[Mod] Change Home button wake mode - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

Based on this awesome mod for the S3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836758
For the Note 2 (I can only vouch for the Sprint version), you need to edit a different file.
1. Mount as R/W and open /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl.
2. Scroll to the line that says:
"key 172 HOME WAKE"
3a. Now if you want to make it so the Home button never wakes the phone, delete everything after the 2 so it looks like this:
"key 172"
OR
3b. Alternatively, you can change "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED" in step #2 if you use the stock lock screen and want your home button *NOT* to send you back to the home screen when you use it to wake. In my opinion Samsung should have defaulted it to WAKE_DROPPED in the first place. For what it's worth, WAKE_DROPPED doesn't seem to have any effect on WidgetLocker. If you use WidgetLocker, I suggest just doing step 3a instead.
4. Save it, lock the filesystem, and reboot.

Thank you worked perfectly. Home button returning home was very annoying! ... kinda ironic

Depends what lock screen app you're using. If you're using stock, you can do as my post said and replace "WAKE" with "WAKE_DROPPED" and it will show the last app used.

I have the pin lockscreen but it only comes on every 30 mins of no usage. Otherwise the screen turns on immediately with no lockscreen. I playing with this and just cant get the home button to work like it did in ice cream sandwich and just power on the device when the syatem is off. I hate how it now powers on the device, closes your last app and takes you home. I know i can just hit power but that is not convenient for how i use my phone.

Thanks for sharing this.
When I look at my file, it seems like keys 115 & 114, volume up and volume down, respectively, also has "WAKE" assigned to them. However, the volume buttons do not wake the phone. Why?
For clarification, if I wanted to keep the home button from waking the phone, I would edit the line to read key "key 172"?
I wonder if I can simply remove or comment out the line? (using ";")
Edit: Adding a ";" in front of the line indeed disables the line. My home key no longer wakes the phone.
I'm still curious about 115 and 114, why are they assigned as wake but do not wake the phone?

It works, but at the cost of the Home button not turning on the phone. I'm looking for an option where the Home button still wakes the device but goes to the last app prior to the phone going into sleep mode. Any thoughts?

When I first did this I used ES File Explorer to make the edits. It didn't work so I went back to change it back and even though I went back to the default settings the Home button does not turn on the device. So, I downloaded Root Explorer thinking that would help. The strange thing is when I go into the gpio-keys.kl file to edit, it is completely blank. So, I added each line manually and then hit save and exit. But, when I go back into it, it is blank again. I assume that all of this has something to do with the home button not turning on the phone. So, what am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

I have the same problem. I use Widget Locker and would like to know how I can get the home button to simply wake up the device without it taking me to the home screen and bypassing my lock screen.
Edit: 3a did not work for me.

I'm on a stock LJC deodexed ROM, and all values in this file are set to "WAKE", yet when I hit the home button to turn the screen on, it acts as if it's at "WAKE_DROPPED".
According to everybody else in this thread, this shouldn't be happening, but it is.

So to clarify, you're saying pressing the home button takes you to the stock lock screen, and then unlocking it takes you to the last app you were running still in the foreground?

It takes you to your last app and wakes the screen if you have s voice enabled. If you have s voice disabled like me it always annoyingly takes you to your home screen instead of the last app.

I tried to do the wake_dropped but it just turned off my button all together... I changed the file back to just wake and saved and rebooted but now the home button wont even wake the screen now...what did I do wrong?

Wake phone up with trackpad?

I think the G2 guys could have taken this one cue from the iPhone and other phones. I'm really hoping this is something we can add after root is available.
Not a big fan of having to use the power button.
I have been using widget locker app and it allows to be waken from by trackpad.

ya on my n1 it was so much more convenient to just press the trackball to wake ugh patience i guess...

Yea it is kind of irritating having to press power to wake all the time

No legendary is right. Widget locker fixes this well enough.
Just disable the notification icon and in advanced settings check "wake up with any button press".
As far as I can tell the only draw back is having to slide the bar to unlock and then having to enter ur unlock pattern if u have one.

I'm glad you found your answer on your own. I really do like that app and when it worked it was a double bonus. Had it installed on my nexus one. Can't wait for ROMS to take advantage of it soon

I used it on my Vibrant. It was kind of buggy at times. Though, I'm not sure if that was the app, or the phone.
No its the app. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't...
Another trick
If you are holding the phone in your left hand (as I mostly do), use the trick that someone posted in another thread-- Just snap the keyboard open about 1/4 of the way. It will wake and unlock in one super-quick step. It can be done in the right hand, too, just not quite as easily.

You really have to tweak settings to make it reliable... took me a bit. Hiding the notification makes it less reliable by their own admission. I have it working fine now though.

