Root guide for Byond MI Book MI3 (CWM recovery and ROM DUMP included)

First things first:
1. Rooting essentially means you are fiddling with the installed OS. This may at times turn ugly and may result in permanent bricking of your phone (simple terms: your device will be dead, wont boot up).
2. Most companies do not entertain warranty claims for a rooted device, obviously because you have unlocked their software.
Ready to take the above risks?? Read On:

ROOTING GUIDE:
1. Charge your device to 100%
2. Go to settings/development and check the USB debugging mode to : Enabled.
3. If you have never ever connected your device to PC, connect it via USB cable. You will see that the drivers for your device will get installed.
4. Download UnlockRoot Pro v3.2 (free version) from : http://www.unlockroot.com/download.html
5. Run UnlockRoot.
6. Click root device on left panel of the UnlockRoot UI.
7. Wait till it says : your device is rooted.
8. Your device 'may' restart. Let it restart.
9. Check for 'Superuser' app in your app drawer.
10. Can you see 'Super User' app?? Congo!! Your device is now rooted.
Hey Wait !! Since you are now rooted. You can now install ClockWorkMod recovery on your device. With all the tinkering you will now do on your device, since its rooted, it becomes very important to install a 'System Backing up' tool on you phone. Every time you want to fiddle with your system, make a back up of your entire device (includes OS/Settings/Apps/Data) on an external SD card; so that if something goes wrong, you can restore your backup and your device will be good again (just like recovery point system in Windows OS).

INSTALLING CWM and MAKING BACKUP.
1. Be doubly sure that your phone is rooted and charged to 100%.
2. Download CWM.zip file from the attachments at the end of this post.
3. Transfer the CWM.zip file to the external memory card on you device, with the help of USB cable.
4. Switch off your device.
5. Press power + volume (-) button together until you see an android logo. The moment you see the logo, release the buttons.
6. You will next see an android bot logo, with his heart ripped and and exclamation mark on it. He's heart broken that you are fiddling with him.
7. Dont freak out. Now press volume (-) button again and you will see the default recovery manager.
8. Scroll down by pressing volume (-) button, to 'install zip from ext card' option.
9. Select this option by pressing volume (+) button.
10. A new window will open.
11. Scroll down to install from 'external storage' option. Press volume (+) button to select.
12. A new window showing all contents of your SD card will come up.
13. Scroll down and select CWM.zip file. Press volume (+) button to select.
14. The zip will get installed. A new windows will open up showing the CWM recovery manager.
15. Congo !
16. Now lets take 1st backup of your System. Scroll down to backup/restore option and press power button to select.
17. Scroll down to backup and select. Backing up will start. Once finished you will be redirected to the home window of CWM.
18. Now. Scroll down to reboot system option. Press POWER button to select.
19. Your system will shut down. Manually boot up your device again.
* Be careful with the controls for 'scroll' and 'select' in default and CWM recovery. Both are different. Follow the above instructions carefully. * Every time you want to back up/restore your system you have to repeat the above steps. I have not flashed the default recovery with the CWM, so that you always have the stock recovery working, in case everything else fails.

TO RESTORE A SYSTEM IMAGE YOU CREATED EARLIER WITH CWM.
1. Follow steps 1 - 15 in the above tut.
2. Once you are in CWM recovery. Scroll down to backup/restore option and press power button to select.
3. Scroll down to 'Restore' option and select.
4. Choose the backup image you want to restore. Press power button to select.
5. System restore will start and finish.
6. Reboot.
Always do a backup before you try to uninstall any system app. Never uninstall any app about which you are not sure, what it does. Follow your gut feeling.

Does the stock recovery gets totally replaced wen u flash with CWM or can u revert back to stock recovery later if needed?
Also can u create a flashable zip file or tpt of the stock recovery? It would be great.
Sorry I m a noob dont know anything about android development but just basics of rooting and flashing.

Yes. The stock recovery will get replaced if u flash with a flashable CWM image. Working on the same. Will post soon

Thanks mate. I skipped to give u credit for the root guide, simply coz I just discovered it late and you posted earlier than me. I was trying super one click root and several other scripts before discovering the unlock root option. Will update my post with credit to you soon.

