[ROOT][ODIN]*UPDATED*OFFICIAL JELLYBEAN*-Root Without Increasing Flash Count-NO WIPE! - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

This is outdated and here for reference. Go here for the easier up to date method
Same procedure as the original guide here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1774722 . I am aware that this is wothless to most people. I know theres triangle away and all that. However Ive noticed some still prefer to go this route. Plus makes a good place to grab the official tar and keep root. So to help those people out here is a prerooted. LJ7+LI3.TAR for use in odin that will give you root leaving your flash count at 0. Official binary status. This is the latest OTA. This has been compressed in a 7z archive. Extract before using
Prerooted LJ7 Jellybean w/o data wipe

is this really the offical JB?

Yes the one sextape posted last night/ this morning is official. This is the same thing with root added. If it was not official then it would trigger your flash count. This does not

Finally. Im glad Samsung didnt pull an Epic fail like the GB and especially the froyo bull they pulled with the epic 4g.

Its days like today I feel bad for all those poor sammy phones out there that never left gb/froyo

I believe you may want to go ahead and explain what u mean hy official. This as of yet has not been confirmed as official OTA but is an official leak.

i mean http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33174377&postcount=1 and this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33175014&postcount=6
In addition to the fact that this flashes a kernel modem and recovery which pass and do not trigger the flash count. All i need to see to consider this official. If thats an issue for you then http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1639

Never said it was an issue. I am saying the only reason this does not add to your counter is due to the fact that it is Signed by Samsung for installation through Odin. It is in fact official due to this fact but is not confirmed an official OTA as of yet thus not being the official final release that will be OTA until we confirm this information. It may or may not be, just correcting this information to what we know until further notice.

Well even if there were updates made to it before it was pushed out i think its safe to `say this will be the go-to tar for unbricking and what-not. Highly unlikely Samsung will make another tar after this. I mean other than this the only other legit odin tar for the phone is the LEN tar and look how outdated that is. Plus the modem thing. The phone refuses to flash any modem that is not LEN. (or LJ7)
LF9 LG2 LG8 and LI3 will all fail when attempting to flash with odin. This and the first LEN are the only ones to pass on that. And this comes with a new recovery as well. Which also wont trip the counter. Which means the tar contains signed images in it, unlike the other leaks. Just too much that points to this being the one. Regardless I guess we'll see but in the mean time, call it what you want. Or ask sextape i did link that tar at the bottom of my post.

So will this wipe everything? And if I read right, it comes with a recovery too right?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda app-developers app

New Recovery yes. As far as wiping I cant confirm. Seems like half said yes other half said no. I cant specify because i flashed it with Nand wipe checked and I repartitioned so naturally mine was wiped regardless. If your worried about it wiping then uncheck auto-reboot and pull the battery when its done. Leave it off for a few seconds and you should skip recovery when you turn it back on.

yo guys does it matter what rom we are on or can we just run the .exe? im on miui right now. should i go back to a tw rom first? thanks guys
ps ive hardbricked one s3 when i first got it like a dumbass so i just wanna make sure!

Dont think it matters i would boot into recovery and do a wipe first tho

Unzip and put file into PDA in ODIN and flash away! If you need ODIN, it is attached below.
*WARNING* DO NOT CHECK RE-PARTITION OR ANYTHING ELSE. ONLY AUTO-REBOOT AND F. RESET TIMER SHOULD BE CHECKED.
If you need more information about this file and what it is/what to do with it, read the stickies at the top of this forum to learn more about ODIN and what it is used for. This file is provided mostly for people who like me who prefer to odin a stock rom and tweak it themselves. It will also prove INVALUABLE from here on out for when you need to unroot your phone (send into t-mobile/samsung, just want it un-rooted).
IF YOU WANT ROOT:
I also attached the latest superuser and CWM recovery for those who want to root.
Put the recovery.tar in the pda slot and flash for CWM recovery.
Then install the attached superuser inside CWM recovery to have full root!
FYI: It's a known issue that superuser usually does not "stick" on the first try. This is with ANY ROM for our phones. Just keep flashing it (usually 2 to 3 times)until it says installation complete.
THIS WILL NOT AFFECT YOUR DOWNLOAD/FLASH COUNTER (+)

Nope i believe Mr. X is making that as we speak. This is for a full ODIN flash.

Can't wait for your link, can I use CWM to flash? Is the firmware already rooted or
factory fresh one?
Wow you guys...just wow...

Will be factory fresh. Will be like any other stock rom, not rooted. Root it via odin like we have always done for all of our roms. I think it's best to just leave completely intact so we always have an option to get our phones back to 100% factory. The CW flashable zips and rooted custom roms are on their way.

