[Q] Note II MHL > HDMI issues - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all.
I've searched for similar questions and can't find anything that gives me an answer... so here goes.
Model number: GT-N7100 (Samsung Galaxy Note 2)
Android version: 4.1.1
Modifications: None.
Problem:
- Connect MHL cable to phone.
- Connect power
- Connect HDMI to tv & MHL
- Phone pops up a message on screen advising that HDMI connection has been made.
- No output from phone to tv.
I tried originally with the wrong MHL cable designed for a Galaxy S2 (established this thanks to a post I found on here, thanks). Then replaced with one designed for the S3 which should (according to what i read) also work with the Note2.
Am I missing something here?
The cable used was from Amazon and is not a samsung original part. But before spending more money to get the samsung part i want to be sure i exhausted all options with the cheaper alternative.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give.

my theory is it has something to do with all share cast

I bought a 'generic' adapter at first, did not work. Ended up going with the Samsung adapter...worked fine...

make sure yr MHL cable/adaptor is compatible for note2/s3, they use different pins with older model

Hi all.
Thanks for the replies. [will do the whole thanks button thing in a minute].
I threw the adapter in a drawer for the weekend and pulled it back out this morning to have another crack at it.
Its the cheap n nasty adapter that is at fault. I shoved the connector into the bottom of the phone really hard this time, and instead of black, the tv screen went green. All green. A bit of jiggling later and i had phone output on the tv, but its a very sketchy connection and a slight knock loses the connection, even though the phone still thinks the cable is connected still.
Only problem then is that there is no audio coming through the tv. All phone settings suggest there should be.
So i went upstairs to try on another tv, and it works perfectly with video and audio (once the cable is rammed home good and hard).
Problem solved. For now, it will do. But I will at some point be investing in the genuine samsung part that should do the job properly. And a new TV for the living room ~ current one is old and was a budget model at the time, so you can imagine how bad it is by todays standards.

Hi, can you help to check if the camera apps work when you use mhl ?

Im using the sprint gn2 do I go with the same step when connecting mhl adapter? Before you connect to television is the phone suppose to be charging? I think I have to buy the right one .I bought mine amazon from china and still have not hooked it up to my tv yet. Can there be a problem with phone? Its new never dropped

i just got my samsung MHL adapter which is for the S3 but supposedly should work with note 2 also.
when i connect the hdmi cable and the power cable and then connect it to my phone i see a popup "hdmi cable cvonnected"
however,
my monitor (Dell 2408WFP) just goes into sleep mode.
i also tried another monitor.. same thing.
i'm on android revolution with perseus kernel... which is just a modded stockrom.
i have not made a samsung account so i don't have any of the samung specific apps activated... could this be the problem?
do you need to have that sharecast or whatever to be activated first in order to get the TV out functionality?

I bought Samsung MHL adapter last month for HTC One X and it works fine even without connect the phone to charging.
I just tried that to my new Note 2 and it doesn't work at all.. already try to charge the phone still not showing anything not even a notification saying my note2 connected to the hdmi...

Is it true with the note by sprint ...it has to be sprint o/s to work and can't have a rom on phone

Having the exact same issje with the original s3 adapter. It worked fine 2 days ago and then one day from another it magically stopped working on my note 2. Still works with other devices..

ok.. i decided to actually create a samsung account and installing the all-share cast app hoping this would finally make the mhl work..
but alas..
same thing..
i connect power, mhl en and hdmi cable.... set monitor to look for hdmi signal...
phone then gives me the 'hdmi adapter connected' message and then the monitor goes into energy saving mode...
i guess my adapter is faulty.... it is supposedly a genuine brand new samsung adapter but i got it from ebay hongkong or china or whatever... so... well... you know..
i think i will order the wireless all-share hub in stead...

Are you rooted? I've read that hml doesn't work if you are.
Edit: I should have read the rest of the thread. Looks like you solved the problem.

well yeah... if getting a wireless allshare cast hub instead for 80 bucks is a solution.. then yes.. i guess it's solved..
by the way,
yes.. i have root.. where did you read that a rooted phone prevents the MHL adapter from properly working?
do you have a link or something?
in that case i could still try to persuade the Android Revolution HD Rom developer to look into the issue...

