I'm sort of the local android advocate where I go to school, and I've convinced a close friend to purchase the note 2 when his contract expires soon. He's coming from an iphone and I've promised him so many things that android delivers that Apple fails to do. In my personal opinion, Samsung is the way to go; they make the fastest phones with best optimization and I'd be hard pressed to purchase anything by any other manufacturer (lg, htc, motorolla, etc). Also in my opinion, the note 2 is by FAR the best phone out now (even more so than the nexus 4, go look at the massive amount of problems they're experiencing). I recommend him the note 2 because he live design and I think he'll appreciate the spen coupled with the note 2s great engineering. However, there's some things I truly need to know. I don't want to set him up with an android phone and have a bad experience thus shutting him out to the idea altogether, the last thing I want is him running to the iPhone 5 so, can you guys answer me these.
1: even with jelly bean, are there hiccups? Freezes in touchwiz ever?
2: are apps well optimized? Smooth, with no crashing?
3: is the screen beautiful despite the low ppi?
4: is the battery life REALLY that phenomenal?
5: how accurate and responsive is the spen. The model in the store left much to be desired. It was very unresponsive.
6: are there build defects with this device often? Sammy normally does a good job producing their products
7: camera quality/speaker loudness?
Or any issues in general that would put a newcomer off. I'd really like his conversion to android to be flawless, thus beginning my slow progression into leading android to world domination! Thanks in advance!

The only thing I see turning someone off this phone is the size. If it is too big, steer them to the DNA, GS3 or One X+ (though battery life will suffer with those compared to the GN2). All your listed potential concerns are non existent for me. This coming from a three generation Nexus user.

I've had the note 2 for a little over 2 weeks and I can answer a few of these for you.
3. The screen is amazing. My sister bought the iphone 5 and we compared screen resolution. I assume since the note is so large it doesn't need to be close to your face so it looks much better.
4. I let my battery go from 100% to 7% and got great battery life. It lasted over 24hrs. Better than any device I've owned other than my iPad. But I dont call and text on my iPad all day either.

5. I've only used the Spen a few times but it is very handy, and I'm left handed which you can change in the settings. The model is always garbage when they have the pen just hanging there like a detached limb It's much better in 'real life'.
7. Camera is great. I used it to record video and I felt like I was being biased about how great it was, but after uploading the video to facebook people commented wanting to know what camera I was using.
I haven't used touchwiz since I've had this phone. I use Nova Launcher which is great on rhis device.
I think the Note 2 is a great choice for your friend. I was a huge iphone fan and now I wouldn't take anything for my GN2.

I waited for the Note 2 for over a year and am very happy with it.
1. TouchWiz is smooth, very smooth. No problems in that respect.
2. The apps I use all work very well and i have many. A few admittedly can seem "out of focus" on the large screen. Ver few!
3. The screen is brilliant. Reading small text is the test and it is crisp and clear, the blacks are as black as night CHOOSE A SCREEN PROTECTOR CAREFULLY!! I have a Copter screen protector on now and it ruins the display quality. Especially text. I am trying to fing en alternative now.
4. The battery is truly phenomenal.I had a couple of busy days at work and so only had time to use it intensively for about 12 hours over a two day period. The battery lasted 2 days 5 hours!!
5. The S-pen is accurate, very useful and a is designers and photo editing nerds (me) dream. That's why i skipped the sII and sIII. It is however also very useful for many other things as well. Navigating web pages and screen menus without zooming in to 400% saves lots of time.
6. Some users have mentioned build defects such as the "creaky" back cover. I came from an SI so this neither bothers me nor worries me. (My SI now works better and faster than it did when i bought it two and a half years ago.) This creakiness will bother someone coming from iphone, The plastic feel will also bother him/her. You will have explain that it is to keep the weight to a minimum.
7a. The picture quality is very good in the right conditions. As with any camera you need to know its limitations. The camera is not as fast as the camera on the iphone. In my experience the iphone camera opens and focuses quicker. Once the Note 2 has focused shats are taken as quick as on the iphone. This is the only thing that makes me jealous of iphone users.
7b. Speaker volume and quality is excellent.
You have many questions but at the end of the day, your friend will be the judge.
I will tell you this. I personally don't know anybody I've shown my Note II who was not impressed. I actually converted one of my co-workers over from an iPhone 4. He was AMAZED at what he was messing. He is absolutely in love with his device and learning more every day.
You won't be able to stop him from having a bad experience. Let him buy the phone, be there for him if he has any questions, and then watch him fall in love with the device. Watch him get giddy when he plugs in his headphones and his most used audio apps pop up. Watch him as uses apps such* as Smart Toggler, Tasker, or other Touch Wiz tweaks to automate toggling WiFi, GPS, Data, and Sound.
There is nothing an iPhone 5 can offer him that he can't find on the Note 2 except iTunes. Then again...Google Play is pretty freakin' impressive. Show him how to remotely install apps from his PC. Make him factory restore his device and then log in to see all his settings + apps restored automatically!
Basically show him the strengths of Android. The Galaxy Note 2 will MORE than speak for itself.
I can answer all of your questions in favor of the Note 2. The deal breaker may just be Android. When you are used to one OS for so long, especially one that never changes it can be hard to make the switch. Android can be overwhelming to someone who is accustomed to the simplicity of iOS. But if he's a little nerdy, or just likes to customize stuff he will dig it.
Either way, he can return it if he doesn't like it. If he gets it from Best Buy there's no re-stocking fee even, and I think you have 30 days...

1: I experience hiccups occasionally and freezes rarely but its not like a freeze then fc....its more like a slow response

3: I cam from a s2 skyrocket and the screen is beautiful to me.
4: the battery life REALLY is phenomenal! (just put your words in the right places)
5: For me, the spen is accurate but responsive is really subjective. There was a 1/4 to 1/2 second delay for the Spen (for me atleast and maybe its app related...I don't use the pen much)
6: I havent found any build defects but I'd imagine it will seem of less quality due to the fact the battery is removable and thus the back could have some creaks. The phone doesnt have any flex in it though....but I havent tried very hard to find flex

are you serious with this one?
there are 40 inches HDtvs with the same resolution of this 5.5 inches cellphone screen... i personally think anything higher than this on a screen this small, your eyes can't see the differences.
As for the battery, i usually do 3 days on a full charge with my Note 2, its an extreme upgrade from my old iphone 3gs (1 day only)
Unlike my iphone, none of the apps crashes.

The only reservation I have with the Note II, is the battery. I realize that there are so many people reporting these outrageously amazing battery times (usually without stating HOW/WHAT exactly they are doing on their phones and how they are managing to achieve these phenomenal battery lives) but I, unfortunately, am not one of those people who have experiences these unheard of battery statistics.
Grant it, standby time has been unrivaled. I've gotten almost 38 hours of battery life on my Note II. However, the most important metric—which is your screen-on time—was less than four hours... many not have even been three hours. I've seen many people reporting 24+ hours of battery with 10+ hours of screen-on time. Again, not sure how people are doing this. I have replaced my old iPod touch with the Note II. The Note I and II are the only phones I've ever had that were TRUE iPod/iPhone music player replacements. If I listen to just a bit of music, look at a few videos stored on my phone, play a few games for a little bit, and add a bit of web browsing to the equation... I can EASILY be down to about 50% battery after only 2.5-3 hours. Nowhere near what other people are reporting. Also, in many professional reviews, it's almost a toss-up with reported battery life. Half of the reviews state the ridiculously crazy amount of battery time others have reported on here, yet the other half are in my camp, stating that the battery is only as good as what you'd expect from a phone like the Note II and it isn't anything to write home about.
So that's the only thing I'd caution someone on. Either you'll be lucky and get the crazy great battery/phone or you'll end up with the red headed stepchild like I apparently have. Beyond that, I can't say anything bad about this phone.

