[Q] KF to PC connectivity lost after ROM install (Recognized as different device) - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Noob to XDA so forgive if this post is in the wrong area. I am at my wits end.
I have screen shots but cannot get them to attach.
Kindle Fire to PC connectivity lost after ROM install (Recognized as different device GT-P1000) and I cannot install drivers to this device
The Good News, Bad News and Solution Attempts…
The Good News.
I installed the GedeROM CM9 ICS 4 (GedeROM ICS v4.04 CM9 Kernel v3.0.21) to my 1st generation Kindle Fire and it runs great. It is much smoother at running Air for Android with an App that I have been developing. The USB Host works great with my Logitech Wireless Keyboard and Mouse Combo with the OTG USB Dongle and Logitech nano receiver. I would like to keep using this ROM as it is very functional for my needs.
The Bad News.
Now, let’s get to the frustrating part. No more drag and drop. After the install, my PC no longer recognizes the it as a Kindle Fire as a drive or sdcard. It recognizes it as a GT-P1000 (Galaxy Tab P1000). Because of this mis-reporting to the PC device manager the KF and sdcard are no longer visible as a drive on the PC for me to browse, drag and drop items.
The Device Manager sees the
---Android Phone > Android ADB Interface
or depending on the driver
---Android Phone > Android Composite ADB Interface
and no where in the Device Manager does it show the Kindle Fire any longer.
The only place the device is listed is in
---Control Panel > Hardware > Devices and Printers > GT-P1000(!). (Unknown Device) And I cannot install drivers on this device.
Attempted Solutions.
1. Driver Reinstall(s) with and without SDK.
I tried reinstalling the drivers for the KF and this changed it from Android Composite ABD Interface to Android ADB Interface. (no luck) I reinstalled the Composite interface and still no KF. I also tried a few different versions of drivers up and down the spectrum trying to get this installed. Including trying to install a GT-P1000 driver from Samsung. Still no luck.
2. Android Debugging
I tried to turn on and off and on etc the Android debugging in Settings > Developer Options > Android Debugging. No Luck.
3. Turn on USB Mass Storage
Unable to do this as the options are simply just not there.
4. Reboots
Countless reboots (PC and KF) and cache wipes with and without the KF attached.
5. Different ROM
I tried a different ROM for Jelly Bean 4.2 and it was successful and recognized as a KF and I could browse to the folders on the sdcard. However this ROM was so striped down that it was not really functional for me as there was no file explorer, market app, or any way to browse to the sdcard to install any app that I could drag and drop into the sdcard in the hopes of installing a file explorer and market app. The issue seems to be with the GedeROM CM9 that I am using.
Am I going to have to try multiple ROMS until something works?
Specs:
Kindle Fire (1st Gen, spring of 2012, original one purchased in December 2011, but suffered screen smash)
GedeROM ICS v4.04 CM9 Kernel v3.0.21
The PC I am using is running Windows 7 Professsional.

Work Around Found... Sort of.
I have tried several different ROMS today.
I have found that they just dont have the stability and functionality that I like with the version that I am running. SO.... that being said, I found a work around. I can keep the existing ROM in place and if I need to copy something to the SD Card, I can just boot into TWRP and mount the USB drive, make the file copies and then reboot. It's a little annoying, but none so much as not being able to do it at all.
Thanks for the input.

Kindle Fire get ADB working device FOUND solution for KFU

Had been searching on & off over 2 months & finally found the sol
This now lets you use the KFU util and others to root & install new OS etc
You need to have installed ANDROID SDK and extras-usb & JAVA se
1)
you will need to modify the following two files:
a. adb_usb.ini – You can find it under your Users\YourUsername\.android folder
In a typical Windows 7 installation, adb_usb.ini will be located under C:\Users\YourUserNameHere\.android
Open the adb_usb.ini file with a text editor (Notepad is just fine) and add the following line at the end (on a new line). Save and exit.
0×1949
2)
android_winusb.inf – You can find it under the folder you installed the Android SDK, in my case C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver
Open the file with a text editor (notepad is again good enough), locate [Google.NTx86] section and also the [Google.NTamd64] section and add the following lines to each section, like in the screenshot.
;Kindle Fire
%SingleAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_1949&PID_0006
%CompositeAdbInterface% = USB_Install, USB\VID_1949&PID_0006&MI_01
3)
Note: If your device list is empty, maybe you plugged-in Kindle Fire before you installed Android SDK and Android USB Drivers. In this case you’ll need to force load the Android USB driver. Right click on My Computer and select Properties then navigate to Device Manager. Under Other Devices you should see Kindle with a yellow icon containing an exclamation point.
Right Click on Kindle name and select Update Driver Software. A Dialog will pop-up asking how do you want to search for driver software. Select Browse and point toward the folder containing Google USB Driver (in my case C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver). Select Next and proceed with the installation, choose Install this driver anyway when prompted.
Ok now you can
cd C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools
d. type adb kill-server followed by enter
e. type adb devices. If everything is fine, you should see a connected device (your Kindle Fire)
0000666665555 device
You are good to go