Try it using the 5V - 2A charger, i have read, somewhere i forgot, that 2A is a must for being able to use MHL.
I can't say if it is true or not, i'm atill waiting all stuff be delivered (All-share cast hub, MHL adapter, Smart Dock, etc).
Good luck

It seems like the china products r all faulty

For me the MHL cable worked well with easy disconnections (any minimal movement). But I used it with the bloutooh mouse and so I didn't feel so much the issue.
Now the note 2 doesn't reveal the cable. I plug it in and nothing happens.
I don't remember if I changed ROM before the issue but it's sure I always had a custom ROM.
Can be a ROM problem?
I will try the MHL cable with my father's s3 and let you know if is a cable issue.
EDIT:
SORRY GUYS, IS A CAVE PROBLEM. ITS DEAD

I have rooted my device also. Come to think of it, this might just be the issue. Rooted with exynosabuse gonna try to unroot and see if it works. Still want it to work with root though because i use the sixaxis to play games..

Once u unrrot your note 2 did it work with the mhl cable

[Q] MHL Adapter not working

I bought an MHL adapter from amazon and i connected it to my tv and it doesn`t work. I connected it to power, Ive rebooted my phone several times and still couldn't get it to work.
Any suggestions?

hmmm if everything is plugged in.. it should be detected right away... could it be a rom or kernel issue? undervolted kernel might cause problems because welll not enough volts obviously. a couple weeks back using faux kernel.. i couldn't use anything below -25 volts to keep a steady display.
I've had the same problem running non stock roms and kernels. My buddy has a stock SGS2 tried it worked, tried mine nothing. Try going back to stock or at least a stock rom. I just ordered my MHL adapter and are currently running Mr. X stock rom with darkside kernel, when i get my shipment ill report back. Hope this helps.
S...
Ive tried going back to the stock rom but had no luck.
My tv seems to recognize that something is plugged in, it just wont display properly. I reset the settings on my tv but that didnt work either. Hmmmm

As simple as turning on & off the tv.
I bought a cheap mlh adapter and a cheap hdmi cable from ebay and had neither the phone or the tv recognize each other. The solution was to plug in the power to the mlh adapter first, then plug it into the phone second; then turn the TV on with it switched to the correct hdmi source and finally, plug the hdmi cable into the mlh adapter. But sometimes I still have to sleep(standby screen) the phone and wake it before it work even with this method. I tried plugging and unplugging these components a few different ways but this was the one that work for me and has continued to work every time. Hope this helps.
Try plugging everything in, then rebooting your phone while it's hooked up to your tv.
Ive tried everything i can think of. Mabey the adapter is bad.

get the monoprice adapter, good and inexpensive.. unless you got it from there.. probably bad adapter lol
Easy to check
I would try plugging the power cord into the mlh adapter then into your phone, if you get power to the phone it might suggest that your hdmi cable is the culprit. If you get power to your sgs2 then I would try switching out the hdmi cable with another to rule out the cable as the bad egg. If both the mlh adapter and the cable test good then one last test would be to switching out which hdmi port you are using by changing the cable to another hdmi port. The last check is unlikely but I am just trying to cover all the bases.
This is just my two cents but sending back products tend to increase cost and adds up quickly. I tend to try every available avenue before returning products. The comment about Monoprice selling this adapter is right on, as this where i got mine for dirt cheap. Good luck with what ever you decide.
need any and all the help i can
I have a samsung galaxy s infuse 4g ... and a sony brava tv... i have bought 2 mhl adapters and 2 hdmi cables .. hooked them up in as many orders as possible as well as turning the phone off and on but still nothing does anyone have any sugestions to help make this work ???
Sounds crazy but if all else fails.
You could use the og adapter. I found on samsungs website http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones-accessories/EIA2UHUNBEGSTA
And i check if your phone the Infuse was compatible which it is. Last ditch effort take the phone and the adapters to your retail store and see if they can get them to work. Sorry, if these suggestions are not better than my above comments, but I can't think of any other measures to try. Hope you get the problem solved.

The note 2 and the s3 have different hml adapters. You will also need a converter.
On the monoprice link you posted, youll notice ab asterisk next to the s3. Same applies to the note 2.

I just got a Samsung HDTV Adapter Tip (5 to 11 Pin) Model EPL-FU10BEBSTD, which has micro-USB female to male; it enabled my TMobile "HDMI connection kit" that had worked with Galaxy S2 Hercules to work now with my Galaxy Note II. The connection kit was expensive, but has a 10' cable from the MHL adapter body to the male micro-usb plug, as well as a 5' cable to the TV HDMI, and a wall charger to power the adapter body. So the arrangement is quite flexible once installed.
I was hoping someone could help me with this problem also. I have a hdmi capable monitor that I would like to hook my note2 up to but for whatever reason the monitor will not detect the signal. i have tried rebooting and connecting it various ways but no dice.
the only thing i can think of is that its the rom im using which is myrom's latest version
Do you have 5pin or 11pin mhl cable? Note2 requires 11pin one.

