[Q] T-889, N7100, or N7105 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I'd really to get on T-Mobile's prepaid plans or Solavei and I'm not sure which device would be the smartest to purchase. I live in Portland, OR if that helps. It seems like they all offer upsides but I'd be willing to spend a bit more for the device that will be the most future proof (if that's possible).

I'm on a Tmo value plan, and where I'm at, there is almost no Magenta coverage. I got the T889 for the WiFi calling and maybe, just maybe, for the LTE. When and if Tmo ever brings real 4G to our area, I'll already be running the right device.

The T-Mobile version seems to be the one to go with considering the pentaband 3G radio hardware. The inclusion of the LTE radio is also a big plus. None of the other Note2 models work on everyone's 3G like the Note2 does.

Keep in mind if you purchase the n7100 international it won't actually work on T-Mobile's HSPA+ network and instead you will be treated to its 200ish kbps speeds, and on a super phone like the Note 2 that's just sad. :crying: Take it from someone who's used the International Edition Note1 on their prepaid for a few months now...it SUCKED! I'm now on their Value plan with the GN2 and the phone and the download speeds are exceptional!
Hope this helps!

I am using the tmobile version on solavei and love it. Plus you wont have to unlock the phone if you go with Solavei.

Yeh, the T-Mobile version has all the right hardware for the USA. Not only does it include the 1700 MHz band needed for current hi-speed T-Mo 3G in most places, and LTE capability that should work on T-Mo and ATT when ready, but it's 42Mbps capable, too. The N7100 has none of that. The N7105 has 42Mbps but still no 1700 MHz, and the LTE probably won't work in the US.
BTW, T-Mo is upgrading towers to provide hi-speed 3G via 1900 MHz band, which the N7100/05 support, but it's not widely available yet.
Now let's just hope CyanogeMod comes to the T-Mo Note II, since the N7100 is officially supported. That would make it THE best cellphone in the world IMO.

Agreed! That's what I'm chomping at the bit for right now-some CM LOVE! This is by far the most function packed stock software, but it's over-bloated IMO. I want speed and infinite customizations!
This conversation brings up a good point though. Has anyone found a good source for the differences of the models and what will or won't work on all three of them i.e. n7100, n7105, and the T889? It was easy with the first Note because it was your either qualcomm or exynos, but now all Note 2's are Exynos. I can imagine many bricks happening if there are major unknown hardware differences.

Yeah, that would be great. Im looking for a site where I can see if the n7100 is the same in the outside (housing) as t889.
Since I know that the front crystal is the same for all three models, att, international and tmo. Also that the plastic back door (battery door) is the same on the att and the tmo models. Not yet sure if the n7100 also because I havent opened one of does yet (n7100), the other two are the same in plastic housing too. Thats great at time of replacing parts.

Ok more info!
The i317 t889 n7100 have same housings.
ALSO
In the link I provided before you can see that there are only two real differences between them:
Cellular Networks:
TMobile t889 GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 850/900/1700/1900/2100
N7100 GSM 850/900/1800/1900, UMTS 850/900/1900/2100
Maximum Speed Download: t889 (42 Mbps) N7100 (21 Mbps)

Get a t889. Im using tmobile pre paid plan on my note 2 and my wife is running solavei on hers. Everything runs fine and speeds are fine. I try to compared using both my tmobile and solavei on a unlock n7105 and n7100 and speeds arent that great. Feels like im running on edge for some reason.

You need umts band 1700 to run tmobile 4g. So yes you where on edge on the n7000 since the only model with band 1700 is the t889

Nights SPIDER is correct, but I'm going to clarify a bit in case anyone else stumbles across this in the future.
The other two models will only get T-Mobile 3G speeds when in a refarmed area that T-Mobile has 1900MHz bands. Most of the country is still rocking the 1700MHz band, so those two models won't work at all on it and only get EDGE speeds.

Flash a T-mobile modem in the SG3 international

Or even flash it in At&T SG3. Samsung said the hardware are the same and have all the frequencies. i believe it might not be advertised this way from the carriers. Just thinking out loud.
Sorry i posted in the wrong section. Admin please move to Q&A
sorry again
Eh, I dont think so. Not at first anyway... after some hackery it might be possible.
The US versions are all the same.
The International version is very different.
It will never work.
I have yet to get 5 bars on my SGS3. Kinda odd.
Not a good idea as someone already stated they're different. I did that once by accident with the original galaxy s. Flashed the canadian firmware for the US version of the phone and ended up bricking it. Not even a jig bought it back to life.
It should work with the at&t and t-mobile sgs3 just like with the skyrocket and t-mobile's sgs2

The Skyrocket forums.. the AT&T Note also works because it also has the same SoC. The international version will never work with AWS though.

