[Q] LTE data plan interchangeable with iphone - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hey guys, recently i bought an ATT S3 from ebay. I've heard that if i had an Iphone 4s with unlimited data plan, i could switch it over to LTE plan with a certain cap, but i would still get throttled unlimited data after. Is this true? and how would i go about doing so?

I just bought a Galaxy S3 two weeks ago myself and I upgraded from an iPhone 3GS. I had an AT&T unlimited data plan just like you and I was able to keep the unlimited data plan on LTE. Unlimited means unlimited but what AT&T does is throttle your speed down only after you exceed 5GB per month for LTE (for the rest of that month only). The next month your LTE speed goes back up for the first 5 GB ...and so on.
Now if you decide to give up your unlimited data plan and go with a tiered data plan then AT&T will not throttle your speed because you're paying for it.

So if i was wanting to get this kinda of data plan how would i ask for it?

Just explain the situation and ask for it. Had an iPhone with unlimited and want to switch to LTE unlimited. Pretty painless.

All I did is walk into the AT&T store and told them I had an unlimited data plan on the old phone that I wanted to keep on the new phone. They said okay. Didn't matter if the new phone is on LTE.
Note: Make sure you tell them to also include the texting plan (which is data but separate). I had an old 200 texts/month for $5 and they forgot to add that onto the new plan. Turned out to give me grief and hassle when I found out I couldn't text on my new phone when setting it up at home. Returned to the AT&T store to try to add texting plan back but they couldn't. They said it was an old text plan that was no longer available. Had to contact AT&T customer retention center to get that old texting plan added at the same price.

3g on g2

I just bought a tmobile g2 off ebay but it won't. Let me use my 3g it says I have to upgrade my plan is there a way around this so I can use my orignal 3g or do I have to upgrade now. Thanks

You have to upgrade. Generally speaking, TMobile gives the first 12 hours of Android usage for free to "new" Android users to suck them in.
They do IMEI validation on their end periodically to make sure the phone you are using lines up with the plan you are on. Sucks, I know.
that's kinda weird. Before I bought the phone I talked with a Tmo rep and he said that if you already have a 3g plan but your device is 4g capable then it will just use 4g. I asked if it required a new sim though. He said no but gave me a new one because mine was a little beaten in from wear and tear. I suggest going in to a tmo store and asking if they can trouble shoot you if you're already paying for the standard "unlimited" data.
Ya already unlimited data and its cheaper then the 4g unlimited data so I don't want switch. I can't even 2g which sucks. Ill go talk to tmobile I hope I don't have to switch
I guess it really depends on which data plan you were on. I was "assuming" you were on something like the $10 Web2Go or another cheaper smartphone data plan - which are both technically "3G".
If you were already on an Android plan and then you shouldn't have to switch.
i talk to the rep i got him to keep my data plan the same price and switched over to android data plan i had an hd2 running android so i had to switch it. He said it takes 2 hours to kick in so im still waiting
well its been about five hours and all does is go to web2go and tell me i need to upgrade so im guessing im screwed and now its time fork up more money for 4g

Why did you HAVE to switch it? I had an hd2 on android with the unlimited data and didn't have to switch my data plan when I got my g2.....

It depends on which data plan you were on with the HD2.
I was on the HD2 with $10 Web2Go (which worked) and had to switch.
You can do what I did and buy a AT&T android phone and unlock it and use your T-mobile Sim and still get data but you might not get their full 3G (something about being on different frequencies) but you will still get there data.
I did that but umm vice versa lol.
Since T-Mobile does not keep track of AT&T's IMEI's they can't charge you for having a droid because they don't know. At least that's what i did with AT&T