I was told you need an S3 cable. Here's the one I use.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/310491287097?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2648
Yea you guys are right you need 11 pin for the note 2. the sgs2 used 5 pin so if you have one for your older phone you need a new one or I think they make a converter too. I would suggest getting right from samsung. it may cost more but you get what you pay for usually and samsung makes the best stuff when it comes to that. Also another thing to consider while you are on samsungs website they have a multimedia dock that is on backorder right now but for a 100 dollars it turns your note2 into a pc basically. It has 3 full size usb ports so you can hook up a mouse keyboard and external hard drive and it has the hdmi port and an auido port so you can hook it up to a hdmi tv/ monitor and multimedia speaker system. I was going to get a new computer but I found this thing. So basically I can have an android desktop. It dont get better than that. Now wit dropbox and mobile odin and this exynos exploit we really dont need to hook up to a pc to root so there is no real reason for it. Just something to think about.
This is really helpful. My question is will this charge your phone while you are connected to the tv? Also, I see some of the description on ebay says it might not work if you are rooted.

I am rooted; The MHL/HDMI system works well, if that is your concern. The charger that I use for the MHL adapter is much lower amperage than the one that came with the Galaxy Note 2, so I would guess that charging might be slow if you are watching a movie that way, or maybe not even keep up, but I don't have the patience to do the test (or watch movies that way).
Hmmmm!!!!
I just got the Samsung dock and can't connect with HDMI on rooted stock.
The phone detects the dock and charges up, but no signal to the screen. Also tried hooking it up with the TV and projector using two different custom rom and separate HDMI cables and no dice.
Guess the dock is defective.

[Q] Motorola Lapdock & Note 2?

Just curious if anyone has gotten the keyboard and mouse working on a lapdock with the Note 2. The HDMI works perfectly, but the keyboard and mouse don't work. I don't know if it is possible, but it would be great if someone knows how to make this happen.
Here's a picture of my set up. Everything is connected so it *should* work. I'm thinking that it is a driver issue.
(The lapdock keyboard & mouse work great with Ubuntu 12.04, & Windows 7, & Raspberry Pi (Raspian), so I know that my connections are fine.)
Thanks!
Hmm, guess I'll be able to answer my own question after a bit of research. It seems that the Note 2 (like the S3) can't provide MHL & OTG at the same time.
Not sure if there is a way around this. I wonder if Samsung's SmartDock works, but I don't want to spend $100 to find out.
I'm increasingly interested in trying just this, smart dock + lapdock. Hard to imagine that it wouldn't work, but I wouldn't mind confirmation if anyone has tried it. The impressive low prices on lapdocks in the secondary market kinda offsets (and also kinda shames) the ridiculously overpriced smart dock.
I wonder if the lapdock's battery can provide as much power as the smart dock needs or if I'd have to have an external battery too.

the lap dock should provide 1 amp which is what the atrix needed and the chargers it came with. the s3 has a smart dock and it too only has 1 amp chargers...
plus I don't see the smart dock pulling more than 200mA it has to provide the s3 with at least 750 mA for the charge to survive mhl.
regardless amp drain in android devices is adaptive. even if the dock needs a full 800mA the phone will try to survive with the rest draining battery of course but working none the less just like trying to charge our 2A monster with a Bluetooth 150mA charger. it will try but at best slow down the discharge

I don't know if an MHL adapter will supply both HDMI and OTG at the same time but I know the phone is capable of it because this is how the Samsung Smart Doc works. 3 USB ports with HDMI out.

Hi I have got an S3 MHL(11pin) HDMI cable. I have tested HDMI & OTG simultaneously.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1953061&page=7
It is working perfectly with my 24inch LED monitor and a USB hub containing 2 pen drives and one wireless keyboard & mouse
Now the next move i got atrix lapdock and try to connect the HDMI out from mobile to Lapdock (with necessary adopters) but i am getting only green screen.
Lapdock is working with other HDMI sources....
Any idea on how to get my note 2 HDMI working in my lapdock?...