ROM DUMP FOR MIBOOK MI3 not working

Android 4.0.3 ICS
1.2 GHz Processor
1GB RAM
I couldn't sign into Google accounts using my Mibook mi3 tablet. It said "Cannot establish a reliable connection to the server. This could be a temporary error or your device is not provisioned for data usage."
I use wifi and the connection is stable. I can browse the internet well. I tried factory resetting and getting the same error.
I cannot add Accounts in accounts and sync tab in settings as well.
So i rooted and tried to flash it with the stock flash in the thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2086957) hoping to resolve it.

But the stock flash is not working. It gives an error in the beginnig itself. I re-downloaded and tried it again which did no good.
Please help me getting round the problem. Please send me a link to the stock flash or is it ok to flash it with ICS ROM. If OK please send me a link to ICS ROM.

This problem has been occuring in all mi3 tablets. I had contacted ByondTech Customer Support.
NO NEED TO ROOT TABLET FOR THIS PROBLEM.
They emailed me an update patch which again enabled Google Account access.
update.zip
Select and apply the update.zip file. [For steps check the first post for applying CWM. Similar steps just instead of CWM.zip here file name is update.zip]
Reboot and then you will be able to access Google AC, Play Store, Gmail, etc.

yup, this works, but first i had to make sure that the ADB interface works from my desktop when MI book was connected in debug mode

Byond Mi1 - Lying Android Bot with exclamation mark
Hello,
my topic doesn't fit perfectly, but after pressing the home and power button on the Mi1 for a few seconds, I have an Android Bot lying on his back with an exclamation mark above him.
Since the Mi1 has only a power button, a home button and a reset button, I don't know how to get it out of this state. If anyone has experienced this, and has a cure, I would be more than happy to hear about it.
I went to the local Byond support center, but they were actually not a support center anymore, they said. And searches on the net only found the same questions, but no answers. Before I try to run to other support centers in the bigger cities, I would like to try my luck here.

[Q] Repair platform.xml?

Hi folks,
I tried to modify the platform.xml file to enable some write permissions. As far as I can tell, the app I used to modify the file didn't write it back correctly, and now my device is what might be called "semi-bricked."
Almost everything force closes, WiFi and write permissions seem to be broken, and I can't seem to get my Galaxy Nexus to communicate with my PC via USB.
I tried booting into CWM and mounting some /system, but I'm not sure how to access it since fastboot/adb don't seem to recognize the device.
I've also booted into some sort of recovery (fastboot?) that looks like the attached image. But I can't get it to do anything except boot up into the normal OS when I click the power button.
Any suggestions on how I can get access back to my device so I can repair/replace the platform.xml file and restore functionality to my phone?

No it is not bootloader. to access to the bootloader turn on your device long pressing power, volume up and volume down buttons together (don't use odin).
To access to cwm recovery from bootloader just press volume down button until you see "recovery" option, then press power button and it will boot in recovery.
which rom are you using?
solution: download the zip file of your rom and extract the file you modified, make a zip (if you can't make a flashable zip i'll post an attachment for you) and flash it in recovery

Thanks for the reply.
I actually did manage to get my PC to recognize the device via USB/adb and I copied the file back to the way it should have been. But that didn't fix anything, so I ended up doing a wipe/factory reset. Everything works now but things still seem a bit. . . off. For instance, it takes a while after my phone boots up before the WiFi will actually connect. It used to be connected almost immediately. And it takes a while for the alarm icon to load/show up in the notification area at the top. And I can't find the option in the settings anymore to use USB debugging. There are lots of little things like that, where it works, but it just doesn't quite work like it used to. . .
And to answer your question, I'm using the stock ROM that came with the Galaxy Nexus (from Google Play Store).

first: to make the "developer settings" appear go settings/About phone and tap on build number 7 times (google has hidden it in 4.2).
said that, you can:
1) fix permissions in cwm recovery (under advanced menu)
2) download a zip of your rom and flash it in recovery
3) if your bootloader is unlocked (you see a padlock when you boot your phone) you can flash a factory image to return completely stock.
4) if your bootloader is locked you can follow the 3) method but you will lose all your sdcard data.