Smooth, with no crashing? this is the one problem with android, yes apps all function flawlessly. however we are not apple. they only have to make a few mods bc well they only make it for iphones ipads etc. so the support is a bit better i would say in that term. but apps on android are amazing. the open sourceness of things is fantastic.
3: is the screen beautiful despite the low ppi? NO COMMENT. i honestly believe the iphone screen is one of the best there is. but the sheer size and quality, ( specs wise it may not be as good as iphone) but i like it so much more than the iphones.
4: is the battery life REALLY that phenomenal? YES yes and YESSSSSSSSS. throw in undervolt and ul be all day. u can easily reach 12 hours screen time ON with HEAVVVVYYYYYY use.

It was very unresponsive.? this all depends, after kernel updates and custom rom, there is a small small window of lag behind it but its nothing that will change or make it worse. i think it is phenomenal to be honest with you

Sammy normally does a good job producing their products- i can testify i had a defective unit. 12 days later i went to att and got a new one. my speaker jack was bad, i could not plug it in bc it popped right back out. my usb cable also came lose very very easy. new one i got is absolutely perfect.
7: camera quality/speaker loudness? camera... there i no other like it. the pictures are INSTANT and quality, well i dont need my camera anymore. speaker is loud, but they really couldve used better speakers for this beast.

BTW as an ex-iphone user, the only thing i miss is the rocker switch to switch from loud to Vibrate and vice-versa of course i think all the +values are worth this loss but i hope samsung will be able to so some kind of rocker switch like this someday (and make it configurable so we can so wathever we want with it )

your battery life is worse than normal, but not to much. 2.5 - 3 hour screen on for 50% battery is normal, if everything is on.
you can do better if you want to. but for a normal user who don't know what is wake lock, kernel, it's fine.

This phone actually sucks. Freezes, terrible battery life and screen is tooooo small.
I love my Note 2. I, like most everyone in this thread have had no issues with this device at all. I don't use TouchWiz though as I prefer Nova for the customization benefits. I came from a GS2 and for me it was a huge upgrade. The most deterring thing is the screen size, for me it isn't a big deal. My fiancee (she's only 4'10") loves to use my phone and the size doesn't bother her. Granted she has to use 2 hands but it's worth it. It's a great device and will only get better. Battery life is pretty good, but I also don't get these crazy reports of 10+ hours of screen time and 1+ days till dead on top of the screen time. I average 4 hours with just about everything turned off except Mobile Data, WiFi and sync. Disabled most of the pre-installed bloatware and I do have a live background. The S-Pen is so so for me, in certain apps it's a little slow but others it's spot on with where I draw. Haven't cared to adjust the pen itself since I don't use it all that much. All in all I am very impressed and highly recommend this phone.
I think getting the crazy 1 day + battery life has a lot to do with the way you customize the phone settings.
I used to blow through the entire battery in 4 hrs as well but since learning more about different roms/kernels and other things that drain your battery I have managed to stretch it to 1 day 14 hrs with similar heavy usage
Like I said you have to get the settings just right. Also in my experience these 1 days + between charges are only attainable when im at home on weekends and have wifi on 24 hrs a day. LTE is a huge battery drain not to mention that it has not been implemented everywhere so you also lose battery when the phone toggles between LTE and whatever else is available at the time.

1) I have yet to experience anything wrong with touch wiz ui. Never had a freeze or shut down and I have quite a few apps installed as well.
2) Apps. There are (I imagine) apps that aren't as good as others. Of all the apps that I use/used I haven't had any that have even slowed the note 2 down.
3) the screen is absolutely awesome. There have been tests done that compare this to the iPhone 5 and they are dead even.
4) battery life is the best I've seen on any smartphone period. I've had lots of phones including an iPhone.
5) The spen is very accurate. Dead on. The only gripe I have about the spen is when you hover it shows up on the screen. I can hold my spen about 2-2.5"away from the screen and it pops up. I wish it had to be held just s little closer before recognizing it.
6) mine is built very solid and feels strong in my hand (s). Some units were reported to have usb issues not fitting tightly and even falling out when you plug it in. I haven't experienced that. But one would take it back for a new one should they get a unit with that issue. No squeaks, noises or moans out of this thing.
7) speaker loudness is good enough. Camera quality is superb with so many options coming on the stock unit. The are tons of other camera apps that are available to suit your fancy as well.
I haven't had anything wrong with my unit. No speed calls call clarity is fantastic. Easily heard and the pression on the other line never complains they can't hear me or otherwise.
If your friend had even a similar experience with his potential until that I've had he'd be thanking you for years to come. There are so many options and customizations you just can't get with iphones that are easily available for Android. I jumped from the Apple bandwagon to android a little over a year now and can't believe it took me that long.
One recommendation tho, when you both get your new note2's get a FlyGrip put on it. It'll allow for true one-handed operation without jeopardizing losing control of your device and dropping it. Plus it serves as a nice stand. In my opinion the FlyGrip is a must have for phones and tablets alike.

First off...you need to understand something...folks can have a bad experience..regardless of wither the phone is perfect for you and others or not. You need to really see what he does with his I-phone before trying to convince him to change. Many I-phone lovers have a great deal invested in them not only for the phone and apps..but other apple products,and if he is one of these types..chances are his experiences will differ greatly than someone who isn't so invested..If he is only used to using I-Phones and uses a Mac instead of a PC...has Apple TV..and I-pads..it is going to be a hard sell..
Now..if he isn't one of these types..then you still need to see what he likes and dislikes about the phone he is currently using and show him the differences in a good working model of the Note II...there are many stores that seem to have some non-functioning demo units that these units that have been screwed up by folks playing with them while on display..I've see several like this..so..just beware...You need to find out what he wants to do with his phone and what his expectations are....Now to your questions..
1) Some times..just as with any phone that is on the market..Samsung is not immune to this...nor is Apple...and for anyone here to say otherwise is biased ignorant or just a hater of Apple.
2) For the most part...yes...but that is not to say you or anyone else won't get a bad one from time to time...wither it is coming from Apple's app store or Google's...Apps for Android has to span so many different versions of phones as opposed to Apple apps...so some that work flawlessly on one persons phone may not on another's phone.This is why some say Apple is better...and Android is fragmented..I can say it's a lot better today than just a year ago..Apple is not immune to having bad apps it does and has happened..
3) Absolutely it is...and it is one of the main selling points of the phone..It is night and day compared to any of the smaller screens out there including the I-phone 5.
4) Yes & no...it can be or it can be average...or in some cases dismal...and a lot is going to depend on the individual...and a-lot is going to depend on the phone itself. I can say this..I've had much better luck with mine than some have and have better luck than with any other Android phone I have used in the past..The nice thing about it though..is this forum and the folks here that go out of their way to help those with issues...unlike the standard answer one will get on the majority of I-phone forums and that is to take it back..
5) Like I said in the beginning...you can't always measure a phone by what you see as a demo unit..Way too many little hands doing their best to bork it..but mine is very responsive.
6) You will have defects in any manufacturers phone...including Samsung or Apple. Both are for the most part exceptional phones..Some folks have to have a 100% perfect product and will scream bloody murder if it isn't...some aren't so picky..This will be up to the person your trying to convince really..and as long as he understands this..and understands if he gets a damaged one to take it back..it's a no brainer.
7) Both are excellent..both have some minor differences between makes..but both will do a great job..If a person needs a better camera...they should get a dedicated camera IMHO...and as too the loudness and quality of the speakers..my Note II is louder than any unaided I-phone out there..This was something I disliked about my other Android phones...but on this one..it is one of the things like the screen size that blows away the competition entirely.
So...I have to ask..is you friend happy with his I-phone now ? Are you just trying to get them to switch because of your preference ? If yes to both..your possibly setting yourself up for a very unhappy situation..If they are really wanting to switch..they will..Many folks are deeply disturbed by Apple's relentless lawsuits..and lack of recent innovations...Many more are seeing all of the negative TV adds and are questioning themselves as well..Just know this before you say much more to them..if they are the type of individual that wants to set it and then forget it..they may be much better off with a Apple I-phone than a Android one..While most Android phones can be used like that as well in reality...the simple fact is the majority of I-phone users expect theirs to work perfectly out of the box...and many past Android phones which are the bulk of the phones on the market haven't been that way. While you may be here and can see what can and can't be done to them...you have to ask them if they are willing to actually learn how to do this..Many many people aren't willing to mess with their phones by either jail breaking them...or rooting them and installing custom features..so they are a set it and forget it type of individual...
Phone for phone comparing the Note II against a 4s I-phone..is a no brainer really..it offers so much more that that one..Comparing it to a I-phone 5..will depend entirely on the individuals taste/wants/needs..and also what their carrier offers as far as connectivity for LTE as well as how deeply they are invested in Apple products..and their family& friends as well. From a purely personal perspective..I prefer my note to either the 4s or 5 I-phones because of what I do with it..and that is something your friend is going to have to decide for themselves...

