[Q] Any confirmed Devs sticking around? - LG Optimus G (International)

I know that how much we can do with any given phone is really up in the air at this point...
However, I am wondering how many people are still interested in this device and will still give it a shot even it requires some fiddling with the boot loaders and what not.
I completely understand if no one wants to dev here but, as someone who really doesn't have the option of nexus-y goodness, I figure it isn't beyond reason that some people will at least try to tinker with this one.

I'm definitely interested and will probably be here in january. Hopefully the bootloader will be unlocked by then. If not, I will try to figure out how to do that.

Awesome.
I won't be able to upgrade till December but, it's not like I have a lot of places to go really in terms of options.

Very encouraging, gentlemen. Would this potential development be compatible with the F180 model? I am currently living in South Korea, waiting for my current phone contract to expire next month and (finally) purchase my first Android device.

Yeah, I will do stuff for all variants if I get one. I can probably make a flashable zip that can detect which device you are on and throw the right files in corresponding to your device.

Well sir, I am about 96% convinced that I will be getting this phone (the F180) and would be more than happy to provide any sort of assistance/ file dumps as requested/ required.

Pretty sure a few roms have that for the s1 variants.

I was going to get a Nexus 4, but alas since it's gsm only looks like I'll be getting the Optimus G. It'll be a nice upgrade from my heroc. With luck I'll get it on the 11th. First mission will be the bootloader.
I currently maintain cm10 for the heroc, so I have a bit of experience around the block.
Once the bootloader is unlocked, this will basically be the nexus for us Sprint users. Nearly identical specs will make development a breeze.

It will pretty much be the Nexus for me assuming unlocked bootloaders.

I placed my pre-order today through wirefly.. only $149.. Definitely looking forward to it.

I probably will as long as the boot loader is unlocked by Jan, which is when my contract ends, or if the nexus boot loader works.

Yeah source is lacking. I've followed all the rumors and at&t and Verizon have been pretty quiet in the rumor mills.
Sprint have officially announced a Oct 25 release date though
T-Mobile has a leaked image stating the 24th, but that was a week and half ago, but supposedly another leak shows that demo devices are being sent to stores
Heard T-Mo confirmed in stores this week.
Anyone hear same thing for At&t?
AT&T just announced Pre-order Oct. 25th with it being available Nov. 9 in all stores.

But I am new to the Droid world. Aren't sprint and verizon looked down upon for late/slow updates and locked phones?
That and Sprint plans don't include mobile hot spot..which puts them on par cost wise with the new shared plans at AT&T and Verizon.

I called a sprint store and talked to this sprint rep that i had a conversation at the store with a while ago and he seems to be quite up to date and knowledgeable. he called the october 25th release before sprints big announcement. anyway he said earlier today that sprint stores should be getting the phones either tomorrow or thursday. the rumors of the 25th being a preorder date are most likely false, and i trust this guy enough to believe that we should be able to stop in at a sprint store thursday morning and pick up the best phone to date
hope you guys are as excited as i am
Does anybody know what the full price will be for the phone on sprint? Thanks

Verizon makes it pretty hard to get into the cookie jar while Sprint lets you in.
Sprints Galaxy S2 leaks flood development thanks to member "Sextape" thus xda development is pretty busy on device.
"Sextape" dropped Sprint leak for Sprint GN2 a couple weeks ago device not released so that's a good sign for things to come.

Yes...i am trying to learn the droid terminology. I've had an iPhone for 5 years and have only been concerned with Jailbreaking that.
Could you explain what people mean when I read "Verizon's phone has a locked bootloader". I took that as saying you couldn't root it to install the new rom.
Might want to update the title.

Verizon makes Samsung put up roadblocks that delay development from cracking bootloader / obtaining root.
There's always worry crack cant be achieved but it does so no worries.

Locked bootloader basically just means you cant flash a custom kernel (i know its more im trying to keep it simple). Devs sometimes have workarounds for roms like kexec on the GS3 for instance.
With the note 2 i dont think ill be flashing it despite being a flashaholic for 4 years now. Just root to get rid of the bloat.
Thanks for the info everyone. Sorry of this is getting off topic.
So Samsung wants us to be able to do this, so there aren't any warranty issues? Where as Sony/HTC track who does it? Or are there work arounds for that too?

[Q] Planning an upgrade!

