[Q] Did I just brick my phone? Any way out of this?? Need your help XDA! - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Hello XDA! I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II and rooted it yesterday. Root brought it back to Gingerbread and I went to install ICS on it today following these directions.
http://www.theandroidsoul.com/ics-a...amsung-galaxy-s2-international-version-i9100/
Here's where I become stupid. These directions are for the international version and I have the Sprint version (with the four capacitive buttons on the bottom.) Now, no matter how I boot, I get "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies and try again."
A normal boot up reaches that screen (just power button), vol up + power reaches that screen, vol down + power reaches that screen. I don't see the "Galaxy S II" splash screen before that.
Help me XDA! You're my only hope!

This "Galaxy S2 i9100" is NOT the Epic 4G Touch (Sprint Galaxy SII).
Are you sure you're in the right forum?
If you do have the E4GT and used this method you're done. End of story. There are some possible ways of getting this thing back but it'd be a waste of time for you in my opinion.
Take it back to Sprint and tell them you can't read, didn't understand, can't follow directions or whatever and try and get a replacement. Tell them you received and update and the phone died or something.
And if you are on the E4GT and get a new one then please take some time to read the stickies and how tos here. ALL of them ALL the way through.
Good luck.

I am on the right forum this time. Going back to Sprint tomorrow. Crying myself to sleep tonight.
I'm going to walk in the store with a written note that reads "I'm dumb. I can't read. Phone broke." Hopefully I walk into a Sprint store and not a Verizon store.

Well, seriously, good luck.
If/when you get your new phone come back and spend some time here and you'll see how fantastic your device can be as long as it's not a paperweight.

Thanks. I shouldn't have a problem getting another. I'll fall back on a Galaxy Nexus I used my upgrade on but plan on returning it for the Nexus 4 next month (hopefully). The E4GT is a beautiful phone!! I'm really blown away by it! I'll be back in a few days to find solid working rooting instructions and CM10. I'll do my research. Thanks leader.

Well like you said his attitude is awesome! Smart and humble.
He'll probably be one of those who learns to really get enjoyment out of this device. And hopefully contribute in some way.

Good luck, buddy! If they show you mercy and give you a new E4GT, c'mon over here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28513684 for any help you may need! Just make sure it is BEFORE you hard brick your phone. Again, good luck!

I couldnt agree more with you! Ive been flashing roms on HTC since winmo days all on HTC devices, all this terminology is confusing! LOL. I got the Photon too and its the same thing, REAL different from flashing HTC. I just havent "studied" enough with the Photon though (even though I am unlocked and rooted) because I knew it would just be my backup phone once the E4GT came out.

I found this thread in the international SGSII forum.
Definitely helpful for those of us new to Samsung.
It's not so bad. Odin is just a tool to help flash a full image to your phone including modem and kernel. We still flash roms through clockwork mod most of the time. Tech associates at sprint stores use odin to remove your custom roms and root. We use it to flash completely back to stock. In order to use Odin (and for it to recognize the phone) you must be in download mode (was hold 1 and power on, on the og epic). Bootloader should be the same as on HTC, it is where you can flash custom roms (provided its not the stock bootloader shown here). Stock bootloader is where system updates are flashed once the update.zip is downloaded and detected on the sd card. Was real scary for me too...when coming from WM!!!
edit: hope the explanation wasn't too elementary, I'm no dev.

well sorry I was just asking cause the screen talking about custom rom got me confused, but I have owned very very many phones so far and have rooted every single one of them
Evo 4g, Evo 3d, Photon, nexus S, Atrix, HTC Inspire, HTC Hero are just some of them
It's very obvious to me that the bootloader is unlocked out of the box.
You get to *odin mode* by holding down volumne + and - keys at the same time along with the power key, release power key when device turns on while continuing to hold + and - keys untill the droid guy screen comes on, then release.
I'll betcha that the existing galaxyS 1 root files work