Congrats... glad to hear you got things working. It's nice to see a user's first post be a success story rather than a cry for help. I'm guessing KFU's driver installer didn't work for you for some reason and you had to do it this way.
This is going to be a day late and a dollar short in your case, but you might try it this way if there's a next time around...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23747671&postcount=2
You don't really have to install the SDK to get these drivers installed. You can get everything you need in the KFU distribution with the .inf and .ini files already edited for you. Good luck.
Device Not Found in ADB
Another way to fix the driver issue.
Uninstall driver from device manger. Select delete driver if the option is available.
Copy the driver file somewhere else on your computer
Delete the driver from the old location.
Attach the Kindle and manually install the driver from the new location.
I'm not sure why this worked for me, but after half a day of trying this worked.
This is what FINALLY worked for me

I found that this started to happen to me after some ROMs I was flashing ended up getting stuck on the bootscreen. I am not sure what I did in the process, but I messed up my USB drivers. Now no matter how I configure them. I can't seem to get the device to recognize. Even though both windows devices registers the Kindle, it still won't allow me file system access. No matter which rom I try flashing.. I find that nothing seems to work.
I am trying to now restore individual segments to see if I can atleast get a boot up.. otherwise I am dead in the water.
Any help?
Oh yeah, Fastboot.. works fine.. isn't there a stock image I can just fastboot Upgrade?
John
KF not recognized in PC. Shows up as GT-P1000 instead and sdcard access.

[Q] Need serious help

So I flashed my kindle about 10 months ago with a version of ice cream sandwich that I found on here and it runs great minus the lack of video and what not and some minor wi fi issues....however...I want to do more or even go back to the stock software but heres my problem....
When my kindle boots I get the kindle fire boot screen and then the ice cream sandwich boot screen..I don't get the fire fire fire screen....
My kindle will not mount no matter what I can think of or try it just won't mount...in fact it is not even recognized by windows It will charge if plugged into my computer but there is no software recognition...
Any ideas?
Also It does have TWRP in my file manager however it doesn't load.....
Here`s the problem multiple driver changes. Go to this folder in kfu C:\Users\user\Desktop\Kindle_Fire_Utility_v0.9.6\Kindle Fire Utility\drivers\kindle or whatever your path is to this folder. Find android_winusb.inf and delete it replace it with this one http://db.tt/vXXeuL10 then reinstall the driver. Plug your kindle in you should have adb back online again after windows updates the driver , if your on windows 7. Very frequently those who dont use adb never check to make sure it is still functioning after flashing a rom. Also make sure you have android debugging enabled in the rom itself.
No luck
I attempted exactly as you directed however still no luck. My computer doesn't know that there is anything plugged in...My kindle charges when plugged in however the computer doesn't show anything...It doesn't attempt to install anything and there is nothing in my device manager...I have even tried on Linux and it just won't mount or even appear on the computer. The tablet works still and I don't know if there is something I must do to the tablet to get it to let the computer see it..... I have debugging enabled and all of the USB options are correct.
Download a new rom to your kindle along with gapps and flash it from your download folder if you can access twrp. Or use adb push to send this to your kindle and flash it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1439916 If your having trouble with your recovery flash smirkit to replace it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1500935. Truthfully I`m still inclined to believe is your drivers or user error. You can run soupkit on ubuntu to save alot of hassle with drivers. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850038 Regardless I suggest doing a full wipe and replace your rom with the one I suggested.

