[Q] Decisions - LG Optimus G (International)

I'm a Verizon customer fixing to switch to Sprints 4G LTE network.
Should I go with the LG Optimus G or the Galaxy S III?

I went back to S3.
I might buy optimus again once there's support from Cyanogen or aokp.

Optimus
The processor is much better and it doesn't feel like a $199/$550 unlocked Fisher-Price toy. Once it has better software, it will be even better, especially since it outpaces every device even on stock firmware. Due to its better hardware, it also has more potential than other devices, so assuming it and its competitors have the same access to AOSP ROMs, it will win hands down. Also, it has a better screen than the GS3. The processor is theoretically 2x better than the S3's, since the S3 uses a very similar Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 chip which is dual core, but the Optimus uses Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8064 S4 Pro Quad Core chip, with a much better GPU (Optimus has the Adreno 320 whereas the S3 has an Adreno 225, so the GPU is 2x better as well http://www.anandtech.com/show/6112/...agon-s4-apq8064adreno-320-performance-preview )
2x the performance, better build, same/similar price, why not go Optimus?

[Q]Bell Mobility offering LG Optimus LTE vs actually handing out LG Nitro HD units??

Just wanted to let everyone know that Bell is stating their LG Optimus LTE is actually the LG P930 Nitro HD (as per the box and the internal OS). Seems to be a bit of confusion on the 'Net. Anyone able to figure this out? Comparison??? Bell vs. AT&T
Doesn't seem to be any sort of a huge difference? Seems basically the same to me other than a few things.
Confusion?
The Optimus LTE is heavier, lacks the extra 2 GB ram, adds the 1700MHz spectrum so it is compatible with WIND, comes with only an 8GB TF SDHC card, no fm radio. some are big differences i would think?
if you go LG.com, it listed Optimus LTE p930 same as Nitro p930.
specs?
If you look, the P930 has different specs than the LTE specs listed all over the 'Net. hence why i started this [Q] to clear up the 2 models conflicting with what Bell is sending out to customers vs. AT&T's Nitro HD P930.
My original [Q] is still unanswered: Bell is handing out the Optimus LTE 4G with boxes and firmware showing it is a P930, yet the specs for the P930 are different from what they are handing out. Which is the right P930??? Bell's or AT&T's?
There ARE differences. see my previous post for them.

Sorry little off topic what the hell happened to your phones lol. some are kia and others exploded.
BOOM?!
Little off topic is true. maybe he's had bad luck or bad units or the zerglings got him?
Going off topic/the record, I have had the worse luck when it comes to phone this year.
-Atrix sorta burst into a tiny flame while charging
- 1st BB drowned, 2nd had faulty keys and the 3rd one permanently froze
- Whatever bugs/defects that were reported with the Sensation, happened to me
- The Torch and Bold basically died and wouldnt charge or turn on.
Thankfully, I have the PEP plan from Best Buy <3. Technically saved me over $3000 haha

Wow, that's interesting. I knew they had differences in software but I didn't think they had some differences in hardware too, considering that they call the Optimus LTE a Nitro HD. Does my Nitro HD have a radio/FM antenna? How does one go about using it?

Optimus LTE and LG Nitro is the same phone! both phone listed as P930 on lg.com !
optimus lacks the extra 2gb ram? on my nitro, it listed Internal storage available space 1.53GB. i not even sure nitro has 4gb to begin with.
so nitro has fm radio? the nitro never comes with headset (att is getting cheap! haha) and there is no FM app preinstalled on Nitro!
Bell vs AT&T
Check out GSMArena. They have both phones listed and they are different. One is manufactured for Bell Canada and one is manufactured for AT&T. "They are different". The AT&T model has a radio with RDS the Bell one has no radio.. The AT&T model has only the one "LTE 700" frequency. the Bell has 700 and 1700. AT&T has 4 gig but Bell only 2 gig. Bell Canada LTE is rated at 75 Mbps, AT&T 21 max. There may be other differences. Check the site for yourself and see.
I am still debating which new phone to purchase and leaning to the LG. My current phone does not have the worlds greatest battery life so not getting a full day out of the LT is not a major concern. And talking for three hours,I don't think so.