I've never gotten a green screen so I have no idea. And, you already did the basic troubleshooting. Are you using the Smartdock or something different? If you aren't using the Smartdock, maybe pick one up to see if it works. If it doesn't fix the problem, you can always return the Smartdock.

Based on what you are saying, it sounds like the issue is between your lapdock & MHL cable. Like I said in my previous post, I'd pick up a Samsung SmartDock and see if it works. Just make sure that yo buy from somewhere that you can easily return it in case it doesn't work.

Dear wilbr,
Thanks for the reply.
Do you use the original samsung MHL cable?...
I am using Chinese version of MHL.
HDMI troubleshooting guide says the below....
The green screen problem could be due to HDCP non compliance or syncing problem..
anything to do with HDCP and chinese cable?...
I am trying to get an samsung official MHL or a smart dock to try out. (here in india smart dock is still not avaiable). My once route to get it is through china...

The only problem is not able to get the screen in lap dock ....only green screen...

I've already got a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I'm gonna order a MicroUSB to HDMI adapter and go that route. It'll be cheaper and less to carry. When I travel I'll just be able to plug into the hotel TV and go wild!
There's a YouTube video of someone demonstrating it, just search YouTube for "Samsung Note 2 Mobile Desktop with a Bluetooth keyboard mouse"

i had a similar problem, its was a shotty solder job on the "Budget adapter" (HDMI PINS). i took it apart and cleaned it, works perfectly now.
Plug your phone in, WAIT 5 SECONDS, Then lift up.....If you still have a problem, push F11 on the Lapdock... that manual cycles the resolution modes...at least thats what the manual says....
As far as the USB key board goes, im currently working a solution.... you have to power the MHL THROUGH THE DOCKS usb port using a donated USB cable with the end cut, solder it in directly on the board of the adapter itself, then make a micro usb extension that has the power wires cut and D- D+ reversed... I have a motorola ATRIX and im looking at the board, it looks like they have been reversed....ill post up some pics if i find this to be true.

Also, sorry to bring up and old post, but I have a reason to believe that the ZOOM bluetooth keyboard uses the same 30 pin connector thats inside the lapdock (connects everything together) all the connectors are the same, except on the ZOOM the other end is a BLUETOOTH module...this would solve the whole issue... im about to get one on ebay. Ill report back in a few days.
I WILL NOT LET THIS THING BEAT ME

Help with MHL HDTV adapter

Well.... hi everyone
It's been a long time since i wrote in english xD... so sry if I make any mistake.
The problem:
I got a HDTV MHL adapter... It is original and its for s3 as far as i know it should work for the note 2... i tried tons of times to connect my GT- N7100 to my smartv and didnt work, then tried on a 3d Bravia and nothing... Yes, I connected the adapter to the power - HDMI - Device and the note starts to charge but no msj is shown... also i tried the HDMI cable with my laptop and runs perfect.
Too late but I started to read a little about any issue about it and find out it might be an issue with the root... rooted phones doesnt run mhl properly and before i run the unroot and loose all those things that didnt cost me anything but time i want to be sure
So 1st I want to know if theres any rooted person with the mhl hdtv working
Or any rooted user has found a way to make it work
Thank you very very very much
Hi there,
I have a rooted n7100 and using an MHL adapter and it works fine.
I tried several MHL adapter and this is the only adapter to work as far as i know
http://www.amazon.com/Skiva-Samsung...TF8&qid=1372308885&sr=8-1&keywords=mhl+note+2
I have used XNote Rom, Moon Rom, ARHD Rom and they all work
does your adapter have the mini cable that is specifically for the note 2?
When i plug in the cable it shows on my phone "HDMI Output" or something like that.
I know what your saying that the phone charges, it just means that the cable you are using is not for the note 2
I am rooted and use my MHL adapter all the time...no issues. I am running a stock rom.

Samsung mini usb to HDMI adaptor requiring power source

I recently bought a mini usb to HDMI adaptor (model number ET-H10FAU) from eBay and it seems to only work on my note 10.1 2014 edition when I'm using a power source (A mini usb cable to a plugged in ac adaptor.) Is this normal or is there something wrong with the adaptor? I was hoping that I could use the adaptor without such a power source.

I have ordered a 5 pin to 11 pin converter so i can use the MHL adpter I have with the new Note 10.1. I have used this MHL adapter with several phones and all required the power to be plugged it for it to work. The best way around this is with a Miracast receiver to mirror the device wirelessly. I bought the Rocketfish one from Best Buy a couple of months ago when it was on sale for $29.99.