Widget Locker Enabled
Buttons > Allow Menu Button in Lock Mode
Behavior > Appear on boot
Behavior > HomeHelpers Launcher set to your preferred system home (I'm using Launcher Pro)
Advanced > Easy Wake Mode
and DO NOT hide notification icon if you can help it.
I'm also using the rotary slider instead of the standard one...
so now I press the trackpad to wake up... slide to unlick, and then use unlock pattern to get to home screen. I still prefer that to having to press the top power button.

awesome - thanks for this, i'll be giving it a whirl!
[EDIT] i just tried it out, tried many different settings (including those suggested) and couldn't get it to work more than a few times. alas, that's more frustrating than helpful, so til it's fixed i've uninstalled. thanks for trying to help out though - i really do want trackpad wake.
^ ditto. It was reliable for a while then became sporadic
This should be an app fixable thing as opposed to needing root though. I will wait I suppose.
I really want this feature too, but I don't want to have the phone wake when pressing the vol/camera keys. Is there somewhere we can request this in the next software update from T-mobile / HTC? I assume this is not remediable without rooting otherwise. I'd prefer not to root my phone just for this one feature.
i haven't tweaked any settings and my trackpad now wakes the phone up every time. I say now, as it didn't do it consistently until i un-installed a live wall paper i had (Thunderstorms) - a couple of other issues vaporized when i un-installed that app
neat wallpaper though - the developer is supposed to be working out the bugs for use on the G2

Hahhaha! Don't ask tmobile or htc for help. They'll just lock it down more. I have a headache from trying to get root access working. This nand lock really sucks! Sorry a bit off topic, I guess.
So now that we've got full root, is there a quick, simple and reliable way to wake the phone by pressing the trackpad button (i.e. wake to the unlock screen, not fully unlock).
[Edit: Found it, works perfectly on my Desire-Z, needs root. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=830806]

[SOLVED] WidgetLocker Lockscreen issues on the SGS2 i9100

I've been having issues with WLL on my SGS2.
The app works but I can't seem to be able to add custom sliders.
There is no WL themes folder and wltheme.zip files don't install.
Has anyone else been having this issue on the SGS2?
NO LONGER AN ISSUE. Turns out apk was mislabled. version installed was 1.2 not 2.02. Sorry about all this. I tried to delete the thread but couldn't.

I don't mean the sliders that come with the app. I'm having trouble adding custom sliders and themes like CowonD3Lock, PowerMod3, ArrowSlider, etc.
WidgetLocker works without a hitch on my Galaxy S2 - with custom sliders installed. The way I moved them to the phone was via Dropbox. I moved the slider .zip-files to the Dropbox on my computer, then opened the (Dropbox) phone app and selected open with WidgetLocker for the slider archives.
Problem solved. Thank you guys
i have another problem with WL, when i want to copy files to my phone thru USB cable it says i must stop all running programs. When i stop WL everything is OK.
Is there any solution to this? (if you understand my problem)
WidgetLocker is awesome, however i haven't been able to use the Alternative Wallpaper option. Anyone else having that issue? I can select one and resize it but it never appears on the lock screen. Instead I only see the homescreen wallpaper.
SOLVED!
Apparently it just didn't like me resizing the orange background selection box to max. Leaving the size just shy of full got it working.
bugs and issues
So, is it just me?
I've been trying to play with settings but unfortunately these issues remain on SGS2:
Home Button
I have unchecked "Allowed Home Button" but I can still unlock the screen when I press the home button. Press once to see WL (with a small delay - bigger than on SGS), press again to unlock.
Wake Up
I can wake up the device also by using the power button despite having Easy Wake Mode unchecked.
Stock Lock
I always see the stock orange unlock screen first when a text message or email is received. Keyguard Dance is checked. If there is a missed call, it's fine, I see the WL. Stock screen was also on when the device was downloading a Gameloft game and it is also shown before an alarm is launched as well.
Notification
I have a slider for text messaging and emails with notifications enabled. Let's say I have both unread messages as well as emails. If I unlock it, read them all, the notification bubbles are still there - they're not cleared. Unless I clear them again using each individual slider.
Can someone please help me with this... I am trying to disable the 4 default sliders to use a custom one in their place... but CAN'T. I have searched the settings but can't find out how to do this still... arggghhhh.

You don't use settings menu to change the sliders, you must hold on a blank spot on the screen for a couple of seconds, the choose custom slider. To change what the slider shall do you just drag the slider and you will get a menu what you want it to do and change icons and so.
Hope this helped you a little bit on the way.

[Q] use volume key to unlock and turn screen on

I just switched from HTC evo to Epic 4g and the app "No Lock" doesn't seem to work on Epic 4g anymore. Basically it's an app that allows me to use volume key rather than power button to unlock and turn on the screen.
Does anyone experience the same problem? Any alternative?

I do not prefer the screen to wake via the volume buttons, and several of the ROMs available have that feature enabled.
I was informed by an esteemed member about where to change this setting if you are interested in simply enabling the feature. It requires root and a root capable file explorer
Id sure like to know how to enable this feature.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I was recommended to use es file explorer, because it's easier to use to mount the /system as writeable.
Open explorer of choice and make sure it can find the root directory, and make sure that the /system path is mounted as writeable or r/w, depending on the app. Superuser will get involved and then you can go up to the highest file tier. Find the path system>usr>keylayout and find file sec_key.kl
Click to open as text and use a text editor. The first two lines are -volume_up & volume_down. if they are not followed by a space and the word 'wake' enter it.
the menu button should provide a save option. As far as I know this will wake the screen by volume buttons regardless of anything else.
Now that I go through the motions, this may only wake the screen when something is playing; music or video.
Anyway, I hope you can figure something out.

