Very Sensitive S Pen

Good day. I'd like to consult some issues I have with my S Pen sensitivity. It's too sensitive that it triggers a tap or swipe even if the pen is away from the screen (maybe 5-8mm away). Anyone have any idea how to fix this? Firmware is XXLIH. Thanks!
Edit: Also tried turning off Air View and still had same issues.

the s-pen works with a button integrated into the tip, so it can't cause touches without actually touching something.
it most likely means your tip is broken/stuck so it constantly thinks you're touching the screen.
you can try moving the tip around a bit to see if loosens it enough to respond the way it should, but if that doesn't work you'll have to contact samsung or the store you bought your note 2 at to get either the stylus or the entire phone replaced.
replacing the stylus should be enough, but stores usually don't replace single accessories when they are included with a device.

I did that and actually worked! Pen is now stable onscreen. Will observe if this issue still persists tomorrow. Thanks for the tip (no pun intended )

Hey guys. Rather then start a new thread. I did a quick search and found this one.
I have the same issue as the OP. My pen seems too sensitive. When I scroll across apps or through the gallery, whilst hovering the pen a few millimetres above the screen, it clicks on stuff. This shouldn't happen right? It seems it does it more so in the top right corner. If any of you have the samsung weather widget on the homescreen there, all I have to do is hover the pen above the refresh button and it sometimes will just continually click on the refresh button. Its annoying. I'm just hoping its the s pen and not the note itself!
P.s I love this phone! !!

Funny as I also had this weird behavior, and just rotating a little bit the tip loosened it up, and now all is well.
Tried to reproduce the issue with normal usage, and I wasn't able to trigger it again... will observe for a day and see what to do, as this N2 is just sweeeeet working !

No doubt i have heard several time about the problem of S Pen over sensitivity but in most cases the reason has been seen with the sensor. So, I think better is that you replace it with Samsung because i don't think there would be any other solution. The problem is related with Sensor and you should replace it as soon as possible.

Thanks guys. As you say, might be difficult to exchange it now as its only the stylus. As the phone is working flawlessly!
I'll use it for a few more days and see. Hopefully it'll loosen on it's own behalf!

For those with issues, are you using screen protectors? I read one review where a guy mentioned a screen protector was actually interfering with the pen usage. And once he took it off it was ok. It was a matte one in specific.

I have this exact issue.
I read somewhere if you hit the back of the pen several times against a hard surface it seems to temporarily fix the issue. Something to do with demagnetizing the magnet inside the pen. Not sure if this is a load of crap, but it seems to be a temporary fix for me.
I contacted Samsung about it and they told me just to reset and reflash the firmware *sigh*. Not sure I want to do that just yet, but I will if no other solution is found soon.

I am not sure if this is right topic to write but my problem is also about s-pen. As you can see in the picture that area what is "over the s-pen holder" does not recognice the pen if immediatly. Like if I am browsing the web and scroll from that area there is always little delay. And when making note it works perfectly if I move pen to this area but not if I land the pen in this area, then happens what you can see in the picture. Does anyone else have this kind of problem?
I hope someone understood what I am trying to say.

S pen sensitivity...

Hey guys I just got my note 2 today and have been messing around with the S pen. Does anyone else notice that when pressing buttons on the screen to open apps or things in apps etc that it is not always responsive unless you hit it at the perfect angle? Also when I write normally i kind of write more at a sideways angle towards the screen but it seems to not register very well like this so I have to write more vertical towards the screen. Is there any way to fix these issues or is that just how it is at this time? Also i feel like if I write too lightly it doesn't register very well when writing. Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity or am I the only one who thinks this? Lastly, if i touch the screen with my palm it makes a mark in s note i thought it was not supposed to do this or let your finger write when the s pen is out. How do I set this?

I have a similar issue where i seem to have to press hard to get a reaction, especially the app drawer icon.

I notice you have to hit dead on which makes sense. This isn't a pencil or pen where you can write slanted and the ink still touch the paper or what not. But rather the "ball" of the s pen is where your main contact should be. Takes getting used to but what doesn't? Pen works great once you learn how it works

I had to exchange my S-pen 3 times due to sensitivity issue! One of them was way too sensitivity, I wasn't even touching the screen and I could write on S-note... Store manager thought that was part of the Note 2's new feature... lol
Even after the exchange of S-pen I was still having little issues with it, and I ran across a thread about slamming the S-pen on the ground. I know it sounds bizarre but it actually worked! I didn't believe it at first but now my s-pen works flawless... so weird. :silly:

lol like throwing it or just slamming it? and yeah i figured it would just take getting used to I just wanted to make sure it wasn't just my pen. So is there really no settings to change for it though??
Also funny question... does it matter which way it is held? Like when I was first holding it you would press the button with your thumb however you could also hold it so you would press it with your index finger. Does it matter? Is it made to work better one way?

