Best Buy insurance vs. TEP? - Sprint LG Optimus G

So, I still have a bit of time to decide between going with the Best Buy insurance or stick with TEP. Thoughts?

I mean literly a 3 minute Google search on both gives you a straightforward answer than what I can give you here...
But if choosing between the two, choose the Sprint TEP.
Best buys geeksquad protection plan only offers 3 replacements, and doesn't cover spills, drops, etc, unless you opt for the premium plan.
The plus side is there's no deductible, but a large upfront cost.
Sprint TEP is a addition to your monthly bill, and covers you against any and everything.
I've had a hardbricked Photon 4G replaced.
It does have a deductible of $15 however.
So it really depends on how clumsy you are.

$150 what?
Best Buy told me it would be $10/mo vs $11/mo for Sprint. But the big thing was the deductible.

$150 deductible.
I'm on the sprint employee plan, and I don't really pay for it.. So I can only assume he's correct.
I would really advise on not going with the Best Buy plan if you're developing, or want to try many custom Roms.

Oh, does BB not cover you if the phone is magically bricked or the like?
The reason Im leaning towards BB was the no deductible for things like cracked screens and water damage.

BY most definitely covers bricked phones.
Sent from my LG-LS970 using Tapatalk 2

I always go with best buy, No Deductible, you can pay per month. I can replace no mater what I do. I will never go with Sprint insurance again.

Yeah, BB for me. They cover drops and there's no deductible. Sprint plan seems pricey if you have to replace your phone....$150 is not cheap on top of the the money your already paying per month.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app

Yeah, but what I personally understood is that they only replace phones 3 times, then you're SOL. I also understood that you needed a premium plan.
But go with whatever you feels best for your situation. I'm fortunate enough to have a father who's an employee and receives free phones once in awhile. I have no reason to use BB, and probably never will.
But that's just my situation.
Sent from my LG Optimus Prime G

Let's assume you don't know anyone that works for Sprint.. BB premium is about $10 or $11 a month. The biggest difference from what I've read is that Sprint will replace a lost/stolen phone. With the deductible (I believe, correct me if I'm wrong). And BB has no problem if your phone is rooted or unlocked. Not sure about Sprint.
Just my 2c. I don't personally have either but I'd get BB.

Sprint usually never has a problem with unlocked phones.
Not just from a personal experience, but from reading other threads over time.
Though it is a unwritten rule that you should flash a stock Image and relock / unroot your phone before getting it replaced for best results.

Stopped by BB tonight and signed up for the Geek Squad protection. Paid the $170 up front for 24mo of coverage rather than month to month at $10 for a total of $240. Supposedly, I can get a prorated refund if I decide to cancel.
Gonna try out the app they provided that will supposedly lock and locate the phone. Curious if it will cause any sorts of wakelocks or things.

Actually i.prefer and use wirefly insurance. 7'95$ a month and zero money to replace phone. Way better than sorints 100$ that i was told would.be refunded when i lost my mopho and when.i.found it and sent it in got no refund.of.the 100$ as usual sprint lied too me.

[Q] Sprint Contract changes???

I'm picking up my GS3 on Thursday, but unsure whether to get a new contract or stay out of contract. Both have pros/cons and of course financial considerations. When I got my family "Everything 1500" plan 4 years ago it was a good deal then as it is now. Going forward the family "Everything 1500" plan is the same one that is offered and ideally what I would get? Anyone know if there are any changes or variances in the new contracts?
I have the same plan and just renewed my contract. The plan stayed the same.
____________
Just Flash It !!!
The plan is the same except for $10 premium data, TEP is changing to $11 for new LTE devices, and $150 deductible. There are a lot of little things here and there but overall it's the same. You could change insurance to the $4 a month plan which covers defective devices but not lost are stolen phones. Still a really good price over other plans imo.

