Samsung Galaxy S II gets Android 2.3.6 update

I haven't seen this posted anywhere yet, and yes, I know there's another thread about the "confirmed" Dec update from a top dev but I figured this is worthy of its own thread. Sounds like the update might only be for the GSM versions of the phone, and we might have to wait for our specific Epic Touch update, but things must be close at this point.

Carriers hold back updates??? They would never do such thing.
I know some updates the carrier has to purchase from the manufacturer and some are free. I don't quite understand where the dividing line is but having to pay for an update would surely slow down a carrier's intention of pushing an update.

P.S. Samsung released Android 3.2 update for my Galaxy Tab 8.9
this past week. Although it fimproved a few things, it also slowed
down my device. My results were confirmed by a dev on XDA who
built one of the custom ROMS for the 8.9 Tab. POINT IS and as
aforementioned, Samsung is trying. Same applies to Sprint and
our E4GT.

so when they do release this for our phones, will i need to unroot to install it? or can someone make a side load for it so we don't have to? any idea?

This confuses me that people unroot to root again for updates. As long as I have been a part of forums any new updates always come out in a rooted version or a Rom upgrade. We got to do better reading and understanding of what we are doing when we root our phones. This is not a dig directed at you but the million times I hear somebody ask that same question. Smdh

Amen brotha!

Once the first XDA user who knows what they're doing gets an update, it will be posted here so fast that many will find out about it here, not by getting it via OTA. They push them out over several days so most likely there will be a full stock tar to Odin before many of us get it.

It's funny how quickly people forget about history when trying to assign blame.

It does make me wonder why AT&Ts Skyrocket just got 2.3.6 pushed to it on 11/22 though, which was released almost 2 months after Sprint's E4GT. Then again, why the Skyrocket and not AT&T's non-LTE GSII? Who knows why these guys do what they do.

It's GSM.
There's very little, if any difference, between the international version of the SGS2 and the At&t version.

People also seem to forget that the Moment got Froyo before the Hero did.

Given Samsung's spotty support for CDMA devices, I'd rather they spend time on ICS.

Why is there no ICS ROM for epic touch?

Google opened the source. I believe Samsung did as well. There's a ROM for international s2 working with TW is there something i'm missing? Also, why is google allowing TW on ICS I thought the purpose of ICS was to eliminate having to wait for manufacturer/carrier updates and consolidate phones and tablets to the one OS to maintain and innovate.

The Google's Android Alliance is dead. I believe that since manufacturer's are already going back on their word, they're still changing things up a bit. Besides, who would get an HTC if it ran the same software as Samsung's phones? (Or vice versa). The unique feel between all of these devices are marked by their UI, otherwise the phone with the best hardware will dominate all. (although I wouldn't mind an AOSP ICS rom for ourselves.)

More money could be invested in the hardware instead of cutting corners to save money for the programming. The net result would increase the lead over iPhone users. Which gives us better hardware, immediate updates, and more software as app Sellers would favor writing for Android. Just my 2 cents.

The Nexus builds are nice but they aren't perfect. I use it as my daily on my NS4G but the battery life isn't the greatest. The devs probably decided to just wait for the official since we are supposedly going to be one of the next phones to get it. They could do it but there would be no 4g and Google quietly pulled the OTA update temporarily due to battery life issues. The gapps tax my battery big time..especially Google+. We will get our turn. In the meantime, try one of the themes with ADW EX or Go Launcher and you can have the look

No official build yet.(period)
I just want you all to know that there is no official build at all for this rom yet. No beta at least. Sprint doesn't have it yet either. Sprint isn't testing the rom nor has Samsung sent them the rom. So, don't expect the update in the next month.
The way is works is Samsung sends it to Sprint. Sprint test it and Samsung fixes any issues. Sprint test it again and when they find no issues it gets sent to the consumer. Sprint doesn't even have it yet to test it.
And, there are people working on making a non official build but it doesn't work great yet. It is missing a lot of key features. I am thinking we might see some usable roms at the end of the month.
Sprint is currently fixing the ICS for the Nexus S. When that is complete they will start on the Epic. You might see that update in 2 weeks. The epic should be done in 6-8 weeks(this is a early guess, I will know more in 3 weeks).

