I'm talking about to been able to use your phone overseas with a GSM carrier. Not only in UK ..
The GSM SIM is embedded and not user accessible. If you want to travel and use the phone you are stuck getting screwed by Sprints roaming rates. The iphone 5 and Photon Q are the same way. It's bullsh*t to call them world phones at this point. You could take the phone apart and access the SIM, but then you'd still have to get it unlocked.
I think part of the reason is so many were buying world phones on contract, billing it to the account and selling them overseas and not paying a dime on the account. With all the fraud, I think they took the most drastic route possible. Still BS to screw its traveling customers. People will still find a way if they want to commit fraud. They always do. And we pay for it one way or the other.

Is this only missing in the Sprint Version? Verizon? I imagine the US GSM variants don't have this issue. Anyone know for sure?
It's purely a Sprint thing. Verizon, by law, can't lock their LTE phones, not even locally. Hence the iphone 5 on Verizon can be used on Tmo and AT&T as well as overseas with other SIMs.

I got mine from Hong Kong which came with the SIM slot. can not image those locked to a carrier with an embedded SIM... Would those be much cheaper than the generic ones?

You're locked into one or the other when in the US, but if you travel overseas, you were generally free to pop in a local SIM for cheap service. I think the Verizon version will allow it as well as being unlocked for local service due to the FCC. This is a first for international CDMA phones. Sprint, using different bandwidth for their LTE doesn't have that restriction so to speak. And embedding the GSM SIM is new for them. It hasn't been their MO up until the new LTE phones hit.

Yes unfortunately this seems to be a Sprint trend on all new international phones. A move which I am not pleased with. What I wasn't sure of is if Verizon was following suit. Can anyone confirm embedded Simms in any of Verizons new international phones? I'd like to see Sprint reverse this policy but it probably won't happen until a lawsuit our FCC ruling against them.

Is the UK version same as the unlocked phone I would buy here in the states eventually? I have tmobile and as far as I know all unlocked nexus phone are same? Is that true? This is false. It will work on T-mobile 3G, AT&T 3G, and most other GSM networks in the world.

They are the same. The phone is pentaband HSPA+. It'll get HSPA+ anywhere its available pretty much.
So to be clarify, the UK phone is basically same as unlocked nexus here and everything will work like 3g and 4g/hpsa+ here as well. What about updates. When Google pushes ota updates, will I get those same time as everyone else in states.

The UK Galaxy Nexus is the unlocked Galaxy Nexus. There is no "UK" version. Its just being sold in the UK.
Everything will work juuuust fine. Just put your SIM in it.

I remember buying my Nexus One (which I'm still using) and I had to be careful to buy the correct variant so that I could use it back in Europe... only the T-Mobile variant would work.
My colleagues who have relocated to California have a few Android devices, including a couple of Nexus S, but since they purchased them in Europe they can't get 3G since the European Nexus S doesn't have AT&T's 3G frequencies, it would only work on T-mobile US.

The Nexus One and Nexus S were quadband, meaning that they only worked on the specific carrier frequencies they were designed for. For that reason there were specific T-mobile US versions because T-mo uses 1700/2100 (AWS) for 3G rather than the 1900 standard many other carriers in the world use.
The Galaxy Nexus is pentaband HSPA+, meaning that there is one model that will work everywhere in the world. Yes even on 3G (or "4G" if the carrier calls HSPA+ that). You'll be able to buy the unlocked Galaxy Nexus in the UK and use it in the US on any of the GSM carriers here (AT&T, T-mo, Simple, regionals).

no sim just means that its not provided with a contract or a sim card for a carrier, instead its just the phone unlocked full price that you use with any carrier.
as for what you need just check the bands that the carrier use vs what the phone has the galaxy nexus is pentaband tho so it will most likely work with pretty much all carriers globally

I've been reading the last few comments and decided to speak up. First I want to say thank you, even though I didn't ask the questions myself, but the questions asked I had myself.
Now, I am a Sprint customer. Clearly no sign of this coming to us anytime soon if at all. I have a Nexus S 4G and I am aware it'll get the update soon enough, but I am wanting the Galaxy Nexus so bad that I am considering ordering the one released in the UK. Now I noticed the "sim free" or "no sim" means it is contract free. I assume I have to at least have some type of service with Magenta to even use it if I order it right? Also, let's say I already was a T-Mobile customer and I had a UK released Galaxy Nexus ported here in the US which comes SIM free, all I would have to do is put my SIM from my previous android phone (whatever that would be) inside the Galaxy Nexus and it would get service right? The phone itself would still be off contract right? The SIM is just for service so I can actually use it as a phone. And it all comes down to the consumers data plans, etc on how they can use it right?
I hope I wasn't confusing.

If you want a SIM-free handset (which by the looks of it, the OP does) then you will have to wait until next week at the earliest since the SIM-free stock has been delayed.

