For all of the flash-a-holics out there, this is huge. I'm going to finally break down and buy a Titanium Backup Pro key. I've been using Ultimate Backup Pro for a while now, but screw them.

Yep. It works very well to.

props to an epic app!!

This is actually pretty awesome. It was always tedious to have to get my phone half way set up and download titanium backup pro, then install all my apps. One click zips is just too cool.

If anyone has already done this, mind posting the steps necessary to get it done?

Its under batch, scroll down till you see recovery mode, only one option that says create update.zip. Correct me if i am wrong.

This is music to my ears. As a recovering flashaholic, I fully realize how much time it takes to restore 100+ apps. Plus, I always feel like my phone is so laggy during the restore, so it really does take about 15-20 minutes. This step will be a HUGE time saver.
The one question I have is does the first boot take longer? Would you almost recommend flashing the ROM and booting first, let the ROM settle and then boot to recovery and flash the TB zip?

This is what I would probably feel more comfortable doing. I would like to make sure the actual ROM boots up first lol

Do you need to sign the update.zip before flashing? If so, what is everyone using to sign the file?

I actually didn't try flashing the zip yet, just did a backup for next time i flash a rom, so i don't know if it needs to be signed sorry. Maybe someone else can answer the question?

I flashed it no problem. Do not use the update.zip function in recovery. Just flash like a normal zip.

1. You need to boot up first then reboot recovery for it to flash.
2. In my case flashed correctly but all apps were FCing and a lot of lag and freezes.
3. Stick to old way till they fix the problem.

Finally they fix it. app+data update.zip wasn't compatible with odexed systems.

File is located in root Internal Storage by default.

Did my restore, worked great! I was a little surprised by the fact that my phone automatically rebooted, but everything works fine.

It is not necessary to sign update.zip unless you are using a stock recovery. Since most of us are rooted, I imagine we're also using a custom recovery so it won't be necessary. Like another user said, just flash it like normal.

After I create update.zip, can I edit it on my PC to add/remove items?

Stock nandroid restore also with flashable zip *updated 2/27/2012*

this a stock nandroid backup, there is no GOOGLE ACCOUNT associated with this. if you find superuser is gone you will need to get it from the market, same with rommanager.just extract and put it in >clockworkmod>backup on sd, then boot into recovery and restore backup.
if you are having problems with corrupt files on youre sd then i suggest saving clockworkmod folder and reformat sd then add the folder back with this inside the backup folder.
DOWNLOADS STOCK 2.2 RESTORE (WITH ROOT)
IF YOU ARE DOING THIS TO SEND THE PHONE BACK OR ANYTHING LIKE THAT AND PLAN TO TURN S-ON AGAIN BE SURE TO DO IT AFTER YOU FINISH THE RESTORE
IF YOU ARE ON CM7 WITH NEW RECOVERY, YOU MUST REVERT BACK TO OLDER CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY FOR THIS TO WORK
ALSO EVEN IF YOU DONT SEE CWM RECOVERY ITS STILL THERE(TRUST ME) YOU WILL NEED TO ADD STOCK RECOVERYhere is a link for stock recovery images (before and after update) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=843289

thank you for telling me. new links are up and working
FYI the phone is totally usable without ANY accounts setup. After I re-flashed mine with the stock image I didn't bother to sign in or create accounts for anything and the phone worked fine except not letting me use market until I did. So you may want to re-dump a nandroid w/o even a dummy account to avoid issues of "OMG PRIVATE DATAZ" from people in PMs.

No... people should make sure they know what they are doing before doing a backup.
For example, the stock rom on this phone "automatically" syncs some contact data with T-Mobile. Wipe the phone and make a backup, and before you get the chance to make the backup, that phone contact database has already be automatically downloaded from T-Mobile. If you don't do the wipe/backup right, you WILL end up posting your private data.

yes it includes the update. from what I understand there is no way to permanently unroot the phone until htc patches what we used to root in the first place . I maybe wrong but that's the way I understood it

No, just saying from my own experience when I re-flashed with the stock 2.2 zipfile to restore some system apps I had deleted, that the phone functioned fine w/o ever setting up any accounts on it. Just skipped through all the setup screens and started using it.
edit: Which is very different from the G1 (where I came from) that only allowed 911 calls w/o a Google Account setup.
By the way, when you say "Stock", is this PRE-OTA "Stock", or Post-OTA "Stock" ?

[Q]How to read ext4.win files?

Hey all,
I'm wondering how to read / extract a filename.ext4.win file?
Using Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit, i recently flashed AOKP's JB build 2 to my Gnex, and wiped my phone in the process (intentionally).
The phone works great with the new ROM and all. but I forgot that my data folder also got wiped, and with it all my savegames for various apps.
Before flashing I used the tool to make a nandroid ("Nandroid backup /w Custom Recovery"), and I'm guessing I can find the files I need in that backup. The tool saved the backup as [data/cache/system/recovery].ext4.win files.
I have tried using ext2explore to read the data file, but it doesn't show anything.
TL;DR
How can I read a ext4.win file in Windows?
i thought backups were saved in *.tar.