Take a closer look at the tip of the S-pen. It's actually slightly spring loaded! I discovered this from an early review video I watched before I purchased mine. I believe that the tip has to be pressed hard enough to slightly retract in order to produce a mark. Writing with the pen at an angle may not be doing that.

But I just tried it and the pen is working 95% better. I don't know if it will stay this way but it's working pretty well (for now at least).

Hey I have the same problem with you but I have solved it in a stupid but effective way. I open the back case and press it, that's it the pen sensitivity back to normal.... lol try it easy and effective....

The S pen can be too sensitive, so you have to adjust its potentiometer. Yes, you heard that right.Just pop the button cover off by simply using a razor blade or something really thin, the cover should pop immediately. Then, you have to use a small flat head screwdriver and turn the screw clockwise. This will adjust the S Pen sensitivity. If you want to make it more sensible, then you have to screw counterclockwise. You should adjust it until it no longer has a problem. This fix has worked for a lot of people, so it should work as a general fix. If you still have problems with the S pen, then you should get in touch with the dealer that gave the phone to you and get the S pen switched because it is faulty.

Wish I had known this a last week before I broke my last S Pen. lol Worked great and I even adjusted my full size S Pen as well! Kudos!

Hover feature my a$$

Okay, to make a long story short, for the first time ever I'm getting a full phone replacement within a week of having a phone.
Now for the story, get note 2, jump for joy, use s pen, good to go, use s pen again, random lines, dots, accidental screen presses, go to sprint store(affiliate market), "that's simple the hover feature, don't you know how to use your phone" call Samsung "that's simple the hover feature, don't you know how to use your phone" call sprint (corporate) yea that does sound like a faulty unit, we'll get you swapped out right away" now all I wanted was an s pen swap, but I'll live with a fresh phone, but I ask the community now, am I really in the right here for questioning a brand new phone? Or is it truly just the hover feature and I'm just not use to it?
P.S. I do have a screen protector, but I have taken it off to see if the problem still repeated which it did, thus making me reapply the screen protector

If you are a getting a replacement, why did you post this? If your phone was defective, what is the question?

I ordered my phone directly through Sprint and received either a faulty pen or a faulty phone. Went to Sprint and the customer service representative saw that my pen was registering lines in only certain areas and hitting the keyboard while hovering over in air mode. She knew something was up and went to the "technician" to see what he thought. He didn't even look at the phone and just replied, "it's supposed to do that" repeatedly. She even tried to have him look at how inconsistent this "feature" was as it only made marks or registered hits in certain parts of the phone. It made me rather angry that he didn't even bother to acknowledge the customer rep's concern or mine for that matter. I ended up having Sprint replace the whole phone too which was a pretty smooth process.
I think Samsung has some faulty pens and don't want to acknowledge that fact. Perhaps they know some people either don't use the Spen enough to care or won't simply complain about it. The phone is wonderful and the S-pen, when working correctly, is freaking awesome. Best phone I've ever had and I am not trying to bash sprint or samsung but I think it's in there best interest to acknowledge this issue rather than simply saying it is how the phone is supposed to work.

This was resolved in the international forums. I was having similar issues and five minutes later the pen was as it should have been. The trick to removing the button cover is to lift from the end opposite the tip. A small clockwise turn and I was all set.

The screen isn't pressure sensitive either...it's all the s pen.I tried the hovered cardboard trick as well....and the pressure was all the pen. Disappointed Samsung.everyone reviews the phone as having a "pressure input screen", it should read sensor pics up pen data as how hard is being pressed.

I have this issue from time to time but its really not a big deal to me, I'll decrease the sensitivity in the pen later on and fix the issue. To lazy to set everything up again even though I have tb

Im guessing youve never used a Wacom tablet before. Thats just how active digitizers work, pressure sensitive pens. No reason to be disappointed.

How did things get this far without mentioning duct tape, WD40, and "30 grade oil and ball bearings"? It's all ball bearings these, everybody knows this.
For (S) pen n00bs like me, I like it so far. Luckily, (knock on wood) I seem to have a good one out of the box. I've used the notepad feature for my last trip to Home Depot. Sorta difficult at first to write on it. Kinda gotta "figure it out" for yourself, I think.
One feature I had to get used to was hovering the pen over buttons. Mine seemed "click-happy" anytime I hovered over a button. Again, practice.
So far, I am VERY pleased with the Note 2. (Rooted stock w/ TWRP recovery)

HELP PLEASE SPen stylus writes when not touching the screen !!