I got developer settings to appear. Hooray! Fix Permissions is one of the first things I did to try to repair the platform.xml file when things were broken. I ran it again (but from ROM Manager rather than from CWM Recovery) and it didn't seem to have any effect on the weird sluggishness when first booting up.
My bootloader is unlocked. Will I have to root again if I flash one of those factory images? I'm currently backing up the contents of my "SD card" in case I have to completely wipe the entire thing.

well, you can firstly try to flash a zip of your rom (search on xda or google), it should fix.
the fastboot flash method is the google method so you won't need root (you just have to go into fastboot and connect your phone to your computer, doesn't matter if you have root, or a different rom/kernel/recovery).
If you don't know you to flash from fastboot try first to flash the rom zip.
having a backup of the sdcard is always a good idea :good:, i have 2 backups of mysdcard on 2 different hard drives of my computer and the pictures i take with the camera are automatically uploaded on my dropbox .

Weird things are happening. I was making a backup of the "SD Card" and partway through, things stopped copying over. And pretty much everything got erased from it. No big deal, since I'd already copied the important stuff first.
But CWM Recovery won't flash the zip file. It keeps telling me the update failed. I verified the hash on the zip I downloaded and it is the same as what is listed on Google's site. But it just won't flash in CWM.

wait, are you in cwm recovery o just in stock recovery (they are different)? have you previously installed a cwm recovery using fastboot? which zip are you trying to flash?
edit: ok you know what is rom manager so i think that you are in cwm.

I was in CWM Recovery. I was using the zip file that I extracted from the link you gave me for Google's stock ROMs (I can't post external links yet):
(Factory Images "takju" for Galaxy Nexus "maguro" (GSM/HSPA+) (with Google Wallet) --> Android 4.2.1 (JOP40D))
Strangely enough, after "failing" to flash the zip, I had to log into my Google account again because I had selected the option to Wipe Data and Cache, and most things seem to be working very well again. One odd thing I'm still noticing, though, is that some things don't seem to be syncing properly. For example, if I archive some of my email in the Gmail app, then log into Gmail on my PC, the mail is still unread in my inbox. My phone downloads the new mail just fine. But the changes I make on my phone (reading, archiving, deleting, etc.) don't seem to be syncing to anywhere else.
I'm downloading the zip you suggested. I'll give that a try. Thanks!

That is not a flashable zip! It is a factory image, it must be flashed via fastboot using a computer.

Just to be sure I explained myself clearly, I downloaded that Google provided factory image (a .tgz file) and inside it I found a zip file named "image-takju-jop40d.zip" which is what I tried to flash.
That said, I've just recently finished downloading the one you just suggested to me and I will give that one a try soon. Thank you again for your help. I really appreciate it.

I got it working again. The ROM you gave me failed signature verification in CWM Recovery, but I told it to install anyway and it worked. Thank you.
The problem I was having with Gmail not syncing was that I used Titanium Backup to restore my data, but because all the data from my "SD card" got erased, Titanium Backup itself lots its settings, so my Device ID was different. I guess Gmail relies on the device ID for syncing.

Glad i helped you. well this is one of the reasons why i don't restore data with titanium (especially system data).

To fully reset and install a clean rom using fastboot you have to extract the bootloader-blabla.img and radio-blabla.img files from the tar.gz archive and then extract the 4 .img files inside the zip (that is inside the tar.gz) and flash this 6 .img files connetting your phone in bootloader mode to your computer and using fastboot in terminal (in fact this procedure reinstall the recovery too).

Hey guys im trying to root my device so i can install some lightweight custom roms. Ive been following this guide i found online

In Odin, find the PDA tab and click it
Find the clockworkmod.tar.md5 file in the unzipped recovery image file
Press start to begin flashing the recovery mod
BE PATIENT! and wait until your device reboots
Once your device has fully rebooted, you can start installing root
It loaded on the phone fine. I then did this
Installing Root
Transfer the root.zip file onto your phone from your computer
Make sure you connect your s3 to your computer and find the root zip file and put it in your downloads folder.
Enter clockwork recover mod by holding down the volume up, power, and home buttons
Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home

apply update from ADB

wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!