I don't know how it's usually done, but this tool saves it in 4 "ext4.win" files and a "recovery.emmc.win" file.

As it says in OP: yes I used the toolkit (Wugfresh's Nexus Root Toolkit) to make a nandroid, because it makes it easier (for me) to backup, wipe and flash with a single click.
The toolkit's thread is in a dev section, which I'm not allowed to post in due my "noob" status on these forums.
So that was very helpful, thanks.
I tried Linux Reader you linked to, but still no luck.
I says that the filesystem is not supported.
Twrp also saves nandroids in this extension.
Op: use titanium backup to load up the nandroid (menu -> extract from nandroid backup).

Ah Team Win - that's right, it's what the toolkit uses for backups. Thanks.
I had to get the paid version of TB to use the extraction, extracted only data and it worked to some extend. Some of my games got their savegames restored, but e.g. TinyStation did not - Which is the game I'm most eager to restore the savegames to. I also tried to extract app+data for this one, but it didn't work.
But thanks a lot geoff! =)
Not all games work with backup programs. Which really sucks. But tb is a GREAT app to have, especially the purchased version.
BTW, was it a different ROM you flashed or was it an updated ROM you flashed? If it WS an update, you might be able to restore your nandroid and then flash the update.

Sucky. I emailed the developer asking where the savegames are stored, so let's see if they'll be able to help.
Yea, TB is great - definitely my backup app from now on.
It was an updated ROM. I flashed from Kang's JB build 1 to build 2.
But yea, restoring the nandroid and flashing without wiping is the next step, but it ****ed my phone last time, so I was hoping to avoid messing around with it again.
Actually I might just have realized why it didn't work the first time. =)
I'll give then app dev 'till tomorrow, and then I'll restore and reflash.
Thanks again, geoff.

ok then find a zip that does work properly for you and extract your data and data/app folder if you like and place it in the new update.zip.
I personally take one of the inverted gapps zip or regular gapps zip and fix it to my liking by placing my data apps that I have gotten from the program apps2zip. By doing this you are ensured the zip works fine since its generic and you know all the apps from your phone should be restored properly. Just run fix permissions prior to booting up again
I find that some of the apps recover OK but some of the others will just FC; I guess it is the ones that have data that freeze - I end up having to uninstall and do a fresh install. I'm not sure this happened with 2.2.0,

Force close when I try to get into 3G hotspot settings

I am getting a force close when I try to get into 3G hotspot settings, this is most likely related to the fact that I can no longer use my phone as a hotspot with ease.

Rooted, running andi bones.
it use to work fine, now I restore some backups but none cure the problem.
I have tried factory reset, and every backup I have and the problem is still there.
OK, I ended up going back to stock and installing the original rom I was running, now it's working, I think this got messed up when I tried UKB rom, and all my backups newer than stock would not take care of the problem.
Now I want to delete some of the backups and save a new backup, but I have not found the location of the backup files.

If you want help you've got to give us info. What recovery are you using? For twrp there is a folder on your sd card called twrp. I don't remember the name for the cwm folder because I haven't used it for a long time. I've never used 4ext, so if you are on that you'll have to wait for someone else's input.

I have rooted. Now what?

Noobie here. I have rooted, but where do I go from here? Can I flash any rom to it? What roms do you recommend? I would love to change that annoying At&t boot intro! Thanks, everyone.
Welcome. Once are rooted, you basically have access to the system files on your phone. It is sort of like having access to the windows registry on any windows computer terminal access on any linux box. You can delete apps and other things "such as the boot up and down tones and videos", and customize the phone anyway you like. Be warned, unless you back up your phone... you are in for a lot of trial and error being new. the best thing to do is to sit back and let developers develop, and follow anyone instructions word for word.

Did you install recovery? You need recovery to backup your phone and install new roms.
Get titanium backup and backup your apps. Makes life a whole lot easier when you restore the apps with your preferences instead of downloading one by one. You do not need to backup system apps.
Once you have backups you can try different things. If something doesn't work you can go back to recovery and restore.

Titanium is good for an App level backup, but not a full recovery.
You'll need a little bit more experience before you totally hose your phablet.
1) get and load a nandroid recovery such as ClockWorkMod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP).
2) make a system backup... FIRST, NOW. you will be happy to fall back to this if you FUBAR your phone.
Then play with ROMs if you must. I would recommend sticking to AT&T ROMs until you know more about the affects to the various partitions that could get overwritten and thus posibly brick your phone, posibliy out of warranty.
After successful testing of a ROM candidate... Make another full backup to preserve your current position.
Use Titanium to bring back your App level backups as needed (your progress, data, etc will come back) I hate re-doing angry birds after each flash.