So... Both are carrier phones.

I don't think sprint will activate non branded phones anymore.
Not to say its impossible, its not. It would work with 3g only though and the steps to get it on the network would likely be illegal (ESN cloning a current sprint device for starters) in addition to changing all of the APN settings etc.
Not going to happen, especially with sprint releasing the same device soonish, unless you do it yourself.

Huh? he clearly wasn't assuming the OP was outside of the United States, considering he was responding to a question about VERIZON and SPRINT. Yes the only way to go "carrier-less" is an import. Everyone has the option to import and run in AT&T, T-Mo, Simple, or other GSM regionals if they want. The argument shouldn't be "carrier phone" vs. "not carrier phone", but rather CDMA vs GSM, considering most ppl on XDA, even if they buy a "carrier phone", wouldn't mind unlocking it and moving it around. That's possible on GSM, not so much on CDMA (except certain cases like Sprint MVNO's).
Anyway... OP this was discussed in a very (VERY) lengthly thread about a month ago when the Verizon GN came out. Short answer? No, it won't work.

How is importing it any different then running to the store and picking one up? Same phone, same warranty, same price. Yeah if something happens I have to send it to Clove, Handtec, Negri back to the UK...big deal.

We don't know what LTE band its radio chip supports (other than the Verizon band), yet. But don't buy a Verizon Nexus just hoping that you can use it on Sprint in the future. Sprint LTE network won't launch until later this year, and by then you will have many more choices of ICS phones, and/or the price of Nexus may have lowered considerably.

Not surprising given the GSM version's international availability. Maybe the Verizon users are simply more vocal...All I meant was that in the couple weeks since the Verizon version dropped the general section in particular has exploded, where it was far more quiet before. GalNex is available around the world on many carriers, yet every other thread mentions CDMA/LTE (exclusive to Verizon). Very out of proportion. Just an observation.

LTE where available meaning in an LTE area they will sell you an LTE device. The UK version does NOT have LTE.

The tmobile version is GSM whereas sprint/Verizon are CDMA. These are 2 totally different technologies. As far as I am concerned, there is no way to run a gsm device on the cdma network or viceversa. They use different frequencies, etc.
However, I may be wrong so let's wait to see if some with a better knowledge supports my claim.

My cousin(in his youthful stupidity) is with Verizon, he has a Motorola Droid(more stupidity) and for some strange reason it has a sim slot, and it is populated with a Verizon sim. I'm not sure why, maybe they do that so they can use phones that aren't normally CDMA? But then they'd need towers and spectrum for GSM. Who knows.
I actually sold an ATT S3, unlocked to someone on ebay and they tried to use it on vzw prepaid. Of course my ad said clearly it was ATT, and unlocked. I didn't think about needing to state it would NOT work on vzw. Your situation is a bit different however.

I don't know about sprint but verizon note 2 does have sim card slot for the sim. It came unlocked. It does support gsm. i tried it on my tmobile and it worked.

Verizon/Sprint phones are CDMA but the new 4g LTE phones from them are using a sim card slot for the 4g LTE network ... (correct me if im wrong obviously)

Get an unlocked gt n7100. Gsm model. And you can do much better than $850 easily. Without trying you should be able to get one for less than $600 after tax. You probably won't get lte in Philippines though

I called Verizon twice about this very thing since I'm about to go overseas. Both times they assured me that the SIM card was unlocked. Going to take my old phone just in case....

I don't think the Sim card is unlocked... Its the phone itself. You'd need to get a Sim over where you are going.

Apologies. I meant that the SIM card slot was carrier unlocked, not the SIM card itself. Naturally you would have to purchase a SIM at the destination.

Verizon 4G LTE devices are unlocked out of the box
One thing to note here in terms of software phone locks is that all Verizon 4G LTE smartphones come unlocked out of the box. The reason why is that the spectrum Verizon is using to build its 4G LTE network had restrictions put on it by the Federal Communications Commission, which required the company to allow "open access" to the network. So as part of this provision, Verizon has decided not to lock those devices. That said, its 3G devices are locked.

There aren't special codes that need to be entered in order to use it on another carrier's network. But because of the spectrum differences I mentioned above, a Verizon iPhone 5 won't operate on AT&T's LTE network. It will operate on AT&T's 3G network, which is based on GSM. So this means you can use the Verizon iPhone on AT&T, but you won't get the fastest Internet speeds on it.
The same is true if you take the Verizon iPhone 5 to Europe. You can swap out the SIM card and put in another carrier's SIM card, but the device will operate only on a GSM-based 3G network. And it won't operate on a faster LTE network.
And even though the phone is unlocked and uses the same CDMA technology and some of the same radio frequency channels as Sprint, an unlocked iPhone 5 won't operate on Sprint.