Sounds like the root method you are using is just way to complicated. Follow this one here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426 it has prerooted firmwares that you just install with odin and you are done (cwm included). Just make sure you grab the right firmware for your carrier.

Beauty I think its flashing the rogers rom to my phone from there Im good to load other roms using this odin tool? (or is it rom manager?)
also what is this clockwork mod ? I might as well go into play store and get both rom manager and clockwork?

So After I flashed the new rom to my phone i left it plugged in and it restarted. Android loader popped on and now it says android is upgrading... starting apps. Its been like this for over a half an hour... what do i do??? helpppp dont really want to reset it but it is bricked? or do i have to reload ?
update:
held the restart button down it restarted bit is still stuck on starting apps.
update two:
held vol down home and reset tried to reload the rogers rom onto the phone and now it stops at samsung load screen. Do i have to reload the carrier that came with the phone? I cant quite remember what the original carrier was.

I as able to boot back into the phone but...nothing changed? i ended up wiping the phones data in settings because its too full as it is. I downloaded root checker and it said access was denied ? That makes its not rooted after all... I followed the directions seems that they didnt take? Any clues?

Okay buddy looks like you need to learn some basic android 101
You are definitely not ready to root or do anything til you learn this stuff...
Okay, so first is recoveries. Basically recoveries are a bit of software that let's you flash ROMs, kernels, and whatever else to your phone. When you hold volume up and power when your phone is off, you boot to recovery. Now basically recoveries are necessary because when you are flashing a new ROM it essentially deletes the android system from your phone first so this is a way of your phone still working between flashes.
Clockworkmod is a custom recovery with a lot of features meant for flashing ROMs. There are competitors such as TWRP (team win recovery project) but clockworkmod is a great starter. Use videos or tutorials on how to use it before you flash your first ROM. I can not stress how often you need to read read and read some more.
Okay so rooting your phone. Basically there is a "root" directory of your phone. Its where all the system files are stored and it let's you do a lot of stuff, but it also means you can screw a lot of stuff up to (like really screw it up). On default you are locked out of here by the maker of your phone for various reasons. Rooting means that someone found an exploit to gain access to this folder. Usually what you then do is you find a way to inject superuser (a little app that gives root access to other apps later on). You use Odin in this case to install a stock Samsung rom (with superuser already put in the root directory of that modified ROM its installing) essentially this means you have root. Root allows you to install recoveries like clockworkmod (which you need to flash ROMs later.
Okay so that was my quick run through. At your point you need to go to YouTube and Google how to root the sgs3 and hopefully they should have one for your specific carrier. The process should be the same minus the files you flash. Essentially you should be looking for stock ROM (for your specific device) with superuser or supersu already installed. Then you should be finding a way to install clockworkmod once you have root. (You may be able to find a file or tutorial that does this in one go). I cannot emphasise enough about reading. You wouldn't be here had you read first and in the flashing business, if you don't want a sgs3 paper weight you should read first.
Oh and ROMmanager from the marketplace installs clockworkmod for you (ONCE YOU HAVE ROOT) its simple. Just download it from the play story. Click flash recovery. It will load a bit and your done. Then you can reboot into it. ROM manager (the paid version is unnecessary) it just adds extra features you don't yet need. Look at it once you have flashed your first few ROMs.

Navigate by using the volume buttons to Install Zip > Choose Zip from Internal SD card > Navigate to the downloads folder> Select
Be Patient! and wait until your device is finished
Once the process is finished, you can select Reboot
Once your device has rebooted, launch the Google Play Store app
Search “SuperuserSU” and select the first app that shows in the search results
Install this app
Once it has finished installing, your done!
The only problem is I cant navigate to the option "install zip from internal sd card" I simply dont have though's options here is what I have when hold volume up reset and home
"reboot system now
apply update from ADB
apply update from external storage (which i dont have)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
apply update from cache
When i hit apply update from ADB it says "now send the package you want to apply to the device with "adb sideload <filename>"...
Im wondering if the original flash didnt go thru? Why dont I have the options that I should?
Any help would mean the world trying to get this puppy up asap!

