[Q] Is there a way to diable the power button from waking the Note? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

I would prefer to only use the home button to wake my phone. Often I am hitting the power button when adjusting the volume.
Thanks!

Are you rooted?

yes

Simple solution then.
Basically, use an app like Root Explorer (I use Rom Toolbox) to go into your system files.
The file path for what you're looking for is: system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl
gpio-keys.kl is a key layout file. Editable with any text editor on your phone, however, be sure you save it with the same extension.
On the line that starts with "Key 116 POWER WAKE", simply delete the word "WAKE". Save the file (make a backup, TRUST ME). Reboot the phone.
All done.
I know this because I did it just yesterday when I kept cutting it on accidentally.

EDIT::: JUST tried this myself to make sure I wasn't putting foot in mouth HOWEVER. it didn't seem to work. It works with the home key... but maybe the POWER key is a bit different. Any input from anyone else?

That's to disable home buttons wake but not the power button.
Edit: I see you've edited your post.

Thanks for the insight, however, I sourced that out already and tried it a dozen times and the power button still wakes the phone?

I noticed. I think the POWER function is attached to WAKE somehow.

Careful ...If you disable the power button wake feature, and mess up the file structure, you may not be able to turn the device on or off.
And a nandroid restore of the previous build will be needed.
Not trying to insult anyone's intellect here, just pointing out a possible problem and hate to see people suffer like that....g

Disabling the pwer button wont effect it from an off state. Also long press would still be intact so theres access to the power menu. You know I might be interested in this as well. Ill watch this thread unfold

I use an app that turns then phone off by gestures over the proximity sensor, or in my case when I close/open my flip cover. It's called proximity screen off pro and has an option to not recognized the power button being used at certain times, which you can set up.
Hope this helps.

Slide To Answer....

Not sure if this is the right section to post this in, however I thought it would at least be a start. Seems that a lot of people, especially those with a Sense ROM, like the slide to answer. I was hoping there was a way to change the default slide to answer, to a single downward slide, instead of having the dual horizontal options. Any ideas?
Get Widget Locker… it has the Sense style slide and replaces your lock screen.

Woops brady, sorry, accidentally click on thanks a free one for you lol.
Anyways, when you mean slide to answer, do you actually mean to answer or to unlock the phone like wat vn1977 mentioned? Currently, to answer a call you only get the 2 main buttons, answer in green or decline in red. this is built into the rom and cannot be changed. But if you just want to change the unlock screen, then yes, get widgetlocker. Plenty of options.

Just wondering, are you on the right forum? Are you using the Nitro or are you talking about the Atrix?
You can go back to default android lock screen by VERY CAREFULLY edit /system/build.prop file
Replace

But, the image i posted is what I get when I'm on the lock screen. Come to thing of it, I had that for a couple of days when I just had the phone, and afterwards, it sticks with what I show. Same thing happened to me on the Atrix.
Let me guess, it has something to do with other software installed? For example that grey icon with a little lock in your status bar?
I get the same lock screen as Vano with an incoming call.

Yup, now that [email protected] mentioned it, it is apparently due to Widgetlocker that I am getting a different incoming call screen. Wow, didn't realize it was due to that.
Brady, I'm not sure what you meant that widgetlocker only works whenever the screen isn't locked. The app is intended to overwrite the default unlock screen of the phone, and it seems now we found out that it affects the incoming call screen as well. I'm not even sure what else it has changed on the phone lol.
Btw, it can't be due to GO Dialer can it? I also have that installed so I don't know which app is causing the change.
I'm using Go Locker with ICS theme and I get the two buttons like Aquariuz. I don't even remember if it was different when stock. I'm rooted, but haven't done anything with ROMs or CWM or any of that.

[Q] use volume key to unlock and turn screen on

I just switched from HTC evo to Epic 4g and the app "No Lock" doesn't seem to work on Epic 4g anymore. Basically it's an app that allows me to use volume key rather than power button to unlock and turn on the screen.
Does anyone experience the same problem? Any alternative?

