Other launchers and keyboards? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note II

So I'd like to use apex launcher instead of the stock TW jedi launcher. I tried, and I end up having spen difficulties. When pulling it out, I don't get a shortcut pop up like I'm used to. Any way to fix that?
Also, I hate the keyboard. I'm so used to SwiftKey that I don't want to switch over, but I really do make use of the handwriting recognition.
Halp!

The stock keyboard *is* Swiftkey. Turn on "Predictive text" in the keyboard settings, and then click on the words "Predictive text" to get to the Swiftkey learning screen (learn from Gmail, FB, Twitter - it always learns from SMS). Kinda hard to find, but the stock keyboard works as Swiftkey for word prediction afterwards.
Also, if you use handwriting recognition a lot, from the keyboard setings, press on the word to "Handwriting" and try changing the "Recognition type" setting from the default "Stroke recognition" to "Complete recognition." You may find the "Complete" recognition much easier to use; I did.

The problem is, the stock keyboard isn't autocorrecting words. It'll provide suggestions of correct words, but it won't do anything if I'm off by even one letter. I can't seem to find a setting for this either. That's really the only thing preventing me from using it.

Ah, true, sorry. I can't find it either. I always had that option disabled in SwiftKey so I didn't notice that the option was missing.

I'm pretty quick to type so I always get typos lol. I don't even know why Samsung would even implement a keyboard without auto correction...

I assume your refering to Page Buddy. It a feature of TW and won't come up if your running another launcher.
You can go into settings>S Pen and click "Open Popup Note" it note will pop up when the S Pen is removed.
Hope that helps.

Yes I figured out the pagebuddy dilemma, guess I'll just add the widget if I really needed it.
As far as keyboards go, I still want to be able to use handwriting recognition, but that option isn't available in the standard SwiftKey as a toggle/button on the bottom like it is in the Samsung keyboard. I wish the Samsung keyboard would just have auto correction like all the others out there..

I'm in the same boat. I like SwiftKey, but it takes a lot of the functionality out of the S-pen. The stock keyboard isn't horrible, and the predictive type is actually pretty good, but it's not SwiftKey. The other negative is that SwiftKey predictions don't show up in notes, which ends up making it worse than stock.
What I would love is some kind of version of SwiftKey that allows for handwriting recognition.

I just wish I could make a space bar insert the correction on the stock keyboard. I like the number row, but am used to just pounding through typos.

I feel so antiquated. I still opt for t9 input over almost anything else.

Haha, I can't even type with t9 anymore, I just tried lol.
I wish we could just get a keyboard with handwriting recognition...Samsung, what the hell were you thinking by not having simple autocorrect?

[Q] Nova Launcher & Spen

I would like to know if there is a way to have Nova launcher react differently or at all when taking out the Spen...I would like it to open up Snote or some app of my choosing when i remove the Spen from its slot, or at the very least, make it turn to a screen or quick memo page like it does on stock touchwiz...
PLEASE someone tell me this is possible.
That is a touchwiz feature I dont think you can do that with nova. At least you cant with stock nova. I dont know if someone can hack a way but I think they would have to tap into the spen sensor. Definitly not as easy as 123.
Damnit...so there wont be a mod or app or something I can install making it do that?

First thing I would do, is contact the nova launcher's author, he might be able to do something.
More realistically though, would be to look at something like the program Tasker and see if you can have it respond to removing the S Pen and then perform the task of opening the desired application. I'm using nova launcher also, and removing the S Pen does initiate a sound, so even though I'm not using TouchWiz, Nova is recognizing the S Pen's removal. I'm no Tasker expert, but this sounds like something it would do.

Contact the Nova dev. Let them know about the SPen SDK and tell them the feature you want them to add.

Thabks guys!! I will do just that! Ill look into tasker for the time being and ill see that hopefully it will work out!

You can get the S Note to open when you take out the S Pen. I this works with ADW Launcher EX, Nova Launcher/Prime, Apex Launcher/Pro, Go Launcher, Samsung's TouchWiz, etc...
From Home Screen > Menu Key > "Settings" > "S Pen" > add a check by "Open Popup Note".
Also remember that you can use the "Quick Command" with S Pen to do lots of things with. And you can customize the "Quick Command" too.
The only thing I find not working with other launchers, like ADW Launcher EX, Nova Launcher/Prime, Apex Launcher/Pro, Go Launcher, etc... is the Page Buddy. Developers out there, we would love to have and even pay for a Page Buddy that works with the other launchers.
It would be awesome if a Tasker app worked with the S Pen. Then you can customize actions to more S Pen behaviors.
Hello,
And do split-screen features work with alternative launchers ?
Thx for your answer.

If you're talking about multi-window, then yes, it works just fine with nova. I have nova prime and I use multi-window just fine. I also use Tasker and Secure Settings to set my phone up so that when the s-pen is removed, it uses the samsung keyboard handwriting mode, and when the s-pen is inserted, it turns it back to Swiftkey.

better keyboard?

so I'm coming from using Swype on Gingerbread and loved it.
Now that I'm using the Note 2, I've been using the Samsung Keyboard and not liking it as much, but I really like that the numbers are on the keyboard at the top without making any other presses.
Swype/Swiftkey both make you press a button to get to the numbers.
What I would like is a combination of the number keys at the top + swype style for everything else.
Any suggestions?
I think Kii Keyboard is exactly what you're looking for.
It's a new keyboard, currently in beta. But it works extremely well and the developers are improving it very frequently.
Get it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zl.inputmethod.latin
You can enable the swype features and number rows through the settings.
Enjoy!
Did I miss it or what? I couldn't find hand writing recognition.