Do you mean FH13? The reason it isn't taking the update is because it has a custom recovery. The device must have stock recovery, and in my experience, no removed stock apps if running stock w/root.

You can just save the hassle of all this stock recovery if you want... by using this one click (non rooted) update to FH13
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1835033
You should be able to find the complete one click odin method that does not do a data wipe. So of you upgraded to fh13 and want to go back to ff18. Then find the one click no data wipe and that may do it. If you want tl go back to el29 do the same thing. However going back from ics to without a data wipe could prove faulty. But you could odin back to ff18 then do a titanium back up to back up all apps and data. Then do a complete odin based wipe back to el29 then try and restore via titanium. That may give you the all around solution you guys are looking for. But it's all theoretical have not tried this exact method myself but should work.

Is FH13 being pushed by Samsung or something? I was wondering why the notification looked a bit different from previous ota's then I noticed the update is coming from the update Samsung software section and not the update firmware like in the past. Just curious since that option never gave us an update before lol

Need some help guys!?

My friends has a gs3 he purchased on release day and rooted it. The past week he accepted two ota's which broke his root. So I'm trying to root it for him but here's where the confusion kicks in. On sprints website it actually show these updates are old and not new and there's two more recent ones he never got pushed to him. Right now the phone is on LG2 and won't update any further. What do I need to do to be up to date with root. Should I just look for a way to root this build or try updating it. By the way I haven't seen any root methods for this build which is why I'm asking. Thanks in advance to anyone who responds

The method he used to root it in the first place should work again. Try that.
Then once it's rooted again go to this thread. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099
Download the file "LI3 STOCK WITH AUTO COUNTER RESET" in the first post and flash the file in recovery. That will put the phone to 100%stock, unrooted, on the latest build.
From that point, if he wants to, he can reroot the phone and install the latest TWRP recovery. After that, tell him not to accept any OTA updates. Come back here to the development forum and someone will have the update in flashable form so that root isn't lost.

Yup thats the most easy way of doing it. you say ur not rooted but do you have custom recovery? If so then re rooting before the flash wouldn't be necessary.
It will not wipe data however its recommended that you do. granted it will probably work just fine if it being installed over top of a stock Rom. Then to keep root/recovery just follow the instructions in the post

Yes it is stupid proof but it also makes you have to take an extra step to reset the count. On my phone I just deal with the Odin OC which don't mess with your counts and come rooted then mobile Odin for the rest. Never have to worry about a flash count. But anyways thanks for all the help guys! I'm going to try and get this done tonight. Even though we both going for the note 2 in just a matter of days

[Q] Tmobile update on stock rooted rom

Can I let the Tmobile Update download and flash if I am rooted on the stock ROM and have Clockwork recovery? I would use ota root keeper to disable root also before the update.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
When it is rooted even if you try to use the OTA update it won't let you, while rooted, you could alternatively flash the update via ODIN w/ root support. Or try some of the sweet ROMs available , the reason I switched to a custom ROM because I was going to have to erase my phone anyway if I wanted to update, so I thought why not just try a custom ROM?
I use LiquidSmoothRC7, but if you want a more stock feel with touchwiz you can try Wicked, Wicked stays true to the "official stock ROMs" and just adds roots and tweaks the ROM to make it as stable as possible
If you are rooted, with a custom recovery, there is absolutely no reason for you to be playing around with Odin or OTAs... your updates are available in the development section

go to doc's thread, flash his firmware update, reboot, then flash whatever JB ROM you desire. there is absolutely no need to ODIN your phone with the OTA fw, resetting your device completely. you just need to make sure you flash the latest firmware first before you flash a ROM that is based off the latest OTA

Some of those 10 partitions that are getting rewritten are... for one, your recovery... so that makes 9 actually...
My point is, and I'm not trying to be argumentative in any way, merely objective, is that unless it is reformatting the ext4 partition to new file structure (for example) there should be no need to do this. I suppose I would ask somebody to define in depth "rewritten" and how exactly this is being done and why. Every single update we have had since the release of this device I have not once updated my own device with odin merely to put it back to stock. And I have run into zero issues. Seems like a waste of time to me unless there is something highly critical being restructured entirely. In the end, its all the same disk, and disk size for any given partition.

If you are on LH2, with that same baseband, I would go ahead and update your baseband via docs packaged update in his thread, and just reboot, then move on to the jelly bean updates. Do a factory reset through recovery before you flash the JB ROM tho since you are coming from a completely different version of android.