Hi eddy,
It sounds like you didn't get CWM to stick after your flash with ODIN. You need to uncheck the reboot option in odin and then after the flash is done pull the battery and go directly into CWM loader by booting with the volume up + power + home button method. This will give you cwm rather than the stock loader you seem to be trying to use. You're almost there!

I think he can't install the superuser.zip from cwm after boot because he's allowing the stock rom to overwrite his cwm flash ... he's gotta pull his battery after the odin flash to get root in. That's what worked for me. once he's got root he can use rom manager to upgrade to cwm 6.x

He shouldn't need cwm to install. If flashes a firmware with root already injected he can then just use rom manager to install clockworkmod for the first time since rom manager just needs root which he will have. You can root and keep the stock recovery on at the same time
I think his biggest issue is root not sticking. Til he does that cwm wont install

I recently bought HTC ONE X. JB VERSION 4.2.2. I wanted to root my phone but the task was not completed so i got stuck on the HTC ONE X LOGO. i am now on HBOOT 1.72 IMAGE VERSION 4.18.401.2. Help please direct me to a correct RUU for the new HBOOT 1.72 on my phone I have tried many bunch of stuff and they did not work. Please if there is any other alternative i really need your help i don't know much about developer but i got some stuff on my laptop. like SDK ADB fastboot and some ROM's i downloaded. First, there's no RUU for any 4.2.x Rom, and since you updated your hboot, you won't be able to use any of the available RUUs.
Your options are as follows:
1. Restore a nandroid backup, or, if you haven't one, download one from this One X forum.
2. Install ClockworkMod recovery, connect your phone to a computer and mount it as a USB drive, copy over your last Rom to your phone, then flash it and profit.
Note: After flashing the rom, CWM will prompt you to install ROOT, say yes and you're*rooted.

1 How do i Restore a nandroid backup, and please send me the link to download from.
2 I can Install ClockworkMod recovery, but i don't know how to mount it as a USB drive? i will love to re-download all necessary tools to get my phone working again, i have many download but i don't want to make any more mistake the only download i trust now is my SDK and HTC USB driver.

Ok, lets go with option 2:

1. Start with creating a fresh new folder on your favorite computer's c:\ drive (yes, you can name it "fresh").
2. Download the following files and put them all in your c:\fresh folder
A. Download Clockwork recovery from:
http://download.clockworkmod.com/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.4.0-endeavoru.img and rename it
to CWM.img
B. Since your firmware (boot & hboot images) are only compatible with the latest 4.18.x ROM, you should download
this STOCK 4.18.401 ROM:
http://www.androidrevolution.nl/downloader/download.php?file=One_X_4.18.401.2_odexed.zip
C. You really want ROOT access, so download this:
http://xda7.androidrevolution.nl/db...ns/Android_Revolution_HD_Root_and_BusyBox.zip

A. Turn your phone OFF by holding Power button for 10 seconds, as soon as its off, hold down the "Volume Down"

[Q] Wifi Model, Stuck on Google Boot Up Screen, No OS Installed says TWRP, help?

Hey all,
So, my smart self was attempting to flash Marshmallow 6.0 from 4.3 (rooted)...I did the same thing that was here on this THREAD and now my tab can only go into TWRP, but there's no OS installed because I wiped (and didn't make a darn backup....), but there are a few differences from the thread I referred to:
- I can get into my Bootloader
- I can get into TWRP
- I have the current TWRP 2.8.7
- I've tried the Nexus Toolkit from HERE, my device serial is recognized, but it states that I'm offline
- Because I'm offline, I can't push any files to my device through the tool
- When I'm in TWRP, my computer will recognize my tablet and I can actually get into folders and what not, but I can't copy/paste any files to flash within TWRP and I get an error
- Anytime I power down or reboot within TWRP, it tells me that I have No OS installed
- I can't use ADB (as far as I know) because my device shows that it's offline
Is there any hope that I can recover even back to 4.3?
Any guidance would really be appreciated. I have to step away because I'm frustrated and am angry at myself that I didn't make a nandroid.

