S-Pen writing - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

On the commercial they were able to write anywhere and a box came up that let them do stuff. Mines only works in the drawing apps that were designed for it. Am I doing something wrong?

See the MIC icon ?
PRESS and HOLD that. Several icons will pop up. One of them is a "T" with a pen next to it. That is the Writing feature. Another icon is the keyboard, another is a clipboard, another is the MIC for voice activated typing
you write in the gray block on the bottom of the screen

I don't think he's talking about that.
I've also seen this video where someone writes directly on the screen. I don't remember what it exactly was but it was something like on gmaps you can write "Meet me there" make a circle around the place and an arrow pointing to it and then send it to your friend(s).
I'd be also interested how to do that.

ok, well...I've read that you can Share docs, pics, powerpoint, etc with others via the ALLSHARE Cast feature (In the Wireless and Networks section of settings). using the same WiFi turn on the AllShare. go to file you wish to share and it shows up on everyone's phone.
so the theory goes
anyway, everyone can "draw" on the shared image even though it's not permanent. It's like a highlighter or laser pointer used during a demonstration.

When you are in snote you can add a map to the note

I see. They made it look like you can do it directly in the particular app.
Well... It's like in that joke about Bill Gates and hell.

This is what he is talking about...hold the button on the s pen and touch and hold the screen. That takes a screen shot and you can seamlessly start writing on it. It's pretty cool.

i have a ?
i have a scrapbook i created in s note where i jot notes down n save pictures..i have a picture saved on one of the pages but i want to move it ..how do it move it to another part of the page ? i cant seem to be able to. the way i was able to do it is when i first save a pic i was able to put it into the scrap book and it had a bounding box which i could move or reshape the photo. but i started just saving them to re arrange them later and the s note app just placed them randomly on the pages and now i want to rearrange them

I was talking about the screen shot one. That is actually pretty cool. I love this device but it is by far the hardest device I've ever used in terms of figuring out how things work. Been really enjoying it though and I've already thanked all the users here who helped me.
One more question related to the spen. How do I get the gestures to work? Holding down the button cut and pastes things for me and that isn't what I wanted.

[Q] Google earth control

Ok, this may be a totally dumb question, but how the hell do I control/interact with Google Earth on my Nexus (4.0.2). I cannot seem to get it to tilt and pan etc using touch. I see no other icons or menus with control options? Am I missing something simple?
Uninstall and redownload.
Terminators run on Android
Ok. I'll try that. but this was the pre-installed Earth that came on my phone. Not sure I can uninstall. will try though. It's updated itself since I got the phone so should have the latest version, but will try. thanks
Ok I uninstalled the updates to the app, but I cannot uninstall this "system app". So I disabled it, forced stop. Enabled it again and will now download updates to make it 6.1 again.
I'm not sure what I should be seeing when using this app. There are no controls.
Just go to market and search for your application on the menus, then press your app Earth and there will be an option to update.. That's what i've done.
Cheers!
I have the very latest google earth from the market. 6.1 something.
Here is a screenshot. Does this look right? how do I tilt the screen to get the 3d angle? all I can do is drag around, and rotate. I cannot tilt so I can see topography?
ARGH. Im sure its just me not knowing how to use it.
Screen shot - where are the tilt controls?

I too would like to learn how to tilt the view in Google Earth.
But I am bemused by the responses so far. Why is it necessary to uninstall and reinstall? Are you suggesting that the factory installation (with updates) is somehow broken?
Use two fingers to rotate/tilt.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Hold two fingers to the screen and instead of pinching, just slide both up or down to change viewing angle or rotate them in a circular motion around a centred point in order to spin.

I thought so, because the OP said other icons and controls were also missing. I also did not realize it was a system app (it was a Market app on my Fascinate and treated by my ROM as a user app)

Thats great. Exactly the solution I needed. thank you.

Google maps works the exact same way. If you go to maps and drag 2 fingers down you will get that "3d" view. It's cool. They must be trying to get some continuity from app to app.

Although I'd agree it's not massively obvious in the app, there's always Menu > Help. Which has this to say:
To tilt your screen, touch the Look-Around icon and ensure it's enabled. To tilt up, touch the screen and move down. To tilt down, touch the screen and move up.

Spotted the problem? The "Look Around" button doesn't seem to exist any more, so the help is out of date! Wonderful.
I can confirm the "two finger draggy-spin" method works fine though
I know the solution. This was happening to me too but i figured out. This is how to do it. Enable auto rotation open Google earth and tilt your device then hold two fingers and swipe downward or upward. I hope i helped so thank me. Ok!!!!!!

i may try and whip something up today. should metamorph just fine i would think since people are using that for the softkeys.