Development is horrible for the epic touch on xda because every single thread, regardless of the original post, turns into a flame war. I have been told by two devs that this is the reason they stopped developing for the epic touch on xda.

I Would Never Have Bought This Phone....

I know that's a dramatic title, but it's true. This was my first Android phone, purchased 14 months ago. I quickly found xda, rooted and got s-off. I have enjoyed this community, the developers have been amazing. I have stuck mostly with AOSP ROMs but have played with at least 20 different ones off and on. I love the open source community, and the ability to tweak everything with my phone. That said, my contract will be up in the spring, and when looking at a new phone there are only two options:
the new iPhone - I know that is traitorous, and I probably won't go there (I've invested too much in this OS and in paid apps), but iPhone's ecosystem has so much reliability. There is only a few phone models out there, so you know what you're going to get. When iOS updates, everyone has access to it. It just works. It is less customizable out of the box, but once jailbroken gives many of the same opportunities as Android
a "pure Google" phone (ie Nexus) - this is realistically where I am headed, and where I "hope" the whole Android community is headed. Steve Jobs, love him or hate him, revolutionized the way a cell phone was sold when he made the deal with AT&T. I hope that Google can do the same. I love everything about my HTC Incredible 2, the construction and hardware and functionality are great, but that cannot make up for the fact that ICS was released on October 11, 2011. That's TEN MONTHS AGO! Do you understand what that means in tech time? The average contract length is 1 or two years. That means if you purchased this phone on a one year contract in October, you will possibly never get the ICS update intended for your phone. That is ridiculous. You can point blame wherever you want, but the bottom line is that it's unacceptable. Now if you have a "pure Google" phone you get all those updates immediately, and you also get a group of hungry developers that gather to the phone just because of that. Now, before I hear "just download Aerovan's CM9 it works great" - I have, and it does for the most part, but that's not the point. We should have had fully functioning ICS for 10 months now, and we should have had a fully functioning Jelly Bean for one month. Instead, we may get ICS before Christmas.
tl;dr - buy a "pure Google" phone, the delay in OS updates is not worth getting any other phone (even if it has better "x")

Actually, the current JB update for the GN has terrible battery. ICS 6-8 hours, JB 4-6 hours.
I have 50% of battery at the end of the day with moderate use with my dinc 2

To open: every thing just works. Android just works, wp7&8 just works ios just works. this "just works" nonsense is part of apples campaign. My dinc2 just worked out of the box I chose to make it better at the cost of adding some instability.
The only phone that I know of that didn't work and no amount of dev work can fix was my old dx2.
Here's the truth in the matter ios gives you and every owner the same experience while with android you are given an experience but you can also choose to make your own. Ios is out dated. IPhone hardware is outdated, Apple knows this that's why they sue and patent some of the most retarded things in the name of anti-competitive spirit.
Why go backwards in tech when you can move forward. Go for pure Google. Then you can have a great phone with the latest tech, open software with timely ota updates.
But its your money. Choose to be an isheep or choose to be a Herder its your call.

Yes, the Incredible2 is an amazing phone.
I would say this is the best phone that can handle any OS till now (Android).
but as I am in India, I am not able to use this phone at its best due to not having proper ICS ROM which support Indian CDMA network.
I tried UKB 1.1x, it works great with GSM, but it did not detect CDMA UIM card...
other than this, this phone is amazing....... and beautifull.....