The deductible refers to if you lose your phone or what not, break your screen in half and they have to eat the cost of the first phone (whether getting it back in terrible physical condition or not at all) and replace it with a new phone.
Just the same for car insurance, when you bring in your car and it needs repairs, if you have a $500 deduct and the total bill is $1500, you pay $500 and the insurance pays the rest.
Hope that clears that up logically,

Its the new deductible cost of replacing a "smart" phone . Changes were made earlyer this year from Sprint.
I had to call them to activate the phone: the online system would not let me activate on the everything 1500. The operator even tried her best to activate the phone without charging me any more for insurance on it, poor girl. $1 bump in insurance from my OG Epic, no big deal.
i have a ton of freebies like 5pm nights..pick 6, free incoming minutes, etc
I always talk with a live person and make sure none of the add ons will fall off before activating a new phone
I have activated 3 phones in the last 12 months without any issues that way
you have to do a "manual activation" rather than "automatic"
I usually, only, speak with tech support in activating my new phones since they are more knowledgeable from my experience

I went with the best buy insurance. There is no deductible but they do not cover lost or stolen phones. Plus if you pay for the full 2 years at once they give you a discount. I believe it came out to $170, which is about $7 a month.

This is the number 1 reason I went with Sprint's TEP.
Worst case, I pay $150 for a new phone, and if it an actual hardware issue (not water or something "I" did) Sprint replaces it for free.
I got a replacement ET4G (bad GPS), and 2 replacement Samsung Moments (Bad USB Ports) all for free. Also got a replacement moment when it was less than 2 months old (stolen) for $100.
IMO, if you don't have some sort of insurance on your phone, you're nuts.
over two years with insurance if you file a claim, you will spend $414. if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
personally, i have two children under three years old that throw objects very well. that includes cell phones laying around, so i have insurance on it
if you break your phone without insurance the phone will cost $549.
YOu're forgetting phone prices come down substantially after the first 6 months...
Personally I have only needed insurance once... paid 150 deductible for what would have cost me at most $200 to buy off ebay/craigslist for the same 'used' phone. Could have saved myself the year of premiums.
Didn't buy the insurance on the S3...remember manufacturer defects are still covered under it's warranty as well. (Though I don't recall how long that is just now... 90 day, or 1 yr).

I opted out of insurance. I got the HD2 a month before it was released when I worked for t-mobile and just recently sold it when I bought this phone through sprint. I just go out of my way to be careful wIth a phone.

Personnal preference is squaretrade. Wait for a 30% discount and it will be $95 for two years of coverage
Insurance, isnt always for you. its a given that youll be babying your phone. it covers the world around you. Sprint - Asurion TEP bills your cellphone to your account at your request. the only caveat is that its 150 dollar every claim deductable. im replacing my galaxy s3 in an insurance claim and since its so new its still currently on backorder. but they say itll take 5-7 business days. normally if you get your claim in before 10pm you get a new device out within 24 hours. its quite nice when it works as it should.

Phone insurance?

Hey guys,
I'm a note 1 user and i'm getting a note 2, either the unlocked or the AT&T model.
Every phone i got, I either utilized the carrier's insurance for 7-8 dollars a month, or for my last phone, I bought it at best buy, so i used their insurance which is about 10 dollars a month but there is no deductible when you need a new one, whereas carriers charge 1-200 deductible.
But, best buy's insurance doesnt cover loss or theft..
Aanyway, does anyone know of any good third party insurance where you can buy the phone anywhere and then sign up for the insurance, does that exist? I dont know much about buying phones unlocked but when you guys spent 700+ dollars on this phone did you buy protection from somewhere? what happens if you break it?
Thanks

So i called up and asked alot of questions, it seems pretty good. They dont cover loss, but then again, neither does best buy, and it is verry cheap.
you only pay 64 dollars for up to 599 worth of coverage. They will only pay whatever the phone is going for at the time you file the claim, but still..
So, i buy the note 2 either unlocked or att off contract for about 700, the plan will cost 64, and a year later i want to buy the note 3, i cash in for about 500, i pay another 50, so i end up with 450 in my pocket, about 390 in reality... not bad..
and its good all around because i may end up breaking the phone because i dont use cases..
they do insurance for cameras, laptops, tablets.... this may be the way to go..
do you have any experiences you can share?
Here are the things I like about Carrier coverage:
Covers EVERYTHING (including loss)
Overnight delivery of your phone
This is what I dislike:
High deductible (Sprint) = $100 for screen breaks and loss.
I am most likely transferring to AT&T but wondering if I should get something that includes my likes and if possible fixes my dislikes. Is there anything out there?

