is it used to go back to stock rom only, ie it will remove my custom rom and put back the stock as it was pre flashing nebula?
All I need is a way to keep the custom rom but also restore my sms/email/apps etc.

It will restore everything excatly how it was when you saved it. Including your Texts/Mail etc that were in your inbox at the time you saved. You are basically going back to the exact point where you saved. You can create backups for every rom you have, it is not just for putting your phone back to stock. I always back up stock first, so I can always go back if needed.

If you restore your backup? Yes you will loose your custom rom, unless you make a backup of that too (this is what I do). So you can go back and forth between the 2 if needed. Is that what you were wondering?
basically i want to switch back and forth the roms but keep my data intact.. right now after flashing the new rom.. i have obviously lost all my sms/emails/apps etc.. is there a one click solution which will restore all my data on every new rom i install?
edit: Also , I did take a titanium backup before I flashed the new rom.. but i didnt do a complete (ALL) backup, since I couldnt find a option to backup all. I had to choose each service/app/etc to backup.. so I ended up backing up all the stuff that I understood..but restoring them hasnt restored my sms/email data yet.
Do an advanced restore->restore /data in cwm.
I've had pretty good luck keeping my contacts, apps, and settings this way. Some people see weird force close issues after restoring /data. Check it out and see if it works for you.
thaniks.. i ll give it a try .. i thought about it.. but wasnt sure what exactly it does.
did that .. now that removed the rom manager and spare parts.. not sure what else it did.. but it did bring everything sms/apps/emails back ..
i guess i can install rom manager from the market..
If you only restore data your custom rom will stay. It will only restore your apps and app data. If you are restoring data from a rom on the same file system, you should be fine.
In other words, flashing VIPERrom 4.0.3 EXT4, then backing up, then flashing Bonsai 1.1.4 on RFS, then restoring data is not a good idea.

Nandroid restore on Custom ROM
I own a Xperia Arc(LT 15i)..rooted,unlocked...
I have Cyanogenmod, stable version running on my phone now...
I had taken a nandroid backup using CWM Auto-installer...
But now I wanna know how can i restore my apps that i had with Stock ROM...i tried a advanced backup on /data alone but then, its not booting up if i do so...
Please help..

Your data is incompatible with CM. You will need to download apps again unless you have a Titanium Backup.

I tried doing this with a NAND BU that I made with a ROM I had flashed... it got buggy and I ended up restoring my NAND BU from the stock ROM. Then I wanted to show some one the ROM I had flashed before and tried to restore the NAND BU I made of that particular ROM and it got 3 dots into the restore then said it couldnt be completed.
I am wondering if it couldnt be completed b/c the NAND BU was corrupted some how - or if this is actually not some thing you can do...
any info on this would be helpful...

yes you can do that. before you restore you may want to wipe the cache and dalvik just to make sure that is all cleared out (unless you also do backups of the cache)
What recovery are you running when the restore failed? i am guessing amon, so when you get an error you should move the log to sd so you can check out what exactly the error was

Ok, I thought I could but I was thrown off by the failed attempt. I always do a FULL wipe when flashing from one ROM to another... and I'm not sure how to back up the cache...
The main back ups I preform are the NAND, Titanium and occasionally I use MyBackUpPro...but I only use the last one for contacts and texts...
I always use Amon_Ra... I am currently using 2.2.1... I am assuming that the NAND BU was corrupt some how.
I am trying to think if I made the back up with the same version of Ra or not and I assume that shouldnt make any differance. Now the only other variable would be that I changed the name of the main file - but I always do that with all my NAND BUs and I didnt have any problem restoring my stock froyo that was named in the same format...(ex: StockFroyo-011911 <~~ which worked Vs. WarmTwoPointTwo-012911 <~~ which did not work)...
You can make backups of multiple and re-flash them at your will [just know which is which, by naming them.] Also, do a cache and dalvik wipe before hand, and you're good to go.

No problem, I love it... Also check out last months favorite app. I love that one too cause you can totally customize your texts and what not - It took me almost 4 hours of messing with settings to figure out EVERYTHING that handcent does...

If you use rom manager, or amon ra, you can rename them, so its easy to tell.

Yeah, I knew you could rename them... I have been doing that - but for some reason I cant get my NAND BU of myns warm twopointtwo to work, I guess I'll just reflash it... I dunno...
If your battery is less than 30%-40% or something, Amon-Ra won't restore or backup. If it's not working, plug in your phone and try again. Also, I would upgrade to RA-2.3. Much better IMO, only version since 1.8 that I haven't had any trouble with. I had also sorts of issues with backups and restores either taking FOREVER or just plain not completing. For the first time, I'm at a point where i have like 5 ROMs on my phone and switch whenever I feel like.