[CONFIRMED] Rooting causes LoS

I saw earlier that people were saying that rooting the epic touch 4g may NOT be the cause of LoS. But I'm here to tell you that I only got the LoS after I rooted. All I did was root and install honeycomb battery + crt animation. The LoS was getting ridiculous, so I went back to the stock kernel and I'm LoS free. Just letting you guys know, this IS a root issue and it should be stated clearly for those who are considering rooting. I think it will just cuase a lot of grief for users if they are not properly warned, so please do so guys.
its not confirmed unless you have thousands of independent tests
Just a warning, you're about to get flamed for posting this in the development section. With that said, I too never received an LoS until the day after rooting the phone (had it for two weeks with no issues). Installing the LoS kernel has helped a ton, though.
i can also confirm that rooting caused my phone to experience an endless onslaught of LoS occurances. I had the phone for a month without any LoS issues, only ****ty battery life (losing 6-8%/hr idling over night). The day I rooted the phone, i experienced LoS three times. Installing the lostkernel helped and I only got one in three days, but I ended up switching to the EVO 3D since I coudl not stand the battery life.
I have never once had LoS, on either stock put root. I am one of the lucky ones. However in have read there are people out there that have LoS without routing, so I am not sure your confirmation is 100%.

Unless you can explain why my COMPLETELY STOCK phone got struck with the LOS bug, then no, rooting is not the cause. It may TRIGGER the LOS bug, but it is NOT THE CAUSE.
Please try to do a data profile clear/update, that's what fixed my phone.
sorry before hand but whats los? loss of service??????
I experienced LoS before and after root. Now I know what it means when I read "your milage may vary ".
Now to another issue, just because your phone is showing reception or 1 bar doesn't mean you haven't LoS... lol, only way to find out is by placing a call...
Samsung is very good with destroying its reputation... Before it was their lazy late updates, now defective devices... I was 100% set to get Galaxy Nexus, then I heard Samsung... Hmmm makes me think three times and looking to alternatives, definitely will wait atleast few weeks before getting Nexus.
I would compare samsung to a sexy sl*t lol

Just total overall fail
One case does not mean confirmation, plenty of people on stock are getting this problem.

Oh my goodness - closing this thread - it's already out of hand.
OP - follow the rules. Post in the right spot.

Not even two weeks in & getting another Nexus.

So long story short at the beginning of this month i called Verizon because i was having major issues with my Nexus and was able to get them to cough up a brand new one instead of refurbished device and was super excited, got the new phone and began having issues right out of the box. At first i thought it had to do with unlocking and rooting but found out soon enough it was something wrong with the device, i lost count on how many times ive gone back to stock and how many factory resets ive done.
Camera app would crash when i was focusing, zooming, turning flash on off & same with video record. I could only record for about 10 seconds (if that) before getting either a black screen or a beautiful force close screen and to top it off sometimes i would have to battery pull in order to even get the camera back up and running for another 10 seconds.
YouTube i couldnt watch more then 40 to 60 seconds of any video before it would completely just freeze except for the audio. I would force close this app and the audio would just keep going and this was no matter if i was on a call or not i could here the audio in the back round.
Other apps on the phone where behaving the same and today i finally was fed up so i made a trip down to the store and got the whole store involved with attempting to figure out what the hell was going on with it, manager said this is the first device since release that he or his employees have seen with this type of issue. What was even more shocking to him was that it was a brand new device and then he hit me with he couldnt give me another new one but a refurbished one that he could order so i decided to leave the store and come home to spend the last 45min on the phone with a VZW tech and finally i got him and his supervisor to budge, another new device should be here tomorrow and hopefully i wont have any issues with but only time will tell. My point of this post is to not only rant of course and get some feedback from members to see if anyone else out there is having or has had any issues like this??
I also thought about waiting for the supposedly 4.0.4 update to drop tomorrow but honestly at this point with how many factory resets ive done and have been running stock no unlock or root for two days i think its honestly something wrong with this damn phone i got rather then something wrong with permissions or anything like that. Anyhow so much for a short story let me know what you guys think.
Thanks.
Well...that just sounds like terrible, horrible luck...
Should have gotten an iPhone perhaps
the one u have should still be under warranty...send it back

You are lucky that you got a new one. I am receiving my fourth refurbished "like new" Galaxy Nexus from Verizon this week. Every single one I get mutes the audio on the other caller's end, and one of these phones also would drop data when it went to sleep.
I get the feeling that people are turning in their Nexus phones because of the dropping audio problem, and then Verizon is sending them right back out because they can't find the problem in their testing. How in the world could I get 4 straight broken Galaxy Nexuses?
I really don't want to have to switch to a Razr...
Should have gotten the refurbed one, atleast that way a human was working on it, to see if it functions right.