Hello everyone! I'm currently using an iPhone 4 on AT&T and I recently played with a Galaxy Nexus at Verizon after watching a lot of videos on it (I just had to play with one). I must say, I loved the screen from the short amount of time I used the phone and loved the interface of Android 4.0. I've been using iOS for awhile now and its not because I'm a 'lemming' or some other ridiculous term (please lets keep the fanboyism out of this) and have always jailbroken my phones. The Galaxy Nexus just seemed very nice (although I dislike the backing of the device) and I'm not sure if it's just the allure of something different since I'm so used to iOS (which I'm finding to be stagnant) or if its because its that much better.
I guess I would like to hear anyone's experience with the device, especially if they upgraded from an iPhone 4 as well. The biggest complaints I've heard about the phone are the sub par camera, the build quality, wifi issues, multitouch problems, and battery issues (this one worries me). Upgrading to the SGN would cost me quite a bit, probably around $650 dollars. I'm thinking I could sell my phone off for about $250-$300 making the price slightly more bearable.
Few of the things I liked while playing with it:
* Increased screen size with high pixel density
* Ice Cream Sandwich has a very futuristic feeling to it and I absolutely love the look of it
* Seemed very fast
* Camera took very fast photos
* Full screen browser was amazing (so much more content)
* Face unlock
* Live wallpapers (is this a big battery drain?)
So from a purely objective opinion (not a biased one, although I suppose that is impossible to avoid) do you think its worth the price for me to upgrade to a Galaxy Nexus from the iPhone 4?

I also had an iPhone 4 and chose to upgrade to this phone. Best choice I ever made when it comes to phones! The killer for me was the screen, I absolutely could not go back to a 3.5" screen now. And ICS is just fab! Go for it.
What you're experiencing right now is Night. If you were to upgrade the the Nexus then you would see Day. The only disadvantage the Nexus has over the iPhone is battery life. If you can deal with that then do it.
Had a Fascinate > Charge > iPhone4 > Nexus. I just can't stand that damn 3.5" screen.
Honestly, when i had an iPhone 4, the battery life was horrid. 8 hours at most.

You pretty much nailed why this phone is better, but I think it comes down to apps. You'll miss some apps on Android at the beginning but you'll also find out that most of those apps you'll miss are irrelevant in an Android environment. You'll miss the battery life on your iPhone that's for sure unless you get a GSM version which I have, I have 10hrs on it and still 84% left of battery, didn't even try to conserve power.

Yea I don't understand the myth of iPhone 4 having great battery life.
The nexus will last 8-10 hours on 3G just like the iPhone 4/4s and it has more power hungry specs.
Although face unlock works well, I can't help but tell you it is a gimmick. Once you press the power button, it takes a while for the camera to initialize so there is some delay when unlocking (as opposed to the quick slide to unlock) but on the other hand is amazing to show-off to friends
Also, many users have reported that live wallpapers cause lag although I cannot confirm that myself. (But, when I did turn live wallpapers on, I did notice some slugishness/lag but it might be because I was running a lot of processes in the background)
The battery drain is also noticeable, for me on Android Revolution HD with Francisco Franco's kernel (dec 13 test non overclock) I get about 10 hours of usage but I still am yet to confirm the battery of the device. You should check out the galaxy nexus LTE review at www.theverge.com for more info. But I'm fairly certain that it does state the battery drain is heavily noticeable on the LTE variant.
Finally, I absolutely love the screen on the Galaxy Nexus as well. I would never go back to a ~4.5 inch screen ever again
I personally get tired of mobile OSes every couple years. I started with the original iPhone, upgraded to 3G, then jumped ship after 3GS release. Not only did I want to dump AT&T, but I also wanted to try out Android.
I was getting sick of Gingerbread so I upgraded early from my Droid Charge. I love the change so far, and I think I'll be sticking with Android for a bit longer. But coming from an Apple product you have to realize that Android will never be as polished or smooth. Google just doesn't have the closed ecosystem like Apple.
The gaming department is really disappointing for me over the iPhone, and is one of the primary reasons I want an Apple device again. But that 3.5" screen makes it hard to enjoy too lol. I think I'll just settle for an iPad 3. If you really like customizing and personalizing your devices, Android is perfect for you.
4G LTE is simply awesome. If you are around a lot of power sockets during your normal daytime gig, battery life is no big deal. Screen size is awesome. No dropped calls is awesome. And I know with Verizon, iPhone 4's fetch like $350-400 still, even after the release of the 4S.

My first android phone was a HTC Desire, then I sold it for iPhone 4S, which I was using whilst waiting for the Galaxy Nexus to be released. I've used an iPhone 2G before and to be honest 2G -> 4S has basically no difference. Using the dialer is poor, no smart dial, small screen which is pretty poor if you want to read web journals on your phone.
So many other basic features are missing from the iPhone such as you have to enter facebook to upload a picture. On Android you just take the photo, and share VIA Whatsapp/Facebook whatever. As easy as that.
Get the Nexus, you definitely won't regret it. Also if you get like a Note or SG2, it'll have the problem of when it gets ICS 4.0 it will still use the Touch Wiz which is frankly crap. So unless you're good at setting up Alternative Launchers or using Custom ROMS your best bet is just using the Nexus. Good luck.
Don't know much about the networks over there in America, but it seems that verizon is very much like Telstra here in Aus. Best coverage but biggest dicks.
That aside, I can say that the Galaxy nexus is awesome. While iOS has always been smooth, ICS has a nicer look about it. The GNEX screen is just amazing - similar to retina but more real estate, which is a winner in my books!
PS. Getting 11 mbps speeds here in aus with HSPA+ too

if you want 'safe' phone then stick to the iphone
if you want a phone you can actually enjoy and play with then go android and the GN is one of the best options out there.
I havent had much trouble with the battery to be honest yes under heavy use it can go down quite quickly (although not as quickly as some devices)...for example i used about 45% when streaming a Newcastle game for 2 hours on full brightness which isnt to bad in my experience.
In 'normal' daily use the battery performs as well as most phones so far.
A lot of iphone users throw the battery issues with android phones out there, but believe me we have had plenty of situations when iphones have drained just as quick.
Just remember that heavy data usage, poor coverage and heavy screen use are the usual culprits for batteries dying.
The GN hasnt got a problem with the battery - at least not for me

If I were to download an app from the Android Market will it scale to the Galaxy Nexus's screen properly? I imagine the graphics would have to be updated in the app to support the higher resolution, but I was curious if Google had worked anything out for generic images to scale correctly. Also do things like buttons (generic images used throughout the UI basically) change to their Android 4.0 counterparts?