@OP. I agree option 2 makes most sense and is what I wish to do in the future as well. However, DON'T go with Verizon for your next Nexus phone... Apparently VZW is still delaying the JB update for Verizon's GNex... Appalling news and a slap on the face for the whole Nexus brand... If Asus can release JB on an non-nexus tablet (read TF300) faster than it can come on a nexus phone, what the hell should we do now!? VZW is like a god damn bully who is just plain mocking us and taunting us... It is not even trying to embrace technology and attempts to live in the old days... Screw them. I suppose it makes sense to go for a Nexus device on a GSM network. The way it is MEANT to be! :/ so AT&T (or T-mobile) it is...

Aren't a vast majority of the carriers GSM (excepting Reliance and 1 by Tata I think)?

Yes, I think I will only purchase a phone from the Google Play store. When my contract expires I don't want to be locked up in another two year deal.

There isn't evidence that they are purposely doing it, but what litetaker says is true. Thus the Verizon Galaxy Nexus is not a "pure Google" phone as advertised.

Now the fact of the matter is Gnexes on Verizon are yet to receive the OTA for JB which was released 41 days ago. Clearly, it is the carrier's incompetence that is causing the delay though it is indeed doubtful whether VZW is doing it purposely or just out of pure incompetence... Whatever it is, it is taking way too long FOR a Nexus device. It is down right laughable and I am not happy about it...
On the other hand, several reports online ([1], [2]) suggest that JB OTA is already out on AT&T and other GSM based carriers... :/
That is simply uncool by VZW AND Sprint, might I add... I dunno what is up with CDMA versions of Gnex. But it is just uncool!

Samsung is not innocent. Blame them also. Samsung can easily say no to the major carriers and push the update to us through kies. We will not get the update until 30-60 days after the next flagship device from att. All of the iphone update come directly from apple. The carriers have no say.

Ditto. Another post that was moved to the Q&A section mentioned that there are already three AT&T leaks in existence. AT&T is probably too busy ensuring that their bloatware is compatible with the ROMs, I mean, testing them.
I honestly don't understand how Samsung, the biggest mobile phone producer in the world, allows carriers to call the shots. As you've mentioned, Apple doesn't allow the carriers to have any input in OS updates. Samsung has just as much clout - what's stopping them from doing the same?

In all honesty, I can't say I disagree. Apple pretty much gave the carriers the finger by strictly controlling what's included in the updates and their release timeline. My biggest frustration with Android is the complete lack of uniformity when it comes to keeping it up to date. With that being said, I would sooner switch to Windows than iOS.
With regards to custom ROMs....not really my thing anymore. There is always something that doesn't function properly, which is why I'd rather have the official release. I used to be a flashaholic when I had the Vibrant and the MT4G, even the Sensation (to some extent). Nowadays, I tend to favor the official releases, even if it's a leak.

Wut? Samsung has slimmer margins than Apple does. By a LONG shot.
Also, Apple doesn't let carriers control updates, but the carriers do significantly control what is going in to each update (primarily in terms of what features are enabled for use when). They still don't have a gold paved road.
That being said, I do wish Samsung would force the carriers to a better update schedule. I wouldn't care if it was consistently a month after the international version. That would be better than what we have now.

I spoke to an ATT rep on chat and they said that they were the ones holding up the release. Doesn't seem like they care what with the disabling of google wallet as well.

I kinda agree as I did the same with my S1 i9000 : flashed ROMs and kernels onto it on a weekly basis for nearly 1½ year.
Now that I have my S3, I just don't feel like that anymore as I :
- Appreciate the quality and stability of Samsung's releases
- Enjoy using the best camera app there is
- Know that the phone will eventually be updated to an even better release
However, the day I'll be told by Samsung that my S3 will no longer be elligible to upgrades, just watch me go back to my custom ROMs flashing habits! héhéhé
As for the bloatware ... root and any decent file explorer can help you get rid of it!

I thought most people knew by now that only Official Google devices get (somewhat) prompt updates. I didn't buy my SIII based on what it was going to get, I bought it based on what it already had. IMO as long as they update the phone in a relatively timely manner (within 6 months I'd say) then I am content - even then I wouldn't be too upset. I would just flash something myself.