[Q] need some help going back to stock

OK so i know this info is scattered around, but frankly i am a little confused at this point. i'll start with my situation.
i'm running slick ricks AOKP JB rom. i was on build three for very long, skipping several updates until milestone 1.2. i did a dirty flash (right over build three) and it seemed to work, until i started to have battery issues. my phone would die if i used it for more than a minute anywhere under 60%, and was unable to power back on. upon plugging it in, the battery started charging right back up from 60% or whatever percentage it died at. i blame my dirty flash. i upgraded to 1.3 and it's even worse, it dies anywhere under 90% now.
so, i was thinking i need to just bite the bullet and start from el26 with cwm. but i started to get confused at about this point. if i'm using a jellybean rom, do i need to use "JB Touch-Wiz Based Kernels" or is it okay to flash from el26?
second, it has been very very long since i had to go back to stock and i was just gonna try and start from el26 and see how it went, without bothering yall. i clicked on the link in the sticky thread w/ all the kernels and get redirected to a new repository. can someone confirm that this section is what i want to be using? and the oneclick exes are probably most dummy proof, yes?
thanks in advance guys. i was never very pro at this, and now i'm just in need of some clarification.
edit:
knew i was missing something... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1903252 flashing now and i'll report back.

Go in and show them it spins. Any store supporting TEP should replace it for free. If you have time call ahead and make sure you get that same answer as well as a name to hold accountable. Should avoid most hassles that way.

S pen put in backwards....

So this has been posted only once somewhere else, but unfortunately not on XDA. I accidentally put my s pen in my phone backwards and it was stuck. Of course, I frantically pulled it out, but the end is now stuck inside the phone and will not come out.
Anyone have any advice? Would I be able to take it back under a 14 day return or warranty it? This really sucks right now.
So I advise you all not to do what I did.
Okay, so what I suggest is putting super glue on the tip of your s pen and putting it in there. Maybe gorilla glue and use it to fish it out?

I was specifically warned not to do this by my best buy sales person. I thought, well, let me see if there's resistance before it gets stuck...Nope! Like an idiot, I broke it off in there. The good news is that Samsung will repair it for a cost. I'll let you know how much. Call it an "idiot tax"

I put my pen in backwards and had it stuck although I didn't break the end by forcing it out. I tried to exchange it at Best Buy, but was turned down. I sent them the phone 8/26 and it is scheduled to arrive in my hands 9/10 which means I will be apart from my phone for 16 days. I was not charged for the repair nor the shipping to and from the repair center.

Thanks for the link. I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards but just in case I let someone use my device and they do, this is great info.
Yes, I thought I would never be stupid enough to put it in backwards either. But rushing to clear out from one meeting on the way to another one, talking to some folks at the same time, in backwards it went.
My only gripe with Samsung is there is absolutely NO difference in resistance inserting it backwards or forwards, although I'm not sure it would be possible to do that and keep the flush fitting s-pen.
I used the drinking straw method to remove my s-pen, and the internals of the phone are fine. Thank you Internet for saving my device!

I've seen many videos confirming the paper method works to fix this issue. Your post is the first I've heard that the straw method also works. It is the ease in which this mistake can be made that is the design flaw.
4 hour old note 5... at a bar with co-worker. he dares me to put it in backwards. i foolishly did. got stuck. was able to remove it after some force and playing around. works, but phone has no detection of in/out as expected. called ATT and their sending me a replacement. had the rep state on the record the pen was "stuck inside device, and now that it has been removed has broken phone-to-pen sync"
blah :-\

Lol, my story is similar to yours. I first read about the issue and didn't believe it could be that easy to render the spen useless. It was that easy. Customer support came through for me. Not a big issue anymore since there is a known easy way to fix.

Crazy right? I didn't even go THAT far into the device. Our eyes wide in shock and amazement as we tried to process what had just happened. It was just as I was wrapping up the showing off features and screen bit too. Damn, maybe next time lmao. Att got my back though, lucky !