It hasn't been tested yet on the S3. And while it works on the Note, it is far from optimal. I have not read since the early stages but it would freeze and get awful battery life on T-Mobile.

The US [GSM] models, ok. The international model, 100% no.
And as I understood, the T-Mobile version is pentaband out of the box (it will get AT&T 3G/4G 1900 MHz) because T-Mobile is moving to that frequency. So if anything, get the T-Mobile one and use it on AT&T if you don't care about LTE.

The Note had abysmal battery life from what I read. Just wait for someone to do it (they will) so you don't have to possibly return whichever one you buy.

Well the At&T Galaxy Note is what inspired me to think it might be doable!! The At&T Note i have is working fine with Simple Mobile and picking up 4g all the way. the battery sucks anyways even with the At&T modem. Also, you guys should note that stationed in Kuwait and im using the At&T Note with T-mobile modem overseas and still working great. Yes i have 3G as they dont have 4G here. they funny thing is that i still shows 4G and run about 19Mbps in most places.
I can get the international SGIII in Kuwait for $250 16G unlocked (NICE RIGHT?) but when im home i use the Simple mobile network(T-mobile).
you can call it greed but i want to have 2GB RAM, LTE, T-mobile 4G and the ablity to use every network in the world
I hope someone can make this happen
The reason it worked with the AT&T Note is because the T-Mobile S2 used the same SoC (Snapdragons S3). The US Galaxy S3's have Snapdragon S4's, the International has an Exynos 4412. The SoC's (CPU, RAM, Radios, DAC) are COMPLETELY different. It will NOT work. It's not software magic that got the Note to work. It's the fact that it supported the 1700 MHz frequency. The Exynos SoC's radio doesn't. You'll end up bricking the phone and requiring a JTAG.

Can you please confirm this, if I get the T-mobile version, and get it unlocked and use my existing AT&T sim on it, it will get 3G/4G speeds?. Would the international version also not give the same?. 4G speeds with AT&T?.
Thanks.

I'm using the i9300 (International) on Straight Talk AT&T, which runs on AT&T's base network, and I get full HSPA+ (of course, no LTE). The i9300 runs on AT&T's bands, so if you used it on T-Mobile you'd only get EDGE (for now, because they're moving their network onto the same frequency as AT&T). If the T-Mobile version is indeed pentaband as I suspect, then unlocking it and using it on AT&T will give you the same data speeds as using the international version on AT&T.

[solved.. won't work] T-Mobile 3G/4G on AT&T SGH-I747

I've got an unlocked AT&T Galaxy SIII, and I only get Edge for my data connection. Do I need to flash a T-Mobile radio? APN settings look okay, as far as I can see.
Also, can I flash a T-Mobile ROM and use Wifi calling, or is that asking too much?
I searched and couldn't find anyone asking these questions in the Q&A forum....
there are already like 3 threads below this one concerning the 3g/4g topic on a att sg3 working on tmobile. No it will not work because att sg3 does not support the aws tmobile frequencies. you will only be able to get edge. NOW if it were a tmobile sg3 on att then it would work.
All the threads I could find in this form on my search went the other way: T-Mo phone on AT&T.
Does anyone actually know whether a T-Mobile modem on an AT&T phone would work or not? I looked at the main board in my phone, and it's labelled with both SGH-I747 and SGH-T999, which makes me think the internals are fully identical.
I'd like to know this too! I also have an AT&T Galaxy SIII and was seriously considering moving to T-Mobile because of the new unlimited data plan they were going to start offering on 9/5. I had also looked through this forum, and could only find questions of the situation the other way around, T-Mob GSIII phone on AT&T network.
Basically, was wondering:
- is there a hardware limitation that APN settings and/or installing a new modem will not get me good data speeds?
- would I need to burn a new modem?
- I'm assuming at minimum I'd need new APN settings, and am assuming T-Mobile would be able to help with that. Right?
Thanks, really interested in being able to do this!

Where did you see that the boards were labelled the same?
AFAIK, the radio's are different and flashing a T-mobile modem could possibly brick your device. It would be much easier to buy a T999 and use it on T-Mobile (it'll even work on AT&T 3G if you want to switch back, no LTE though).
The SoCs are different. Flashing a T-Mobile modem will not give you T-Mobile HSPA.
Looks like I didn't take any pictures of that side of the phone while I had it open, and I'm not eager to pop it open again. It definitely listed both models on the PCB. If I'm remembering correctly, it's on the same side as the SIM and SD card slots, so it's just matter of removing the back plate to see it, no more disassembly than that.