GSM Galaxy Nexus on AT & T medianet

Anyone able to use the $10 unlimited medianet plan or are you forced into the smart phone 2 gb plan?
My nexus arrives tomorrow and I'm on the medianet plan on my gs2 and was hoping to keep it
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Yep, you'll be able to keep your $10 unlimited with your Galaxy Nexus on AT&T. That's what I'm doing and have been doing since my Galaxy S2 International version. Still get HSPA speeds too, roughly ~4 mbs download and ~1 mbs uploads. Enjoy it!
You may or may not get to keep the $10 medianet unlimited. If you did, then consider yourself lucky.
Back when I had my Nexus One they switched me to the $30 smartphone unlimited a few days after changing from a dumbphone.
So far I've been able to keep my media net plan. We'll see what happens over the next few days
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
Thanks for the info guys. I've been considering making the move but would only do so if I can keep my $10 MediaNet unlimited plan.
If you guys wouldn't mind to keep us updated in the next few weeks it would be really helpful.
Happy Holidays!
Any luck keeping the $10 unlimited media net? I am hearing conflicted reports, and seems like a lot of misinformation out there. Some folks saying their friend's friend got switched, others saying its still good.
If they do catch you and switch to a smartphone data plan, is there a way to get AT&T to let you retain unlimited but at the $30 rate instead, or do they force you to the $25 2GB plan?
Fingers crossed, but I'm on day 4 of using the medianet plan. I'm using the Cingular 410 apn, and getting roughly 7mbps download speeds when in good coverage areas.
Any updates? I don't want to drop my unlimited smartphone plan for this only to find out they'll switch me to the 2GB plan

If you were grandfathered in to the unlimited smartphone plan you will be able to keep it, the reason why they won't is because they will lose money

nono, once you get rid of the grandfathered plan (for example, switching to medianet), you can't get it back - unless you do the iPhone 2G trick
I'm still on the $10 plan. They haven't sent a text message/email yet. My billing cycle ends on the 22nd, so we'll see if there are any changes then.
As far a I understand it, since I am technically using a data plan that is not compatible with my phone, they CAN and WILL switch me to a 2Gb plan for my smartphone, and take away my unlimited. They can do this because they don't technically offer the unlimited data for smartphones plan anymore (only for grandfathered accounts), so they can't bump me to that one. Since I would be switching from non-smartphone to smartphone, I wouldn't be considered grandfathered.
I'm sure I could call and complain and get them to do it anyway, but I understand their reasoning. It just sucks.

My billing cycle ended on the 22nd, and I am still on the $10 media net plan. Still using the Cingular APN.
Good luck.
Hopefully you can continue using $10 data plan.
I wouldn't risk it of you use a lot of data and are currently on the $30 unlimited data.
I heard some Samsung galaxy note people losing their unlimited $30 cause AT&T system thought they were using a tablet device instea of a phone.
So far no issues on the media net plan. I haven't went over 2 gb though yet
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
I have been using that plan since i had a HTC tytan 2 - nexus 1 and now the Galaxy nexus... no problems... high speeds...
I had the $10 medianet plan and got switched to the $30 unlimited plan too about a month (one billing period) after putting the sim into my Nexus One.
Either way I think you'll be able to keep the unlimited once your grandfathered in no matter what. Price might go up though :/
Good luck!

wap.cingular I believe
I tried out both the wap.cingular APN and the PTA APN and it seems like the PTA APN consistently had lower ping and higher speed than wap.cingular.
Not sure if I want to give up my unlimited LTE data plan right now (I'd lose access to pta)

Can I add a family member to my Verizon Unlimited Data plan & get them unlimited too?

Can I add a family member to my Verizon Unlimited Data plan & get them unlimited too?
My cousin loves my Verizon Galaxy Nexus and she wants to get one too, but Verizon doesn't have unlimited data anymore.
Has anyone tried adding someone to their family plan to get unlimited data?
She currently has the iphone 4s from AT&T and it's slow as hell and the screen is tiny!
Not possible. Adding someone now means they have to be added under the Share Everything plans. They're not giving unlimited to any new lines or after upgrades.

no. you have the choice, you can do either the share everything OR give them a tiered plan and everything else on the plan stays the same.
unlimited is not possible either way however.