Cool, yeah I may have had a bad battery level, I dont remember what my batery % was when I tried it but that makes sense... thanks, Also with the 2.3 I have it - I just havent flashed it yet... Thanks again
I have been rooted and flashed 15-20 roms all flawless until today, when I had one that failed, TGF cwm recovery, I was abel to recover my backup, but does this not restore it to original rom (meaning with setting, theams etc) If not is there a program out there that will back up your desktop as is, because its a pain to reinstall and set everything up again, espicaly if you are reverting to a backup of a rom. resign it resetup keyboard, theam etc.
Im not a noob just one to clock work restore.

It completly restores everything. I use it all the time to flash back to my daily driver. Desktop, Web pages, call Logs, SMS messages, all get restored.

if you made a nandroid it restores EVERYTHING back to the way it was...including the themes, keyboard, apps whatever it is...idk what you did, but it certainly wasn't a nandroid or else everything would have been restored
there is no currently no method other than a nandroid that works flawlessly
setting up homescreens and themes over again are a way of life when you flash new roms
it sucks...but whatever...if you dont like it, dont flash new roms (not directed at you...im saying in general)

There must be something wrong with your backup because when you restore a backup, it restores exactly how it was saved. Meaning that if you backed it up once you had everything set up already then it would have restored with everything already set up. That includes settings,themes,apps and even widgets. So unless your backup is before you set everything up then there is something wrong.
ok guess this is a noob question then, nandroid and cwm backup the same? because I use cwm as my backup option because it works on kernal level, or at least before os loads, so I assumed this would be good enough. Running the most current version of CWM.
EDIT ok stupid me for not doing a google search, got my answer, which raises another question can cwm and nandroid co exist from the little bit I read both require hard keypresses at boot along with the phones own hard key patter. MAn if I ever felt stupid I do now lol. Kept reading about nandroid but thought it was CWM

The best way to go is go to recovery, then go to back up and restore, select back up, wait until finished, and then reboot system and you are set.

I always backup to internal havent had errors that way. Only if backed up to external is when i get errors

I believe cwm backups and nandroids are interchangeable terms now. It was probably different in the past when using different backup methods but they have the same purpose.. which is an exact backup of you device.
What app do I use to back my phone up to do a complete restore to where it was pre-flash. TB only restores the apps and data but not the Launcher and the way i had everything set up pre-flash. Any help would be appreciated. thanks in advance.

Long been A fan but I just completed my first successful flash, and I used TWRP 2.6.3.1. So could you be a little more specific. I appreciate your help but I have been searching and there are explanations out there i just don't understand them. thanks again in advance.
I think 2.6.3.1 has been working for some people but I would recommend flashing .4rc2 or higher. I think all the kinks have been worked out since .4rc2. You need to hit backup and rmemeber what is ticked. Now untick that and backup efs first and store that separate and maybe even backup to sdcard or computer. Then go back and tick at least system and data for your nandroid. If you plan on flashing kernels, do boot.IMG too. Not sure about cache. I did it anyways for hahas my first backup. I don't know if you need to reset up your phone or not. And I think there have been problems with titbackup restores because of Samsung and Knox stuff. Need to read up in that for specifics. I've seen a couple custom kernel descriptions say their kernel fixes TB issues but like I said need to look around on your own as I don't really use TB. Had too many small issues so I manually cherry pick data I need and just start fresh each phone. Also been awhile since I've flashed anything because my note2 had insane chip so I didn't do anything crazy to trigger SDS. I spent all weekend researching recovery myself before I proceeded. Make sure you do the efs backup first!! In cade something bad happens youmight need that.

Thanks for this informative post.
Just to verify that it is recommended that we back up the EFS separately then backup the DATA/SYSTEM/BOOT partitions next? I would like to make sure that I will have everything needed just in case I/phone mess up somewhere along the line of flashing ROMS and themes. There seems to be more occurrences of boot-loops with the GN3 than there ever was with the GN2.
When restoring, I presume we just flash the backups then reboot as usual?

Yeah. I backed up my efs first. Then backed up to my laptop. Then I backed up modem for haha's and to laptop. Then I backed up boot, system and data. If you don't wipe data when you're flashing around you should only need to flash boot and system. I haven't run into problems yet so I havent had to flash data. It's always been there and settings and apps have been fine.