Some apps scale, some don't, some will say not compatible. A lot of games don't work

Nah its just a few lines of code. Most everything will scale properly. ICS is still new and we only just recently got the Nexus. Its not even really updating graphics. Its not like Apple where things get stretched and look hideous. Completely different methods. I hated Apples method to make iPhone apps work on iPads. Most Android apps look 100% normal when scaled. Google doesn't want Tablet and Phone apps... they want 1 app that conforms to all... and most do. A few don't.
I typically take my phone off the charge at 8am. Its 8pm now with 30% left after going all day with corporate email, Gmail, Facebook, xda a few hours, and scrabble a few times. Pretty normal usage but its new so I keep tinkering with it.

Why is it that the graphics don't need to be changed? I'm sure games would need different sized graphics to take advantage of the higher resolution screen. As for the whole iPhone app iPad app thing. I would rather developers create a dedicated tablet app versus's a scaled up phone app any day, so either way isn't that great in my opinion. Great news on the battery! I'm assuming your using the GSM version of the Nexus since your on T-Mobile?

GSM? The phone feels great in the hand because it is light for how big it is. It is kind of slick and will take getting used to if you have never had a phone this big but it shouldn't be too much of a problem.. the screen is good for most people when above 20% brightness. Some people lag on the stock rom but most don't have any problems on custom roms or the latest stock rom. Also battery life for the most part is great.

Size wise I feel the Nexus is small, and no way too big at all. But I had the Epic 4G Touch with 4.5" screen, the Nexus feels smaller.
Build quality is very high, the metal band around it feels solid, and the dark gray color makes it look like a stealth fighter jet. Does not feel like cheap plastic on the Galaxy SII.
High Res screen is on par with "Retina" but with a million times better color.
ICS software is a huge leap forward for Android, makes it more mature and polished and better design over last year Androids.

I have been an iphone user for years and after spending some time using the Nexus I sold my iphone 4s to buy the Nexus. You will not be unhappy with either but the Nexus is hands down a more up to date and distinguished device for me.
Play with them both and see which appeals more to you. I was an iPhone user for 4 years until I got my Galaxy Nexus and I couldn't go back. That said, the 4S is still a very good phone and definitely has a place. It gets better battery life and has a nicer app selection, but the screen is small, you're much more limited in terms of modification/customization/app and service integration, and I feel like iOS is starting to show it's age.
I love the Nexus' huge screen, I think the design of the phone itself is nicer, and I like ICS way more than iOS.

Without a case, it's great in the hands. Even with a case it's fine depending on which one though.
But holding it raw is wonderful. The screen is absolutely amazing. Text is so crisp I almost sometimes prefer using it over my tablet! The keyboard is amazing in portrait, because of the size I can type REALLY fast and get almost no errors.
Everything is smooth too. My friend who has had an Evo 4g for a while was amazed at how smooth animations and everything else are compared to his phone.
I have unlimited 4g from Verizon and it is blazing too.

have used both. I keep changing my phones regularly. Generally every 3 months. I always have 2 phones regardless.
Now...
Sometimes as my Prof kept saying,
it all comes down to what you are used to the most.
If you are a busy man and just want to get things done and you are used to the iOS platform then go for the iPhone 4s, it really surprises me how consistent they have kept their platform from over 5 years.
But there is a price you pay. For ex when you compare the maps and email/Gmail apps; the iOS apps feel archaic.
Ics is a complete overhaul. There is a significant amount of learning curve. Not much if you are coming from iOS. But to be on the record, it is completely rewarding no matter what platform you come from (keep in mind it takes about a week)
One of the gripes that I have with iOS is that it is not Rewarding to the power user. The speed at which you do things the first time is pretty much as fast as yo can ever be.
Let me address a few issues with galaxy nexus
Size:
Mammoth like if you are coming from iOS
Little big if you are coming from the almost standard 4 inch androids.
But the feel in hand is really good. It is lighter than the iPhone 4s. After a week you wont notice the size but will really appreciate the 720p screen, the real estate that it gives you. I can't go back to the iPhone like screen size after using galaxy nexus, it is like what the first iPhone did to the typical smartphone users back then (who were mainly on windows mobile and palm/blackberry on their 2.4-2.8 inch devices)
Smoothness:
I'm on AOKP rom with Francisco Franco s Kernel and it is the smoothest Android experience.
IOS introduces a lot of delays to keep the os feeling smooth. Just try opening an app as soon as you hit the home button.
And it still lags everytime when you go to the spotlight search by swiping left on the homescreen.
Right now they have just 3 hardware platforms and then can test the heck out of it for delivering 60fps (also known as butter smooth performance) albeit making actual performance sacrifices (though I've heard from internal sources that it is becoming increasingly difficult to do so on 3gs)
The point I'm trying to make is that iOS has engineered smoothness at the cost of performance, you will have to decide for yourself if this is OK with you.
IOS vs ICS
I feel that ics and Android in general gives app developers a lot more freedom and versatility in app design (clearly demonstrated by the mlo app which is still in beta on Android but much better than the iOS app).
But app developers go by the penetration and clearly iOS has more than android (again demonstrated by the Mlo app which is still in beta on Android)
And as far as the stock apps are concerned there is no match for ics, just check the iPhone vs galaxy nexus sunspider and browesermark benchmarks on the browser which probably is the top most used app on the smartphone os (tip don't compare the iPad 2 with galaxy nexus as iPad 2 is clocked at 25% more than iPhone 4s, and there are quad core options available in android ics tablets (friend just got pics pushed to his transformer prime ))
And the Gmail app.(
ICS has a lot of potential If you are not porting over your apps from iOS , a lesson for you speed test.net)
Now to conclude I've not gone back to iPhone 4(couldn't stand iPhone 4s as it didn't have a jailbreak and hence my favourite jailbreak app swipenav which avoids the most inhumanly possible HCI design of tapping the left most corner to go back (which is probably the second most used function from going to home screen )

Im considering buying galaxy nexus due the screen, but i like the siri function in iphone and their smoothnes in the games due.
But overall the Gnex is above all much better then iphone.
But as i said erlier the gnex is much more expensive here in sweden :/