I had a quick look in the contacts APK and I dont think so as it appears to be 2 seperate programs. I suppose with a little time examinig the relevant apk's and modifying the picture to the correct size it may be possible. probably have a go tomorrow when I have more time.
Well i gotta little surprise for you. I've worked a bit here and gotten some done. i'm also going to do the contacts. Here is a little teaser.
I have all of the incoming calls done, and most of the conference ones done. I'll get the people app ones done later and then upload them i'll make a download with a metamorph and you can just pick your images and drop them in the correct folder.
not going to release anything until i test it though, don't want to screw anyone's phone up.
As a little gift though, i'll toss up the stock android one. you have to rename it to picture_unknown.png and put it in yourself if you want to try it out. once they're all finished tonight, i'll be making my own post with them, but i'll link to it here.

[TIP/TRICK] How to get ICS blue in Text Notify Premium (& possibly other apps too)

[TIP/TRICK] How to get ICS blue in Text Notify Premium (& possibly other apps too)
I have been using Text Notify forever now on all my phones, so when I saw the Premium version is available (and for only 99c), I jumped at the chance to get custom colors for my "toast" style text notifications and support a deserving dev. Instead of listing all my favorite features of the app, I will leave you with a link.
I wrote the dev inquiring about how I can get the ICS blue. (those color slider things are not my strong point). He wrote me back almost immediately letting me know an easy little trick to accomplish this, and told me it was alright with him if I shared it here. He also added that the trick is not limited to his app, but can also work with other apps. I'm sure most of you themers already know these workarounds, but for others like me I hope this will be useful.
So on to the ICS blue color trick for Text Notify Premium..
1. Open Root Explorer and go to the highest folder level you can (should have acct, cache, config, d, and data folders ect.)
2. Navigate to data/data/com.riley.textnotifydonate/shared_prefs/
3. Long press com.riley.textnotifydonate_preferences.xml, choose Open With, then select Text Editor.
4. Change the value of the color you want to change (textcolor = text color,
textbackground = text background, emailcolor = email text color,
emailbackground = email notification background, if I remember everything correctly). Change the value to -13388315. That will be the ICS Blue.
5. Click the back button, choose Yes to save changes. You [must] delete the .bak file it creates.
6. Open TN and click on the setting you changed just to make sure everything changed correctly. It should be the value you want when you open it up.
Click to collapse
That was part of the conversation I had with the dev this morning before he added an outline color, rounded edges, & time to display the notification. You can change the outline color the same way. Here is a screenshot of how I have mine set up:

Hmmm.. The idea of the app, to me anyways..is that when your playing lets say, GTA3, you dont have to stop running from the cops to see a "you have reached 25% of your mobile data" text message. However, if you are beating up on a hooker and you get a "Honey I just went into labor" text message, you can think about pausing the game and going to the hospital. Adding a quick reply that would pause the game, or worse, open a quick reply when you touch the toast notif would imo defeat the purpose of the app. But again that is just my opinion and the dev can/will add any option he wants, that's just my thoughts on the idea.
EDIT: Maybe you would enjoy the quick reply feature of "Handcent" or a similar SMS app? If you haven't tried that yet maybe give it a go?.

[APP] Standby Touch - simple app for a simple job

Today I got a little bit bored and decide to make this simple app. As the name says, it allows to put the phone in Standby (Lock) with the touch of app's icon. I know that there are many many apps that do this, but maybe in the future I could add other options to it. So far it seems to work fine, I tested it with Jellbro latest nightly and works like a charm. Maybe I am too lazy, but because my phone is on the desk most of the day, I find it not very convenient to press the Power button...

Changelog for version 1.4:
1.4
- added Tasks feature
- on some ROM versions the screen my try to turn itself on again after lock, the app will double check and try to lock it again. Please provide feedback if it still does not work.
- minor graphic tweaks
You can find it on Google Play at: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.alinberce.standbytouch
Feel free to give me suggestions . Also a high rating on Google Play would help. Thanks.
App looks fine and the design is not too bad, however I do not see a point in such Apps, since a simple press on the power button does the same. It is even faster, since one of my fingers is usually very close to it anyway.
But as I said, nice work.
Thanks for this! Just got a metal bumper and its annoying to press the power button.
This works great, nice icon !
Edit: don't know why but sometimes the screen wakes up Again right after sleeping. I can't seem to reproduce the problem, seems random.

