Sprint/4G LTE/Philly - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

For anyone in the philadephia area who's been waiting for 4G LTE with sprint, looks like we will have to wait even longer.
My job has about 30+ phones with sprint so the manager here emailed our Specialist and this was emailed back to us today 12/5/12
Good Morning xx,
After doing my research, The only answer I received is that the Philly market will be getting 4g LTE coverage in the upcoming months.
There is not a definite date, however it is launching soon.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any additional questions.

Wow that is whack. I. September when I got the phone they told late November or December. Now it may be even longer... smh. 3g blows in this area.. might have to call to see if they can work something out. Paying extra $10 a month for premium data which sucks cause Theres no 4g.

1. This thread will be locked soon. All LTE discussions go in the stickied thread.
2. Premium data fee has NOTHING to do with 4G, etc. Consider it your unlimited data surcharge.

It sure did when I bought my EVO 4G.

Damn, just got an S3 myself and was hoping their goal for having 4G in December would hold true.
Also the extra 10 dollars a month was definitely for 4g, remember this when I got my Shift.

The $10 "premium data" fee originally started rolling out on the NEWLY released 4G phones but Sprint was adamant that it was NOT a 4G fee. Those in the know at the time knew it would be rolled out to ALL smartphones after a time. (Which it is).
They will NOT waive this fee, however, they have been known to credit your accounts with "loyalty bonuses".
I to came from the OG EVo, then shift, then 3d joke phone, to this one.

Can't people see the sticky threads here??? Or the locked threads about LTE???

Correct. The $10 fee was originally for 4G, but after many complaints from customers who did not have 4G, they changed the terms of the fee to smartphone fee.

AT&T drops T-mobile bid - confirmed

I guess it's good news for us all.
Bring on DISH or Google!
Here's a link if anyone wants to see the official statement
WSJ reports this as fact YAY!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL ATT are insane. Look at this hype they have made:
“The actions by the Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice to block this transaction do not change the realities of the U.S. wireless industry. It is one of the most fiercely competitive industries in the world, with a mounting need for more spectrum that has not diminished and must be addressed immediately. The AT&T and T-Mobile USA combination would have offered an interim solution to this spectrum shortage. In the absence of such steps, customers will be harmed and needed investment will be stifled.”
Sure.
I'm thankful I get to keep my job! Now tmobile has to think of a crazy master plan. Google exclusive partnership please!

Google is almost not possible. They don't know about the wireless industry and they wouldn't become T-Mobile exclusive when the OS is on all carriers.
There is enough hate in the world. Why can't we all get along here ...?
Hallelujah. Sometimes prayers are answered.
Hmm... a roaming agreement... sweeeeeeeeeeeet, I can mooch of your 42mbps HSPA+ while mooching off AT&T's LTE.
Also, Google will NEVER make their OS exclusive to any carrier, and if they did, it would be Verizon... because Verizon is the biggest android carrier.
Anyways, happy for you guys, you get a few more months till someone else bids for T-Mobile.
Where can we find details on the roaming agreement? will we have 4g roaming?

So switch to ATT dude. Overwhelming majority of folks were disgusted by the thought of having the death star take over tmo. But there are instances where att is the best fit, such as your case. Sell your gs2, pay the etf and switch dude. Problem solved.

Future of WiMax

So now that Sprint is moving to the LTE standard, does this mean that WiMax will no longer be developed? I mean, i just signed a damn 2 year contract 3 months ago, and am paying an extra 10 bucks a month per smartphone for 4g service, which i was promised i would get in the future. The rep even told us that within a year WiMax coverage would encompass most of Sprints network.
Wimax will still be supported by Sprint. It's not like they can drop it entirely with an abundance of Wimax users on its network. I wouldn't expect widespread expansion of Wimax though since LTE is what's "in"
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Was on the phone with *2 today and while waiting i slipped that question in. The guy said that wimax will be supported for the life of all current devices

Ya, they are dropping Wimax. But, you won't be using this phone when it happens.
On my Epic mobile phone.
The 10$ fee is not a 4g fee. Even non 4g smart-phones come with the extra 10$.

It was never, ever called a 4G fee. It's always been called a Premium Data fee from the launch. The confusion comes from it initially only being charged on 4G phones (however, Sprint was always VERY careful to position it as a Premium Data fee for phones that Sprint expected to consume more data and to protect them from the complaints of 4G not being available in all areas).

The rep lied to you about wimax expansion. They will continue to serve wimax until all wimax devices have reached their "life expectancy" but lte is the new 4g standard. Enjoy your wimax device and by the time your contract is due to renew, Sprint will hopefully have a decent lte coverage area.

WiMax will continued to be supported until the absolute earliest they will turn it off; the end of 2015.
It is still a good technology for many things, and I could see them using and maintaing the network beyond that.
you wont be on LTE but you will have faster data speeds on 3g though when the towers are upgraded
Actually they called it that because Dan Hesse, Sprint's CEO said at CES that there would not be a surcharge for 4g data service.

according to engadget, and ceo of spint, they will support wimax until 2015, and phase it out of their network as lte gets in place. by 2013 they will offer lte- advanced. which is ten times faster then the current lte.
this does not mean there will be more expansion of wimax.. wimax is just a pit stop.

No, it is used to pay clearwire for 4g and to pay for network vision (4g).
In other words it is a 4g fee.

Mr. Fanboy, I am not referring to the Samsung Epic Phone itself, I am referring to 4g in general. The only reason I purchased a 4g phone in the first place was because my local sprint store claimed 4g would be in Omaha within a couple months....It never happened. So now I am paying for something incorporated into my bill that I cannot use. Now Sprint is switching to 4g lte which will inevitably rule my phone useless when it comes to 4g down the line. 4G is the biggest scam in the history of mobile data.

Mostly because they realized they would be required to give a refund if there was no 4G in your area...LOL. I think the salespeople were either misinformed or Sprint realized soon after that the new phones would still use the same amount of data just on 3G and they did not want to limit data like the other carriers.

what keeps you with sprint

hey everyone..what keeps you with sprint!? the unlimited data and any mobile is great, but the data speeds and lack of 4g or LTE are kind of annoying...so what keeps y'all with sprint?! I Love the aformentioned perks, but I think verizon 4g lte in my area may tempt me to switch
Well I created a new plan with sprint [was on parents' plan] and I could have went anywhere. I went with sprint cuz of the data prices, and the overall price wasn't bad. Not gona go to at&t and verizon and get raped with data. Also LTE coming to my area is supposed to be heavy, so we will see.
Its cheaper then the other carriers. I get full signal on sprint everywhere I go in my area. It actually has unlimited data

agreed. they can try to entice new victims to join them all they want but i dont see them lifting a finger to keep them. once they get a whiff of their horrible data speeds they are going to want out. hopefully it happens soon enough for them to get out of the contract.
they can cry "network vision" all they want. fact of the matter is that they should of been had a solid 3g network in preparation for the icrap, but they fell way short of that

In my area (Washington DC) sprints network is almost non existent. It's so bad it is literally unusable. wimax is ok but constantly drops out if you are moving. This just has to do with the origins of wimax I think.
I've tried T-Mobile and Verizon. T-Mobile ironically had both the most consistent coverage and fastest speeds, even faster in real world use than Verizon.