When you say 'it does not work' is that what you want it to do? Because it's only supposed to bypass the lockscreen

It seems to be able to bypass the lockscreen but not turn the screen on with volume key. Funny thing is that the volume key works sometimes, but not all the time.

I do not prefer the screen to wake via the volume buttons, and several of the ROMs available have that feature enabled.
I was informed by an esteemed member about where to change this setting if you are interested in simply enabling the feature. It requires root and a root capable file explorer
Id sure like to know how to enable this feature.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I was recommended to use es file explorer, because it's easier to use to mount the /system as writeable.
Open explorer of choice and make sure it can find the root directory, and make sure that the /system path is mounted as writeable or r/w, depending on the app. Superuser will get involved and then you can go up to the highest file tier. Find the path system>usr>keylayout and find file sec_key.kl
Click to open as text and use a text editor. The first two lines are -volume_up & volume_down. if they are not followed by a space and the word 'wake' enter it.
the menu button should provide a save option. As far as I know this will wake the screen by volume buttons regardless of anything else.
Now that I go through the motions, this may only wake the screen when something is playing; music or video.
Anyway, I hope you can figure something out.

Since my power does not function I had to depend on the volumes to wake my phone. I found that it didn't always work properly and sometimes would not even wake up the phone as if the volume control had gone to sleep when the phone went into deep sleep. The only thing that I've had work flawlessly is Gravity Screen Pro.

alright, this has just been a quick shot. I'm not on CM7 atm and I can't recall everything. First of all: did you just flash CM7 or did the problems occur suddenly while you were already using it for some time?
2nd: reading this once again: waht exactly do you mean with "the clock options" are you talking about the clock & weather widget
Sounds to me like it thinks its connected to a car dock, give the USB port a good clean out. Something may be shorting it out.
Not sure about the clock but when my USB port broke on the s2 it did pop up every now and then.

speaker problem.
I had the same problem at one stage . the solution I found was to use android assistant (or any app capable of uninstalling system apps) to remove carhome.apk which is found in the System/app folder. that solved all my problems. I believe this app was falsely picking up car mode or something. anyway, whatever it was is fixed now that I deleted that.
I was thinking exactly this.
When I press the home button this screen appear, instead of the default screen of the launcher.

[Mod] Change Home button wake mode

Based on this awesome mod for the S3: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1836758
For the Note 2 (I can only vouch for the Sprint version), you need to edit a different file.
1. Mount as R/W and open /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl.
2. Scroll to the line that says:
"key 172 HOME WAKE"
3a. Now if you want to make it so the Home button never wakes the phone, delete everything after the 2 so it looks like this:
"key 172"
OR
3b. Alternatively, you can change "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED" in step #2 if you use the stock lock screen and want your home button *NOT* to send you back to the home screen when you use it to wake. In my opinion Samsung should have defaulted it to WAKE_DROPPED in the first place. For what it's worth, WAKE_DROPPED doesn't seem to have any effect on WidgetLocker. If you use WidgetLocker, I suggest just doing step 3a instead.
4. Save it, lock the filesystem, and reboot.
Thank you worked perfectly. Home button returning home was very annoying! ... kinda ironic

Depends what lock screen app you're using. If you're using stock, you can do as my post said and replace "WAKE" with "WAKE_DROPPED" and it will show the last app used.
I have the pin lockscreen but it only comes on every 30 mins of no usage. Otherwise the screen turns on immediately with no lockscreen. I playing with this and just cant get the home button to work like it did in ice cream sandwich and just power on the device when the syatem is off. I hate how it now powers on the device, closes your last app and takes you home. I know i can just hit power but that is not convenient for how i use my phone.
Thanks for sharing this.
When I look at my file, it seems like keys 115 & 114, volume up and volume down, respectively, also has "WAKE" assigned to them. However, the volume buttons do not wake the phone. Why?
For clarification, if I wanted to keep the home button from waking the phone, I would edit the line to read key "key 172"?
I wonder if I can simply remove or comment out the line? (using ";")
Edit: Adding a ";" in front of the line indeed disables the line. My home key no longer wakes the phone.
I'm still curious about 115 and 114, why are they assigned as wake but do not wake the phone?

