Other Interesting Info ...
shnn2011 ..
Many people have reported to me that their tethering no longer works even after killing the tethering manager.
Many have asked me to look into this, here are my findings..
It seems that T-Mobile has implemented a new hidden APN in their ROMs. When you activate tethering, your connected devices seem to be routed through a different APN than your phone uses which is where the block is, if you have not paid the tax.The answer:A. For users:Create a new APN name called "Tethering" and copy the information from your T-Mobile APN to it. There is no need to activate this APN. Immediately after doing so you should regain your full connection. Tested on a SGH-T989 (T-Mobile SGS 2) and reported to work.*B. Mostly for ROM authors:Edit the appropriate configuration files and change all APNs (usually "epc.pcweb.com") to "epc.tmobile.com" or any other working APN such as MVNO APNs ("simple" . . .)All test reports submitted to me report this is working and that my theory was accurate.

My testing says at first boot these are hard coded to the system. I'm not able to get settings to stick post boot. Change these before flashing your rom and it should be permanent.
This changes routing overall, its permanent and even though you get an error in settings works fine if you toggle from the taskbar.

I am an unlimited 4G subscriber and I got tethering to work on v36.
I used the APN settings referenced here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=32763688&postcount=1875
And saved the new APN. When you save the APN, the other necessary info is populated in the newly-created APN. Then, I went back into my new APN and added ",dun" to the end of the APN Type section. I then saved the APN again, selected it, and rebooted. Once the phone booted back up, I started tethering via the toggle and it worked. I'm currently watching Netflix on the Xbox and typing this on my laptop using tethering

I am Using .. UVALJ4 Should Work On: UVALH2 - UVALJ4
I do not see why It wouldn't ..
If Someone wants to test it for me ..
Same Setup as Instructed .. Lets Hope It Does!
I also Can Make New APN's For Other Carriers If they Need it.

interesting. I had pretty much given up on using Wifi tether on stock
I switched to CM10 a while ago.. but I may just restore my backup to test this.

tested this on frosty ics v3 , gave me native tethering!!!!!! posted from hotspot!!!! oh yea wifi and usb working.

I'm going to try this on my T mobile note 2 wish me luck!

Still getting the upsell. Is this supposed to remove the upsell page?
I was able to tether on ICS with wifi tether or svtp before; I only had to change the UA string with the browser or use a VPN on the computer to route the data.
This really didn't do anything different for me.

Hmmm .. works for me .. No UA Change.
May have to change UA string with the browser.
If you been banned already
IDK .. That Sucks ..

confirmed !! it works on my note 2 on t mobile thank u !!!!! :good:

Ok I was able to connect using an open network instead of secured, but I got the stupid upsell page too. Damn T-Mobile...

I can confirm this works on Wildchild's Xquizit ROM v36.
Until now, all the APN change suggestions floating around did not work for me. I was always able to connect to the hotspot, but I would get the T-Mobile error page.
This fix DOES WORK! I followed the steps for Option 1 install and I am currently sending this message from my laptop tethering off of my mobile hotspot. I had almost given up hope on tethering.
Is it ok for me to have Wild include this fix into his ROM?
Thank you for this fix!
*EDIT* If you port this fix into the ROM or if anyone applies the fix manually, MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT ATTEMPT to enable hotspot via the settings menu. This will overwrite the changes the fix made to your APN settings and you will get the Tmobile error page again. If this happens, just rerun the delete APN option APN Backup and Restore and then restore the APN fix file again, reboot and you should be good to go. Only enable hotspot via Wanam's hotspot toggle!!

BTW this works regardless of kernal, stock or custom.
You must be a tmobile based tw rom.

I don't see how this works because as long as you are connected to T-Mobile service you are using THEIR data servers and unless you edit their programming on their servers to not sniff for the UA there is no special apn that is connected to T-Mobile which will bypass the sniffing. You can however use a VPN to encrypt your data packets.
For those who "claim" to have it working, you most likely are not on the truly unlimited plan or have not been blocked yet.

correct im on an old mytouch data plan and it wouldnt work before the apn changes. but yes ive never been caught either.

FWIW, I performed installation option 1 on my Tmo Note II to no avail. Wifi Tether does not work, built in hotspot does not work. I have been caught before and am now on the unlimited data package.

It's a routing hack, plain and simple.

BTW WildChild has added the hack I posted into his rom and we've fully got tethering working.
I posted more detailed instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=33452688&postcount=2450
And further sent him this tonight to cleanup and make it easier:
datafoo said:
Couple quick things:
I've cleaned up the hack a bit. We can eliminate the pop-up error and make it simpler, eliminate some confusion.
In all cases tethering must be activated from the taskbar, modifications are made from within settings.
1. delete TetheringProvisioning.apk from the builds. I decompiled it and its not critical, it in fact causes the pop-up errors.
2. Add back:
Feature.xml
<CscFeature_Setting_HideApnList>epc.tmobile.com</CscFeature_Setting_HideApnList>
This will hide the new apn that's added each time you activate tethering. it neither enables or disables it.
3. Add back:
customer.xml
but with the original changes I made. This will make sure tethering routes through epc.tmobile.com. This file actually hard codes which gateway services use.