you know how to check out gsmarena but not att.com, lg.com or get the Nitro user manual from lg.com?? radio is never mentioned on nitro!
just cus it' on gsmarena, it must be accurate?
att version maxed out at 21mb? is there such a thing as LTE maxed out 21mb? haha
21mb is hspa+
I just did a speedtests on nitro and get 27mb!
not exactly reliable sources...
If your phone doesn't say "AT&T" above the screen, then you're getting the Optimus LTE. Only AT&T has the Nitro HD (name wise), and unless they're gonna bother switching out the glass/digitizer, you didn't get the nitro hd.
New Thread for Optimus LTE??
So based on each carriers website, and the manufacturer admitting they are different models, would it be out of line to start a separate thread for the LTE P930 vs. the Nitro P930 and set the naming convention to differentiate between the two models and XDA support?
Can a Mod give their input on this please??? I am just trying to clarify this before this thread gets bloated with unnecessary posts that will eventually lead to confusion and eventually blurs the line between the two models and set up some sort of clarity for future posts and support...

dude, it doesn't even matter. The Nexus S had i9023, i9020t, and i9020A and they coexist fine. The difference in radio(freq) just means you can't put out roms that changes the baseband.
don't you mean the fact the Optimus LTE has only 2GB of internal memory vs. 4GB of internal memory on the Nitro is also a large difference as well as the lack of the dual LTE frequencies vs the Nitro? or do we need to go further into the other hardware differences (ie: screens etc?)

Nexus vs Galaxy S2 LTE

First off I'm sorry if this is the wrong forum, MODs please move if it is.
Ok so I haven't seen that many reviews on the Rogers version of Samsung galaxy S2 LTE (not the HD from korea). Right now I debating between which one I should pick up. I had a Samsung S1 (i9000m from Bell) and I've always loved it. I love modding phones (ie custom ROM and other stuff). I plan on doing on these as well. The pros for S2 LTE is that: it is LTE compatible, 8mp back 2mp front camera, slight better processor (though I doubt there will be a big difference in performance).
Wheres the Nexus pros is that it is HD and has ICS, slightly better battery life, and of course being nexus, first in line for updates. The screen is also slightly bigger. It just sucks that the LTE from rogers isn't HD like the korean counterpart.
I do live in a LTE enabled zone so I will be able to utilize it (6GB data plan). Any thought on what phone is better? I've went in and tested both out and I honestly can't decide. I love the screen on the nexus but also the camera + LTE on the S2 balances out.

Personally I'd go with the Nexus because the processor is almost up to par with the Exynos in the GSII vs the GSII LTE has a Qualcomm Snapdragon, which for day to day tasks is good, but GPU performance is nowhere near the Mali 400 in the Exynos.
AT&T has the Galaxy S II Skyrocket HD which is pretty much the Korean GSII with a 4-button layout. It sounds exactly like what you're looking for.
Had the at&t galaxy s2 lte and took it back. Qualcomm snapdragon sucks compared to the omap in fhe nexus, but had to use it for lte.
Nexus is so much more fluid day to day i would not look twice at the lte unless you really need limited lte .
Sounds like nexus is still the top. I might just pick it up. Idk something about the shape of the phone just doesn't catch me. Btw is the nexus 4G capable? While looking through the specs, it said its 3G or maybe that website is wrong?

In USA, AT&T and T-Mobile markets HSPA+ as 4G.
LTE is marketed as 4G.
Therefore, the GSM & LTE both supports 4G.
I don't believe it supports Tmo's 42mbps network, however. Or does it?

Yes very true, but considering OP is comparing to a 4G LTE device on AT&T, it is a good idea to make the distinction that the Galaxy Nexus is HSPA+ and the Skyrocket (SGSII LTE) is an LTE phone.