[Q] No more Composite ADB driver after installing CM10.1

i have managed to sucessfully install a 2nd bootloader, TWRP Recovery, and CM10.1 onto my new KFHD with no apparent problems, following Hashcode's guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2128175.
I had already set up my system to support developing and debugging the KFHD, including the Amazon-specific Kindle Fire USB drivers; when plugged in, the device showed up in Device Manager as a "Kindle" with a "Composite ADB Interface", and `adb devices` detected the device.
After flashing the CM10.1 ROM I can no longer see my device as anything except an MPT USB Device, and `adb devices` says there are no devices attached.
I have tried both the Google USB drivers and the Kindle USB drivers and Windows claims that neither of them is correct for my hardware. When I check Device Manager, it says the attached device is VID_18D1, PID_6860, REV_0100, which doesn't match any of the device descriptors in either of the driver inf files.
Which driver am I supposed to be using now and how can I get it to install properly?
EDIT: I had forgotten to re-enable ADB Debugging on the tablet after flashing; now it is actually called an "Amazon Kindle Fire HD" and has a different device descriptor:
VID_18D1&PID_6861&REV_0261&MI_01
but still no love from ADB.
Thanks.
I'm having the same problem. No connection to ADB, and MTP only exists as a single file when activating the camera toggle. Frustrating to say the least, but not a deal-breaker.
Oh and a friend has the same problem. I know its not helpful, but atleast you're not the only one
That's really odd as adb works fine for me on Haschode's 10.1 Perhaps try reinstalling the drivers, The adb drivers are - click here
You may need to uninstall the old drivers before these work. Also, goes without saying that you need to enable USB debugging on the tablet!

I installed Hashcode CM10.1 for the first time tonight on an KFHD 8.9.
I have the same problem on both Windows and LINUX: loading CM10.1 on an HFHD8.9 tablet. (No ADB)
I use both every single day on both windows and LINUX so have lots and lots of experience.
In windows after installing 2nd boot /twrp and Hashcode zips (8.1.4.zip, or 8.4.1.zip) I have to use some old windows drivers for ADB and fastboot does not work at all. In LINUX, ABD and fastboot work for both Stock Kindle OS and all of Hashcodes Mod'd KindleOS.zips
If I load Hashcode's CM10.1, I have not ADB on Windows or LINUX ADB Devices shows 123456789ABCDE offline
Recovery shows devices = 123456789ABCDE Recovery
I can push files in Recovery but, not if the tablet boots into OS.
If I revert back to any one of the Hashcode KindleOS.zip images all is well at least in LINUX.
This issue is definately related to something driver wise in the CM10.1 OS.
Regards
I saw this same issue
I had this same issue after installing twrp and CM 10.1 as well. I was fortunate to have a second laptop that had not been used for this stuff before, and once i installed the adb drivers on that machine, had no issue connecting to the tablet from that machine. I still could not connect to it from the original machine. My guess would be to uninstall the ADB drivers from the machine you are using to connect, and reinstall. if that doesn't work, hopefully you have a spare machine, otherwise you might need to look at re-imaging you computer. I happen to keep a stock image file of my laptop in case of hard drive failure or other emergency, so it was about 20 minutes, and i was back up and running.

[Q] Kindle CM10.1 not connecting to PC

I've installed 2nd bootloader + TWRP + cyanogenmod for my kindle fire 8.9 hd, but now the device isn't showing up on my computer (windows 7 64bit.) It starts to install drivers but says "unidentified device" and fails. I looked around in settings on the actual tablet and couldnt find anything relevant. Is it possible I need to turn on adb debugging on the tablet again, and if so, where is it located in CM10.1?
I've tried rebooting and reinstalling adb drivers on my computer, but no dice.
It detects as a PTP device, but doesn't show up when I change it to MTP. adb devices doesn't list anything.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yeah I had that problem just a few days ago. Turns out you just go to the setting and about section and tap the build number a few times to enable the developers options in setting. Then you will be able to select adb debugging.

Sweet, that was really helpful. Now the device shows up in adb devices, but not in windows. I can't send or receive files.
This is really frustrating. You'd something something as simple as "how to connect cm10.1 kindle to computer" would be documented somewhere, but I cant seem to find it.

Sweet, that was really helpful. Now the device shows up in adb devices, but not in windows. I can't send or receive files.