I'l give you an honest overview : the phone is SINCERELY NOT THERE to compete as a completely functional device to be honest.
And let me also tell you that I'm an Android fan boy, and I completely ABHOR apple and everything to do with them.
BUT YET. Samsung Galaxy Nexus is NOT EVEN a complete functional device yet, and paying 530 £ or so (in the UK) for such a phone - IS WASTE OF MONEY.
There are MANY glitches that makes the whole experience very unsavoury. To the point that it definitely DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A FINISHED phone to me at all.
All the gloss of ICS apart, I have seen stability issues with this phone that just totally kills every thing. And mind you this is only on 4.0.1 GSM version UK (I've others here who have the same issue)
I'm a pretty heavy user. I've had a HTC Desire and worked out the ins and outs of the system and that device was EXTREMELY usable over the years.
This phone has so many problems -
1. The LED light does not even support missed calls by default. If you had a missed call you would not know till you turn the screen on (It is a basic feature was available 2 years back on HTC desire) I dont want to install a complicated APP like Light Flow to do it. This is basic stuff that should come out of the box
2. The phone in landscape mode does not type properly, this is just hilarious. Shame on google. The typing works perfect when you keep your phone straight, but the same phone, same stuff if you type in landscape it is incredibly jittery, you dont see what you wrote for good couple of seconds! This is just SHODDY work. how can screen orientation screw up your typing so badly - i have no idea. Just shameful from google.
3. The SMS dont go many times, and I've seen many threads about the same. Apparently you can screw up the message center settings? I dont know how but I'vent done that still had SMS problems a few times. And I had to restart my phone or send multiple times to make it work.
4. The call quality is the WORST I have seen on ANY phone in my entire life. I've been using the phone in exactly the same locations as I was using my HTC desire, and the call drops so much more often that it is just unbelievable! and needless to say incredibly frustrating. If the call doesnt drop the sound, sometimes (& often), is really pathetic and many a times it is inaudible to either party on the call. Is this a phone?
5. The phone is crashing randomly, this happens every 2 days or so (lately every single day now) and I'm a pretty heavy user. People say it is because I'm still on 4.0.1 - well I dont buy that because if 4.0.3 (the latest version) was fixing so many stability issues, then there is NO reason for Google to delay the release of that version on here in the UK for such a long time. Then some people say it is because I've some app installed, well I uninstalled most of my apps - but this problem doesnt go. And the phone becoming unresponsive due to an APP sounds like a serious piece of cr*pware to me. My settings page becomes unresponsive!! How can that happen? It has NEVER happened on android 2.3.7 with my HTC desire. If an APP is buggy, your home and menu screen buttons work perfectly! your android system doesnt become unstable because a stupid APP is incompatible or buggy! but here the WHOLE PHONE BECOMES UNUSABLE!!
And there's more! The latest of the glitches, yesterday - after the usual while typing the phone crashed, and then on reboot - all widgets on my screen - were all scrambled. No widget was displaying any text but jumbled ASCII characters, when you move the widgets the text would show but not without. I rebooted and it has been okay since.
but how horrible is that to put in so much of your money to get a piece of sht phone that doesnt even work and does basic functions correctly?
6. The phone also starts lagging, and is jerky ... especially with live wallpaper. That was really frustrating to see if you bought the phone to be on the cutting edge of mobile technology!! Samsung galaxy s2 scores much higher even on CPU benchmark tests I downloaded. Galaxy nexus fails to score any more than 1700 on the tests while Galaxy S2 (almost the same hardware) notches up to 3200+ scores!!! and these are basic tests that check cpu performance and your animation rendering capabilities. You cant mess with that really.
Now this could really be because of the high resolution of the screen... which brings me to the only two GOOD points of this phone :

2. ICS - as everyone already mentioned it is a huge step up in terms of usability, and looks great deal polished. The phone feels good to navigate through, and ICS brings in some other features that make it a good OS. Others can cover on that more.
But anyway, I find those two points as largely ineffective in my choice to buy a phone (but i have unfortunately bought it and got rid of my desire and have been regretting the decision......it has been about 21 days on the galaxy nexus now)
Honestly, STAY AWAY FROM GALAXY NEXUS. The device is not worth it, and ICS evolution (especially bug fixes) and the hardware upgrades later this year would make for a really good and a competitive phone that you can buy!

2. The phone in landscape mode does not type properly, this is just hilarious. Shame on google. The typing works perfect when you keep your phone straight, but the same phone, same stuff if you type in landscape it is incredibly jittery, you dont see what you wrote for good couple of seconds! This is just SHODDY work. how can screen orientation screw up your typing so badly - i have no idea. Just shameful from google.
3. The SMS dont go many times, and I've seen many threads about the same. Apparently you can screw up the message center settings? I dont know how but I'vent done that still had SMS problems a few times. And I had to restart my phone or send multiple times to make it work.
4. The call quality is the WORST I have seen on ANY phone in my entire life. I've been using the phone in exactly the same locations as I was using my HTC desire, and the call drops so much more often that it is just unbelievable! and needless to say incredibly frustrating. If the call doesnt drop the sound, sometimes (& often), is really pathetic and many a times it is inaudible to either party on the call. Is this a phone?
5. The phone is crashing randomly, this happens every 2 days or so (lately every single day now) and I'm a pretty heavy user. People say it is because I'm still on 4.0.1 - well I dont buy that because if 4.0.3 (the latest version) was fixing so many stability issues, then there is NO reason for Google to delay the release of that version on here in the UK for such a long time. And the phone becoming unresponsive due to an APP sounds like a serious piece of cr*pware to me. My settings page becomes unresponsive!! How can that happen? It has NEVER happened on android 2.3.7 with my HTC desire. If an APP is buggy, your home and menu screen buttons work perfectly! your android system doesnt become unstable because a stupid APP is incompatible or buggy! but here the WHOLE PHONE BECOMES UNUSABLE!!
And there's more! The latest of the glitches, yesterday - after the usual while typing the phone crashed, and then on reboot - all widgets on my screen - were all scrambled. No widget was displaying any text but jumbled ASCII characters, when you move the widgets the text would show but not without. I rebooted and it has been okay since.
but how horrible is that to put in so much of your money to get a piece of sht phone that doesnt even work and does basic functions correctly?
6. The phone also starts lagging, and is jerky ... especially with live wallpaper. That was really frustrating to see if you bought the phone to be on the cutting edge of mobile technology!! Samsung galaxy s2 scores much higher even on CPU benchmark tests I downloaded. Galaxy nexus fails to score any more than 1700 on the tests while Galaxy S2 (almost the same hardware) notches up to 3200+ scores!!! and these are basic tests that check cpu performance and your animation rendering capabilities. You cant mess with that really.
Now this could really be because of the high resolution of the screen... which brings me to the only two GOOD points of this phone :

No idea which galaxy nexus u are using man , but had mine for just about a month now running aokp with franco kernel , And no i didnt use the stock i rooted and slapped a rom on after 2 days if i wanted to use what they gave me i wouldnt buy a nexus device .

your an idiot nexus is purely aimed to be a developer device.
and all the nexus devices run the latest OS which means some might have issues thats the whole reason they get updates quickly and 4.01 is suppose to be buggy thats why all the good roms are on 4.02 or 4.03 and like how 2.3.3 was the base for all gingerbread roms 4.03 will be the base for all the ICS phones.
People like u should just buy an iphone or a SG2 or some other phones which are tried and tested before they are launched not a nexus device.