Let me start off with saying sorry if this is the wrong thread/forum to locate this:
I have an upgrade with AT&T that I can use and I am highly interested in the Galaxy S3, however I am more cautious than my last upgrade because I previously upgraded to the Nokia Lumia 900 and just a few weeks later, they released no windows 8 upgrade, etc for it. I am worried that if I plan to get the S3 somehow I will miss out on the next S4. I guess what I am asking is should I wait or go ahead with the upgrade. I am interested in it now, because I can get it for 149.99 and get a free $50 dollar credit to the google play store. Any advice would be great, thanks!
The S3 is a great phone with really good dev support. The S4 hasn't even been announced yet so that means it's going to be over 6 months before the US ever sees it. If I were you I would get the S3 now. At $150 +$50 play store credit that is a pretty decent deal.
We just got 4.1 jellybean and 4.2 (I think) is looking promising, hopefully. I mean, we still have approximately a year left of support from Sammy.

If any kind of SIV is releasing in April, it would be the international version, and even that is highly unlikely.
An announcement of the international version might come in April, but I highly doubt that the U.S variants will be in stores before June at the earliest.

If that's the case, I will most definitely not be purchasing it. I can only imagine the update delays when there are multiple carrier variants floating around. In fact, I think I'm done with carrier-branded phones altogether. As noted by another user, the GS3 is not going to become obsolete any time soon, so I may just hold out until the next Nexus, in hopes that it'll come with LTE. ::fingers crossed::
I think I am going to get it, best chance is now!

Its gotta be boring for developers with the lack of att support right? Can we get a developers opinion on this? I imagine theres only so much a developer can do. It sucks I threw down 249.99 for a phone that's poorly supported by at&t..

It's hard when carriers have control over updates. Ports can only get you so far and since they're not designed for our device it's hard to get everything working 100%. I personally don't like ports and try to stick with what was released for our devices, but some ports turn out better than others. You'll see a lot more development on newer devices and a lot of aosp based development on older devices because aosp bypasses the carriers but can be finicky sometimes because of the closed source proprietary libraries that carriers use.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747
As AT&T has always been the last to get updates if at all, the best way to send a message about that is to stop using AT&T. I have a work phone and tablet on AT&T that have never been updated from Gingerbread or Honeycomb respectively, yet the manufacturer has the ICS updates on their site.
At&t is pretty bad but nothing is worse than Verizon. I was with them for a long time and att is much better imo. It may be different is this case but historically Verizon gets updates last. I am going back to prepaid or tmo when my contract up though. I love all the ROMs we have for the gs3, even if they are ports they all work pretty good to me. I truly appreciate all the developer support this device still gets.

Definitely appreciate the developers for doing all that they do for us. Couldn't ask for more.
I may be leaving AT&T behind as well. I was thinking of heading to Sprint next year when the contract ends, depending on if Sprint's LTE coverage has improved. I'd really like truly unlimited data for the same/cheaper price than AT&T gives for pretty sad amounts.

Maybe it's just this will be the third time I have gone through this. First with the behold 2, was promised to us that we would get froyo, which never happened. Second with vibrant, which was promised gingerbread, which also never happened. After that I went through nexus s, nexus s4g then galaxy nexus. Gnex was a bad daddy phone that still can hang with the newest. I was on the fence whether to get nexus 4(which my wife has) or the note. I decided that the screen and pen were more important to me then having newest software. I knew 100% what I was getting into. In the past I have complained to tmobile, signed petitions, complained to samsux, with null results. You may call me a corporate sheep, while I call myself an educated consumer.

one scenario would be once samsung releases the final build -- cyanogenmod gets ahold of it and and puts together a tmobile port for it -- and they start charging for roms maybe. they are in business now to make money and their stable roms tend to be just that.. i'd pay a reasonable amount for a stable rom with all the bells and whistles. I said CM since they went public as a corp- other modders have great roms too

Doubt cm will port an OEM ROM, and especially now that they are technically a OEM. Their goal is to sell the cm experience. Now that they are a corporate they are now for profit. Now no one knows exactly how they are going to acneive that goal. Ads, teaming up with an OEM like Google does with lg and has done with Samsung and HTC. Maybe they will have their own app store. Maybe charge for the installer. Who knows

It will sometime this year, but Verizon in particular is notoriously slow in pushing major Android updates to their customers. There is a good chance big red will be the last major carrier to push it out.

This is sadly why I jumped to the 6P in November. I never realized how nice it was to be able to mod and customize your phone any way you want, and have actual 100% stable stock Android ROMs.

I just signed up for Project Fi and ordered the 6P with 128GB storage. I'm ditching Verizon AND what they did to the great G4. It's a shame, too. It's such an excellent phone, but it's just so... neutered.
Any possibility for a unlocked bootloder in the future?