You're right. I mentally group the Share Everything and standard tiered plans together, so my wording was incorrect.
Can't be done my wife was added at 2gb a month. Same price as my unlimited plan.

I bet unlimited will come back in a year. T-mobile's 4G just beat my phone in subarban chicago and they are going unlimited/unthrotled. Time to show Verizon what we think of them. Me? I'm under contract until 2014 thanks to the GS3 and unlimited for 3 phones.

Verizon and AT&T are not feeling threatened by T-Mobile and Sprint unlimited data. Postpaid subscribers are at an all time high and churn is at an all time low for both companies. As much as you think it's going to affect the market, it's going to take a lot more than T-Mobile offering unlimited data for Verizon and AT&T to start seeing customers leave.

Unless carriers like Sprint and TMo somehow manage to expand their network immensely then VZW and AT&T will not feel threatened. At that point Sprint and TMo would eventually moved to tiered plans as well since more people would move over eventually.
I'll leave Verizon after my contract if I can't get a nexus on Verizon in 2014. In a perfect world I could buy an unlocked nexus from Google and use it on vzw. Maybe in 2014 they'll offer this.

I like your optimism, but don't hold your breath. Verizon and at&t have no incentive to offer unlimited plans. More people are getting smartphones, which means more network traffic, which means investing more money into infrastructure and less profit.
we were talking today about this at work. I am on a plan with my brother who has Unlimited data with Verizon and I have a 2GB plan till DEC 2014. My co worker says he still has unlimited data and he recently added his wife to his plan. She did not upgrade a phone and just got on his plan. He said they added her, she got a new number and was using a phone that wasn't brand new now. I am wondering when my plan comes up in DEC if I can do the same with my brother and he can add a line and give me unlimited data. Any thoughts out there??

T mobile impressions

I just switched from att to tmo because i was able to get the phone cheaper on value plan (250 down and 20 a month) and mainly because they are the only ones who have good unlimited data, sprint sucks, who knows when lte will eventually be available for sprint...
The plans are really cheap! im on the value plan because i bought the phone outright, but i moved my mom and dad over from att family plan too.
before we were paying about 340 for all 3 unlimited everything, now it comes to 177, and we were able to get 8 percent off every bill because of my fathers company which happens to be on their list. And, we can add my sister for free for 500 minutes and unlimited night, weekends, and mobile to mobile and text.
The question was service, but i didnt care and my parents said that to save like 150 a month, they dont care either. i live in brooklyn, ny. service seems to be pretty good. The data is amazing! Honestly, you dont need more than 5-10 mbps and i get solid 10-15 or sometimes 8. thats amazing! who needs effing LTE! and according to tmo store employees theyll have lte next year.
From what i hear, customer service sucks... i havent had that yet....
My mother does sales, so she drives all over the tri-state area not just in heavily populated areas so it remains to be seen how happy she will be with it... but still Its so freaking cheap it doesnt matter
anyone else's thoughts
We have been with T-Mobile going on 8 years now. Currently have 5 phones on the Classic Unlimited Family plan. The coverage is great, with few dropped calls. Customer service is good, but their Automated Directory is a pain in the [email protected]#$. 1 suggestion to get to a live agent is to say "Loyalty" when asked what you want to do. My biggest grip with them, and I'm sure this goes for the majority of carriers is their Tech Support is worthless.
I switched after 5 years with Sprint. Since they keep dropping support for the device I purchased it was time for a change. Plus with all the same features on the plan I had, I'll pay 147 at Tmo vs 194 at sprint.
And Hspa+ 42 is soooooooo much faster the the wimax I had on my Photon
noted for future reference on my Note 2
I had switched to Sprint for the EVO 3D and the plan at the time seemed like a good deal.. biggest mistake ever leaving T-Mobile.. 3 months of painful service from Sprint... they canceled both contracts, kept the phone, sold em and moved the wife and I back to T-Mobile. Not planning on leaving for the foreseeable future.
The gf had an AT&T iphone and after 2 years and no longer in contract..., she wanted to cancel her $30 dollar dataplan and continue to just use the phone. They said No to her and that she must keep the dataplan. She said she would go to T-mobile. They didn't care and dare her.
So now she's on T-mobile with her iphone, no data plan required. T-mobile is very flexible.
Also Sim based phone > CDMA phone all day. Not only is the resale value higher, you can actually use it outside of the US.
I've been a TMO customer for 10 years. I would disagree with the poster that said their Customer Service is a negative. I haven't called recently other than lighting up the SIM that came with the Note 2 from Wirefly (I wasn't cutting my GS2 SIM) and that went similarly to every other call I have ever had with them. Outstanding every time. The only issue I have ever had with Tmobile is coverage. It sucks at my house so WiFi calling is mandatory IF I care about talking on the phone, I don't. This part of the country is Verizon for excellent coverage. Tmobile struggles in rural areas but again, I don't really care about that. It's rare I find myself in those areas. Customer support, in my experience, has always been a very positive experience.
You can't cancel your data plan on AT&T while on contract, you can pay a min of $25 a month for the data plan. I moved from ATT to Tmobile because of unlimited data. My contract is up with ATT in Jan. Was paying $50 for 5G, $30 unlimited text and on a $69. 99 family plan of 700 min. a month. Screw them... Moved to Tmobile for a valu plan of $79.99 + tax... UNLIMITED EVERYTHING. I don't miss ATT' lte cuz there ain't none in my area and seriously Tmobile runs faster.

