AOSP Browser 4.2 - Nexus 4 Themes and Apps

Anybody less than enchanted by Chrome in its current state? Well, now that the Nexus 4 has been rooted you can install AOSP browser, which is lovely and smooth The apk was extracted from a Nexus 7 AOSP 4.2 build, but it should work on the N4 as well.
Benefits = faster benchmarks and smoother scrolling.
> Must be rooted.
> Copy the browser.apk into the system/app folder
> With a root file explorer change the file permissions of the browser.apk to -rw-rw-r (you will see this represented as 664) If you don't do this, it won't install.
> You must rename the BrowserProviderProxy.apk & BrowserProviderProxy.odex otherwise the browser will force close, just add a 1 to the name e.g. 1BrowserProviderProxy.apk1 Do not delete them, if you still want to OTA update Android. Android checks for any changes to the system/app folder before performing an OTA, so you will have to delete the browser.apk and rename the two file back to stock, when it is OTA time.

Brilliant and got that working but no bookmark sync?

Does this one have the private browsing page too where there is no history? Incognito I think it's called. The browser apk I have does not have it. Also can some one upload the browser proxy apk and odex file for me I deleted mine like an ass. And I agree chrome blows!

Quite a bit slower than my stock Nexus 7 with the same ASOP browser 4.2, and even a blind crack-addicted donkey knows that the S4 Pro is more powerful than Tegra 3:laugh:
Your result 1801 ms (Nexus 4)
My Result 1443 ms (Nexus 7)
At the end of the day, Sunspider is an outdated benchmark and page load times and HTML 5 compliance are more important, but it is strange that the same SoC minus 2 cores in Windows Phone 8 can achieve sub 1000ms scores, it seems that Qualcomm have a lot of room to optimize their Javascript libraries for Jelly Bean 4.2.

Guess I MUST root my phone now!

Thanks for keeping the thread on track, I though my counterpoints were quite good (ego!) It is shame I can't see them, such is price for maintaining a healthy forum.
It would be good to have a sticky on XDA, where a truely knowledgeable developer or superuser could debunk a few of the common misconceptions about Android / Davlik / Java and its performance vs other platforms, it would make a good read, and set a bar for future Android vs iOS comparisons.

Is it not possible for someone just to put this up on Google Play as an app for everyone to download? I know someone has done so for the 4.2 keyboard with gesture typing. Just thinking if the same cant be done for this.
Thanks.

I too would like this, this is the first android phone that i dont plan on rooting. I have only rooted to correct certains flaws in other phones (HTC desire not having enough internal memory ) or to to be on latest version of android and get rid of crappy skins (LG o2x, GS2,GS3)
However as certains apps now refuse access with root access, sky go (when its available for jellybean) and barclays banking apps, i would be missing out too much by rooting just for the sake of it, since i will have latest version of stock android as soon as anybody.
However i love the AOSP browser and thus would love to be able to use it without rooting, if anybody knows of a way?

Slow and buggy. I'm sure it'll get better but I'm not sure it'll ever be better than Google's effort, at least it'll create a bit of competition.

[Q] Chrome Beta

Chrome Beta is released for ICS. I just downloaded from the market. Any pro and cons compared to the default browser?
Pros
Faster than default browser
Nice transitions
Easy tab management
Cons
No Arabic/Hebrew support (awkward)
no flash
Pretty much the same with visual enhancements
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I find they made the zooming a lot better than the stock browser. It has more of a mobile safari feel to it which I think is a good thing. Also, I love the fact that you can get to the open tabs on your desktop chrome.
There are missing things such as the quick control and the URL bar doesn't go away so you can't have full screen. I think it is also missing the feature to request the desktop version of a page also.

The no flash is defiantly a deal breaker for me, but hey, remember it is free and still in beta!
Also there is no way to change the UAString which means it will always be stuck in "Mobile" until/if they add the ability to change it (All websites will come up in mobile view).
Great info here. I was not aware of the lack of flash, but everyting else seems ok. Since it is just Beta, I am hoping for some great improvements. Browsing is WAY faster!
Cons:
- no flash... Ever
- pages run as mobile with no option to switch to desktop
- no accessibility options ... Can't run pages with inverted Colours
- runs as a service, eating up precious ram
- no chrome extensions - vs. Firefox mobile with plugins, Chrome is pathetic
I have no idea why anyone would use this as a primary browser, considering the stock browser is superior is almost every way.
It is just a Beta release.....