When I got my note 2 the stylus worked fine but now when its hovering over the screen it will write on the screen! The attached picture shows what I mean. Only the word "Hello" was written with the stylus touching the screen the other marks are with the pen hovering over the screen.
I have noticed that it works fine if the stylus is close to the screen and only writes on the screen when its about 1cm away from it. This also has the effect that if you are trying to switch things off/on in the settings menus as you move the pen closer it will switch it over at 1cm and then switch it over again when you touch the screen. Does anybody know how to fix this short of doing a factory reset? (which i haven't tried yet).

Hi I'm just gonna relate to my experience with the note 1. I had the same issue with the s-pen and so did many at release just take it to your store and get one replaced. Its probably a defective pen.

Hmm, I bought mine from Amazon in Germany and im in the UK so not that easy. I know someone else with a note 2 so I'll try there pen on mine. Thanks for the info.

I had same problem too..
I read on other thread, the easiest way to solve it is by flicking the S-Pen several time (or maybe hit it to hard surface carefully)

This was my thread from way back.
There have also been others who are having the same issue, with their own threads.
Long story short, there is a miscalibration on the potentiometer of the pen. Some have said to give your pen a good slam on the desk, tip first.
Some say open the panel of the button and adjust something inside.
I took the easy route and went back to the Samsung store, and got a replacement pen.
No troubles so far.

Ive just tried another pen from a friend and that works fine. I'll set if I can get Amazon Germany to send me a replacement pen.

Same issue with AT&T Note II -- one imagines they should test these things (or include spares or something)... Very frustrating.

Same here, but I thought it was normal behaviour. I got the phone from Vodafone UK.
Shall I ask for a replacement?

Samsung have sent me one no problem. You can either phone them or go through their contact us page. If you phone they want a receipt emailed but if you do it the other way they just want where you bought it from. Mines confirmed as sent with 5 to 10 days delivery

Fix S-Pen on Samsung Galaxy Note II/2 - writes when not touching screen
Tapping the pen will work, but it take a few attempts. Hold it by the back end and flick the tip end down onto the hard surface so as to not damage the plastic writing tip.
Also, note that the problem can be caused by a on-off sticking pen button. The pen button clips over a post and rocks on-and-off of a momentary switch which makes a click when depressed. Carefully pop out by getting under the depressable end (toward the writing tip end of the pen) and it will pop up and out. Clean out the area below, and around the momentary switch, thoroughly, perhaps with canned air, perhaps also with a careful wiping-out. (There's a switch lubricant or some sort of white stuff that's sometimes still present from manufacturing process, and I think maybe causes the switch to stick, or something which MIGHT contribute to problem -- anywho, cleaning it out is a needed issue I've seen on two out of three of these Note II devices I bought.) After cleaning Replace the button by first sliding in the tab-end, then snapping down the other end over the plastic cross bar (carefully!).
Test the button and make sure it presses the switch and clicks, then springs right back up easily.

OK, try it out.
Repeat the tip-tapping process a few more times if it's still acting up.
This process worked on both pens. Was actually quicker than screwing around with getting T-Mobile or Samsung to fix it for me. Have fun.

All you need to do is hit the tip of the pen on a table. A bit hard.

Hey all, thanks for any input.
So to start out, I'm on a AT&T Note II. Using the phone without the S-Pen works fine, I can push here, push there, push everywhere without any "extra" pushes happening. The problem is when I pull out the S-Pen and start using it, if I'm hovering about the screen, not touching it, it acts like I'm clicking/pressing on things. It will also make it so that if I'm hovering and move the pen, the desktop changes to the next one as if I'm swiping. It's gotten so bad that I can't even use the S-Pen as it makes it unreliable. I'm running a 3.0.36 Perseus alpha27 kernel, rooted, at 4.1.2 Android version.
It seems like it's a bad S-Pen but I wasn't sure if that's possible.

Yes happend to me n I hit the table with my spen tip hitting table 3 or 4 times, seems like it would be bad for it but fixed the problem

Thats a easy "fix" +1

Mine did that, then I got a replacement s Pen and it worked perfectly.

If you hover over the screen and then press the tip of the pen you will notice it registers as a click. So while it might seem like the screen is registering the clicks it's actually the tip of the pen. Sometimes this gets stuck a little up or a little out of alignment or whatever. A few good wacks will restore it to the correct position most of the time.

Yep, simply bounce it off of the table a few times and it will be good to go. Been there, done that.

Smacking the pen and messing with the settings inside the pen are only temporary "fixes" I had this issue with my original S-Pen.. Went to the At&t warranty & claims store and they gave me a new pen.. YMMV .. New pen has been perfect. The tip on the new one seems a bit firmer than the OE one.. I'm guessing the flimsy spring is causing the problems