Are you using stock rom? Because if you are, I wouldn't even try. What with the widespread knowledge that stock might brick, some people insist on it. Otherwise, if you can get to the bootloader:
(1) Make sure it's unlocked (if you're not familiar, connect tab to PC, make sure fastboot works, then enter "fastboot oem unlocked" without the quotes then follow instructions on your tab);
(2) Flash bootloader 4.05 if you haven't already;
(3) Get a USB OTG thumb drive (you might need an OTG adapter for this); and download a Marshmallow-based custom rom in the Android Development section;
(4) Get into TWRP and mount USB OTG. You should see all the files on your thumb drive;
(5) Copy all data you care about to your PC;
(6) Wipe everything except USB OTG twice. Then go to Format and do it twice too. If yours is 32GB, it will take a while (30 Mins average depending on how much data);
(7) Flash rom, then Gapps.
You should be able to boot after that. Good luck.

- Before I wiped my OS, I was running the Smooth ROM. Does this make a difference? - Regarding fastboot, how do I get into it? I can't use adb because it lists my tablet as Offline when I type in "adb devices"...
- My lock icon is unlocked at the Google screen, but it stops there since I currently have no OS
- Would I be able to skip to your Step 4 just use the USB OTG and mount the original 4.3 OS through TWRP?
- Should I just flash the OEM 4.3? Or should I load the Smooth ROM or whatever other ROM instead of the OEM 4.3?

It shouldn't make a difference what rom you flash now so long as you wipe and format everything inside TWRP. But you must make sure you have bootloader 4.05. 4.02 will not allow you to flash LL or MM successfully, and the system does not upgrade on its own no matter what rom you're flashing now.
Since you said you couldn't get TWRP to copy anything, I suggested that you use a thumb drive. Basically, if you turn the tab totally off, hold power + volume down for a few seconds, it should take you to the fastboot page (pic). Look to see what bootloader version you have there.
From here, you can basically flash anything. I recommended that you wipe and format first with TWRP because it happened to me a few times when for some reason, wiping alone still left some residual data that interfered with flashing newer roms.
Stay away from anything stock for the moment. God knows it has bricked more than a few devices. Download SkipsoftToolKit and flash from the fastboot page if you want an automated process. It has worked wonderfully in my experience. Ask if you have more questions. Have fun.

Stay away from anything stock for the moment. God knows it has bricked more than a few devices. Download SkipsoftToolKit and flash from the fastboot page if you want an automated process. It has worked wonderfully in my experience. Ask if you have more questions. Have fun.

This is really helpful...I think I'm almost there.
I'm on a super old Bootloader (see attachment) so I'll need to update. I downloaded the update from this XDA Thread
More questions:
- Would I be able to push the 4.05 bootloader update and custom whatever Marshmallow ROM via the toolkit instead of from a USB OTG?
- If I was rooted on 4.3, am I still rooted so that I would be able to flash the custom ROM? I don't want to risk doing further damage, lol.
- I'm not home at the moment, so I can't test this out -- I'm thinking I couldn't put anything into my tablet last night because it was running TWRP and I didn't have it on the Fastboot screen. Would being in the Fastboot screen possibly allow me to copy/paste the zip files into my tablet?
- If there's nothing I need to copy from the tablet, would I still need the USB OTG? Or could I just use the Toolkit to push everything into my tablet and flash via TWRP?
Based on your answers to the above would this be the correct order:
1. Push 4.05 bootloader update and custom ROM via toolkit to my tablet
2. Flash 4.05 bootloader update within TWRP
3. *Per your earlier advice* Wipe everything except USB OTG twice. Is this cache, dalvik, system, and data? Or literally there's an option for "wipe everything" (I don't remember what I saw)?
4. Then go to Format and do it twice, too. I have a 32GB, so I'm expecting it to take awhile for the format
5. Flash ROM, then Gapps. I don't have any apps I need to put back so much as I need an OS to load, so I can add later.

Okay, so I came home and was able to use the Toolkit to recognize the device in fastboot mode. However, I wasn't able to push anything into the phone because the Toolkit said that I needed to be booted into Android.
The last thing I saw when I was in TWRP poking around was that I saw that I could install .zip files from USB OTG. Are either of these alright for me to connect my flash drive to and be recognized inside TWRP?