Depends what lock screen app you're using. If you're using stock, you can do as my post said and replace "WAKE" with "WAKE_DROPPED" and it will show the last app used.

It works, but at the cost of the Home button not turning on the phone. I'm looking for an option where the Home button still wakes the device but goes to the last app prior to the phone going into sleep mode. Any thoughts?

For the Note 2 (I can only vouch for the Sprint version), you need to edit a different file.
1. Mount as R/W and open /system/usr/keylayout/gpio-keys.kl.
2. Scroll to the line that says:
"key 172 HOME WAKE"
3a. Now delete the HOME so it says:
"key 172"
3b. Alternatively, you can change "WAKE" to "WAKE_DROPPED" if you use the stock lock screen and want your home button *NOT* to send you back to the home screen when you use it to wake. In my opinion Samsung should have defaulted it to WAKE_DROPPED in the first place. For what it's worth, WAKE_DROPPED doesn't seem to have any effect on WidgetLocker. If you use WidgetLocker, I suggest just doing step 3a instead.
4. Save it and reboot.

When I first did this I used ES File Explorer to make the edits. It didn't work so I went back to change it back and even though I went back to the default settings the Home button does not turn on the device. So, I downloaded Root Explorer thinking that would help. The strange thing is when I go into the gpio-keys.kl file to edit, it is completely blank. So, I added each line manually and then hit save and exit. But, when I go back into it, it is blank again. I assume that all of this has something to do with the home button not turning on the phone. So, what am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?
I have the same problem. I use Widget Locker and would like to know how I can get the home button to simply wake up the device without it taking me to the home screen and bypassing my lock screen.
Edit: 3a did not work for me.

I'm on a stock LJC deodexed ROM, and all values in this file are set to "WAKE", yet when I hit the home button to turn the screen on, it acts as if it's at "WAKE_DROPPED".
According to everybody else in this thread, this shouldn't be happening, but it is.

So to clarify, you're saying pressing the home button takes you to the stock lock screen, and then unlocking it takes you to the last app you were running still in the foreground?
It takes you to your last app and wakes the screen if you have s voice enabled. If you have s voice disabled like me it always annoyingly takes you to your home screen instead of the last app.
I tried to do the wake_dropped but it just turned off my button all together... I changed the file back to just wake and saved and rebooted but now the home button wont even wake the screen now...what did I do wrong?

I have the same problem... Posted a few messages above you. Glad to see I'm not the only one that did something wrong (although I'm not sure I did anything wrong)... Now, how do we fix it???

Check your settings for your wifi. Try changing to either 2.4 ghz or 5 ghz.... also try your router on channel 11.
As for the sound... There arnt any devs that know how to do this yet.

Thank you
It is fairly easy. You will need to edit a text file in the folder /system/etc. I'm not sure you can access that if you aren't rooted. The file to edit is default_gain.conf. Use a text editor and VERY carefully edit just the speaker section changing the numbers to match the example below on the screen shot. It may distort a little at max volume but drop the level one notch or use a level of 60 where I used 62.

Depending on your device, the file to edit may have a slightly different name. It end with. CONF and the contents will look like the screenshot. I have done this on a Note2 and a Tab3. You have to reboot after the edit.

I don't see it anywhere in that folder...even with es file manager set for showing hidden files. Can we just create the file? Or do it have to be there originally?

Sorry I was slow in responding. The file absolutely must be in /system/etc. It will show up after the various folders. It is default_gain.conf. I don't know if a non-rooted user can see that file. Are you rooted.?
I don't see a way to upload a file from XDA Free on the tablet. All you need to do is carefully change a few numbers and reboot and you will have all the volume you want.