When I got my Galaxy Nexus (GN) it was sheer happiness. I was using a legacy Nokia Symbian candy bar and this was my first foray into unmolested Android. While all was not perfect with the GN, I was still mostly pleased. Then the fateful day occurred when I dropped the GN a little too hard and the screen shattered even though the phone was protected by a Diztronic TPU case. I now needed a new phone, but I knew the Nexus 5 (N5) would be out soon, so I kept using my shattered GN until the N5 was available and when it arrived, I realized cracking my screen was a blessing in disguise.
Without further ado, my quick major comparisons to the GN:
The N5 is FAST. REALLY FAST. It makes my GN feel like an unfinished prototype/research model that should have never been brought to market.
The N5’s GPS locks on quickly. REALLY quickly. My GN could take a minute or more at times to get a lock and, by then, my wife, annoyed, would whip out her iPhone and tell me my phone sucks.
The N5 has “awesome battery life.” While its battery life is average in general, compared to the GN it is legendary. The GN’s screen and data connection would kill the battery and it would rarely last till the afternoon if I frequently used both. With the N5 I can make heavy use of my screen and data connection and my battery will likely last the day.
Qi support. This makes number 3 above even better and there’s no jamming of Micro-USB ports into the phone and hoping I didn’t have the port upside-down (particularly when it’s dark/at night). When I’m at my desk, my phone is always charging. When a call comes in, I simply pick up the phone and then put it back down to charge when I’m done—nothing to plug in/I’m untethered. When I leave my desk for an hour or three, I have no fear of using or pushing the phone as hard as I’d like as I know I’m probably fully charged, because the phone was sitting on the charger, and I’ll have more than enough battery life for whatever I might encounter. Qi is simply elegant and something the iPhone can’t do.
LTE. While I got decent “4G” speeds on the GN—around 8Mbps down—the 20+/30+Mbps I get now alongside far better PING times is a great improvement.
The N5 has almost zero lag. It’s really that fast. My GN was almost all lag. Project Butter improved things, but the GN still has lag all over the place. I’m sure the N5 will start to slow down as newer software makes greater demands of the hardware, but, for now, this thing flies.
If you’re still using a GN, stop. It sucks, particularly when compared to a modem smart phone. Get the N5 and stop having your wife/girlfriend tell you your phone sucks, because it does.

GN sucks? Off course if you are comparing it to a 2 year newer phone with much better specs... Compare the Galaxy Nexus with Galaxy S2 (similar hardware) or even with newer phones but without those overwhelming specs and GN still rocks.
Maybe not everyone is rich and can affort paying up to 300$ per 2 years for a new phone... We all know that Nexus 5 is better than Galaxy Nexus in everything, I would like to say "Thank you mr obvious".
The point is, I'm happy with my GN, it has poor batery, awful speaker sound and s*tty Wi-Fi antenna but aside that it is a great phone which doesn't lag at all if you equip it with a good kernel and a stable rom. Well, it lags in heavy games or apps but I'm sure a bad optimized app will also lag in the Nexus 5.
I agree with Rayaxe. Of course the Nexus 5 is a much better phone in every aspect, but why does that suddenly mean the Galaxy Nexus sucks?
And I can say, aside from games (I don't really play very demanding games, so I wouldn't know), my phone with KitKat and Mpokang flies. It hasn't lagged at all, not once, and I can multitask without problems (in 4.3 it was painful, compared to 4.4). So I also agree that with a good ROM and kernel that's not an issue.
I still want to get a Nexus 5 (which at the moment is a bit difficult for me, because of my country's massive currency devaluation), but certainly not because I got tired of my GN or feel that it's old/sucks, etc.

, I can play Asphalt 8 with graphics on Low without any lag (in medium it laggs a little bit) and I don't notice any difference in graphics (maybe some lights but irrelevant), the gameplay isn't affected even a bit so why should I care? I am not playing in a TV to tell the difference, in a small screen with a large resolution for its size (like GN) the graphics will always be good for the eye (at least for me and I'm not blind).
Asphalt 8 with Low Graphics > PSP Graphics... so, our Galaxy Nexus can preform really well in gaming, it's not that crap.
I think it's hypocritical to be a fan of the Nexus philosophy and upgrade every year cause of the specs. The original intent of the Nexus line was to show that it isn't about the hardware but the software ultimately delivers. That's why every Nexus phone up to the Gnex had subpar specs, and why people chose to buy Nexus devices cause of the philosophy. The only way I'm changing phones is when this one croaks and I haven't felt limited enough to ditch this phone for my uses. Especially over specs when realtime usage besides gaming is only milliseconds apart from $150 phone vs a $350-$700 phone. Anything, KitKat shows there's still potential to tap. Our brothers with the Nexus S, the HD2s would agree as much.

I bought this phone due to it's hype. And frankly the S2 I feel is a better phone till today. And from launch this phone had lag issues on ICS and also grainy displays.
Battery life was also rubbish from day 1. I didn't feel it back then because I had no data plan. Speaker is also another lousy aspect of this phone. I've also had stock 4.0.1 totally made me go into a bootloop.
I went through 2 screen replacements, a battery and motherboard replacement. And today my phone reboots after using 3-5 GB of space. Does it suck? I'm afraid it sucks hard.

I came from an iPhone 4 to a gnex when it first launched, I have to say I loved the large screen of the gnex at first because iPhones always feel tiny an narrow in comparison an still do to this day but everything else sucked about gnex.
Wow. I didn’t expect all the negativity and blind support for the GN, but I’m glad to see many here also agree with my assessment of the GN’s performance. My intention wasn’t to create a “GN sucks” thread, but, rather, to share my experience as a GN owner and enlighten my fellow GN owners as to how taken aback I was and how much better the smartphone experience is with the N5. I didn’t realize how good Android could be/how poor of a performer the GN is until I received the N5. Yes, one should expect the latest and greatest to perform better than an older model, but I chose to share my experience with the community because I am a part of the community and I wanted my fellow GN owners to know how significant this was for me, a GN owner.
As for the GN zealots, I apologize if I insulted you—feel free to keep your legacy device/I won’t make further commentary on this—but, again, the smartphone experience of a GN, compared to the N5, well, sucks, and after using the N5 I feel I was fortunate to have the display of my GN crack. Maybe you’ll get lucky as well .
you're comparing the n5 to a 2-year old phone. of course it will suck in comparison to the n5. the n5 will probably suck in comparison to whatever device is released this time in 2015.
on a tangent, though, i really wish these phones wouldn't get so big. i'd actually like a high-end phone that's not 5" or some craziness like that. i really wouldn't want to have to get an iphone just to get a high-end phone that is around the size i prefer.

If I didn’t get the N5 I would have gotten the Moto X, which it probably as close as you’ll get to a modern Nexus with a smaller screen.

I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight on the new 2014 Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1. I am very interested in purchasing it, but I keep reading that there is an extremely large amount of lag associated with the device's performance, and that games do not run very well on it at all. Can anyone confirm if this is true or not? I am sure there have been updates made to the firmware since these reviews were written so I was just hoping to get a current users take on it. The device is quite expensive and I definitely would want a top performer for the money.

I honestly dont mean this in a mean way but flick through these XDA pages in "General" and "Q&A" threads and you will get an avalanche of answers. Trust me going through those thrrads is miles better than giving you a reply with a few words esp considering its an expensive device.
But if you do want a simple answer then all I can say is I have played a few high graphic games and they ran smoothly and the tablet itself is pretty rapid. I am on stock so know it can be faster if I root but honestly more than happy with the performance of this thing.

Thanks to all for your replies! Has everyone rooted the device? I am a little hesitant to do that because if something should go wrong, they can indeed refuse to warranty your device. I would definitely be getting rid of touchwiz tho - its really bad. Even my Galaxy S4 lagged terribly with it and when I went to Nova Launcher, problem solved! I just know ill def be playing some graphic intensive games on it too so was wondering if the good game performance was also achieved without rooting the device

I'm just going to say that if you're coming from another high end device, you're going to feel some lag. I just got the tablet and at least for me, I feel robbed. I just paid $500 for laggy software and I've had 3 random crashes in 2 days of use.
Other than those issues, the SPen features are amazing and saying that the display is pretty is an understatement. It's really an amazing display.