If you're comfortable using the ToolKit, you don't need an OTG cable. Connect your tab to PC, fire up ToolKit, complete all the prelim BS, then flash the bootloader from TK. Do not use TWRP for this. To do this, open the ToolKit folder in drive C:, locate the folder therein for zips, place the zip files (4.05 bootloader; TWRP; or custom roms) in there, and start to install. I am talking off the top of my head. But give me a few minutes to check the Kit again, and I'll give specific instructions. Bear with me, as I'm on Linux at the moment and therefore cannot start ToolKit (which is in Windows).

Things to do in order:
1. Download bootloader 4.05 (flashable zip HERE); and custom rom of your choice (zip format)
2. Locate the Unified Android ToolKit on drive C: on your PC and open it;
3. Locate the folder “put zip file to sideload here” → “Nexus 7 2013” then paste
bootloader zip and Rom zip in there;
4. Fire up Toolkit with tab connected; complete all the prelim questions;
5. Follow all the steps to install TWR 2870 (pic 8, choice 6);
6. Go to TWRP, wipe and format.
7. Go back to TWRP main page → “Advanced” → “ADB sideload”;
8 Go to ToolKit (pic 8) enter choice 16 (Look at the pics that follow for the correct choices) to
sideload Bootloader;
9. Flash Bootloader.
10. Go back to TWRP main page → Reboot → Bootloader. Once there check bootloader version 4.05;
11. Get into TWRP to sideload Rom; flash it.

I had already flashed TWRP 2870 before I wiped the OS, but I figured I'd try again using the Toolkit, but I got an error. I stopped here just in case.
Earlier, I tried flashing the zip for the bootloader the same way you just instructed, but my serial number turned into question marks?
Please see attachments. My pics are on the right side of the comparisons and I blacked out some of my serial number just in case for the TWRP pic.

Ok. One step at a time. Since you don't have an OS installed, ToolKit cannot complete the process of sideloading because it normally would have to use ADB from within the OS (which is absent) to restart the tab into recovery mode (TWRP). But if you're already in sideload mode within TWRP, it would detect it and transfer the file over to your tab. Let's go back.
(1) Fire up ToolKit (TK), go to sideload step, type the file name and stop. Get to fastboot page on your tab. Go back to TK and hit enter. TK should detect fastboot mode, download TWRP 2.7.1.1, take the tab into TWRP, tell you to go to sideload mode. Thereafter, it should detect this mode and transfer the file over. Then TWRP would flash the bootloader 4.05 automatically. If successful, sideload the rom the same way to flash it. Then upgrade TWRP back to 2870 with TK.
(2) Failing the above (because TWRP somehow doesn't function correctly), put the tab in fastboot mode, go to TK and follow the steps to flash TWRP anew. TK should detect fastboot and begin to flash the recovery. That done, go back and restart (1) above.
(3) If that still doesn't work, we have to resort to fastboot.exe and do it by command lines. But that's far ahead. Try the above first. We'll cross that bridge if we get to it.
I can send you an automated package that would upgrade the bootloader to 4.04 that I downloaded a year ago from Scott's Roms (thanks to him). It's good enough for Lollipop 5.1. The file is about 4MB and I'm not sure how we can do this through XDA. But if we ever get there, I'm certain we'll find a way. And smile, it's only a lousy tab.

Let me just say, I'm so thankful for your help in all of this. Seriously. Thank you.
I kept on tinkering with the ToolKit and Fastboot kept on stopping everytime I switched to TWRP. I got to the point where TWRP showed 2.7.1 but the ADB Sideload kept getting stuck at the "Starting Sideload" prompt.
I went out and bought a $3 OTB USG cable and figured I'd give it a go since this sounded easier (theoretically). At first, I couldn't understand why the OTG wasn't recognized within TWRP. Then, I realized I needed to mount it within TWRP.
Once it mounted, I wiped and flashed the 4.05 bootloader zip. Success.
I went back into the Fastboot screen to verify 4.05. Success.
Went back into TWRP 2.8.7 and flashed a 6.0 ROM from these boards. Success.
Flashed Gapps. Success.
Rebooted. I'm now running a custom Marshmallow ROM and it runs so smoothly now.

I'm glad you got it working again. Sorry you had to make a trip to the store. You should've waited for KT to switch the tab to TWRP 2711 for you. But it was not a waste of time anyway.