Kii is pretty much just the 4.2 keyboard with customizations. Tried it, was nice, but nothing special.
I like the Swiftkey Flow beta myself. It was updated today with many bug fixes. Nothing like swiping out an entire sentence without lifting your finger or stylus. Working great!
Kii keyboard just updated yesterday, adding even more shortcuts to the keyboard, I would highly recommend it. It has both the swype functionality plus the number keys you are looking for. Plus I believe it's customizable user dictionary and autocorrect via space key make it leaps and bounds better than stock.

I think if you touch the Spen to the area that you want to enter the text, It will automatically enter the handwriting recognition mode. I know my device does this. I'm on chinese n7105 rom so that I can have multi window and wifi tether but I assume that most roms would have the same feature.

Samsung Keyboard IS Swiftkey???

Look in the settings. You can enable Swiftkey Flow. The predictive text and learning are there too. I think they just skinned it. Also, as pointed out in another thread here, Installing swiftkey seems to cause stuttering lag. Could it be a conflict?
I believe you can enable swype, which is similar to swiftkey flow, but not quite the same thing.

Interesting, I dont see that option. I see the option for 'continuous flow' but nothing referring to SwiftKey.

Really? Hrmmm Lemme get a screenie...
Samsung worked with swiftkey for their stock keyboard, but I believe it is mainly for the auto correct / predictive text and flow. You can definitely feel swift key behind it when you enable the auto replacement (auto correct) but it still won't type as fast as swiftkey, simply because of the punctuation, you cannot just slide your finger to get ! or ? easily .. you need to hold the punctuation key, and it takes forever for it to display the available punctuation. If the punctuation worked just as swiftkey, I wouldnt need it anymore.
Overall I think its a nice effort, but it is still not a real swiftkey. The ability to unbind the keyboard from the bottom and move it around is nice though.. wish swiftkey had that as well.
On my SGH-M919V , the swiftkey flow is called "Continuous Input"

Choosing Default Keyboard

Hi All,
Just switched from S4 to the ONE. Everything is great except for one thing that I've noticed. I don't mind the stock keyboard, but I prefer Swype a lot better. I installed Swype and chose it as default keyboard, however, upon reboot, the keyboard switched back to the stock keyboard. Anyone else experiencing this? If so, how did you fix this issue and choose the default keyboard as there is no option under settings and Language and Keyboards
I also had this problem and it looks like Swype is aware of it and are looking for the fix...
In the mean time.. After the reboot, open any method of typing ( I use the txt message window to any recent contact ) and once the keyboard is displayed, pull down the bar from the top (that has the time stamp). You will see a Choose input method box. Click on it and Select the Swype - Swype + Dragon option and you are back up and running. Happy swyping.
I switched to the Google keyboard because this was annoying me about Swype. I think the Google keyboard is actually better at swiping in general... Except punctuation. I also use "*" often and it's buried on the Swype keyboard.

First select the keyboard of your choice, disable fast boot (settings, power) reboot, check that you still have the desired keyboard, enable fast boot. It should persist after that.

Samsung keyboard dictionary

Does anyone know if we can access the note 8's keyboard dictionary to edit it and if so how do I get to it?
I don't see anything in settings like most keyboards.
life is better with r00t
I might be missing something too... but my biggest irritation with this tablet is its compulsive auto correct. I often find it'll change my word... So I go back and edit it, press space for the next word and damn it! It's been auto corrected again! F*ck you! Leave my spelling alone!
Anyone know how to adress this issue?

Samsung keyboard settings: disable Predictive Input
Hmm... but that disables predictive input entirely.
What I'm looking for, is that suggested words come up, but they aren't auto-corrected.... in other words, it leaves my spelling as is unless I actually select the suggested word.

Can't find such option in Samsung keyboard. If you are willing to switch, Swype has separate options for suggestions and autocorrect.

Swype has it's own handwriting recognition, never tested so don't know if it's better or not.
It is also possible to keep Swype as normal keyboard and Samsung handwriting for pen input - in one of the threads here someone suggested an app which automatically switches default keyboard upon pen removal, alas don't remember it's name.
Sent from my GT-N5100 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
I'm trying out Swype right now. Swyping is fast and accurate, and the Dragon dictation is nice, but the handwriting recognition sucks (poor recognition and predictability), IMHO. I don't find it much of a hassle to switch between it the Samsung and Google keyboards (due a glitch in the return key not working) by pulling down the the notification bar and chasing input method.

found it:
[App][Root] SPenBoardSwitcher 2 - Changing keyboards depending on the S-Pen Position:
Have you ever wanted to use a certain keyboard for normal use, and a different one for the S-Pen! This will ease your life.
- When the service is running, the pen's position is detected and the keyboard is switched to the learned or pre-defined one (depending on the mode).
- The service runs quietly and efficiently. No popups, no interventions.
- Support for starting on boot
- Service supports two modes:
Learning mode: Tries to detect the keyboard you use in each pen position, stores the detected keyboard, and uses it the next time you take your pen off, or return it to its place.
Fixed Mode: The service only uses the keyboards you chose inside the application, even if you use another keyboard for a short time, when the pen's position, the keyboard is reverted back to the ones you chose.
app in post #2, there's also donate version in Play Store
anyone able to edit user dictionary ... or import text file ... right now its learning from facebook and gmail but cannot import it by whatsapp ... software like User Dictionary manager show blank dictionary ... samsung note 2 n7100