Beta means that you can't complain for it missing something.
Google likes to "release early and iterate quickly". Which means a lot of things come out as Beta.
Immediately after getting ICS on my TF101, I installed Chrome Beta, it is nice, but as others have already said:
Pro:
- bookmark sync, i just LIKE IT, works same as desktop chrome: start typing url and it will autocomplete from your bookmarks... missed it on old browser.
Con:
- No arabic support (while default browser does support arabic)
- No flash, which i don't need much, i have it disabled on default Browser.
will it ever support extensions? that will be great

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
I see people didnt bring up the fact that you cant get rid of (at the very least) the status bar like you can with the Google Labs option in the stock ICS browser. Id use Chrome beta every second I was online with my SGN if I could "maximize" the screen.

I'm not questioning features, i'm questioning your expectations of a BETA product and your understanding of what BETA means. It seems to me that you're expecting this to be some magical browser from day one, which it is certainly not - that's why it's a damn BETA!
You guys are not aware of this pro:
It stops redirecting websites, just like desktop browsers. Opera, Dolphin, Firefox, or stock browser doesn't have this.
For me, this is the biggest plus.
When you email yourself or someone else a page using Chrome on your GN? Does it leave the subject blank? It's driving me nuts!

[Q] Replacing Sense MMS.APK

Hi all,
My phone is rooted. Not a fan of the Sense 4.0 SMS/MMS app. I know I can download the default ICS 4.0.3 MMS.apk from the market.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.concentriclivers.mms.com.android.mms
When I go to install it, it says it will overwrite the existing application. Before I get reckless...
Couple questions:
- Why is there no existing mms.apk in /system/app ? I can't find it. Does HTC call it something different or...?
- How do I backup the current Sense version in case I screw this up and need to restore it?
- Is the Sense one tightly integrated into the rest of Sense? Will it break other apps, widgets...?
So far I got this working.
1. installed stock ICS SMS from market
2. backed up and removed /system/app/Message+CRC_1.apk
3. rebooted phone
Haven't tested MMS nor any sense features that might bomb (I hope not)
I'll update thread if there are any problems and I need to roll this back
Any Update
Hey. Just wondering if you had any update on how this worked? Everything still fine? I want to go to the ICS MMS app, cause the sense one isn't as nice.

I use it daily, the SMS app works perfectly. Love this change.
The HTC SMS widgets that display your messages on your desktop may not work (don't think mine do) but this is easily remedied by just finding other widgets in the market etc. Just don't put the default HTC ones on your desktop.
Won't uninstalling the app just automatically put stock sense app back in there?

No. The stock ICS app does not play nice with the stock Sense app, you can't have them both on the phone at the same time. Its not like when you install GOSMS or something.
I had to actually delete the sense app right off the phone completely for it to work properly. Otherwise I had strange problems such as messages being sent twice.
Since I physically deleted the sense app there is no going back without re-installing the sense APK.
Did you save the stock apk? No joke one of my hesitations is the messaging app. If I can switch to stock ICS for messaging I may be ordering mine yet tonight.

Honestly no why would i? I updated this post to be kind but I'm not building something here, this was for my own use and it works perfectly. I'd that's not what you're looking to hear, find another thread. I won't lose sleep at night.
As for backing up the original sense app, yes I did see step 2 above. I used adb for this just pull the file.
Again this works perfectly If anyone cares to try it. nothin to lose, if you don't like it just put the sense file back and reboot.
I installed both the calendar and the sms app today and they seem to work fine. Haven't tried mms. Haven't uninstalled anything yet, will see if I run into trouble. Thanks for posting readk, been searching for this but didn't find it until now
EDIT: Ran into problems immediately of course where pressing the Messaging app launched the HTC Messages app. Following your instructions for backup and removal seems to have done the trick though. Next step will be to do the same for the calendar

I tried all the tricks that usually work when installing AOSP browsers, renaming the browserodex file, ensuring permissions are set 0660 or 0664. I even tried using 0777, renamed the apk to 'browser.apk' nothing worked, looks like we must wait for a AOSP 4.2 ROM to be released, and extract the apk from there. The stock GNEX browser must have some device specific libraries, that fubar the install on the N7, of course if I'm being dense and there is an easy workaround, please let me know
Request over, I now have the 4.2 AOSP browser, pulled from a Nexus 7 build. It installed OK, not really much difference over the 4.1.1 AOSP browser, but still faster and smoother than Chrome Android.

In terms of HTML 5 performance
AOSP 4.2 Browser = 298 points & 3 Bonus points
Chrome Android v18 = 390 points & 11 Bonus points
Sunspider:
AOSP 4.2 = 1415 ms
Chrome Android v18 = 1661 ms
So Chrome has its strong points, but is much slower at javascript and is laggy on certain sites, as I outlined in another thread.