If you want to avoid all the weird miscellaneous problems listed in the Q&A forum, update using Odin and the rooted rom in Docs' thread. If you choose not to use Odin do not be surprised if odd things happen.
Just stating my experience, I was rooted stock ics and ran the ota update. I was able to update, keep root and ran stock jelly bean without any problems at all.
Now I am running frosty jelly and still no problems at all. I am not saying for you to do it (dont want anyone blaming me) just stating that it can be done. Do whats most comfortable for you.

Again looking for some technical clarity here. Haven't had a single issue myself. With anything. And I have not factory odined my device once since I got it. It is not critical to do this, otherwise I would be suffering from "weird miscellaneous problems"
Hopin doc can jump in here and set me straight if I am wrong, but it seems to me you will be fine just updating your radios and then moving to the latest build (4.1.1) as long as you clear data before flashing your ROM of choice

You could very well be correct. Not trying to debate you.
but....I am seeing thread after thread of issues. Based on experience I suggest using the full proof method. I have updated many phones using many different methods and never have problems, but apparently many have had issues.

but....I am seeing thread after thread of issues. Based on experience I suggest using the full proof method. I have updated many phones using many different methods and never have problems, but apparently many have had issues.
I also hope Doc chimes in on this thread.

If I understand the process correctly
ODIN flashes the entire phone OS like the kernel, Rom, baseband, etc
Using recovery to flash only updates the Rom,recovery, boot, kernel

Sorry, I will clarify, I am curious to know why Odin is such a critical issue. I know how it works as far as it being a flashing tool
I am not sure maybe it's just preference and how much you want to use your computer and what how much you want to download etc

The file used to flash with Odin is much larger because it is a complete rom. The OTA is a patch that attempts to patch and modify existing files.
I basically said that on the last post not the one you quoted

Stock Samsung recovery for AT&T galaxy s3 i747

Stock Samsung recovery pulled straight from stock firmware and packaged as a Odin flashable tar file. I decided to do this for those who may want or need to flash the stock recovery. I have tested this and worked fine on my phone. I am not sure if it will work with any other carrier besides AT&T so if you try it do so at your own risk and if it works report it and I will add any other confirmed carriers that it works for. I am not responsible if you brick, melt or blow up your phone so don't cry to me lol...
Below is the link to download the tar file. If anyone wants to make a cwm flashable zip feel free to and post a link to where it can be downloaded....
Edit....
It has been confirmed that this will work on Bell devices also...

Samsung doesn't have hboot. Only recovery and download (Odin) modes.

Odin mode or download mode is for flashing a new firmware. I mainly posted this stock recovery for the ones using a custom recovery like cwm or twrp and just wanted to flash the stock recovery back so they could update their phones via a OTA update. If you are running a recovery like cwm or twrp and your phone tells you that you have a ota firmware update available it will not let you install it with a custom recovery. To update via a OTA update you must have the stock Samsung recovery. So now anyone using cwm or twrp can just flash this stock recovery download everoot from the play store for free then run ever root update their phone run ever root again and never even lose root privaledge on their phone....

Has anyone tried it on a canadian i747m yet ?
I'm not willing to be the first one to try it out as I can't afford to brick it due to software incompatibility. :/
Thanks for posting this Gary! And good to see ya here, we gotta get the remaining skyrocket crew to join the dark side lol
Does anyone know if stock recovery is required to perform official OTA updates with the S3 on AT&T? I remember needing stock recovery for updates to the S2 Skyrocket, but I'm not sure if anything's changed with the S3 (and I did see a Rogers user say he was able to get the jb OTA while using TWRP for recovery, so maybe it isn't necessary?).
EDIT: Also wanted to mention, in case anyone is wondering, this .tar does work with Mobile Odin Pro. Just used it successfully.
From what I've heard yes you do need the stock recovery to ota update on the s3. Again I hadn't tried it but that's what I hear anyway.
Oh and its good to be here. I still have my rocket. Its used for highly experimental testing and flashing lol.. I've soft bricked it three times since I've had my s3 in less than a month lol. I just hope my next experiment whatever that may be isn't my last lol...

As far as I know the stock 3e recovery has not changed, it's the same for any build number for the S3. The stock recovery is on a partition separate from the rom so it shouldn't matter which build you're on.
(99% sure on this but someone please correct me if I'm wrong)

Stock 3e recovery? Not familiar with this, so research seems in order. Thanks.
Stock 3e recovery == Stock Samsung recovery
However, I'm still curious to know if the stock recovery is indeed the same for any build number / variant of the North American GS3...
Anyone know if this triggers the counter?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747M
It did not trigger my flash counter....
And I also agree with skrambled I think the stock recovery is for all builds of the S3

Worked perfect on my att gs3 running jelly bean. Thanks for posting. I would also be curious if this works on the other variants as well.
No tripping of the flash counter either.