it's actually pretty simple. Let me help you understand. It involves 'routing'.
The default gateway that they try to enforce for tethering is pcweb.tmobile.com. As long as you are routed through that gateway they control tethering. If you change the default routing to epc.tmobile.com it's the same gateway all normal internet traffic is routed and they have no direct idea it's anything other than normal data traffic.
They will indeed still sniff the IE UA string but that's a simple fix both in IE by changing the UA string and or if you use Firefox, Chrome or any other browser which does not send the IE UA.
I'm hard blocked on T-Mobile with the 4G Unlimited plan. I've recieved the hard block push messages and verified it's blocked on my account.
For best results you should also remove 'TetheringProvision.apk'. I decompiled it and it's only there to re-add the pcweb route and pop the error if you dont have tethering on your plan. the customer.xml doc is the hard setting for the routing of GPS, MMS, Tethering and basic Web.
I've personally torn it down and tested it. It works. It's the same basic process we use on HTC.
Enjoy!

Thanx Buddy finally after days got the Tethering on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2.

Notes on my experince
Did method one here:
- I couldn't get TB or Rom Toolbox to convert the app to a system app, and Android Commander wouldn't see root even though I have root and an insecure kernel via debloated stock. I ended up copying the app to the system apps folder using Rom Toolbox Root Browser. This worked fine to move it.
- To "close" the app I had to go into settings and foce close it. Works every time.
I installed the "Tethering Widget" from the play store.
Update: Nope, started getting the webpages and such. Seems the tether stopped working.
BASTARDS!
(Note 2 - T889)

It looks like Tmobile caught on. I was able to get 1-2 hours today on laptop until I was redirected to their hot spots page. So.... Is it all gone now?

[ROM][v1.0.2]Orange Sense- Ported Sense (Desire Z) on EXT4 - Faux123 [Mar-25-2011]

Critical Kernel Patch:
You MUST Apply this PATCH first In order to upgrade your ROM with future kernel updates from me...(You only need to do this EXACTLY 1 time, then afterwards you may update to my new kernel whenever they are available)
[Kernel Update Instructions]
This is my second ROM cooking... The reason I created this ROM is NOT TO COMPETE with anyone else, it is mainly for myself. I wanted a pure stock Sense ROM that's STABLE and FAST but I also wanted to try something slightly different (And I needed a stable pure stock Sense ROM for myself to test my kernels against.)
I WON'T BE Updating this ROM unless something is Seriously WRONG with it...
(I WON'T BE taking FEATURE REQUESTS and such, most can be added by yourself from various mods found in the Theme and Apps sub forum )
So here it is: Orange Sense ?!?!?!?
Why the name:
Because ClockworkMod Recovery (3.0.0.5+) for Gingerbread is colored Orange for EXT 4 partitions and since this ROM uses EXT 4 File System (FS) as its primary FS, I decided to name it this way.
So what is in this Orange Sense?
[NOTE: This is a FROYO BASED (Android 2.2.1) Sense 2.0 Implementation. This is NOT the NEW Gingerbread (Android 2.3.3) Sense which is 2.1 ]
1. Completely rebuilt from Stock Desire Z Image hosted here (RUU_Vision_hTC_Asia_HK_CHT_1.84.708.1, the last one)
2. Uses exclusively EXT 4 FS
3. Moved all optional Apps to /data/app partition for easy uninstall (including most Google Apps)
4. Rooted, /system set to RW by default
5. Deodexed, Zip aligned all /system/apps and framework files using ROM kitchen from fellow XDA member.
6. Dalvik memory boosted from default 24MB to 36MB
7. Few CFS tweaks
8. Added WiFi Calling, Swype and Qik video chat.
I want to [Thank] the following:
Evil D for inspiring me to port a Non-Glacier ROM to MT4G. I also KANGED his HTC Camera App to work with FFC and Back cameras and I used his Desire Z port as a guide/reference when I was porting this version.
rmk40 for super user / sqlite3 hack that I KANGED to fix the SU/sqlite3 FCs on ported Sense ROMs.
dsixda for the easy to use ROM kitchen (highly recommended to anyone interested in cooking their own ROM, it CAN'T be easier than what he provided)
Installation:
The File ==> Orange Sense Version 1.0.2 <==
Patch 1: Kernel PATCH (use for updating to newer kernels)
Patch 2: wpa_supplicant Patch (use for fixing WiFi connection issues when connecting to hidden SSID routers)
WARNING: The INSTALLER WILL ERASE ALL USER DATA AND SYSTEM DATA!!!
Requirement: MUST HAVE CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY 3.0.0.5 or 3.0.0.6 (preferred)
1. Reboot into recovery
2. Wipe Cache Partition
3. Install zip from SDCard
4. Once installation is completed, select Reboot System Now
Note: Upon first reboot may take up to 4~6 mins.
Patch Note: To apply patch, reboot into recovery, install the patch zip file, then reboot...
The following pre-installed Apps will need to be updated MANUALLY from Market by searching for their names:
Adobe Reader
Facebook (Not the built-in integrated Sense version)
Twitter (Not the built-in integrated Sense version)
Youtube
Google Mail
Google Search
Google Maps
Google Street
Google VoiceSearch
Qik Video Chat
or they can all be easily un-installed because they are NO LONGER System Apps.
Bugs/Incompatibilities:
1. Any Real-Time Streaming Video Player will have a yellow/blue play icon stuck in the middle of video (annoying but still watchable). This is due to framework / library mismatch... I will investigate on this but not super high priority...
2. Pure Sense Framework is HUGE... I can't test all combinations, so there might be bugs here and there... Report them on this thread and I try to address them (Remember this is a PORT of a ROM designed for another phone... so things may not lined up completely.)
Standard Disclaimer: Not responsible for bricking your phone, voiding your warranty, or any other pain or suffering you may feel as result of using this ROM or Kernel!!!