Do you have part numbers for the two? According to wikipedia, they are the same Snapdragon S4 MSM8960. I just find it hard to believe that they would be different, though if they have the same pinout, that would explain the markings on my PCB.
This has been rehashed countless times. They are not the same phone. If the phones were the same, people would not be in here asking if they were the same. The MSM8960 comes in more than one flavor, with different modem parts. Yes, the CPU's are the same, but the MODEMS ARE DIFFERENT. It is an S4 Qualcomm part that comes in many different configurations. Instead of just reading until you get to some information that reinforces your preconceived notion, try reading a little further into the links at the bottom of the page and elsewhere. Seriously, if you really really don't think that Qualcomm would make different versions of the same chip, or configure them differently for the hundreds of different customer requirements, then fine, don't believe me, but it defies logic. Sorry about being an ass.

Thanks for the useful response. For those looking for even more detail, here's a link: http://www.qualcomm.com/sites/default/files/common/snapdragon-specs-06.07.12.pdf
According to that the MSM8960 (chip in I747?) has a "World Mode" modem, while the MSM8260a has a UMTS modem.
Edit: Ah, and I see both of you have answered this question before, which I would have found if I searched on MSM8260a. The threads have been dead for over a week, so I'm not surprised I missed them, but thanks for answering the same questions again.

T-Mobile uses a frequency for their 3g and 4g network that only T-Mobile branded phones have. Any other GSM phone will never get 3g or 4g on T-Mobile network unless it supports the T-Mobile band, which I believe is 1700MHz. It's limited by hardware. Nothing you can do to the phone will give you the 3g/4g you have to have a T-Mobile branded device.

Not completely true. Since The Galaxy SII and the Galaxy Note (AT&T) have software radios, you can flash a radio from the TMO GSII and get 4G on TMO. I was running mine and many customers of mine like that for months until i switched phones.

This is NOT TRUE, please be careful when making such "absolute" statements -- I just got a ATT i747 from craigslist, and it DOES work with the $30 Walmart plan - on 4G and LTE (depending on location).
The TRUE ANSWER IS -- IT DEPENDS -- if you live in an area that was recently upgraded to LTE (in my area was 02/13), you can get LTE/4G since t-mobile added support for it on 700 MHz (band 4) AWS (unverified - source: youtube video named "Tmobile 4G on att i747 gs3 data fix". Anyway, I DO get 4G/LTE, I guess I was lucky

[Q] Which version to buy for T-mobile T-zones Users?

Hi - I have the T-mobile U.S. T-zones grandfathered plan, which phone version can I buy to get 3G speeds on that data plan?
I know Note 2 has several models. Someone told me I could use the AT&T US model if I live in a area that has been refarmed (I live in Orlando, FL).
Someone then told me I should get the Canadian model but I am having a hard time finding a site that sells the Canadian model from Wind/Videotron/Mobilicity.
Thanks
Start paying for your internet like the rest of us
Nah, just kidding. But the last time I checked on the whole "smartphones with T-zones" thing was a few years ago-.at that point, it worked with any phone that didn't need a special apn(like danger or rim devices). If that still holds true, it won't matter which model of note 2 you get. Good luck.
actually I think the frequency 1700 available for T-mobile is only available on the Canadian Wind/Videotron/Mobilicity.
The U.S. AT&T device based on what I read here works if you are in T-mobile area that is reframed.

Hi - how I can tell if my area is refarmed, my zip is 32828. Also, will it then stay that way, I mean will T-mobile ever change the refarmed area?
Basically am inquiring if I get the 7100 model will it be useless for me with T-zones in like a few months, etc.

I'd just get a brand new international Note 2 off eBay. I got my first one for $575 under their daily deals. Check amazon as well.

But I would need to know if my area zip 32828 will be fine in getting 3G, also is refarmed a temp config or will they switch.

Have Note 2, considering switching from AT&T to T-Mobile. Some questions...

As the title says I have some questions:
What are the speed differences between AT&T's net work and T-Mobile's? I've read that T-Mobile doesn't have LE yet but it is coming in the near future.
Will my AT&T Note 2 be able to take advantage of T-Mobile's high speed network or do I need to switch to the T-Mobile verions? From what I've read it seems the AT&T one has all the radios to cover all the frequencies that T-Mobile uses so I should be good to go with the phone I have now but some confirmation would be nice.
Thanks.
T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is much faster than AT&T's. Of course there are examples where it isn't, but it's notably faster in most every market.
The AT&T version of the Note 2 only gets EDGE on T-Mobile. You want the T-Mobile T-889, unlocked, to have a true pentaband (with LTE) Note 2.

If I remember right, the att version can get hspa+21, while the tmobile version can go hspa+42.

The T-mobile version is also LTE ready when T-mobile rolls out there LTE network this year we will get an update for our T-mobile Note 2's that will enable the LTE radio.
I do feel that hspa is fast enough though. When I'm in a good coverage area, I get about 17 mbps down and 2 mbps up. I feel that is more then enough bandwidth.
So either way 4G or 4G LTE that they are slowly rolling out. I'm happy with T-mobile's network speeds.