It is only 21mbps. Anything over 14.4mbps T-Mobile calls 4G, however.
T-Mobile only has a couple 42mbps phones I think. The SGSII and the HTC Amaze 4G are the only 2 that come to mind.

[Q] Carrier Version (Telus, Canada) VS GT-i9300

Hi All!
I am thinking of getting a SGS3 very, very soon to replace my iPhone 4S. And I was wondering which is better, the Carrier version of the SGS3 or the international version which is GT-i9300. I know the 9300 has a quad core processor, and the carrier version with Telus had a dual core. But that part is obvious, the problem is RAM, i9300 has 1gb, carrier version had 2gb. This is the troublesome part for me as this is my first android phone (currently have nexus 7 and love it!) and I don't know if it needs 2gb ram...
Also, I've heard JB for SGS3 will be out by end-October, but this is only for the International version I guess, correct? So that update, on the i9300 would come straight from samsung without having to go through carriers, right?
Thanks so much!
Michael
Since you are in Canada, I recommend you to choose the Carrier version over the international version. Although the international version has quad core processor, you can't feel that much difference in speed. However, you will lose LTE connectivity on international SGS3, which you will feel dramatic difference in download speed. In addition, if you enter into a new contract with Telus, you will get this phone a lot cheaper than the international SGS3. I have a Rogers SGS3 and am pretty happy with the process speed and the LTE speed.
Speaking of JB for SGS3, I am not a big fan of Samsung's touchwiz. It is limited to me. I am using CM10 as a daily drive and not having much trouble with it. Plus, it is way faster than the touchwiz.

Ok thanks for the reply. I would only consider the international version for the quad-core which seemed faster when compared on Youtube side-by-side, and for the no contract! I am really starting to hate them!
No question the LTE version. Quad core is of course better than dual core but in real life daily use, you wouldn't even notice the difference.

And again, how would I get it with no contract; I'd have to pay $649 and it would be from Telus, then I'd have to wait a lot more time for JB than the i9300 which is supposed to get it by end Oct... The i9300 I've seen goes for $450 on craigslist - new. Still very unsure, as I have the 4S which doesn't have LTE so I won't really care about LTE that much.

Why doesn't the Tegra3 One Xhave LTE?

So I tried searching why the Tegra3 variant doesn't have LTE and the answers are more like "because the lte radio isn't compatible", I'm wondering why exactly is it not compatible?
Same goes for the SIII, it also has a LTE variant(Dual core) and a quad-core chip without LTE.
Its not like I'm suffering from the lack of LTE, its just curiosity.
Anyone ?

qualcomm LTE radio isn't and qualcomm wasn't helpful to Nvidia to integrate it with Tegra
so Nvidia had to make an LTE radio on its own hence the imminent Tegra 3+
Qualcomm wasn't helpful about it to Nvidia? Wow okay. So I assume the current LTE radios are by qualcomm only then.
Found a link explaining the snapdragon(in the lte variant of one x and s3). It includes everything basically, the processor, radio, etc. The Exynos Quad and Tegra3 don't include a LTE radio.
http://www.ibtimes.co.uk/articles/350403/20120609/samsung-galaxy-s3-exynos4-snapdragons4-variant.htm
From what I've read till now, people seem to be more happy with the dual-core S3 than the dual-core one x. Anyways Tegra3+ ought to fix that, its actually gonna be phone raping everything then lol! LTE, higher clocks, less nm manufacturing?
not most likely it will not be an nm shrink
Today, NVIDIA announced that their Icera 410 LTE modem has been approved for use in tablets and clamshell devices on AT&T’s network. While that does not mention smartphone use yet, this is a step towards LTE and Tegra 3 coming to the States in at least some form. As we have documented plenty of times, NVIDIA has been unable to pair its quad-core mobile processor with LTE because its biggest competitor (Qualcomm) is the only guy making LTE modems at this time and likely does not feel like sharing. With today’s approval, this should bring NVIDIA up to speed in no time (assuming they get the smartphone approval too).