LOL, it's funny you posted this.. because I am running it right now at work and listening to music and the name is prefect... I don't know why you are seeing that...
Ok so I put music on my SD card and now it's working fine. Earlier I was streaming from my pc and it was saying that. Maybe it's just because I was streaming music? Sorry I forgot to clarify

Delete preset bookmarks in default jelly bean browser?

How do I delete preset bookmarks in the default jelly bean browser? I always get the message that they cannot be deleted. I also tried to move them to one folder and that was a no go. And no I do not want to run a differnt browser for various reasons. I appreciate any help.
I am running DarthStalker v.9

Try this
I saw this on another forum. I think it is what you are looking for.
I found a solution to the locked bookmarks.
Requirements:
- Root access
- Root file explorer
- SQLite editor app
Steps
1) Open the SQLite database located at:
/data/data/com.android.browser/databases/browser2.db
2) Open the 'opbookmarks' table
3) Delete all the rows
4) Delete the bookmarks from the browser, like you would delete any other bookmark
It's as simple as that. Those rows correspond to the bookmarks in the 'bookmarks' table and (I guess) just put a lock on them.

You rang (in Lurch voice)?
Here is the thread that Flamnace got that from. Also there are two other methods in that thread on page two that might work as well.
you can edit system\csc\customer.xml (of the ROM your using then flash it after compressing)
on my STOCK SLIM rom, i remove the 9 default bookmarks, and add back in 2 (XDA-Q+A, XDA-Dev)
here is code notepad++ (around 177 start)
<Browser>
<CookieOption>accept</CookieOption>
<HistoryList>on</HistoryList>
<NbBookmark>2</NbBookmark> <!-- Orig 9, I Deleted 9 STOCK Bookmarks, added 2 back -->
<Bookmark> <!-- Custom Book Mark -->
<NetworkName>T-Mobile</NetworkName>
<Editable>no</Editable>
<Index>1</Index>
<BookmarkName>XDA - Dev</BookmarkName>
<URL>http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1645</URL>
</Bookmark>
<Bookmark> <!-- Custom Book Mark -->
<NetworkName>T-Mobile</NetworkName>
<Index>2</Index>
<BookmarkName>XDA - Q+A</BookmarkName>
<URL>http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1714</URL>
<Editable>no</Editable>
</Bookmark>
See where it says Editable above and NO in middle...i bet if you put YES... you could remove them or edit them.

Its easy first go to settings - application manager - scroll right to all - click on internet (stock web browser ) clear data than force stop. Re open web browser now u should be able to delete all stock bookmarks that came with it.

This worked, thanks. I honestly didn't think it was going to because I figured the bookmarks were embedded in the browser somehow, but it did. Kudos!
I do wish this site would stop redirecting me to Badoink, though. What the hell? I thought XDA was pretty legit.

Add option to "Clear Prefered APN" (Check this when you use "Enable Native Hotspot" if you want to clear the prefered apn setting.) NOTE: On s3 It is fine to just reboot. Yes all Sprint Galaxy devices are supported. If no subscription nag pops up it is activated. Check your hotspot config/advanced settings if you are having trouble connecting to it
Your devices may not like the default settings.

2) Add the following 2 lines of code at the bottom of the file and save.

fw.max_users=5
3) Reboot and start adding new users or guest users.

just a quick question.. after enabling and setting up user accounts, do u also lose some quick setting toggles??
yes at least in my case I missed the screen rotation toggles and Sometimes when I change from administrator to a different user my mobile data connection is lost, i just have to enable again with a toggle, is a small price to pay for having multi-user while we wait for the new update 5.1.1

Hello friend! Sorry to bother you after a long time since you posted this comment! But I'm very desperate because I'm using a new rom on my Note 4, it's the sixperience port to Note 5!I enabled multi users but when I try to set up a new user or switch to guest mode the device soft boot as you wrote here in your comment! Could please help or give me a clue? I'm not lazy, I'm just looking for a way to start to try to fix this! Sorry about the english! Thanks in advance!
try to be sure you have all the dots and stripes down each line. in multiuserui also make sure is equal to 5 and users equal to 1
No theme option in user mode.
While the editing of the build.prop file works great to get multi user available.
I cannot find any way of changing the theme while on another user.
Anyone know a way?
Ps: this is my first post. Thanks to all the custom rom devs who made my Android experience easier!