Love Tmobile. I'm on their prepaid Monthly4G $30/mo plan. Can't beat it. Sure i only get 5GB of 4G data, but with WiFi all day at work and at home, I don't really need the unlimited data.
I've been reading a lot about some of the carriers LTE and how TMO is faster. What I have heard is TMO is going LTE sometime next year, I'm hoping this doesn't effect our current speed?

at&t is so stupid........you can't even cancel your data plan even if you're not on contract. Smartphone = data plan REGARDLESS.
That's why I have T-Mobile even though I work for at&t.
I have 5 smartphones on my plan but only have data plans on 2 of them. My kids only use data wherever there is wifi. Why can't at&t understand that I don't know but T-Mobile does.

This is true. They won't let you cancel your data plan even if you're off contract. If you're using any smart phone, they required you get a data plan. lol. Plus i think they have a 2GB data cap on their LTE and if you go over, they charge for it.
OP, I was in a smilar boat as you. Transferred the fam over to value and have 4 great lines for less than $140. I thought service would suck compqred to AT&T, but quite the opposite. The only carrier coverage and speed envy I have is for VZW, but with their dumb CDMA, locked bootloaders, and double high prices they can keep it lol.
Very happy Tmo customer for the last 14 months.

[Q] ATT Unlimited Plans and Note 4

Anyone know if AT&T is allowing upgrades to Note 4 and allowing subscribers to keep their unlimited plans?
4Nails
Yes they are. When I preordered, I was able to continue my unlimited plan. The only thing they did not carry over was the A List which they've apparently killed for everyone.
Unlimited plans are still hanging in there, outright, contract or next. And FYI, if worse comes to worst there's a clause in at&t terms of service that allows you to get out of your contact if they decide to kill them completely
Yup, still was able to keep my unlimited with next...
Sent from my Note3 Rocking DynamicKat or my G3
Yes. I was able to keep mine when I preordered. Coming from a S3. I've had unlimited data since my first smartphone, iPhone 3G.
I was able to keep my unlimited plan with my pre-order. I moved to Next and got rid of my A-List (since just about everyone I speak with is mobile-to-mobile). It still irks me that "Unlimited" get throttled at 5gb/month. At least thats what the salesman told me.
I gave mine up for the 30GB plan. I got so sick of my data basically cutting off after 5GB. Only really needed about 15Gb each month, now I have 30GB.
AT&T is upping all the plans, but the unlimited threshold still is at 5GB.