I believe the official Samsung mhl adaptor 2.0 is the only one that can do it without a power source but using hdmi output drains battery so much that it's still better to plug it in

Thanks for the info. So far it's not a deal breaker that I have to use a power source for the adapter. Just wanted to make sure it was normal.

According to Rocketfish's website, and the documentation about the device (It's on the link below) you don't need an external power source since the tablet connects to the device by way of a wireless connection. It does say that the device requires an HDTV with a USB port though, something my old cruddy HDTV I still have in my bedroom does not have (I would be using this device mostly upstairs.). Nevertheless I confirmed that if your tv doesn't have a USB port then you can use an AC adaptor to power the device. This Rocketfish device seems to be perfect. Having to use all these cables to connect my tablet to a tv is a real pain...

The Monoprice MHL adapter I have will not work on any device without external power hooked up to it. If you are using screen mirroring/ miracast for wireless display then you do not need power hooked up. The Rocketfish MiraCast receiver I have does require USB power while plugged into a TV's HDMI slot to function. Most TV's have a usb port for attaching a thumb drive or doing firmware updates and this will power the receiver. Hope this helps.

You can use a usb wall adapter for the usb power. Mine came with the small device, a short HDMI ext. cable, and the microusb power cable in the box. I have used several devices with the Miracast receiver. Be aware that most devices will require you to press the WPS button on the receiver the first time you connect it. I have used a Nexus 10, Nexus 7 (2013), Nvidia Shield, and a HTC Droid DNA with it and all work well. The Shield only required me to use the PIN number shown on the TV screen to connect, all the others required me to press the WPS button on the receiver to connect the first time. After connecting the first time all you have to go into settings on the android device to connect. You can move the receiver to a different TV and still reconnect without pressing the WPS button again. The only time you should have to repair the device is if you factory reset or install a different rom on the android device. Sorry for the long response just trying to give as much information as I know to help with your decision.

Not sure if you were asking about the Rocketfish one specifically...
I bought the OEM MHL 2.0 adapter on Amazon and can confirm that you can indeed connect to HDMI without any power source.
confirmation
I don't need the power cord plugged in on mine but I do need the 5 to 11 pin adapter in the micro usb port of the tablet to get it connected to my tv.
does any one know if this will work?

It should people have said the Note II compatible MHL adapters will work.
I bought one off of ebay
I bought the one below from ebay from seller nj-store and I can connect it with and without the power cord; However, it will it disconnect it by itself every 5-10 minutes regardless of whether or not it has the power connected. Has anyone tried the original Samsung MHL 2.0? If so does it require the power and also does it charge the Note while the power is connected? Cause the one I bought off of ebay does not charge the Note when the power is connected. I seen some original Samsung MHL 2.0 connectors on amazon like for $16.99 but most people think they received the MHL 1.0 because it requires power. Thanks.

I have the original Samsung MHL 2.0. I bought it on Amazon *from* Amazon. I paid more for it, but I wanted to ensure I was getting the genuine product... I've read a few reviews where people were getting the 1.0 (or worse yet, fakes) when buying from 3rd party sellers.
It does not require power to connect my Note II phone or Note 10.1 2014 tablet to a monitor or TV. When I do connect power, it charges both devices.
Thank for letting me know. Do you happen to have the link to the Amazon one? All I find is third parties and fulfilled by amazon. Thanks.
I just went to my Amazon account and clicked on my orders to get you a direct link... Amazon must now be out of stock on them. All I see are 3rd party vendors at the moment.

Can you post the model number of your adapter. I have gotten one suppose to be original and the model number is ET H10FAUWEGWW per the box, but the adapter itself does not have a model number but just a serial number and it says it is made in Korea. It does have this number on it KFC RE SEC ET H10FAUWE which I don't know what it is. The reason for my question is that it works well but it does not charge my note when my power adapter is attached to it. Thanks.

I'm traveling on business at the moment, so I don't have the box on me to confirm. However, I do know that the model number is ET-H10FAUWESTA - not the one you listed. I *can* confirm again that it does charge my devices as I'm currently using them in my hotel room.

Thanks for the reply. I will return the item and wait for Samsung or an authorize retailer to carry them. I have had too much bad luck buying from 3rd parties.

Just wanted to make sure about this adapter being able to charge the Note 2014 edition. I tried it on a galaxy S3 and S4 and it charge both but not the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014. It must need more power I guess cause I was using the Note 2014 edition original charger. Have you tried on the note 2014 edition?