Never had an issue not showing up in windows especially if the "adb devices" cmd now works in your windows. That seems odd. Maybe you should connect your kindle to pc and enter windows device manager under portable drivers and uninstall the kindle driver. Window will reinstall the driver once you disconnect and reconnect the kindle.
I have the exact same problem with my KFHD8.9 since I rooted and installed CM10 two days ago.
I also have Win 7 64, and I also can use it as PTP but not as an MTP (USB debugging is on).
I've tried installing and re-installing both ADB drivers provided here. Countless times I've tried to: reboot Kindle, restart my PC, removing unrecognized drivers in device manager and then reinstalling them when the Kidnle connects via USB.
I've even tried installing the Android SDK files with no success.
So far, I've spent more than 7 hours trying to fix this.
The closest I've gotton, was to manually direct the broken Kindle Fire HD driver in device manager to update via the ADB driver located in Program files (x86) folder- then it showed the kindle as being connected under the "safely remove hardware" icon in the notification area and showed as a working driver in device manager, but even then, the MTP won't work and won't show the Kidnle in my computer.
One of the most frustrating things about it is that I connected the Kindle to a 7 year old laptop we have and it was
recognized immediately in "my computer". So I know this means something is wrong with my laptop that
prevents it from being recognized.
Anyone have a suggestions? A solution?
After more than 7 hours trying to figure this out, I would really appreciate your help!
did you solve this?
I just flashed CM10.1 and have the same problem
Try this:
Disconnect kindle
Go to device manager
look for kindle
uninstall
connect kindle
I see that a1745 has tried something like this, but these USB drivers are really flaky. Worth a try.
You can also try toggling MTP mode.
Settings -> storage -> the 3 cube icon on the upper right -> USB computer connection -> and try toggling MTP.

Rooted KF not recognized (?) by PC

Hello,
I successfully rooted my Kindle Fire last year and a few months ago I decided to flash ICS on it. It worked perfectly and I've had no issues so far on it except for one thing that is driving me nuts.
I had downloaded a couple albums and a few magazines on my Kindle and I wanted to get them on my PC. So I proceeded to plug my Kindle as usual and I heard the USB sound on the PC. I checked My PC and my device did not appear there. I checked Device Manager and the ADB Composite thing did not appear either, it now says Amazon Kindle Fire with the yellow exclammation mark.
I suppose somehow the drivers got uninstalled or something, so I tried installing the drivers again... Which is another nightmare because first of all, I'm on Win XP and my computer is in Spanish. So when I double click on the drivers thing it doesn't work. And now when I try to manually install the drivers it won't let me.
I have no idea what to do now, maybe someone can help me with this. I'll be so grateful for any help you guys can give me! :crying::crying:

Trish: First, I am presuming you are working with a first gen Kindle fire?
I am pretty sure the problem is that the cm10 build is not using the 0x1949 kindle vendor ID and your drivers do not know what to do.
I am not entirely sure how to modify your USB driver ini files but, if you were to install something like USBDview, which lists usb attachments to your PC or, if you were in LINUX for certain and listed the syslog (which prints out all activity on ports basically), you would see a USB connection each time the tablet is connected but, the VID is no 0x1949 but, 18D1. 1949 is the VID for Kindle and I was told that 18D1 is the VID for google devices.
If your PC was set up and configured to work with google devices, I think you would be OK.
I had one person indicate their machine was configured to recognize either Kindle on Google Vendor IDs.
C:\Users\"your user name"\.android\adb_usb.ini
The file normally has 0x1949 listed in it which is the VID for Kindle.
Once cm10 is loaded the VID may no longer 0x1949.
I once tried to add 0x18D1 to the .android/ adb_usb.ini file located in the users base folder but, I did not have any better luck.
This issue happens quite a bit and there are lots of posts indicating that the PC will not recognize the tablet after loading one rom or another or just getting the tablet into one boot mode or another.

Thank for your response. I wasn't running CM10 on my KF 1st gen when I had this USB problem. To be honest, I don't even remember what's the name of the ROM I was running. All I have to say is that it was a very poor ROM, very unstable and it was missing a lot of features. For instance, when I went to Settings > Storage I would have no option to turn on the Mass Storage option.
I was so frustrated with this USB issue since I couldn't find a solution or help anywhere, so I decided to flash CM10.1 on my KF and now I have a very stable tablet. When I first tried to connect it to the pc after flashing, the PC didn't recognize it either. But at least I have the mass storage option in Settings > Storage.
Either way, the PC still doesn't recognize my tablet as an Android Phone. But I can get files from my KF to PC and vice versa.

Some ROMs just don't seem to work with Windows PCs. The latest CM/SG7 one works fine (early versions did not, the ones from around May going forward do). If all else fails, I've never had an issue getting USB to connect when using TWRP's option. A minor inconvenience, but there it is.

This has been talked about several times, but for some reason no one ever seems to catch on.
You have to check the hardware IDs reported by your device in the Device Manager for every ROM you install, and make sure the information matches whatever is listed in your 'adb_usb.inf'.