The truth is it really differs all over. It depends who has better coverage in your area. Because what you're looking at from the carriers specs, that is max speeds your looking at. For example I have tmobile. The max speed I could get with hspa+42 is 42 mb download speed. But in reality I only get about 14-20 average. But my brother in law who lives right next door has at&t and he only gets around 5-10 averages. You should be able to find some kind of map from one carrier or the other that will give you an idea of who is going to give you the best coverage. Or find 2 of your friends who are in the same area 1 with tmo and 1 with at&t and ask them to run speed test with their phones.

Search "AWS MOD" to make your ATT note 2 i317 compatible with Tmobile 4G network.
My i317 gets about 14Mbps on Tmobile

Yeah, I've already decied to switch to T-Mobile this weekend. I did the AWS mod. Does that mean I'll have the LTE enabled when they roll it out or will I still only have HSPA speed? From the hardware specs on Wikipedia it looks like the AT&T version has all the radio bands that the T-Mobile one does.

Unlocked AT&T Note 2 On T-Mobile?

All I'd need to do is just flash at&t device specific roms right? I shouldn't need to flash flash t-mobile modems would I?

you will be able to make phone calls and text people no problem.
the only problem you will have is going to be data connectivity and data speeds because the NOTE2 for AT&T is meant to be used with AT&T LTE.
T mobile's main data band is 1700 which the AT&T phones usually do not have.
To answer your baseband or modem question I believe this thread does not have a modem or baseband for T mobile. You might have luck looking over at their forums, I am not sure.
Good luck to you sir.

Hrmm the good news is T-Mobile told me they'd have LTE Coverage in April. I wonder if that'll change anything then for me?
I have a Dell Streak 5 on T-Mobile, don't have any problems.

The Dell Streak 5 is like the Nexus 4 it has all the HSPA bands. The LTE band for T mobile most likely will be different from AT&T. You can try to unlock it and compare the coverage and speed to your dell streak. I had a dell streak. Great phone!! sold it about a month ago for like 180 bucks.
My suggestion if the unlocked AT&T Note 2 isnt working properly and you want to stay with T MOBILE I would sell it and get the international version.
What you need to is search for how to "enable aws" and you will have 4g working on your device.

Technically no T-Mo customer has LTE yet, until April or so I've been told.
Unless you can predict the future or something, then no one knows for sure.

LoL! I was getting ready to say that.
All I can do is keep my fingers crossed and hope T-Mo uses the same freq as AT&T's LTE...
Then again given the circumstances of T-Mobile shortly taking over MetroPCS for their LTE coverage, they may have a larger or wider band of LTE frequency ranges.
_
I will apparently have T-Mo's 42MBPS HSPA+ as opposed to AT&T's 21MBPS HSPA+
_
Then again, that was my whole intentions of getting an AT&T Note 2 as to T-Mo's Note 2, I've been told there's no LTE Support for the T-Mobile version, but with AT&T I'd have more likely of a chance at having LTE support, once it's available... I still don't to this day don't get why T-Mobile released a crippled down version knowing that they'd have LTE in the near future.
I just didn't know it wouldn't work right away straight outta the box.

Have they specified when they would deploy the network? Even if they did they would start in few markets and by the time there is enough coverage the Note 3 will be out

Nope they didn't specify anything with me just said the line "We'll have LTE in April" I'm going to the corperate office tomorrow or friday to get my micro sim and will ask them more about it then, if they know anything else. See if I need an lte micro sim or what and all that.

T-Mobile’s Chief Technology Officer Neville Ray discussed his company’s LTE rollout last month at CES. T-Mobile has said it plans to launch LTE for 100 million pops by mid-year, with 200 million covered by the end of 2013. Las Vegas is expected to be T-Mobile’s first LTE city. T-Mobile operates GSM on 1900 MHz (PCS) in the US and puts HSPA (and LTE) on the AWS band (1.7/2.1 GHz).

First you need to unlock it. Start here:

Keep in mind that you need to be on the 4.1.1 firmware in order for that unlock to work...

Well isnt that some useful info! Thanks for the unlock info I will be downgrading lol....Im with the guy above though did you have to flash a tmobile modem? Im running jedi rom for t889 on my i317 but was curious about flashing the modem and stuff.
What did you guys do to get tmobile 3g,4g and lte fully working on the i317? I have installed the jedi rom and all is working fine besides I have edge...So hopefully I can get a straight forward answer. My eyes are sore from reading.
And QPST is not working for me for QCN at all my phone is on com5 but when I go to get qcn says no phone connected....