[Q] Is there a way to diable the power button from waking the Note?

I would prefer to only use the home button to wake my phone. Often I am hitting the power button when adjusting the volume.
Thanks!
Are you rooted?
yes
Simple solution then.
Basically, use an app like Root Explorer (I use Rom Toolbox) to go into your system files.
The file path for what you're looking for is: system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl
gpio-keys.kl is a key layout file. Editable with any text editor on your phone, however, be sure you save it with the same extension.
On the line that starts with "Key 116 POWER WAKE", simply delete the word "WAKE". Save the file (make a backup, TRUST ME). Reboot the phone.
All done.
I know this because I did it just yesterday when I kept cutting it on accidentally.

EDIT::: JUST tried this myself to make sure I wasn't putting foot in mouth HOWEVER. it didn't seem to work. It works with the home key... but maybe the POWER key is a bit different. Any input from anyone else?

Simple solution then.
Basically, use an app like Root Explorer (I use Rom Toolbox) to go into your system files.

That's to disable home buttons wake but not the power button.
Edit: I see you've edited your post.

Thanks for the insight, however, I sourced that out already and tried it a dozen times and the power button still wakes the phone?
I noticed. I think the POWER function is attached to WAKE somehow.

Careful ...If you disable the power button wake feature, and mess up the file structure, you may not be able to turn the device on or off.
And a nandroid restore of the previous build will be needed.
Not trying to insult anyone's intellect here, just pointing out a possible problem and hate to see people suffer like that....g

Disabling the pwer button wont effect it from an off state. Also long press would still be intact so theres access to the power menu. You know I might be interested in this as well. Ill watch this thread unfold
I use an app that turns then phone off by gestures over the proximity sensor, or in my case when I close/open my flip cover. It's called proximity screen off pro and has an option to not recognized the power button being used at certain times, which you can set up.
Hope this helps.

[Q] Help me disable the menu & search button.

My D710 is driving me insane with the phantom menu button. Its so bad my search button has been going off at random too. This of course only happens when I am sending text messages, or receiving them. Which makes it extremely frustrating.
I know there's ways to disable these buttons. I do not have my phone rooted, and would rather not root it right now. I am still fighting sprint to replacing it with a different brand, but they insist on repairing it over and over again. If I root it, that will just give them ammo to deny my claims.
Is there anyway to disable the buttons on a bone stock GB27 setup?? Thanks in advance.
If you hold down the menu key. Search will pop up. So your search key is fine. The menu phantom press triggers a "hold" on the menu key at time thus, search pops up. There's a thread someone in the general forum that "fixes" the problem with the menu key.
EDIT: Unfortunately, the file to remap the keys are at system level, so rooting is the only way. You can temporary root, however.

No, if i hold my menu button down... nothing happens. But if i hit the search bar, search pops up.
I am having phantom menu & search buttons. My phone has a mind of its own whenever data is being transfered over the network. My daughters D710 does not act nearly as bad as mine does. Her's does phantom menu every now and then, but mine phantom menu & phantom searches EVERY SINGLE TIME. Unless i am at the sprint store of course.
Anyhow, I understand now that its not possible without root. When you say temporary root, does that mean just root, do the mod & then return to stock? Or is there some other method of temporary rooting?
Hmm.. On stock the way the keys are for me are the way I explained.
Anyway. When finishing running the exploit, you reboot, once the phone is booted, you'll have root. Once you finish editing the file, reboot. Once booted, root is gone. There's an app called frama-root for our device that let's you temp root if I remember correctly.

Here is a tutorial on how to disable your key so you can use pie control and LMT. @graydiggy put it together and it works great, but you'll have to send it back to Sprint and have them replace the pba(mother board) to fix the issue completely. Be sure to thank him if it works for you! Happy Thanksgiving

I sent my phone to Samsung twice for warranty repairs. They replaced the screen first, then when I sent it back they replaced the PBA. The problem never got any better, so I took it to my local sprint store where the tech was well aware of the issue. He replaced my screen (again) and it seems like the problem has gotten worse.
I will take a look at the tutorial you linked and see if i can make this work. Does that tutorial require me to root my device?
Yup, you'll need to be rooted.

Great, so I followed the guide and Disabled the softkeys, then enabled the Navbar. Seems like that took care of it, so far I have had 0 phantom keypresses.
I hate giving up screen space for the navbar. Especially when only the Menu button is at fault. Is there anyway to disable JUST the menu button, and leave the Home, back & search keys?
Thanks again for the help guys.
This method is for the power button, but I'm sure you could remap the menu button too-http://androidforums.com/showthread.php?t=796092

Okay so today I flashed this ROM to my phone: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1889349
I went to get rid of the hardware buttons... but the modified generic.kl file did not disable the hardware keys like it did with the stock rom.
Any ideas why and how I can get the mod to work with the MIUI rom??

I fixed the problem by replacing the phone.
I got a LG G2. I will never get another Samsung phone.