Dude! That's ridiculous! Why the hell would you pay 10 bucks a month and then $200 for a phone claim? I know that it may be Asurion raising the price of the deductible but thats just stupid.
You might want to check out Square trade. Fair pricing and good reviews on claims. I've never had to file a claim.

Why is anyone using carrier insurance? Go to squaretrade... now!
I'm looking to get the Galaxy Note II either with Sprint but I'm curious if the $200 deductible will hold true for it because currently the fine print (http://www.phoneclaim.com/doc_list/...ble-schedule-061712?tmpl=component&format=raw) shows it currently excludes tablets (even though Note is technically a phone with tablet abilities).
I love the squaretrade option so far and will probably end up going with it but I'm curious if anyone knows about the deductible rates with Verizon for lost/stolen for the upcoming Galaxy Note II. I know they both have Asurion but I'm pretty sure they didn't raise deductibles like sprint, $11 is a killer especially if you don't end up using it. I've been paying $8 for over 2 years and never had to use the insurance, so it would have been nice to get it refunded for taking good care of my phone.
Also, it's very unclear whether the deductible applies to specific repairs/damage. My experiences have always been that I never had to pay deductible unless it was stolen/lost, but some people are saying that water damage or glass damage now requires deductible, etc..
If it weren't for Sprint's Google Voice Integration (use it too heavily to try workarounds, biggest caveat is ensuring my calls always show callerid from my would-be Sprint-2-GVoice ported number), getting a free femtocell tower, and employee 25% off discount, I would seriously consider Verizon for 2 years until Sprint gets their LTE + Advanced going. Insurance is the big factor that might make me switch, but I'll probably lose their coverage and go with squaretrade and just be extra careful to not lose my phone. However, Is limited great coverage and data speeds > unlimited delayed LTE and typical 1 mbps 3G speeds?
Hope softbank helps make Sprint LTE deployment significantly faster.
It's still a phone and should be covered under TEP with no issues. It will fall under the new higher monthly insurance fee, plus incur the much higher deductible. For the first time I am seriously considering outside insurance, instead of Sprints TEP coverage.

$250 for a deductible with TEP is EXTREME. Does anyone know what AT&T's pricing structure for their service is?
Sprint appears to have a Deductible Schedule. So far, I don't see $250 for any phone, but I only tried the Galaxy S3 is $150 and the og EVO is $100.
I also didn't realized they have a Total Equipment Protection (covers loss) and an Equip Replacement plan.

I use "I take extreme care for my devices and know how to fix them should something happen to them insurance" for all insurance companies rip you off. I'll tell you my story with my HTC touch pro 2 that I had gotten replaced via insurance.....
(Short version)
Phone flew down steps landed on concrete floor. Turned into confetti.
Called asurion. 100 bucks for deductible. After paying over 200 in monthly bills.(could have bought a brand new one from eBay for 150 at the time, didn't realize this till after I replaced it)
Got replacement, didn't work. Got second replacement. Still didn't work. Got third replacement(was extremely pissed by now) and ripped apart both 2nd replacement and 3rd and combined all the good parts to make a good phone.
And ever since then, I will never waste my money on insurance for my phone. It's nothing but a waste of money.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Ya I understand all that lol. But I go out and camp, fish, go boating, drink, and house parties and what not (immature 23 year old) so I've used my insurance a few times; once with my G1 (stolen) twice with my MyTouch 3G (stolen, and then dropped which caused a weird ear piece sound while on call). So I like insurance and haven't been screwed over. Never had any issues with my G2X or the S3 so I've grown up a little and love my phones more now, haha.
I was going to ask the same thing but given that you asked it already, I'd like to see other responses. So far I've only had SquareTrade Warranty on multiple devices. I still haven't had to file a claim but the thing that I like is if I sell one of my devices, I can cancel my plan and get a prorated refund. I'm not sure if other companies do that.
I recently got my Samsung Galaxy S3 and haven't made a decision on what company to choose. Ensquared is cheaper and they claim to cover theft and accidental, all for $59 for 1 year. If anybody has dealt with them, can you please give us some insight?