Wow that does look pretty nice.Thanks.
Quite good idea
any I like your design and interface. it's nice!
Thank you all for your kind words.
@FC1032: I never had my screen turning on after lock, but I did with other apps. I am using a clean install with no apps installed (except keyboard app). Maybe there could be a conflict with other app ? I will restore a bunch of the apps I use and see if I can manage to reproduce this. The app code is fairly simple, just access basic android functions and close itself on clock. Even the Settings page is closed when you leave it
I was thinking of adding some extra features on shutdown... what would you like to do extra, when you send your phone to standby ? How about this: if I set some interval, for instance 10 pm-8am, add some functions like: switch to silent, disable data... etc.
PS: please don't be shy, spread some 5 stars in Google Play, it will help the app to get more users. Thank you all again.

Just downloaded the app. Seems to work fine. One thing that will make it more professional is if you proof read your description on the Google Play page.
For example:
Responsibility, not Responsability
Installation, not Instalation
And the word nasTy, unless that T is supposed to be there.
These are nit picky things, but it makes the app and developer look more polished
Good luck!
Interesting request... I see one way of doing this: there is no way I could catch a double/triple touch on the app's icon, as the icon is in a Launcher app. However I could add in Settings an option with Re-Touch for Shutdown popup. Basically the App would start with a black screen, waiting for 1 seconds for another touch, if no touch it goes to standby, if touch it shows the popup. The only downside would be the shutdown command can only be run on a Rooted device (not really a problem for Nexus ).
Are there other users who would find this feature useful ?
@Cyberdan3: thank you for your corrections. Now it's fixed.
PS: thank you all for your ratings in Google Play... the app is starting to get some stars
@FC1032 do you still have screen wake-ups ? I am using the app since release and not even once the screen opened after lock.

Unfortunately it seems that depending on ROM version (I've tested quite a few), sometimes there is a issue with screen starting again after lock. There are two ways of making things, one simpler and one more complex. I will go with the simpler one first and see feedback. I am preparing a new version which will add a really neat feature... but because I want to keep the design path of the settings page, also on the new feature, I will need to spend some time in the drawing app
Sneak preview of the new version... it just entered testing phase
Ok guys, new version is on Google Play. I did not have enough time to make extensive testing so this may have some bugs on the tasks feature. The Task feature allows you to define intervals in which the Sound/Data/Wifi are On or Off. The app, when you perform a lock will check and update the device of the status as set in Tasks. In order to avoid repetitive operations and prevent battery usage, the check is made only ONCE per interval. So for example if you set the phone to be silent from 22 - 07 and you lock your phone at 22:15, if you reopen and use it, when you lock it again, the app will only make simple lock without all the checks again. If some of you prefer it otherwise, please let me know so I could add an extra setting for it.
As I said earlier, there are some ROM versions where the screen comes On again after lock. The only way I found to handle this is to relock the device after half of second again. So you may notice a slight screen on, but most of the time it will not.
Please let me know if you find any bugs. Thanks.

Post your (T-Mo GS4) software pet peeves

We all have them - and it will help ROM devs to know what "the people" want to be changed.
Mine include the clutter in the notification bar, particularly the WiFi Calling item, and the "suggested activities" on plugging in headphones. I'll let you guess which I've already removed.
e: If it's a major missing feature like real lock screen widgets or photo sphere, it probably doesn't belong in this thread, nor does hardware items.
You know you can now hide the wifi calling by long pressing on it in the notification bar, going to app info, and clicking to turn off notifications? It removes the icon and keeps your wifi calling intact.
Widgets. Battery drains I never use.
Stock Samsung colors.
Non-inverted apps.
How about PhotoSphere? I heard it's not on the S4, even though it has 4.2.2.

That's The Way It Is for now. I should clarify, this thread is for annoying "features" or outright bugs, not missing ones.
Only the icons in notification bar for now. But I can live with it.

the eye scroll feature sucks balls. I was expecting too much.
Power button. Small, almost flush, with weak tactile feedback/click.

Unfortunately, it is not. Fortunately, that's the one I've already taken care of.
Another one:
I have a dead/black pixel almost right in the center of the screen. I though OLED displays don't have stuck/dead pixels. Confused.

As per the OP, this kind of thing isn't for this thread. If you can confirm the issue, contact T-Mo or Samsung for a replacement.