I'm on stock, rooted 4.2, the apk is from a 4.2 AOSP build. If you search the forums there is a good guide on how to side-load AOSP browser, but these are the main steps you need to take.

How the hell can an AOSP browser that is currently being pushed to stable repos by Google lag behind so many browsers in terms of html5 support?
Just look at the other mobile browsers:

iOS6: 386
Windows Phone 8 IE 10: 320

Google is busy upstreaming / unforking Chrome Android into the Chromium open source code, which will boost HTML 5 compliance. I guesstimate this will be completed sometime in Q1 2013, according to some hints in the Chromium logs, pointing to milestone 25 as the completion target, which if Google maintain their 6-week release cycle will drop in Jan / Feb 2013.
IE 10 on WP8 is a BS browser it has been 'tuned' to achieve good sunspider scores, which is a pretty lame test nowadays, but sucks in all other javascript benchmarks

This is just an early alpha, a test to see if the frameworks will run correctly.
The nav-keys are there in-case HW keys are not functional so feedback can still be given and they can be disabled by removing:
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
in build.prop, this text entry turns the on-screen softkeys on and removing it will disable them
Edit: the next version-up will be far more 'complete' this was just built today on a CM10.1 base that was just built today :x

I do have all the other recommendations in FAQ working, including root, etc.

Go to this page. Create an account to allow download of the Google apps installer. Make sure you enable all of the settings including ok to adding Google framework. After doing all of this you will see a slew of Google downloads including the playstore app. My mistake was locating an apk file and installing standalone. That will not work. I uninstalled that APK and used the link I show. Then it works

I do have all the other recommendations in FAQ working, including root, etc.
FIXED: http://en.miui.com/thread-3998-1-1.html
Go to this page. Create an account to allow download of the Google apps installer. Make sure you enable all of the settings including ok to adding Google framework. After doing all of this you will see a slew of Google downloads including the playstore app. My mistake was locating an apk file and installing standalone. That will not work. I uninstalled that APK and used the link I show. Then it works

I am an old time MIUI user back in my Nexus One days when I left IPhone for my first Android. Coolest MIUI stuff is the ultimate amount of themes out there. It does take a lot of extra effort in customizing the way you like a setup, but I find MIUI so refreshing compared to the typical stuff available. I actually find this really responsive including consistent 32Mps download speeds speedtest.net in my home here in Las Vegas. To bad more developers here aren't into working with MIUI. Even though it's still using 4.2.x, everything I need works, including Samsung WatchOn that was posted here on another ROM as a standalone recovery installation with a Kit Kat 4.4.x ROM.
Have you tried the full latest MIUI download for the I9505. Been trying to download that for the last three days. REALLY slow site
Miss the days when there were those English packs that pretty much weeded a lot of the Chinese stuff out, but I can live with that too :good:
Edit: Just saw your join date here same as me...Jan 2010 and you also had the Nexus One. Probably ran into some time or another back in those olden days if I did a search here......
PPS...not much traffic so I am taking a little libery in thread drift too

OK, a new update is coming tomorrow.
Now that I understand this phone a bit more I can do a more stable version with the next revision.
I'm going to also include the software camera that comes with Xiaomi phones as well, I'll need feedback on it so I'm going to put it in another flashable zip independent of the download link for MIUI.
Also 4.2.2 is cool and all that but I've been prepping a 4.4 base for MIUI v6 as well and working on a solution for OTA update as well.

I am totally sold on going back to MIUI. I forgot how much custom stuff was possible. So include me. More than happy to test stuff too before posting if you want help. Spent three days trying to download from the MIUI world site the slighter later, but bloated version which I assume would have been compatible. I9505. But failed at installing in recovery. I have one app that refuses to work correctly with 4.3 or 4.4 updates, but works perfectly under 4.2, but I can live with updates to newer. I basically have to delete cache files everytime before starting the app. Annoying, but do-able.
PS...what local folder are themes that are downloaded stored in. I couldn't get a .mtz file to install when I manually went on the MIUI world site. Using the THEME app on the phone works. Just have to get past the Chinese texts to figure out how to individually apply separate items such as lock screens etc.
EDIT: The prior MIUI theme installers allowed to pick and choose what aspects of a theme you wanted to install. Could not see how to do this currently, unless I'm missing something.
Keep up the good work...thanks!!!

Edit build.prop to kill the Nav bar. It's posted in the thread.