with coupon codes its $66.20 a year for $2000 in coverage unlimited usage and $25 deductible.
Covers damage and theft but not loss then again if its lost IT IS stolen so file a police report.
sprints TEP is $11 a month in other words $132 a year AND the deductible is $200 !!! and IIRC you can only use it once a year (I could be wrong on that)
I think worth without coupon code is $75 a year or something like that. way way cheaper and better than sprints tep and it covers all your toys (I have all my phones my laptop and my camera's on it)

your right sorry

Sprints coverage has 2 parts. One is insurance and the other is tep. The insurance is from asurion, you pay 200 and they ship you a new phone and you get it by the next business day. The tep which is total equipment protection is used whenever you have a problem with your phone that isn't covered under warranty anymore. For example if your speaker goes out they will fix it for free or if like me your screen starts messing up they will get you a whole new phone. If not for that then I would have to take the Samsung warranty and they ask that you mail it to them, wait while they fix it and then they ship it back. It can take from 2 to 3 weeks. Sprint will still check your phone but fixing it will cost 35 or more I believe. I think its 8 for insurance and 5 for tep, but I believe the insurance used to be 6. Not quite sure about any of this as it is just off the top of my head. I do know that the 11 or 13 package has 2 parts.

Best buy covers absolutely everything except lost or stolen. Unlimited claims and no deductible! They order you a new phone and give you a loaner If you need one. As far as lost or stolen, if you have their geek squad, there is a free app called locked And found that tracks where your phone is and takes pictures of what it sees with the front facing camera (a thiefs face maybe?) and reports to a website only you have access to.
For those who have the protection plan get a hold of your gsp# off your receipt because the app asks for it, or call best buy mobile.

The best buy program is junk. I had it and tried to get it fixed while traveling. First of all the replacement store would only give me a loner if I was able to return it to the same store. Now someone traveling like I was is screwed plus the loner was any phone not the same phone. The second issue was they said my phone wasn't broke enough because my problem was intermittent. They actually told me to go back to the parking and break the screen then they would replace it.

Not trying to be a argumentative but I don't think your complaints are valid.
1) I understand requiring you to return to the same store is not as convenient as possible... but creating the infrastructure to manage inter-store returns for loaner require technology investments which would surely increase the cost of insurance. Besides, most insurance programs don't even have this feature. It's inconvenient for travelers but making accomodations for such cases may not necessarily be worth the investment.
Also, loaners are temporary. To match your phone... and everyone else's, best buy must have at least one of every phone ever, for each store. (At least within the last two years). Do you expect them to open a new box everytime they dont have a matching loaner availabe?...assuming they even have them in stock?
As per your second complaint I don't know what the problem was, but bb doesn't automatically do replacements. .. instead will do repairs on fixable problems. Correct me but I believe that's what happened. They offered to do a repair but you wanted a replacement.
I think the only thing you can criticize bb for is they were asking you to commit insurance fraud.
swyped all these spelling errors from my galaxy note 2

its not even insurance. its a protection plan. similar, but not the same thing. i dont know if you can call it insurance fraud unless it is underwritten by an indemnity company.
that being said, you are correct, sir.
Sprint TEP + Kaspersky One, insurance and the ability to track, lock and wipe your phone.
You can also take pictures of the person using it.
It's win....
I dumped sprint insurance after having it on multiple phones for over 8 years. Monthly charge and deductible for the note were way too high for me. I switched to ensquared (or something like that)