I do the same. Take official firmware and basically make my own custom rom.
That way I have control about what is and isnt done.

remove bloatware myself with root explorer (after copying everything I am about to remove to my external sd for safe keeping)
keep copies of the build.prop, framework-res systemui etc.
I modify the systemui for my own icons etc.
Install other modes etc.
As for leaks the only leak I know off on AT&T based is LH1 which I am running.
I am not running the latest lh9 as lh1 has everything that lh9 has but doesnt have nfc screwed up so wallet still works with it.
I am running the lh9 modem.

By the time the S3 will become ineligible for updates, I will have moved on to my next phone. Back in 2011, Google set up an Android update alliance, where many manufacturers and U.S.-based carriers promised that new Android phones would receive timely OS updates for 18 months after launch. The only timely thing about this promise was the death of this alliance. After Jellybean, I give the S3 one more update before Samsung declares it non-upgradeable. It's unfortunate, but that's just the nature of the beast.
I'm well aware that only official Google devices (Nexus) get timely updates. This is the only reason why I held on to my Galaxy Nexus after buying the S3. I was well aware that it'll be a loooooooooong time before the S3 sees an update, so I kept the Nexus to satisfy my cravings for latest Android versions.

Funny how I left Sprint and my S3 to come to AT&T and get an S3. Surely we won't be too much further behind if Sprint is releasing it? Maybe? Bueller?

Good find! When the initial Samsung statement regarding the U.S. S3 variants being updated to Jellybean "in the coming months" was issued, it specifically mentioned "all carriers except for Sprint". Although the arrival of the Sprint update may signal that ours are just around the corner, I'm not holding my breath.

I just want to point out that Apple doesn't play by the same ruleset as Android OEM's do when it comes to releasing updates. Part of the original contract with AT&T was to prevent AT&T from having any say in Apple's updates and it kind of just kept going with the other carriers since they wanted the phone to sell so dearly.
Android OEM's have no such stipulation, Nexus devices not counting of course.

Saw on another site that AT&T wont see an update till January.
Of course that is just word of mouth, so take it for what you will.

I like all of you was happy to hear the news. However, with kitkat comes a new way (sounds not good for people who like to move items to removable sd cards) for us to manage our files. Im still a little confused on exactly what this means, but I guess time will tell.

The only problem with that article was this statement....

You know AT&T will be the last and Verizon will be first, hopefully AT&T will decide to release the update to the S3.

For god sake, please remove the 4.3 Knox bootloader in the KitKat update.

No more official updates for S3, Android 4.3 was the last update.

That's from Samsung Poland regarding the international i9300 version.
Pretty sure the international i9300 will get the 4.4.2 update elsewhere in Europe.
And unless Samsung USA backtracks on its commitment to bring Android 4.4.2 to the North American SGS3, I'm confident we'll see it.

The problem that I have is that the official announcement says "select carriers" leaving me to believe that there is a possibility it could never happen with AT&T. Of course since AT&T is so large I think it will go through to avoid a massive swarm of complaints. It really comes down to how quickly they will push the release.

Pretty sure Sprint releases the first update, followed by T-Mobile...then AT&T and finally Verizon. It's been that way for all devices. Ex.: the 4.3 update.

Look, if we ever get this update, can at least some of you hold off for a little bit and see what the update does to some of the other phones first (does it lock the bootloader, does it make battery life worse, what apps might have issues, is there a way to go back in case something goes wrong) and not make the same mistake that so many of us make with these phones by rushing to these toys, oops, updates impatiently the very first day that they come out. I call these updates toys because with the exception of the phones that have major issues, all these updates are around here is just something new to play with.

Forget it. I see that I won't get through to everybody because we are all different. Carry on everyone.

Lol, I won't be taking it. I'm on S3Rx 3.0. I'll wait til enewman17 and loserskater do their magic. I'm in no rush to have "the next big thing". Got it on my n7 LTE and I'm not too impressed.