I wonder if they'll do something like what Apple does and offer a subsidised trade-in for T3 HOX to T3+ HOX.
I don't think HTC can afford to, however much I would love to be able to

[Q] LG Optimus G E970: Would you buy one today?

I want to upgrade from my S2 to a new phone. I love the Nexus4, BUT, has no SD slot, and you can not even order one.
So, I was thinking on the Optimus G. Now, my question for all of you with the handset is, would you still buy it today?
One important thing for me is "hackability", meaning, I want to run clear/custom roms on it, as I do not like bloatware.
In that regard, the S2 is wonderful, and we already have JB 4.2.1 running very smoothly.
Why I'm interested on the Optimus G? As far as I understand is VERY similar to the Nexus 4, and so I assume it would be easy to have roms ported from it.
So, what are your thoughts?
As for today, thats the best phone on market, but its mid of January already, so a new/better models will come out really soon.
Thanks Tim4, for your response.
Lets forget that a new one would probably come out soon, would you still buy it considering all the I said, specially the hackability request?
Tough to say as there is currently development towards more solid bootloader and rooting options but who knows how it will all pan out. Same goes with roms, there is not a lot yet so who knows.
I am rooted and have frozen/uninstalled the apps that I don't want on the device so for me this is good enough. The phone itself is fantastic and I'm very pleased with it, even without JB. But yes, news phones like s4 and xperia z will give the g a run for it if not beat it outright, but regardless of that this phone is a beast.
Sent from my LG-E973 using xda app-developers app
Well, to put you in context, I went and bought a Razr MAXX. In brief, very poor roms support, so I sold it after 2 days.
There are too many versions for Optimus G, US has E970, Canadian has 971,973, Korean has their version, also the international version E975 might gonna come out soon. ROM development might takes longer I think. At least we gotta wait until LG release the 4.1.2 JB in order to have more JB ROMs
About the phone. I had the S II too, I loved it. I think Optimus G has even better design, and of course more powerful.
Running great on CM10.1, I believe it will be even better when LG comes out the JB source.
So, if you likes the phone, how it looks, then go for it.

I want the AT&T version E970, cause it is compatible with my country 3G bands, unless all have the same bands, or are quad band or something, or unless there is a problem with the E970 one.
You coming from the S2, do you think his battery last longer? How much longer? I'm asking cause I realized that the battery is non removable, and I'm always about 2 to 4 hours short on the S2.
Thanks!
The E973 already has a near perfect CyanogenMod 10.1 port, AOKP 4.2.1 build and of course an unlocked boot loader and can be rooted. So I'm pretty happy with this, especially since the big two are already on board. Team Nocturnal is also working on this phone.

I would say around 30-40% more.

Make the move bro! I went from the S2 to the AT&T Optimus G, originally i was going to upgrade to the overrated S3 or wait on the S4(but found out rumors saying screen size is 4.99inch which is too big and rocking Exynos Octa Core which i doubt we'd need and delay of how long USA would get a version) But a nice rep from AT&T store recommended the OG, and i have to say is i am blown away with the looks and performance of the device. The only deal breaker is the lack of accessories like an OEM car dock and non-removable but sooner or later everyone will transistion to non removable battery. Yes the LGOG is lacking ROM Dev, but i know that this is a fairly new device, give it a couple weeks to a few months and development will go crazy!
I never looked back, yes the S2 was a slamming device even up to now, but i needed to update and the OG is good enough rocking the first Quad Core CPU with LTE bands
This phone is simply amazing. Screen is beautiful, absolutely no lags on heavy multitasking, good battery, lte.. Even on mostly stock rom, simply the best phone to get into my hands. The screen, man.. The screen And the fluidity.. - - It is a joy to use, still looks like a (sexy, classy, sleek) phone compared to the galaxy note 2's size, exemple.
Did I mention the amazing screen, and the fluidity of animations + browsing?

I like the phone very much, but the lack of root/roms makes me very nervous
I just bought 2 today. They are buy one get one free at sprint.
I'm guessing the pro is coming very soon.