The device itself has great specs and should perform amazingly, but as we know, a device is also only as good as it's software and many people are saying the stock ROM/software is very buggy and laggy and does exactly what you are saying. While changing the launcher to NOVA does take care of most of the scrolling lag (fixed the same problem on my S4 like this), it still doesn't address the lag and issues of games. I don't want to have to root the device and risk voiding my warranty to get the performance I should be able to expect out of the box for a $500+ device. As far as the SPen, it doesn't really matter to me either way.
If you just bought it and it's still doing the same things as people have been reporting for months, that means Samsung hasn't put much effort into fixing it and probably don't have many plans to do so either if it's been this long with no resolution

I got my SM-P600 32gb about a month ago and mine has never crashed, my experience with the tablet has been good but I'm not a power user, I don't have numerous home screens full of widgets, I don't have every option turned on like zoom tilt, smart stay, smart pause, smart scroll or any of the hand motion features.
I would say that this video from "TheDigitalDigest" is a fair representation of my experience, at the 9:30 mark it demonstrates the lag that some are complaining about. Both video's are worth watching.
This video also shows some lag at the 18:10 mark.

Compared to high-end S-800 phones with 5"ish displays, yes, the N10.1-14's transitions occasionally aren't as smooth. Compared to other high-end Android tablets, what in your view is faster? Multi View and S Pen have a ton of open processes constantly running in the background anticipating their use. So if you want "fast" strip out all the N10.1-14's features and run AOSP/AOKP on it. Personally, the sole reason I bought the N10.1-14 was because of its productivity features and what I can do with it that you can't do on any other tablet so if I have to put up with some transition lag so be it. As for "crashes" I've got 144 apps, 9 full time syncs, and 21 widgets running and have never experienced a crash, FC, or any other type of OS anomaly since October. I take that back. Initially I was using the Trip Advisor wallpaper on the lock screen and it would cause TW to reboot every other day. Once I stopped using it everything was fine.

95% of the time, and 100% of the time within a single app, there's no lag. When a bunch of stuff is going in the background you'll occasionally get a millisecond long stutter in a transition or app opening/closing. You'll also get the occasional "spinning wheel" when doing something resource intensive like capturing a full screen of content from a third party app via Air Command and moving it to Scrap Booker. I'm not even on the latest ROM (I'm on MJ4) because I have a 3G N10.1-14 and people in the U.S. have said MJ9 improved fluidity more than what I'm experiencing. There are aspects of the UI that are "odd" because a phone UI on a 10" display is a bit bizarre having nothing to do with specific h/w or s/w. But, again, I've had no OS, UI, or app issues since October so the s/w is definitely not "buggy." And I have additional radios, antennas, and s/w being 3G that add even more burden to the s/w and h/w.
Here's a vid of my N10.1-14 moving through home screens. My N3 on an official KitKat build that's running the same 144 apps is next to it for comparison. At the end I pinch zoom to display all the home pages. That is without question the worst lag you'll ever see on the N10.1-14. And it's 10 times worse than the millisecond long stutter you'll occasionally see in transitions.
If people are experiencing worse than that or constant lag I'd suggest they look at the apps they have installed, their configuration/settings, and what apps/processes they have removed/frozen/turned off. The latter is especially significant because as nested and inter-dependent as all Samsung's add-on s/w has become it's easy to disable something another app's dependent on and not know it. For example, disabling My Magazine on a device causes huge battery drain on the Galaxy Gear and issues with Gear Manager even though there's no logical reason one should be affected by the other. I'm running bone stock, have every gimmick Samsung's s/w provides turned on, am using an earlier less fluid ROM than some, and have an enormous amount of apps, syncs, and widgets running. I'm a prime candidate for "lag" and don't experience any 95% of the time. So if someone's experiencing worse than I am I'd suggest they examine what they've done to their device.
P.S. - Being 3G, my N10.1-14 is always connected to the Internet so whenever I turn it on it's always sync'd. Since most here have Wi-Fi versions here's something I've noticed. When I turn my N10.1-14 on for the first time, like after getting off a plane, and it connects to the Internet for the first time it can be painfully slow (and laggy) for as long as 15 minutes while every app and process that needs Internet access updates itself. I'd guess the same thing would happen with a Wi-Fi N10.1-14 even if it was left on but re-connected to the Internet after being offline. So there's "lag" and "situational lag." Both my N3 and N10.1-14 are the slowest devices I've ever owned when it comes to being fully usable after a reboot or going online after being offline.

I don't have any widgets , not even the stock Samsung ones. I also don't have much apps, nor any of the cumbersome SView or Motion controls on. I thought rooting and installing CleanRom would help and it really did, to some extent, but there is still some noticeable lag which, in my opinion, is unacceptable. As for the crashes, I don't know if I got a faulty unit since this is just day 3 of owning it. Maybe I'll return it and get another one, it may help with my lag too.

On my sister's Nexus 10, for example, I notice Much smoother transitions and I've never had it crash. I hate how even with empty home screens, there is noticeable slowness (sometimes) while changing home screens or opening the app drawer. I'm still skeptical about the crashes though, since I'm the only one getting them (it seems), so maybe it's just mine. I'll return it and get another one, so I can report back and see if these issues are somewhat fixed. Still, I feel bad that I spend so much on this and it feels slow compared to a more than a year old Nexus 10 with a much slower processor. I already removed all of the bloat, except the SPen stuff, because that was my main point for getting this tablet.

I totally agree.
Complainers seldom admit that they made mods to the device or that they have 10 screens with 50 widgets all running at the same time, they don't admit that they installed pirated software that may or may not contain viruses or that they installed an APK that was ported from an Asus tablet because they like the way the widget looks on another brand device.
To those people it's always the device and never the user.

There's a ton of discussion about N10's lagging. Friends have them and I've used them and the more crap that's installed on them the more they too suffer from transition stutter. The more crap that's going on in the background the greater chance there is that there's going to be some type of drag or delay in the interface. And it's not about performance because the stuff we're talking about that lags is probably using a single-core of the CPU and a small chunk of RAM. And on a Nexus device you can't even blame it on TW.
While you and Sis may not have experienced lag on the N10 others have...

You could have a defective unit..... Any chance that you could upload a video to show us what you are experiencing?
I had the Nexus 10 before my Note 2014. I like the Nexus 10 but the Note 2014 is blazing fast compared to the Nexus 10. The Nexus 10 was definitely laggy and my Note 2014 has been very smooth.

There wasn't really a GPU available when the N10 was released that was capable of handling a 2,560x1,600 display. Mali 604 was at its max thresholds and it showed.
The Mali 628 in the Exynos N10.1-14's is about 4 times more powerful.

of my home screen and apps just for your pleasure. ALL of my apps I bought them on the play store, none of them are pirated. I am not a dumb android user that doesn't know how to handle his tablet. It's my device, not the user. Thanks for your input though!

I'm just telling you what I notice. If I factory reset both tablets right now, i KNOW that the nexus 10 would feel buttery smooth while my note 10 would still feel laggy. Even dragging apps around the home screen felt laggy here. Understand my frustration, i just paid premium price for something that could be a lot better in terms of speed. I'm just telling things from MY experience with both tablets, and my experience with the OLD nexus 10 felt smooth compared to my experience here. You believe whatever you want.

It's just lagginess all around and the crashes aren't really predictable. I'm not going to be able to upload a video since I'm going to flash this to stock as soon as I get home so I can return it at best buy and get another one. My unit may be defective.

It was on a sealed box. I noticed when I opened it at home. It's just been 3 days since I got it. I'm returning it today and I'll report back.
Thanks to the ones of you that can see beyond fanboyism. Some take it so personal the minute you say the device feels laggy, feeling like you've insulted them personally or something. I'll report back when I get a new one.

Well this is my experience so far.
I've had this thing since November. Not rooted, not debloated. I have a couple of widgets etc and using Nova launcher. Nothing out of the ordinary. Running that taiwanese firmware which is the latest one supposedly. Anyway, 95% of the time in my experience, I don't notice any lag whatsoever. Even with multiwindow where I've been reading a pdf on the first half and using papyrus on the second half to take notes, no lag. This thing is a beast and the battery life is pretty good. If I could root without losing warranty, it would be perfect.
One day I hope CM11 comes to this thing because it's already blazing fast, and I would love to have CM11 to make it as close to stock as possible.

I'd guess the Nexus would be smoother after a reset. The pinch zooming of home screens on the N10.1-14 isn't any faster whether it's factory fresh or with a ton of widgets (in my experience). I don't think the N10.1-14 is performing to the full capabilities of its h/w and think interim updates that would have helped were stopped to focus on the upcoming 4.4/M-UX update. But having said that there's a big difference between that and inferring it's a laggy mess as a couple of people here have tried to do. So you're saying that based on your experience you're hugely disappointed with the lag you're experiencing. I'm saying that 95% of the time with the exception being some transition lag (especially when a lot of background processes are going on) my N10.1-14 doesn't lag. Since neither of us can see what the other's talking about you can lose the righteous indignation because me and a couple of people here are posting experiences that may be different than yours.

This isn't about you. People should buy what makes them happy and if you're not happy by all means return your N10.1-14 and get something that does make you happy. But you, one person sharing one experience, can lead to this...

You're entitled to your opinion but if the people that disagree with you are "fanboys" does that make you and others with a different opinion "haters?" I don't personally think so and think that the (constructive) sharing of differing opinions and experiences are healthy. Everyone here's a big boy or girl and don't need you or me to tell them how to draw conclusions and weed through posts. I post counterpoint to comments like yours sometimes to give people perspective; and whenever possible pics or videos to back up what I'm sharing. I could personally care less what people here do individually (after all, there's over 4M) and whether or not they buy a product I own or are pleased with my comments. But I've been thanked a lot so I must be doing something to help people.

I'm not sure how I got involved in the middle of this - I have had nothing good or bad personally to say about the device. I am just sharing what I've read from consumer/tech reviewers. I just worry because just as many people are saying that it is laggy as not. I understand there are different factors for this, but I am not super tech saavy with tablets either and just want a good experience right out of the box. While screen transition being slightly laggy isnt much of a big deal to me, what is this going to translate into when I play games, or do resource intense functions? I just don't want to spend $550.00 on something I am not going to be happy with. I also don't want to have to root anything to reach it's full potential because there goes my warranty.

Massive, gorgeous display. Faster than my nemesis' I7. Still need tweaks for battery life, but the trade off in performance and consumer joy is worth it.
The S8+ is the best phone I ever had so far, and the battery life is excellent.
I only have two minor issues with my S8+.
1) The speaker is too easy to mistakenly cover while gaming or watch video.
2) Sometimes on the Camera, there is a slight delay between the time you press the record button and when it starts recording, ONLY when you have it set to 4K UHD recording.
Other than that, everything else is flawless for me.
I had the Verizon Galaxy S8 from the day it was released. I really like that phone. I just purchased a refurbished Unlocked S8+ from Bestbuy for $500 because I wanted to see the difference in size and battery life. I'm so happy I took a shot on the bigger brother of the galaxies.
Battery life is better than expected and the overall size is not that different to hold. However when looking at the screen real estate the S8+ is huge and that's what I love about it. With this version I know the drawback may be reasonably timed updates, but if I decide to leave Verizon with all the T-Mobile changes, I can do it an not have to invest in a phone.

Gotta say, coming from mostly Note devices, this has to be the best phone I've ever used and owned. It's only been a couple of weeks but it's already left a big impression on me. Not only that, this is the fist phone that I've used in its stock state. No root (of course our SD doesn't have it yet, anyway) but I'm not really missing it or my S-Pen. Most of the functions my S-Pen were able to perform I can do on this phone which was a pleasant surprise. I still miss interacting with the display with the pen, though. I may move onto the Note 8 at the end of the year but right now I'm very happy with this S8 Plus.
So a quick info on my background. I have owned many Smartphones in the last 5 years, form pretty much all major brands(Samsung, Apple, Sony, Motorola). I also consider myself a Poweruser.
So this is my third Galaxy device and the first I was very happy with the S8+ for the first few weeks but I stumbled upping more and more negatives about the phone.
1. After a few hours of uptime it will start to stutter when typing fast or switching between apps.
2. The over the top animations get annoying, but if you turn them off it feels weed and even slower.
3. Battery life seems good when watching videos that are supported by the hardware decoder but most hdr stuff is not no I could not even watch The Revenant on one charge and during that the device got very warm and I encountered a few dropped frames.
4. Idle battery life is very bad (loosing 30% during the night about 7-8h) but this applies pretty much to all Android phone.
Overall it's still an amazing phone but as everything it has its downsides.

One last quick update.
Been reading through all the posts and replies on the latest root updates for the Snapdragon variants and after about a month now on this completely stock S8+ I can't see any practical reasons to go through the grind that is today's root method. It certainly isn't like it used to be as a long-time Samsung rooting fiend and now it just seems far more trouble than it's worth. This out of the box state is simply outstanding. Obviously, your experiences may vary but based on my user habits, and I run the hell outta my daily driver, it's been performing brilliantly with no issues. BixBye let's me remap that idiotic button without root so I'm good on that end which was the only real reason I was even contemplated rooting when it became available for this version.
I truly believe at this stage in Android and Samsung's combined software and hardware development on the S8+ things have finally matured enough where I'm not feeling that burning desire to root. Sure, there's a couple of apps here and there that I will miss having but I still have that Exynos Note 5 to kick around.
Fantastic phone. I will be considering getting the Note 8 but only because of that S-Pen. This S8+ is an amazing daily driver if and when I do make the switch.
The best phone on the market to date! Not only does the phone have excellent performance, but it's just a beautifully crafted device. I'd say the phone itself is..... art.

i'm on the note 4 just and was wondering about screen width,do you lose much on the s8+ compared to note 4?
There are a lot of "best phone I've ever owned" on here. I hate to be that girl, but... I agree. I love the features at the software level such as being able to make all apps full screen. I also love the phone in general from a design perspective. The display and battery are both amazing.

It's an awful phone. Unfortunately. The four things that save the situation are the following.
1. The screen is simply beautiful.
2. The camera is wonderful
3. I didn't pay it
4. The Google pixel 2 XL will be ridiculously expensive here in Greece.
The bad things are:
1. Huge battery drain. I had the last Nexus that was awful and I found it's brother. Some times I have to charge it twice a day. I use Android since 2010 and I don't make experiments. I use the same applications for years so I have a very solid knowledge of what to expect.
2. Lag. I don't know why but I have. I use the unbranded Greek version. I always install the new versions with Odin. With full format. I do the same with the Nexus and and my iPhone. In the latter two everything works so smoothly and I usually don't make the upgrades in time since I am bored for the setup. But now no no no. I have done 3 formats. One the day I bought it to unbrand it, the second in August when the latest version appeard and another one last Monday. The same. Unacceptable lag. Not that it's like a 3 year phone but it shouldn't happen.
Definetly one of the best devices Samsung had made. A true upgrade in all areas from the S7. Improvements in efficiency as well as the addition of Bixby and "infinity" put the S8+ it a clear cut above the V20, G6, and Moto G5.
